I bought a 2012 Silverado 1500 WT with 284,000 miles. I have driven it for three years and only have needed to change the oil and just today I had to replace the radiator. It's fantastic.
Little over 200,000 miles on my 2013 silverado no major issues... just replaced one coil and an o2 sensor and plugs ... does burn oil between oil changes now... pretty good truck i must say i think i got my moneys worth out of it ...
Glad you mentioned the heater hoses. Any of the 99-13 chevy trucks have that as a decently common problem with the plastic connectors breaking and then losing all coolant. Another one I personally wanted to mention is if that little ground strap didn’t fix weird electrical issuesI’d try the battery cables. Pretty common for the positive and negative cables to corrode internally and cause the whole vehicle electrical system to go haywire (door locks opening and closing while driving, radio completely shutting off and turning back on, gauge cluster going to resting position while vehicle is on, etc).
If your having trouble with it smoking during start up or oil consumption start with the driver side valve cover. The factory pcv valve port gets clogged and causes these issues. The updated aftermarket ones fix this issue. Look it up if your having oil consumption problems this fixed mine
2012- 5.3 here w/ 100k miles…. Really no major issues… I run mobile 1 oil and have serviced the trans @30k - (pan drop filter and fluid) … love this video w/ some good tips… I definitely am worried about the AFM issues… I feel like Im over maintaining the truck… but it’s piece of mind… and who wants to buy a new truck now days with these crazy prices?
At 9:40, the LSD additive. If you contact chevy, they tell you not to use it with G80 rpo code trucks and SUVs. The G80 is a posi lsd in cars, but the G80 on trucks and SUVs is a locker and doesnt require the additive. I contacted chevy a few times to figure it out as I have a 08 PPV Tahoe with G80. Just for anyone curious
Yea it is a weighted mechanical Locker and no additive needed.I have had many in my gm trucks and they are good for light everyday use,but will not stand up to serious off-road abuse..
2010 Silverado 4.8 with 190K, besides basic maintenance, I have changed the brakes, wheel bearings, the whole front end, spark plugs, heater hoses, rear main seal, valve cover gaskets, and oil pan gasket. Truck runs like a champ! Hopefully I get another 100k miles out of it!
Just bought a 2013 Silverado with only 70,000 miles (114,000km). Great find, our used market here is pretty much everything over 250000 miles and 25-30 thousand dollars....
Also to add on to the top issues with the GM trucks those years with the AFM (Active Fuel Management) is the lifters on the cylinders that shut off during the 4 cylinder mode (1, 4, 6, and 7) collapsing. If your truck is misfiring really bad on one of those cylinders be ready to pull the head and replace lifters. Happened on my father's 09 GMC 1500 Z71 with the 5.3L and 247k miles
I have 2013 GMC Sierra. bought brand new. It is a POS! has the GMC known lifter/cam shaft defect! Why isn"t there a class action suit against GMC for continuing to push out defective engines???
@@dannymartinez8522 my 2013 6.2ltr 8 cyclinder doesn't have the AFM. There is nothing to disconnect. Mine has the faulty lifters that GMC has known about for probaby 10 or more years and hasn't fixed.

I thrown my engine cover away years ago. I've had problems with headlights and taillights not working. Headlights needed new plugs. Taillights had corsion that needed cleaned off. The best thing you can do to any vehicle that's up there in mileage is keep changing that oil every 5k kilometers or 3k miles on a GM flush coolant every 2 years the rest is just maintenance really... spark plugs every 4 years or so differential oil change every 2 years transmission oil starts to smell burnt flush it out... GM trucks are the best in the business follow these steps and your GM truck or car will last a long time
Thanks man. Lots of us grew up without being shown how to do things like this. The Internet has helped me out so many times over the last couple decades.

If the main ground strap is ok and you still have weird electrical issues, there are several other ground straps around the vehicle that should be checked, especially if the truck has spent much time in the salt belt. My 2013 calls for dexos specified oil which I think automatically puts you in the synthetic camp and there is an oil life indicator in the driver information system that can help if it was appropriately reset at the last change. Mine is running good with 170k miles. Got the big 4.8 with the 4-speed ottermatic. I bought it recently and am currently doing plugs, wires, air filter, hoses and a few other "catch-up" items since I don't have a full history on it.
Got a 2011, been a pretty good truck. Power steering pump went out at about 70K. Went through both window regulators in the rear windows (extended cab). Had one leaking cylinder in left rear brake. Runs like a champ. Gonna keep in running for as longs as the wheels stay on it.
As odd as it sounds if the small ground wire between the firewall and hood is rotted out and broken you'll get buzzing and crackling on the FM radio . Had this issue on my 2012 Sierra . Replaced the ground wire to the hood radio issue fixed .

09 Silverado with 176K miles on it. So far I've had to replace the throttle body, Bank 1 downstream sensor, throttle position sensor, and the dashboard plastic (got a huge crack going across the whole thing.) Things I haven't replaced are some interior trim pieces that have just kinda come "loose" but not in such a way they make noise so it's not anything I prioritize. Today I got a code for the bank 1 sensor 1 O2 sensor, so I guess I'll be replacing that. Thus far the engine and transmission have been rock solid as far as their performance.
It's the road salts.... during winter time that eats up ... the under side of vehicles. My 2013 silverado.... within 4 corners of the states, has no rust at 257k miles.
P219A code on these trucks? Haven’t found much information. Replaced both upstream oxygen sensors with denso. Cleaned mass airflow sensor, changed filter with delco. Two quarts of mystery mix oil and hasn’t came back.

I bought a 2012 April of last year. When I buy a used vehicle, I always change all fluids front to back even the gear oil in front and back differentials. The truck takes 6 quarts of full synthetic 5w30 oil. Here's what happened to me one day.... In January my family and I were coming home from taking my son to the doctor when the check engine light came on. I got the truck home (Thank God) hooked it up to my OBDII scanner and it wash the oil pressure sensor. I was going to replace it but a guy on here told me to check my oil first. When I checked it, the dipstick didn't have a drop of oil on it. (I FLIPPED OUT) I just paid $18K on this truck! So, I went ahead and ordered both valve covers because I wanted both of them to be clean and to also match one another. I've installed both of them, but I've not checked to see if it worked because after installing them the passenger side pcv outlet on the new one has a flared end on it and the original didn't have that. So, I went to Advanced Auto to buy a rubber hose to use on it after I cut the pressure clip off of the pcv hose. I also decided to get me and new gas cap while I was at it. Anyways, I hope and pray that the new valve covers help the "Oil Consumption Problem." I'm sort of worried about it though because that's a lot of oil being consumed in just 4,000 - 4,500 miles. Yes, I've also checked for leaks and there were none. I've seen vehicles that are burning oil, but this truck doesn't do like that. The only time I've seen blue smoke out of the exhaust pipe is when climbing a hill, but it's just a small amount and then it's gone. If you were not paying attention to it, you wouldn't notice it. I've also checked my antifreeze for oil to and if good. Another thing, after I change the oil the dipstick doesn't read right which has me stumped. It should be on the full area, but it shows as if I put 12 quarts instead of 6. I'm thinking it got the wrong dipstick in it, but if anyone knows something different let me know
If it feels like it is misfiring, but you have replaced all the spark plugs and wires. More than likely your transmission is going out when the converter is about to fail it will feel like a slight misfire.
just bought 09 1500 silverado did your fuel pump go out, if so how many miles, my older 96 chevy 1500 transmission out 218k fuel pump 240k intake manifold blew up at 260k just trying to figure out what will go out next oh yes and of course fan clutch water pump and heater hoses less than 180k also someone else mentioned a plugin afm bypass to prevent lifter damage i am seriously considering that afm only seems to kick in about 68 miles or less per hour
I just hit 225k on my 07 Tahoe Z71 (11/30/23) never encountered a tick but i am asha of using the oil life system but now i do 5k or ever 6months with full synthetic oil Valvoline FullSynHM
Would have been nice to mention that AFM may may guarantee that you will not have concerns with a high mileage engine ! Your only concern will be to do high cost repairs to your engine , or to get a replacement engine without AFM !
I still like these trucks, despite the fact that they're not the best on gas nor the most reliable vehicles ever. Better than the older Silverado trucks but not as costly as today's Silverado trucks.
Almost nothing specific to 2007-2013 Chevy Silverado 1500 Trucks. Could have been a 66 impala recommendations. Not that info was bad just so generic could have been ANY car.
I could be mistaken, but I don't think that model ever came with a limited slip. they have a mechanical locking diff The "Eaton G80". Great video though. Very informative!

I have a 2014 Silverado with 155k miles only major issue was ac condenser went out and I guess I just replaced my lower ball joints Transmission and engine run good as new no slipping, no loss in power
I worked on a 2007- 1500- silverado for about a year what a piece of junk, heat and air conditioning and vent problems and GM knows about it, example select ac and heater comes on and won't change or vents go whacki couldn't figure out settings selected, computer issues in the dash. Recommended Fix replacement of heater control stack in middle of dash, Very Expensive, and this truck only had 81,000 Miles. Now under the spare tire attached to bed is a black box some have 4-6 large brass looking connectors and when salt and water corrode them it causes it to send false messages throughout the truck and computer sends false codes. Like Bad fuel pump and a host of other things, little black box and connectors very Expensive and after replacing dealership has Reprogram everything. Very Expensive.
Thats crazy I've sank my truck in deep water multiple times no issues other then maf codes and o2 codes cuz intake tube came off and had exhaust leaks. I have my 11 with dual exhaust long tubes cold air pipe with factory box and oem filter with dod tuned out and no issues
Driving a 17 Silverado High Country 6.2L. Coolant will be 5years next April. Only 43,000 kms. Is it necessary to replace it? Great content as always. Cheers
I have 1 question I own a 2008 Chevy Silverado 1500 LT extended cab I replace the transmission from the dealership it use to run really smooth and strong once replace but after a year it started to get lazy again and it takes on me to press on the gas to go faster on small hills should I be worried?
the tech missed the power steering fluid color. His looks red. It should be golden colored. The red is probably transfluid that someone used in a pinch instead of dropping $30 per pint for the unicorn blood at the GM dealer.
just bought 09 1500 158k miles and my power steer fluid was red also? so when i say that red color i was thinking of going to dealer to buy that special fluid so i thought its supposed to be red? i had oreilly computer say that they had a matching fluid by valvaline its clear. i pumped it out poured in new ran it for 1 weel pumped it out 2 more times now its clean like new and feels so smooth when i turn it.
I thought this was going to be issues specific to this vehicle itself, but this is literally just basic maintenance. Doesn't say anything about this car that you don't have to do for basically almost every other vehicle on the road
I have a 2013 sierra with 4.8L and 200k mi. No AFM and no lifter issues lol.. And guys i knew at the time i got it made fun of the size.. I still have my truck on the road
You missed so many things. That's just routine inspection everyone should do before buying a used car. If you want to be specific, brake petal switch, electric window switches (all doors), steering angle sensors, evap solenoid (P0446), extended cab rear door latches, lifters for AFM (if equiped), 4 wheel drive engagement (if equiped), just to name a few specific to this year range.
We have a 2005 Chevy Silverado, we keep having bulbs burn out the one side maybe the other side will happen. We had it CHECK & CHECK NO one can Find Any Problem !!?? Can you HELP US PLEASE !!!??
Lifters and camshaft at 160k. Regular lifter failed. Originally expected to be one of the afm/dod ones but nope. Get her back tomorrow. Should’ve done the delete kit but originally bought everything for just a lifter job didn’t want to waste anymore time smh
Cylinder shut down ruins motors. Floods cylinders with oil. Burns oil and fowls out plugs and oxygen sensor. I being tired of replacing plugs and oxygen sensor. Removed solenoids replaced top of motor deleting program. Now I have a good running truck. Not burning oil. Also no hesitation to turn on cylinder fire when pulling into traffic. Cylinder delete is a terrible idea. Its for emissions but once you start burning oil not very good for emissions.
I have a hard time starting the engine once it gets below 0degc here in canada, d9es anyone have any tips? I swapped plugs and replaced start als9 have had the fuel lines cleaned through high pressure chemical wash and fuel injectors cleaned. Is it possibly bad fuel pump? Battery is fine the only problem is during the cold months 2012 silverado ls 4.8l for reference

I'm thinking it got the wrong dipstick in it, but if anyone knows something different let me know
My heated seats always turn on and off randomly and lights dim at night randomly could this be the gray strap wire that gets green over time
Good video, thanks. Fuel filter in tank?
If it feels like it is misfiring, but you have replaced all the spark plugs and wires. More than likely your transmission is going out when the converter is about to fail it will feel like a slight misfire.
Awesome, handy to have this saved. Moved to Canada and picked up a 2012 5.3 4x4, love it but intimidated at the same time coming from European cars 😅
368090 on my 2006 Silverado 1500 4x4 oil change every 3000 So far so good
Original engine? Original transmission?
just bought 09 1500 silverado did your fuel pump go out, if so how many miles, my older 96 chevy 1500 transmission out 218k fuel pump 240k intake manifold blew up at 260k just trying to figure out what will go out next oh yes and of course fan clutch water pump and heater hoses less than 180k also someone else mentioned a plugin afm bypass to prevent lifter damage i am seriously considering that afm only seems to kick in about 68 miles or less per hour
No cabin air filter? My 01 basic Silverado has 2
No these trucks don't have em but they sell a retrofit kit basically. The 14 and up do though
I feel like this video applies to any make/model used vehicle, good video for the beginners out there
Same. I thought I might learn something in the video. I was wrong.
I just hit 225k on my 07 Tahoe Z71 (11/30/23) never encountered a tick but i am asha of using the oil life system but now i do 5k or ever 6months with full synthetic oil Valvoline FullSynHM
2013 6.2 liter w 271k miles normal maintenance still running strong as first day. Only change oil pressure switch. 👍👍
Did you say check the tranny fluid in drive and idling
You said check transmission fluid in drive. I think it should be checked in park. At least that is what my owners manual says.
Would have been nice to mention that AFM may may guarantee that you will not have concerns with a high mileage engine !
Your only concern will be to do high cost repairs to your engine , or to get a replacement engine without AFM !
Except you can tune it out completely for like 30 bucks... Lol
M
Sooo the transmission and transfer case both use ATF Dexron VI rt.????
I have an 08 Silverado, and did find a cab filter and replaced it. Almost lol cars after about the 2000’s come with one.
13 1500 4.8 with 290k and runs beautifully 😉
I still like these trucks, despite the fact that they're not the best on gas nor the most reliable vehicles ever. Better than the older Silverado trucks but not as costly as today's Silverado trucks.
I have a 2012 4.8 that gives me 21 mpg in the highway in city is awful
@@brianpatino2366 that’s good mileage
Great video I just bought a 2013 Friday
How’s it been?? Reading lots of issues but can’t afford a new truck. It’s. 2013 4x4 super clean with only 130,000km Canada west cost truck
Very informative!
the g80 is a limited-slip differential that locks in after a certain wheel speed but cant be manually engaged.
Thats basically what G80 is
Great video thank you for the knowledge and informative steps for routine maintenance. I just bought this truck it is my first truck and your video helped me a lot. Definitely deserves a like, share & subscription.
+Tee Mack Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
How’s the truck been?
I'm having an issue getting the fuse box cover back on. Can you do a video or explain the procedure on taking it on and off?
+@terrysgamingzone1390 We do not have a video for this repair right now, but we'll keep this request in mind for a future video! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Great video. I have told my friends to watch your videos. Best how to vids and your TRQ parts are top notch. Thank you!
Gm was a good company from 07 and down. Even better was 2013 after that they went down hill.
I have a 2014 Silverado with 155k miles only major issue was ac condenser went out and I guess I just replaced my lower ball joints
Transmission and engine run good as new no slipping, no loss in power
I just got a 2013. 211,000 miles 4.8 engine it runs like a top
I got a 2013 with 316k miles and it runs great. I’ll drive it to another country no prob
I need to replace my timing chain in mine any advice?
Driving a 17 Silverado High Country 6.2L. Coolant will be 5years next April. Only 43,000 kms. Is it necessary to replace it? Great content as always. Cheers
Yes likely the pH of the coolant will start to become acitic
There’s a cheap tool you can buy that’ll tell you if it’s good or not
Can you make one for the new body style 14-18 chevy/gmc 1500
this is honestly so general that everything explained applies to all vehicles. nothing was shown specific to nbs pickups. video is incorrectly titled.
@@shawnr8158 hmmm, great point..
2013 5.3 1500 169,800 only thing I needed to replace was an oxygen sensor
Got an 08 with 105,000 miles. Been thru a few starters and one wheel bearing. That's about it.
If the battery is still doing its job why replace it
I have 1 question I own a 2008 Chevy Silverado 1500 LT extended cab I replace the transmission from the dealership it use to run really smooth and strong once replace but after a year it started to get lazy again and it takes on me to press on the gas to go faster on small hills should I be worried?
Is that undercarraige rust normal? Just purchased a truck orginally from MN, im in FL - new to this rust convo
the tech missed the power steering fluid color.
I found a good deal in a 2006 silverado & a 2008 which truck is more reliable?
06
2006, not even a contest.
Depends on the specs of each but 2006
06 is better. 08 probably needs Active Fuel Management lifters replaced soon.
Can you put DOT4 fluid with the existing DOT3? Or will that cause issues?
Yes you can mix them. Dot 4 is a better version of dot3 (higher boiling point)
I thought this was going to be issues specific to this vehicle itself, but this is literally just basic maintenance. Doesn't say anything about this car that you don't have to do for basically almost every other vehicle on the road
Oil fill cap is missing early in video I noticed . Replayed it to confirm.
I have a 2013 sierra with 4.8L and 200k mi. No AFM and no lifter issues lol.. And guys i knew at the time i got it made fun of the size.. I still have my truck on the road
My 09 5.3L doesn't have a dip stick for the trans. So what do I do.
I have a 08 with 240,000 running pretty good
We have a 2005 Chevy Silverado, we keep having bulbs burn out the one side maybe the other side will happen.
Does this apply to tahoes as well?
Aftermarket universal coolant is green.
Super informational! Thank you
I was told by someone, don't remember who, hood ground strap helped with RFI shielding, this true or not? 🤔🧐👨🔧🤷♂️
Bought my 2008 brand new so far the 4.3 has been solid nothing major has gone wrong with the truck but it is very low milage so we will see.
does it have AFM?
08 176,000 4.8 running strong rust bed wells rockers just replaced front tie rods
