Admittedly, I’m kinda a Renovision fan boy. Dudes videos have literally saved me thousands of dollars by showing me how to do stuff and giving me the courage to DIY. That said I’m bummed about the copy right claim but glad they didn’t pursue it. If I had to guess, it was probably a knee jerk reaction then they realized it wasn’t a big deal. His whole family is involved in making their RUclips videos and I imagine it’s their main source of income. I’d feel a little protective too. Either way, you handled it well, Joe.
I think the issue was that you used a very large portion of his video with relatively few comments in between. At first glance this really seems like a steal. Maybe you could have cut the renovision video some more.
He seems like a pretty cool guy, he's just a tad sensitive to comments though I find.. I mean your reaction was pretty mild and overall positive, not sure why they decided to make a takedown notice
Compare Jeff ti Mike Holmes and the HGTV crowd and he is hands down looking out for the DIY crowd sirg helpful tips. Knock him for the copyright thing but he is one of the best resources for DIY on you tube.

Jeff made a reference in one of his live videos to people who sit and make reaction videos. Kinda inferred it was a lazy way to create content. He was not a fan. Now i know what he was talking about. He is generally not receptive to criticism but I enjoy his DIY oriented perspective.
As a fan of both channels, I thought you did a fine job on this video. I consider Jeff more of a “jack of all trades” in construction. Where as, you are a specialist in fencing. I believe he had a knee jerk reaction. Keep the videos coming!!
You're 100% correct Joe. It's not as structurally sound at all on a vertical fence. In fact, I used to work for a decking manufacturer that used the Camo system and I can assure you that they wouldn't recommend their product for vertical applications. The forces involved are totally different, as you stated.
I just feel like "reaction videos" are a cheap way of making money off someone else's work/videos. I can somehow understand his frustration since someone sitting on chair making money out of his work and his video, he spent the time and money recording, editing, building and explaining his process you just hit the PLAY button. Also he sounds Canadian so it would be harder and more expensive for him to follow up with US Federal Court law suits. My suggestion is to show your viewers how YOU would do it and refer the viewers to that video to see how not to do it. But just sitting there talking about this individuals entire video/work seems lazy and cheap; but that's how I feel about all "reaction videos". I like that you were very respectful and knowledgeable, I would just suggest you show us how you would do it right and refer to his videos instead of showing us his entire video and just talk. Wish you and Renovision's the best.

@@tatsumaru12345 I know that reacting to music videos monetizes the artist and not the reacting party. Don’t know if it’s the case here. If you react on a music video or a song, you will get a “copyright claim”, RUclips gives the money to the original artist. Additionally, if the artist does not allow the content to be posted, you will receive a “copyright strike”, I think if you get 3 of them, your channel will be taken down.

I disagree with this mentality. Creating and editing a video can be very time intense. Reaction videos such as this can provide valuable information for someone trying this DIY. Information that may be glossed over by the original content creator. With that said, there ARE reaction videos that fall right in line with a lazy approach. Again, I just find fault in the mentality that ALL reaction videos are lazy.
I don't understand why they wanted you to take this video down. I like their video, it has many good tips that you pointed out and I like your comments that help recognize and avoid the mistakes they made. I think they should thank you for reviewing their video, it's good free advertisement. Thank you for your reviews.

We think it is better to stay as far as possible from any similar interest content creators on RUclips, even thou the Fence Expert has outstanding points on many DIY reaction videos with this DMCA event creator community has learned again the ups and downs of RUclipss policies which can be frustrating and confusing. We are glad we can see our favorite Expert back in business as well as Reno Vision for their interesting videos.
@@JoeEverest One thing I have learned about Jeff is that he is a business man first and content creator second. I don't think he is big into the community part of being a content creator in terms of channel to channel. In terms of channel to subscribers/members/clients, whatever, he is very much into community. It is his show, and when you watch it you can tell that he HAS a dream and a business plan around his channel. His videos are pretty good too, though.

Channels like Jeff's will set the standard in You Tube law suit cases.
@@serge.crispino418 I mean, perhaps you do feel that way. In a few videos he does acknowledge that you shouldn't do anything you aren't comfortable with. For me his videos are great for demystifying things like plumbing or tile work. To each their own, I suppose.
@@scrumpers9100 - there are many excellent you tube tutorials on how to DIY correctly - Jeff's channel should be used as a guide and gauge on how NOT TO DIY !! never work on tasks that require a licensed trades person to complete and always use the correct PPE - Jeff the goat like to advocate the opposite of common sense .
Of course he’s a business man. He’s not doing this as a hobby or out of his mom’s basement in his spare time. He runs the channel like a business because for him, and a lot of others, it is a business. I can almost assure you that the meter Joe received was a sort of standard CAD letter that anyone would get. It is probably on the advice of their attorneys to not engage in dialog with the other party. In my place of business, if someone falls, we fill out an incident report. We do not give copies of that report out. As an outsider, you might wonder, well why not? Why wouldn’t you help this poor soul and just give it to them??? We are not going to freely hand them a document that they can then go to a personal injury attorney to sue us with. We have been in business for 40+ years and I can assure you we’ve seen it all and that is why we do what we do. Once we get the letter from the plaintiffs attorney I would never try to directly contact the plaintiff without going through our attorneys. In fact, I can assure you that Jeff and his team would never have went to trial. The letter, as I said before, is likely “standard issue” if you will and never intended to take it further than that….almost like a scare tactic for lack of a better term. My thoughts are that as long as you follow code for your particular area, you will find that there are many ways to accomplish the same task. In a lot of his videos, waterproofing a shower for instance, he shows you at least four different ways at different price points and performance to meet code and successfully waterproof. Just because you disagree with the process doesn’t mean it’s wrong. In this particular video, I agree with Joe. I’m not sure I would use this screw system with this fence,or any fence, simply for the reasons he’s mentioned(structural strength considering vertical and horizontal forces) but the camo system works great for decks. As far as what you should and should not attempt….it’s no different than the Home Again with Bob Vila and This Old House. Jeff goes into a bit more detail IF you want to attempt these Jobs on your own. Obviously, if you don’t know what end of a hammer you’re supposed to use, you should not attempt any tasks and I suggest you attend a few Saturday morning classes at Home Depot or Lowe’s.
Hi Joe, as a seasoned carpenter I'm very familiar with the camo system and like it but would also be hesitant to use it on a vertical surface as you mentioned. The screws are a bit short for that application (longer ones are available) and he wasn't using the camo tool when driving in the screws (can't be done without space between boards). The tool is designed to space boards apart consistently, predrill for the screw heads, and countersink the screws only to the proper depth. It appeared to me that he was sinking them in a bit too far which can weaken the connection. Aside from that and Jeff thinking he's a know it all and can do no wrong lol, I generally like his videos and think he does great work and provides invaluable information to his viewers. I dont get that screw system on horizontal boards. There will be standing water in the holes hes created. If the screws were on the face then there wouldn't be. Also because the screws go further into the board the timber would absorb more moisture as it looks like the treatment is only on the outside.
I work by myself all the time. A squeeze clamp is way better at holding one side of a board. Clamp it to the post and rest a board on it. I’ve also done a couple decks with the camo system, works great does take more time and screws cost more as well. Be sure to add that to build cost.
bro, clamps are the ish, either use clamps like a boss or run ten string lines to make sure being remedial is as perfect as can be 🤣🤣🤣 that tool is just making wood like trex decking, and yes takes way longer...
I think reaction videos work great for things like performances, art, etc. But for a DIY/tutorial type video it feels like you're just siphoning someone else's hard work. Just my two cents

That's what I believe too. The 'review' is simply an attempt from a guy with 31K subscribers to post content from a creator with nearly 2 million subs and hope he can pull in views when people are searching for the more popular content. Half his videos are now 'review' videos. Meanwhile, the really busy fence builders are out there building fences and not wasting their time looking at what others are doing.
I really don’t know what the trouble is with this reaction video. Joe actually gives Jeff about 80% good comments about his work and in the end says It is one good way of doing it .,.As a homeowner spending thousands on a fence I want to know everything I can . Joe’s only concern was the camo nailing system. Mine too. Nobody Likes to have their work reviewed so I understand Jeff’s position. Here is my opinion. Joe reviews one video of Jeff’s hundreds of videos and it is mostly positive and Jeff almost takes him to Court. This is what the world is coming too. I would of liked to see the two men getting together over a beer and discussing their own ideas and laughing at the end .
@@yonodc5705 for instance when you install vynal flooring you are to leave a gap all around the room for expansion , he says those gaps that you leave along the wall are not for expansion at all ,its so if you need to replace a flooring in the middle you can use a floor spreader to separate the flooring and get the damaged flooring removed which is total bs and its impossible, you leave the gap because it expands and you cant spread the flooring and just remove the piece. He is just a diy so called handyman no knowledge just feeds bs to people

If you spend hours to put a video for your channel. And someone take it and use it for more subscribers (maybe, maybe not?) But who actually watch from 1 channel and go to the original channel and subscribe, there are, it should be few. Most likely, people would just subscribe the current one that they are viewing or best (they go out of the norm) subscribe both channels.

I’m a fan of both of your channels. I’ve learned a lot from both of you. I think he’s got a lot to offer in his videos, for a wide range of different jobs. And I really appreciate your fence videos, and your review videos of other fencing methods. It’s nice having a second professional opinion on the way someone else is doing something. I could easily watch one video and think “that’s looks like a great way to do it” and not know if it really is good or not. I thought your review was overall very positive and you’re very honest when your not familiar with something or if you don’t have experience with a particular method, so it’s not like your offering an opinion without a basis of understanding. I plan on DIY’ing my fence when I can afford to (when the cost of lumber comes back down), and I can’t even tell you how many horizontal fence videos I have watched (it’s A LOT). I’ve seen some that even I as a very novice DIYer could tell just didn’t seem right, and some that looked like sound processes. So it’s nice having some videos to compare processes to figure out what will be best for my situation. I think you handled it well, and clearly you were within guidelines. Seems odd they would want you to take down a positive review of one of their videos. Either way, keep doing what you’re doing! Happy you’re channel is still here!
Well, I really enjoy your reaction videos and your educational tips. You have valid questions, and you correct the errors made so others wouldn’t make the same mistakes cause so many of us who are ignorant watch and listen to them. Keep them coming.
I used the Kreg pocket hole system for vertical and horizontal build and building out door chairs and tables and found that the joints are outstanding in strength. I don’t know if this applies to the camo system but the angle appears to add strength when connecting the two pieces of wood
the idea of toenailing or angling through the wood is supposed to add quite a bit of strength and if you go from the edge of the board through at an angle, you would actually be going through more material; it seems like the system goes down from the edge just a bit so maybe it's a wash in material passed through when you lose that little bit having all of the screws hide is slick which is probably the best part of the system
I appreciate the way reaction videos with positive intent help consumers like me get multiple perspectives. I like Renovision and Jeff. I've learned a lot from him. Your video was a good one and promoted his channel if anything. Ridiculous to ask you to take out down.
I’ve watched (& Subscribed to) both channels. DIY is geared towards the “Happy Home Owner” so Non-Trades(people) 🙄 who want to buy a couple Tools and get their Hands Dirty. I think that’s a great thing. Way too many people can barely change a Lightbulb or preform Basic Maintenance at their Homes. DIY does show how to do some things without a Large Collection or Tools and how to do those Projects alone or maybe One or Two People who can Hold or Hand as needed. So peeking Peoples Interest and giving some Confidence only Helps all of us. Kudos to DIY 👍😉👏 That being said, I am a Lifelong Tradesman, the son of a Tradesman. I’ve never had a “Paper Rout” or “Made change”. Started as a “Gofer” and worked my way up to a “Ditch-digger” before earning a Journeymen Position in Residential then Industrial construction, then Transitioned to Industrial Maintenance. The Residential work I do now is at my or Friends/Family’s homes There are times while watching DIY videos when I kinda Groan and just say No. I don’t recall any Flat out Wrong things, so a “Weekend Warrior” will probably not Die , so 👍😉 Now in my opinion, he should welcome your(Joe’s) thoughts and advice when it comes to Fencing. I’ve helped Install and repair many different types of Fencing “Way back in the Day” (Hint: we didn’t have Any Battery Powered Tools) but now that I’ll be replacing our 7’ Privacy Fence with a 7 or 8 foot Shadowbox and have been watching Joe’s and SWI for months figuring out the best way to wind up with the best quality Fence when finished. Now I know I will NOT be doing it how I would’ve back in the 80s. Hopefully DIY will start collaborating with you (Joe), SWI and others so Everyone’s Content gets better.

I didn't believe you criticized his work, Jeff is great at his videos. He is always very informative and detailed. I enjoy watching both of you guys. In my opinion one should be open to critique, It makes us better and reminds us that every one is entitled to their opinions. With that said I do alot of work but I would not be able to be as informative as either of you guys.
Been a big fan of HomeRenovision, Jeff and his other channels. Generally he has a lot of experience behind him which drives his advice. Though I'm not affiliated with his channel I'm glad you were gave fair commentary, just as Jeff fairly gives advice too on good tips etc. I find what Jeff focuses on is efficiency and simplicity, and yes that may not always mean neatness but on this specific channel he is aiming at the DIYer like me
I’ve been following Jeff’s channel for awhile and I’m so disappointed in how he handled this! What a missed opportunity. He could have worked with your channel and again boosted both in the process. Your critique was profession, kind, fair, and balanced. I hope Jeff apologizes publicly. I hope his channel growth isn’t going to his head. Thanks for not making this ugly and for being transparent. Honestly, the only thing Jeff could really have good reason to be annoyed about is how you manipulated his photo.
I stopped watching RenoVision after the guy used sand under concrete blocks to level the structure, and argued in the comments with people saying that’s awfully wrong. I agree with your comment about the screws the same as the so called leveled deck will remain such after the first rain.
I don’t know about that cami system. Seems to me like double the work to hide a screw hole. I know nothing about fences but if you were that concerned would t you just fill the holes with wood putty?
The blind face with no attachments showing is just an upscale look. Filling holes with putty is not an option because driving a face screw should never leave a hole to fill. The face of the screws should be be driven flush with the board's surface to prevent an access point for water.
@@chrisgraham2904 Exactly. Driving a screw past the layer of pressure treatment defeats the purpose. Glad you pointed out the right way to fasten the screws.
That angled screw if water seeps in the screw hole will retain water and decay the wood whereas on the face water would weep downward instead of being built up on the top screw hole.
Glad you do this. Filtering out bad ideas from good from your professional POV is very useful. This guy sounds Canadian. Not that that’s a problem, but I used to be one and I have spidey senses for this kind of thing.

Jeff Thorman was a contractor at one point before doing RUclips. He's a hack and has a lot of negative feedback from customers he's done work for. He's all about money and doesn't like people criticising what he does that could potentially but a dent in his revenue stream. That's why he wanted the reaction video taken down. He's from Ottawa, Canada.

I've built quite a few horizontal deck board fences. Never considered using the camo system. A thing you definitely need to watch out for is inconsistent board width, especially with pt.. You get that piece of 5/4 that's a 1/4 or 1/2 inch wide, and it can mess up your whole line . I always bring my table saw and an edge router with me to fix these problems.
This Jeff Guy I have seen many of his videos and learned a lot. One thing to remember is that he's up in Canada and may be dealing with weather issues folks in the lower 48 don't have to deal with. Sometimes he throws out caveats with regards to climate. I didn't see major issues on your review. Perhaps the spouse wasn't communicating with the husband and things got ugly.
I'm a subscriber to RenoVision. I like their content. I'm new to your videos but I cant understand what RenoVision would have against you making a review video on something they did. Your opinion was fair, unbiased and majority of it was positive. Yes you questioned the longevity of using this hidden screw technique for fencing but it was totally fair to question to ask. After all, as I understand, fencing is your profession.
Regarding your point about the angle not being as strong as face fastening, seems to me this method would be considerably stronger if you were to account for the 'angle of incidence'. Much the same as 2" of armor plate on a tank front becomes 4" of armor once you begin to lay it down. So in this case, the screw has to travel through far more material before it exits the stock.
Well no because the strenght of the armor is resisting impact force while the screws are resisting pulling force. Steal is not wood and they dont behave the same.
i wouldn’t take it too personal tbh, i’d imagine they’re using some sort of service that flags videos automatically and you got caught in the crossfire.
I watch home renovation here in the UK, I think they are pretty informative videos. I don't see that you said anything untoward, I thought you were very fair in your reaction. Keep up the good work, great channel.
I don’t disagree that he provides a ton of content. Unfortunately, the installation practices he uses to build fences are unprofessional and will end up failing much sooner than a professionally installed fence. By putting these practices out into the world it gives the DIY community the impression that they are normal and correct.
Why is he using such a long bit on an impact driver? I just made a small fence and I ensured every cut on a board sat in wood treatment so they were protected and then covered it all in a silicone sealant that lasts for a few years to avoid and water ingress and projects even the screws without blocking the PZ head. He never used the tool he talked about... unless I missed something.
When the CAMO system is used on a 5/4" board it grabs 3/4" thickness. Since the screw is driven at a 45 deg. angle, there will actually be 1 inch of screw passing through the board. 1/4" of holding power is lost using the CAMO system, but that's a fair trade-off for the clean, blind look.
Joe, thanks for always trying to stay positive and maintain that “higher ground” standard we have come to expect from The Fence Expert, without putting yourself above anyone. Great job.
One thing to consider, is that many of the take-down notices are done through automated AI by Google/RUclips and it may not necessarily be the content creator themselves initiating it. Not that I post alot, and what I do tends to be private, but I got a DCMA takedown notice, and it was a recording of a 4th of July firework display - the copyright "infraction" or for the take down, was in the background, there was some music playing, and the music triggered the AI and issued the take down notice. For me it was just as easy to take it down, and silence the "offending" sounds. But so much of this is now done without any human interaction at all. Just something to consider.. But full marks keeping it positive, and I appreciate the reaction. Cheers!
I’m a big fan of Home Renovision’s channel. I can understand channels not wanting others to use their content without permission. I can also understand doing reaction videos. Reaction videos are popular across all genres I follow on RUclips. I feel that your reaction was informational and not disrespectful in nature at all. I subscribed to your channel based on how you’ve handled yourself in the comment section on this video and you too seem knowledgeable.
I have two different sized camo tools. You generally leave the tool on the board when drilling and screwing as it acts as a perfect spacer. Great for decking but they ain't designed for fencing mate. Not enough bite..
It stinks that happened to you, but honestly if it hadn't I am not sure I would have found your channel. I have been a paid sub of HomeDIYReno for over a year. I always though of Jeff as a class act guy. I saw in the comments that he did reach out to you and apologize. That is great. I am very happy I found your channel though. I have 3 separate areas on my property that I want to fence in. After watching this video I immediately subbed. I can already tell that your channel is going to be a big help in my fencing projects!
He seemed like he thought all his ideas were great. How dare you question his style!? I found your channel a few weeks ago bc a neighbor asked if I could replace her privacy fence. I've not done any wood work in 10 yrs other than build a case for my TV and Xbox, etc. and replaced the railings on my porch. So I needed someone to help trim the fat from my brain. Lol. You did the trick. I've enjoyed every video of yours that I have watched. The information you give overflows about as much as Scott Brown's concrete!!! Keep up the great content sir.
Actually going through the side of the lumber like that goes though more of the board then face fastening cuz it's on an angle and has more holding force .

Fan of Jeff, and saw the original video before the reaction. Think you did a balanced take on Jeff's fence. Still a fan of Jeff - gives me a lot of tips for working on project, especially since I work by myself. As far as the quality of craftmanship, I have a problem with most of the contractors out there, and I usually have to go behind and fix what they messed up.
@14:27 its likely equal, even tho there is less distance/material in spots, there is more sheer strength with the angles (especially for screws). Although you could make a video and test it lol
This was definitely 'fair use'. Too many people are happy to throw those copyright strikes without checking and understanding the content that used the original material. Kind of a shame, I follow his and your content!
I would say that from a creator standpoint, you pretty much show his whole video leaving you to gain all the ad revenue from his work. I realize it’s a reaction video but I feel like it’s a gray area and how much you show of the original video can put you on shaky ground regarding fair use. Obviously most small channels aren’t going to spend money on litigation and in most cases I would say that both channels win from exposure.
Jeff and his group are awesome, Love their videos. Sucks that Jeff’s wife didn’t like your free advertising for the USA market. But whatevs, the video is back!
To me that was an awesome shout out to RenoVision DIY and to go see more of his content. I also watch his videos and he is a great craftsman. If anything, this could help give him a boost in subscribers. To me that would be a win-win type of situation.
I don't think I could have stayed completely positive in this case. Your a better man than me. I seen some good tips but I also seen a lot of questionable stuff. Without going into too much detail, I would want more stability out of this large of a fence and would have gone with a thicker 2x face board, thats if I was to toenail them. I would have used a high tooth count fine finish blade for a "nice clean cut" lol. A few dabs of stain on those ends to blend it all in. Lastly please use your PPE if your making content for beginners. I know back in my day I had no room to talk but after a bad incident I always make sure I'm wearing mine or anyone working with me is. Wear your PPE is the best cost saving tip I can give to anyone because PPE is truly "cheap insurance".
So most of the copyright DMCA warnings are actually an automated system. Seeing as how you never got a message back from the HomeReno peeps just leads me to believe thats what happened. Ive had videos flagged with just a few seconds of someone's video flagged and just countering it with youtube takes it off usually. This may not be the case here but that is the most common that I have seen.
You do know he is from Canada right... little harder for us to take you Americans to court. Regardless, you taking the time and making sure your not in breach of any rules/laws with RUclips is spot on. Shame they wouldn’t deal with you directly,
Your right about that! Luckily, this issue was resolved and did not lead to cross-border litigation. It would have been an absolute nightmare for both parties.

After it is finished do you have any advice on making sure it lasts? The pickets will be cedar.
reaction vids are odd if you think about it. someone spends ages making a video. then someone can react to it and show the whole initial video with no credit. maybe reaction vids should pay some of the income to the original video?
Ole Boy is an absolute tool in my opinion. I can’t stand to watch any of his stuff (though I genuinely have tried on an occasion or two where there was a general subject I thought I could learn from; i.e. the first from scratch slab and shed he built). But I can not stomach his mirthless attitude and condescending tone. Where I’m from, how a person says something often says more that what they say. In this case I find him repelling enough that I couldn’t give him any time. I intentionally avoid their content because I know I’ll thumbs down no matter what and that would kind of be like me being a tool. He may have decent content, I wouldn’t know because I can’t get past him. For what it’s worth, your experience with him attempting to snuff anyone reviewing his stuff critically actually validates to some degree my ‘spidey sense’ of the guy.
That's a LOT of labor intensive prep and screwing... for not that much gain. About seven years ago I built 300' of cedar fence around our back yard, 5' tall vertical pickets with 1/2" gap between. Drove four face screws per picket. I stained it honey-gold with WoodGuard because I don't like the look of gray cedar. From 6' away, the screws are invisible. It's ready for another stain coat this summer, but still looks practically new. It should easily last 20 years... if the posts don't "bottom rot".
With our Canadian winters, snow, high winds, frost line …no one uses foam or anything like it. We drill 4’ deep, use 3000 psi concrete and 6x6 pressure treated posts. This fence was an embarrassment and needed to be called out.
I actually subscribed once to that channel and paid a membership because I needed some help. It turned out pointless and I got generic answers and blown off. Membership revoked, unsubscribed and never went back.
Jeff is super talented. The cool part is that its not just fences, of which he just taught a pro some tips of, but he know the same amount about so many other things. Well done Jeff!

I have been a long time sub of Home Renovations and came across your channel through the old RUclips algorithm and I'm rather surprised this happened. I mean, you never said anything negative about them at all! Hope it was just a misunderstanding.
Seems like it was a "sneaky" paid advertisement video for that system and they didn't like the simple questions over the long term weaknesses it had. They do alot of those "I liked this product" videos over there that are just payed adverts.
It was a positive review. It also got his video IN front of eyes that may not have known. They call it sharing for a reason. I don't see anything wrong with what you did. I now sub to his channel as well.

Horizontal fence are a nightmare because they eventually WARP LIKE CRAP so add in the wind+winter+post warping then you have an issue with the side screws.... So You are correct on this one :) it's gonna be an ugly sight :)
Admittedly, I’m kinda a Renovision fan boy. Dudes videos have literally saved me thousands of dollars by showing me how to do stuff and giving me the courage to DIY. That said I’m bummed about the copy right claim but glad they didn’t pursue it. If I had to guess, it was probably a knee jerk reaction then they realized it wasn’t a big deal. His whole family is involved in making their RUclips videos and I imagine it’s their main source of income. I’d feel a little protective too. Either way, you handled it well, Joe.
I think the issue was that you used a very large portion of his video with relatively few comments in between. At first glance this really seems like a steal. Maybe you could have cut the renovision video some more.
It's actually counter intuitive. The first thing someone looking for opinions on XYZ would do is go find the other guys video.

Compare Jeff ti Mike Holmes and the HGTV crowd and he is hands down looking out for the DIY crowd sirg helpful tips. Knock him for the copyright thing but he is one of the best resources for DIY on you tube.

Jeff made a reference in one of his live videos to people who sit and make reaction videos. Kinda inferred it was a lazy way to create content. He was not a fan. Now i know what he was talking about. He is generally not receptive to criticism but I enjoy his DIY oriented perspective.

You're 100% correct Joe. It's not as structurally sound at all on a vertical fence. In fact, I used to work for a decking manufacturer that used the Camo system and I can assure you that they wouldn't recommend their product for vertical applications. The forces involved are totally different, as you stated.

I just feel like "reaction videos" are a cheap way of making money off someone else's work/videos. I can somehow understand his frustration since someone sitting on chair making money out of his work and his video, he spent the time and money recording, editing, building and explaining his process you just hit the PLAY button. Also he sounds Canadian so it would be harder and more expensive for him to follow up with US Federal Court law suits. My suggestion is to show your viewers how YOU would do it and refer the viewers to that video to see how not to do it. But just sitting there talking about this individuals entire video/work seems lazy and cheap; but that's how I feel about all "reaction videos". I like that you were very respectful and knowledgeable, I would just suggest you show us how you would do it right and refer to his videos instead of showing us his entire video and just talk. Wish you and Renovision's the best.

@@tatsumaru12345 I know that reacting to music videos monetizes the artist and not the reacting party. Don’t know if it’s the case here. If you react on a music video or a song, you will get a “copyright claim”, RUclips gives the money to the original artist.
Additionally, if the artist does not allow the content to be posted, you will receive a “copyright strike”, I think if you get 3 of them, your channel will be taken down.

I disagree with this mentality. Creating and editing a video can be very time intense. Reaction videos such as this can provide valuable information for someone trying this DIY. Information that may be glossed over by the original content creator. With that said, there ARE reaction videos that fall right in line with a lazy approach. Again, I just find fault in the mentality that ALL reaction videos are lazy.
I don't understand why they wanted you to take this video down. I like their video, it has many good tips that you pointed out and I like your comments that help recognize and avoid the mistakes they made. We think it is better to stay as far as possible from any similar interest content creators on RUclips, even thou the Fence Expert has outstanding points on many DIY reaction videos with this DMCA event creator community has learned again the ups and downs of RUclipss policies which can be frustrating and confusing. We are glad we can see our favorite Expert back in business as well as Reno Vision for their interesting videos.

I don't think he is big into the community part of being a content creator in terms of channel to channel. In terms of channel to subscribers/members/clients, whatever, he is very much into community. It is his show, and when you watch it you can tell that he HAS a dream and a business plan around his channel. His videos are pretty good too, though.

@@scrumpers9100 - there are many excellent you tube tutorials on how to DIY correctly - Jeff's channel should be used as a guide and gauge on how NOT TO DIY !! never work on tasks that require a licensed trades person to complete and always use the correct PPE - Jeff the goat like to advocate the opposite of common sense .
Of course he’s a business man. He’s not doing this as a hobby or out of his mom’s basement in his spare time. He runs the channel like a business because for him, and a lot of others, it is a business. I can almost assure you that the meter Joe received was a sort of standard CAD letter that anyone would get. It is probably on the advice of their attorneys to not engage in dialog with the other party. In my place of business, if someone falls, we fill out an incident report. We do not give copies of that report out. As an outsider, you might wonder, well why not? Why wouldn’t you help this poor soul and just give it to them??? We are not going to freely hand them a document that they can then go to a personal injury attorney to sue us with. We have been in business for 40+ years and I can assure you we’ve seen it all and that is why we do what we do. Once we get the letter from the plaintiffs attorney I would never try to directly contact the plaintiff without going through our attorneys. In fact, I can assure you that Jeff and his team would never have went to trial. The letter, as I said before, is likely “standard issue” if you will and never intended to take it further than that….almost like a scare tactic for lack of a better term. My thoughts are that as long as you follow code for your particular area, you will find that there are many ways to accomplish the same task. In a lot of his videos, waterproofing a shower for instance, he shows you at least four different ways at different price points and performance to meet code and successfully waterproof. Just because you disagree with the process doesn’t mean it’s wrong. In this particular video, I agree with Joe. I’m not sure I would use this screw system with this fence,or any fence, simply for the reasons he’s mentioned(structural strength considering vertical and horizontal forces) but the camo system works great for decks. As far as what you should and should not attempt….it’s no different than the Home Again with Bob Vila and This Old House. Jeff goes into a bit more detail IF you want to attempt these Jobs on your own. Obviously, if you don’t know what end of a hammer you’re supposed to use, you should not attempt any tasks and I suggest you attend a few Saturday morning classes at Home Depot or Lowe’s.

Hi Joe, as a seasoned carpenter I'm very familiar with the camo system and like it but would also be hesitant to use it on a vertical surface as you mentioned. The screws are a bit short for that application (longer ones are available) and he wasn't using the camo tool when driving in the screws (can't be done without space between boards). The tool is designed to space boards apart consistently, predrill for the screw heads, and countersink the screws only to the proper depth. It appeared to me that he was sinking them in a bit too far which can weaken the connection. Aside from that and Jeff thinking he's a know it all and can do no wrong lol, I generally like his videos and think he does great work and provides invaluable information to his viewers. I dont get that screw system on horizontal boards. There will be standing water in the holes hes created. If the screws were on the face then there wouldn't be. Also because the screws go further into the board the timber would absorb more moisture as it looks like the treatment is only on the outside.
@@JoeEverest I sell timber, bricks etc for a living and even though I don't build fences seems like common sense.
I work by myself all the time. A squeeze clamp is way better at holding one side of a board. Clamp it to the post and rest a board on it. I’ve also done a couple decks with the camo system, works great does take more time and screws cost more as well. Be sure to add that to build cost.
bro, clamps are the ish, either use clamps like a boss or run ten string lines to make sure being remedial is as perfect as can be 🤣🤣🤣

I think reaction videos work great for things like performances, art, etc. But for a DIY/tutorial type video it feels like you're just siphoning someone else's hard work. Just my two cents

That's what I believe too. The 'review' is simply an attempt from a guy with 31K subscribers to post content from a creator with nearly 2 million subs and hope he can pull in views when people are searching for the more popular content.
Half his videos are now 'review' videos. Meanwhile, the really busy fence builders are out there building fences and not wasting their time looking at what others are doing.

@@yonodc5705 for instance when you install vynal flooring you are to leave a gap all around the room for expansion , he says those gaps that you leave along the wall are not for expansion at all ,its so if you need to replace a flooring in the middle you can use a floor spreader to separate the flooring and get the damaged flooring removed which is total bs and its impossible, you leave the gap because it expands and you cant spread the flooring and just remove the piece. He is just a diy so called handyman no knowledge just feeds bs to people

If you spend hours to put a video for your channel. And someone take it and use it for more subscribers (maybe, maybe not?) But who actually watch from 1 channel and go to the original channel and subscribe, there are, it should be few.
Most likely, people would just subscribe the current one that they are viewing or best (they go out of the norm) subscribe both channels.

I’m a fan of both of your channels. I’ve learned a lot from both of you. I think he’s got a lot to offer in his videos, for a wide range of different jobs. And I really appreciate your fence videos, and your review videos of other fencing methods. It’s nice having a second professional opinion on the way someone else is doing something. I could easily watch one video and think “that’s looks like a great way to do it” and not know if it really is good or not. I thought your review was overall very positive and you’re very honest when your not familiar with something or if you don’t have experience with a particular method, so it’s not like your offering an opinion without a basis of understanding.
I plan on DIY’ing my fence when I can afford to (when the cost of lumber comes back down), and I can’t even tell you how many horizontal fence videos I have watched (it’s A LOT). I’ve seen some that even I as a very novice DIYer could tell just didn’t seem right, and some that looked like sound processes. So it’s nice having some videos to compare processes to figure out what will be best for my situation.
I think you handled it well, and clearly you were within guidelines. Seems odd they would want you to take down a positive review of one of their videos. Either way, keep doing what you’re doing! Happy you’re channel is still here!

I used the Kreg pocket hole system for vertical and horizontal build and building out door chairs and tables and found that the joints are outstanding in strength. I don’t know if this applies to the camo system but the angle appears to add strength when connecting the two pieces of wood

the idea of toenailing or angling through the wood is supposed to add quite a bit of strength
and if you go from the edge of the board through at an angle, you would actually be going through more material; it seems like the system goes down from the edge just a bit so maybe it's a wash in material passed through when you lose that little bit
having all of the screws hide is slick which is probably the best part of the system

7:04 I use a 12 inch one handed clamp to get it near the position then use a rubber mallet to fine tune it.

I’ve watched (& Subscribed to) both channels. DIY is geared towards the “Happy Home Owner” so Non-Trades(people) 🙄 who want to buy a couple Tools and get their Hands Dirty. I think that’s a great thing. Way too many people can barely change a Lightbulb or preform Basic Maintenance at their Homes. DIY does show how to do some things without a Large Collection or Tools and how to do those Projects alone or maybe One or Two People who can Hold or Hand as needed. So peeking Peoples Interest and giving some Confidence only Helps all of us. Kudos to DIY 👍😉👏
That being said, I am a Lifelong Tradesman, the son of a Tradesman. I’ve never had a “Paper Rout” or “Made change”. Started as a “Gofer” and worked my way up to a “Ditch-digger” before earning a Journeymen Position in Residential then Industrial construction, then Transitioned to Industrial Maintenance. The Residential work I do now is at my or Friends/Family’s homes
There are times while watching DIY videos when I kinda Groan and just say No. I don’t recall any Flat out Wrong things, so a “Weekend Warrior” will probably not Die , so 👍😉
Now in my opinion, he should welcome your(Joe’s) thoughts and advice when it comes to Fencing. I’ve helped Install and repair many different types of Fencing “Way back in the Day” (Hint: we didn’t have Any Battery Powered Tools) but now that I’ll be replacing our 7’ Privacy Fence with a 7 or 8 foot Shadowbox and have been watching Joe’s and SWI for months figuring out the best way to wind up with the best quality Fence when finished. Now I know I will NOT be doing it how I would’ve back in the 80s.
Hopefully DIY will start collaborating with you (Joe), SWI and others so Everyone’s Content gets better.

I didn't believe you criticized his work, Jeff is great at his videos. He is always very informative and detailed. I enjoy watching both of you guys. In my opinion one should be open to critique, It makes us better and reminds us that every one is entitled to their opinions. With that said I do alot of work but I would not be able to be as informative as either of you guys.
Been a big fan of HomeRenovision, Jeff and his other channels. Generally he has a lot of experience behind him which drives his advice. Though I'm not affiliated with his channel I'm glad you were gave fair commentary, just as Jeff fairly gives advice too on good tips etc. I find what Jeff focuses on is efficiency and simplicity, and yes that may not always mean neatness but on this specific channel he is aiming at the DIYer like me

I stopped watching RenoVision after the guy used sand under concrete blocks to level the structure, and argued in the comments with people saying that’s awfully wrong. I agree with your comment about the screws the same as the so called leveled deck will remain such after the first rain.
I don’t know about that cami system. Seems to me like double the work to hide a screw hole. I know nothing about fences but if you were that concerned would t you just fill the holes with wood putty?
The blind face with no attachments showing is just an upscale look. Filling holes with putty is not an option because driving a face screw should never leave a hole to fill. The face of the screws should be be driven flush with the board's surface to prevent an access point for water.

That angled screw if water seeps in the screw hole will retain water and decay the wood whereas on the face water would weep downward instead of being built up on the top screw hole.

Jeff Thorman was a contractor at one point before doing RUclips. He's a hack and has a lot of negative feedback from customers he's done work for. He's all about money and doesn't like people criticising what he does that could potentially but a dent in his revenue stream. That's why he wanted the reaction video taken down.

I've built quite a few horizontal deck board fences. Never considered using the camo system. A thing you definitely need to watch out for is inconsistent board width, especially with pt.. You get that piece of 5/4 that's a 1/4 or 1/2 inch wide, and it can mess up your whole line . I always bring my table saw and an edge router with me to fix these problems.

This Jeff Guy I have seen many of his videos and learned a lot. One thing to remember is that he's up in Canada and may be dealing with weather issues folks in the lower 48 don't have to deal with. Sometimes he throws out caveats with regards to climate. I didn't see major issues on your review. Perhaps the spouse wasn't communicating with the husband and things got ugly.
I'm a subscriber to RenoVision. I like their content. I'm new to your videos but I cant understand what RenoVision would have against you making a review video on something they did. Your opinion was fair, unbiased and majority of it was positive. Yes you questioned the longevity of using this hidden screw technique for fencing but it was totally fair to question to ask. After all, as I understand, fencing is your profession.

Regarding your point about the angle not being as strong as face fastening, seems to me this method would be considerably stronger if you were to account for the 'angle of incidence'. Much the same as 2" of armor plate on a tank front becomes 4" of armor once you begin to lay it down. So in this case, the screw has to travel through far more material before it exits the stock.
Well no because the strenght of the armor is resisting impact force while the screws are resisting pulling force. Steal is not wood and they dont behave the same.

Jeff is a great guy and offers a ridiculously large array of content for no charge. Not sure how anyone could say something negative about him.
I don’t disagree that he provides a ton of content. Unfortunately, the installation practices he uses to build fences are unprofessional and will end up failing much sooner than a professionally installed fence. By putting these practices out into the world it gives the DIY community the impression that they are normal and correct.
I am a home renovision follower, y like the work he does, every person, company has different techniques and ways to work.
Why is he using such a long bit on an impact driver?
I just made a small fence and I ensured every cut on a board sat in wood treatment so they were protected and then covered it all in a silicone sealant that lasts for a few years to avoid and water ingress and projects even the screws without blocking the PZ head.
He never used the tool he talked about... unless I missed something.
You handled that situation great. Very knowledgeable guy.

Joe, over the years of comparing 5/4 boards to 2x6, almost every application I’ve seen them used in the 5/4 last longer.
Any input on this?
When the CAMO system is used on a 5/4" board it grabs 3/4" thickness. Since the screw is driven at a 45 deg. angle, there will actually be 1 inch of screw passing through the board. 1/4" of holding power is lost using the CAMO system, but that's a fair trade-off for the clean, blind look.

One thing to consider, is that many of the take-down notices are done through automated AI by Google/RUclips and it may not necessarily be the content creator themselves initiating it. Not that I post alot, and what I do tends to be private, but I got a DCMA takedown notice, and it was a recording of a 4th of July firework display - the copyright "infraction" or for the take down, was in the background, there was some music playing, and the music triggered the AI and issued the take down notice. For me it was just as easy to take it down, and silence the "offending" sounds. But so much of this is now done without any human interaction at all.
Just something to consider.. But full marks keeping it positive, and I appreciate the reaction.

I’m a big fan of Home Renovision’s channel. I can understand channels not wanting others to use their content without permission. I can also understand doing reaction videos. Reaction videos are popular across all genres I follow on RUclips. I feel that your reaction was informational and not disrespectful in nature at all. I have two different sized camo tools. You generally leave the tool on the board when drilling and screwing as it acts as a perfect spacer. Great for decking but they ain't designed for fencing mate. Not enough bite..
It stinks that happened to you, but honestly if it hadn't I am not sure I would have found your channel. I have been a paid sub of HomeDIYReno for over a year. I always though of Jeff as a class act guy. I saw in the comments that he did reach out to you and apologize. That is great. I am very happy I found your channel though. I have 3 separate areas on my property that I want to fence in. After watching this video I immediately subbed. I can already tell that your channel is going to be a big help in my fencing projects!

I found your channel a few weeks ago bc a neighbor asked if I could replace her privacy fence. I've not done any wood work in 10 yrs other than build a case for my TV and Xbox, etc. and replaced the railings on my porch. So I needed someone to help trim the fat from my brain. Lol. You did the trick. I've enjoyed every video of yours that I have watched. The information you give overflows about as much as Scott Brown's concrete!!! Keep up the great content sir.

Actually going through the side of the lumber like that goes though more of the board then face fastening cuz it's on an angle and has more holding force .

Fan of Jeff, and saw the original video before the reaction. Think you did a balanced take on Jeff's fence. Still a fan of Jeff - gives me a lot of tips for working on project, especially since I work by myself. As far as the quality of craftmanship, I have a problem with most of the contractors out there, and I usually have to go behind and fix what they messed up.

@14:27 its likely equal, even tho there is less distance/material in spots, there is more sheer strength with the angles (especially for screws). Although you could make a video and test it lol
This was definitely 'fair use'. Too many people are happy to throw those copyright strikes without checking and understanding the content that used the original material. Kind of a shame, I follow his and your content!
I would say that from a creator standpoint, you pretty much show his whole video leaving you to gain all the ad revenue from his work. I realize it’s a reaction video but I feel like it’s a gray area and how much you show of the original video can put you on shaky ground regarding fair use. Obviously most small channels aren’t going to spend money on litigation and in most cases I would say that both channels win from exposure.

To me that was an awesome shout out to RenoVision DIY and to go see more of his content. I also watch his videos and he is a great craftsman. If anything, this could help give him a boost in subscribers. To me that would be a win-win type of situation.

I don't think I could have stayed completely positive in this case. Your a better man than me. I seen some good tips but I also seen a lot of questionable stuff. Without going into too much detail, I would want more stability out of this large of a fence and would have gone with a thicker 2x face board, thats if I was to toenail them. I would have used a high tooth count fine finish blade for a "nice clean cut" lol. A few dabs of stain on those ends to blend it all in. Lastly please use your PPE if your making content for beginners. I know back in my day I had no room to talk but after a bad incident I always make sure I'm wearing mine or anyone working with me is. Wear your PPE is the best cost saving tip I can give to anyone because PPE is truly "cheap insurance".
So most of the copyright DMCA warnings are actually an automated system. Seeing as how you never got a message back from the HomeReno peeps just leads me to believe thats what happened. Ive had videos flagged with just a few seconds of someone's video flagged and just countering it with youtube takes it off usually. This may not be the case here but that is the most common that I have seen.
You do know he is from Canada right... little harder for us to take you Americans to court. Regardless, you taking the time and making sure your not in breach of any rules/laws with RUclips is spot on. Shame they wouldn’t deal with you directly,
Your right about that! Luckily, this issue was resolved and did not lead to cross-border litigation. It would have been an absolute nightmare for both parties.

We are getting a fence put up on a house we just bought to replace one that is pretty old and leaning. Standard wood post with dog ears vertically attached. After it is finished do you have any advice on making sure it lasts? The pickets will be cedar.

reaction vids are odd if you think about it. someone spends ages making a video. then someone can react to it and show the whole initial video with no credit. maybe reaction vids should pay some of the income to the original video?
Ole Boy is an absolute tool in my opinion. I can’t stand to watch any of his stuff (though I genuinely have tried on an occasion or two where there was a general subject I thought I could learn from; i.e. the first from scratch slab and shed he built). But I can not stomach his mirthless attitude and condescending tone. Where I’m from, how a person says something often says more that what they say. In this case I find him repelling enough that I couldn’t give him any time. I intentionally avoid their content because I know I’ll thumbs down no matter what and that would kind of be like me being a tool. He may have decent content, I wouldn’t know because I can’t get past him. For what it’s worth, your experience with him attempting to snuff anyone reviewing his stuff critically actually validates to some degree my ‘spidey sense’ of the guy.

That's a LOT of labor intensive prep and screwing... for not that much gain. About seven years ago I built 300' of cedar fence around our back yard, 5' tall vertical pickets with 1/2" gap between. Drove four face screws per picket. I stained it honey-gold with WoodGuard because I don't like the look of gray cedar. From 6' away, the screws are invisible. It's ready for another stain coat this summer, but still looks practically new. It should easily last 20 years... if the posts don't "bottom rot".

With our Canadian winters, snow, high winds, frost line …no one uses foam or anything like it. We drill 4’ deep, use 3000 psi concrete and 6x6 pressure treated posts. This fence was an embarrassment and needed to be called out.
I actually subscribed once to that channel and paid a membership because I needed some help. It turned out pointless and I got generic answers and blown off. Membership revoked, unsubscribed and never went back.
Jeff is super talented. The cool part is that its not just fences, of which he just taught a pro some tips of, but he know the same amount about so many other things. Well done Jeff!

I have been a long time sub of Home Renovations and came across your channel through the old RUclips algorithm and I'm rather surprised this happened. I mean, you never said anything negative about them at all! Hope it was just a misunderstanding.
Seems like it was a "sneaky" paid advertisement video for that system and they didn't like the simple questions over the long term weaknesses it had. They do alot of those "I liked this product" videos over there that are just payed adverts.
He has a bad reputation in Ottawa (where he operated). I lived there for 7 years. He threatens anyone who posts any negative experiences with him.
It was a positive review. It also got his video IN front of eyes that may not have known. They call it sharing for a reason. I don't see anything wrong with what you did. I now sub to his channel as well.

Horizontal fence are a nightmare because they eventually WARP LIKE CRAP so add in the wind+winter+post warping then you have an issue with the side screws.... So You are correct on this one :) it's gonna be an ugly sight :)
I think both parties acted fairly and respectfully. It seemed like common sense prevailed in the end.
I did not see an issue with the video. Jeff is a great guy gives you confidence you can do things without hiring a contractor.
