21:20 ... When you spray right over the door hardware, and wipe it off just a few minutes later, is it coming off so easily because ANY brand of oil stain is non-porous and won't stick to metal? For just a homeowner...pump sprayer. How much coverage can I get per gallon? Also, 1 year old cedar fence. Southern Louisiana. Transparent or semitransparent?
Transparent Stain & Sealer is recommended for a re-coat every 1 to 2 years. Semi-Transparent Stain & Sealer is recommended for a re-coat every 2 to 2.5 years. Semi-Solid Stain & Sealer is recommended for a re-coat every 3 to 3.5 years. When determining stain coverage for decks you will need one gallon of stain per 200 square feet. For basic privacy fences with side by side pickets, you can expect to use a gallon of stain per 12 linear feet (both sides). For other styles of fences (shadowbox, 4-rail, 3-rail, board on board, etc.) coverage rates will differ. We recommend picking the color you like best. Hope this helps answer your question.
@@Fencearmor Sorry if this sounds like I'm being difficult, but isn't the point of this very video the fact you can spray it and it covers easily and wipes off?
Hi Ronel, thank you for your question. We always recommend masking off the area, but if anything gets underneath it, it is easily removed. You can also spray it with water beforehand and that will allow it to be removed as well. Vinyl has a lot of crevasses so it is best to mask it.

Hi Alan, great questions. An airless paint sprayer is what he is using. It works with a high volume of paint and uses an electric motor instead of an air compressor for atomization, creating a high-pressure spray pattern that allows you to paint effortlessly and consistently.
@@Fencearmor Thanks for the response. I get that he's using an airless sprayer. My question was setting the pressure on the high pressure airless sprayer. It can go up to 3,000 psi or more. Do we just go as high as possible?
@@trunksy Hi Alan, as regards to pressure setting, what you are looking for is good flow, the pressure adjustment helps manage hose length compensation.
good video but as a construction professional I have some doubts 1. I have two of those pumps ( Graco 390/395). This pump isnt strong enough to properly atomize Oil Use the Graco Mark V to make sure that product is atomized correctly Also, not cleaning the sprayer will lead to repacking required a lot Spray technique and cleanliness is very important for a uniform finish This guy isn't as GC I'd wager, so He might have this somewhat down to a science but for me construction is an art form and my boy here killed it but forgot some very important points also youre using the wrong Tip Lol that over spray is ridiculous , also thats putting er on too thick big time, thin coat, go back and mist
I’m only going to give one piece of free advice away other than do not follow this technique The sprayer head should always maintain the same distance between the sprayer and the product being sprayed. They’re putting to much on in the middle and not enough at the top and bottom...
Hi Eidy, great question! It is the Stain & Seal Experts Auburn Stain, you can find it here: fencearmor.com/collections/stain-seal-experts-fence-stain/products/stain-seal-experts-fence-stain-semi-solid.
You are using a 521 tip for spraying stain? I get the idea of getting a job done quickly, but why would you be so wasteful? I would even understand pushing a 515 if that is the idea (when the recommended tip range here is 311 to 413!). You stated 10 ln. ft. / gal...so 60 sq. ft. / gal here? This seems absurd. I am used to roughly 125 - 150 sq. ft. / gal. This would make a job extremely expensive on the product side. At $30 / gal (just throwing out a "box store number") a huge amount of your profit margin is simply wasted (at 3x the product that should be used). Hell, even at $20-$23 a gallon for that matter. I am so confused as to why this video was made / released by a professional company. No disrespect intended...I'm just taken back.
Thank you for your comment Mr. James. We spoke with the contractor directly and he shared that this stain product has no thinners so the 521 tip is required because it is a much thicker product. Contractors agree on this universally who use this type of stain. We recommend 125 sqft per gallon and the math for staining both sides of a 6’ fence is 100 linear ft x 12’ / 125 sqft per gallon = 9.6 gallons of stain which is about 10’ of fence (both sides) per gallon of stain used. We’re not so different after all.
For oil-based transparent, 521 is a soso tip for what you’re trying to accomplish. You need to vary your technique depending on how the wood is reacting. The goal is to saturate the wood to the point of rejecting the stain, without wasting product. This is even more important to pay attention to as you go up to semi-transparent and solids, tip size can be varied here as well. I use a double-tip extension with 621s for penetrating stain, and I get a wider fan that’s a more controllable spray with about half the pressure you see in this silly video - for reference, this setup can easily finish 300ft in about 30mins or less.
If the lumber is rough-hewn, you can apply our EXPERT Stain right away without any issues. However, if the lumber is smooth, most people wait to allow the mill finish to weather and roughen up slightly. To speed up the process, you can use a wood brightener or cleaner to open the grain and help the wood absorb more stain.

This guy is going to get some extremely bad news from his doctor one day, guaranteed, because of thinking atomized paint is okay to breathe.
omg dude! This is awful... the angles you are spraying at. WHY are you "training" ppl to do this so wrong? Take off that ridiculous extension and hold the sprayer horizontal! The entire time. This means you will have to do some bending and moving your arms. I can't imagine how thick the product will be in the middle as opposed to the top and bottom.

@@trunksy Hi Alan, as regards to pressure setting, what you are looking for is good flow, the pressure adjustment helps manage hose length compensation.
good video but as a construction professional I have some doubts
1. I have two of those pumps ( Graco 390/395). This pump isnt strong enough to properly atomize Oil
Use the Graco Mark V to make sure that product is atomized correctly
Also, not cleaning the sprayer will lead to repacking required a lot
Spray technique and cleanliness is very important for a uniform finish
This guy isn't as GC I'd wager, so He might have this somewhat down to a science but for me construction is an art form and my boy here killed it but forgot some very important points
also youre using the wrong Tip Lol that over spray is ridiculous , also thats putting er on too thick big time, thin coat, go back and mist
i agree. Id say a 315 max and turn the pressure down a bit. but it does look like a good product
I guess you had it on mute?
What sprayer is that?
It is a Graco 390 Pc Stand Airless Paint Sprayer. You are more than welcome to contact Caleb at Stain & Seal Experts (+1 615-785-1861) on the details.
Omg they are power washing that fence with some stain🤣🤣🤣
Always protected with plastic and or tape what you don’t want to hit and your best choice will be a water based emulsified with oil mix, like Sansin

very nice, what should be the minimum or ideal humidity to proceed with spraying
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you so much for the great question. The dryer the better but less than 20% would be best. Hope that answers your question.
What do you clean your sprayer with
With oil based stain, cleaning isn't necessary as it doesn't dry. But if you are interested in cleaning, Mineral Spirits does work.
How long before it's rain ready?
Great question! It is rain ready right away!
24 hours per manufacturing recommendation on there website
Audio is just terrible .
Thank you for the note. We will work on that for future videos.
The audio is fine clean your damn ears out
I’m only going to give one piece of free advice away other than do not follow this technique
The sprayer head should always maintain the same distance between the sprayer and the product being sprayed.
They’re putting to much on in the middle and not enough at the top and bottom...
Totally agree
Thank you Matthew, it is a training course so it is a first time staining for many. We appreciate the advice.
Thanks for letting everyone know how smart you are
what about spraying the hardware, is that typical? I thought he'd tape it or protect it some type of way.
Did any of you listen to anything that was said in the video?
What brand airless sprayer and pump are u using and brand sealer ?

I didn't see you prime with water like other people do. I own the x5. Can i skip the prime process if I only want to stain?
@@DJMARTIN73 They always prime with the product they are using.
Hi. Which color is that? I don't see a very dark brown on their website.
Hello, thank you so much for asking. He used Walnut, you can find it on the website here: bit.ly/2m96jWM. Let us know if you have any questions!
What’s the name of that Stain
Hi Eidy, great question! It is the Stain & Seal Experts Auburn Stain, you can find it here: fencearmor.com/collections/stain-seal-experts-fence-stain/products/stain-seal-experts-fence-stain-semi-solid.
Maybe it was my equipment but I could hardly hear him
Thank you for letting us know, we will definitely make sure to have better audio next time!
It’s not true to let the wood age. Two weeks after you install it stain it.
Awesome.
Thank you so much!
Thank you for saving me 1k!
So glad we could help!
Training without a single thought of safety. That "atomized" oil based stain going right into eyes and lungs
Safety gear is always a good idea and recommended. Masking would depend on the job. But thank you for the reminder.
There are companies that do this year round?
Absolutely, all dependent on the area!
@@Fencearmor i want to buy this stain if you have a website to purchase it?

Straigh over the hardware

Good stuff--just shoot in 60fps not 24fps-- looks glitchy
Thank you for the tip!
Maybe getting a smaller tip🤣 what a video. Every body got a chance to power wash that fence. Just hearing that pump how much stain is pumping
You used the airless wrong... Thats why it took long to start up in beggining
Thank you for the comment, Chris. We appreciate the feedback.
The wrist over ever seen. No shields nothing! He has that thing turned up, like a power washer!?! 😂😂😂

Is that a semi transparent stain?
Yes it is!
A non-drying oil. O.k. that's a new one to me.
The PSI is turned up way too high on this which is going to burn through way more Stain the necessary. Costing you or your customer money
Thank you for the feedback, we will pass this along!
👉 oil based is way more forgiving application wise … it doesn’t matter because it’ll all look the same when finished
Thank you for your input.
Baja la precion 3/4 y usa un tip mas chico
Deme trabajo soy pintor bibo en texas
Little OCD going on with that rag.. your pressure is way too high, tip is way too small.
Why mask off the retaining wall if you said it just washes off?
It depends what the retaining wall is made from, if it was steel it wouldn't be an issue but brick is more porous. Hope that answers the question.
At 24 minutes in when he opens the gate you can see massive overspray on the concrete block wall that’s a good distance behind the fence. Incredibly sloppy work. This guy is going to get some extremely bad news from his doctor one day, guaranteed, because of thinking atomized paint is okay to breathe.
MASK UP, ELF AND SAFETY 1ST
Real thick in the middle lol
Did they hire the expert outside home depot, or what? Staining is not so hard. Sealers and removing the old ones can be a lot of work.
