This Chevy TRANSMISSION Swap Was The Same Price As THE TRUCK

- I bought a 2010 Chevy Silverado that runs and drives for $2,800. The replacement transmission was $2,500 with a $1,000 core so $3,500 out the door!! It might have cost quite a bit but the replacement was an easy job that just takes a bit of time. We're going to pull the old transmission that barely made it a year out and put in the new PowerTorque unit I picked up at O'Reillys.

Tyler, you're not really one to talk.

Car Ninja's making 150K/yr. fixing $hitbox BMW's. No time for Chevys.
You may go to far on these cars from a profitability standpoint but you fix them correctly and people are getting good cars from you. You're building a reputation worth having and your honesty is what's building your RUclips channel up so big. Keep doing what you're doing. It's working.
The one time you actually find out the "I replaced the trans and converter last year" is actually true. Thats rarely the case.
Either it never happened, or they replaced it with a junkyard one with more mileage than the rest of the car lol
Hoovie's Cayenne in the background. He is actually putting money in that hooptie, wow. And that's probably also his SLS.
I have a feeling the Cayenne will be going up for sale on Cars and Bids once it’s done
@Build-A- Ride IF the engine is the only big thing. Porsches ain't cheap to fix. Must be nice getting all your parts for free. And even if he just breaks even, he makes money on the videos so win-win. You or I would struggle to make a profit.
@Build-A- Ride In addition to the motor he will have to redo the interior and those first gen Cayennes love to kill their driveshafts (or cardan shaft as Porsche likes to refer to it as) so I'm sure it'll need a new one of those too. Wonder if things like the AC, stereo and various accessories work on it.
Build-A- Ride is it bad that I check Cars and Bids as if it were a social media site?
I appreciate customers that put the plugs back in cores to be returned. Thank you for showing that and your parts person may not say or notice it at the time of return. I promise you that whoever is handling it does appreciate it. The reason being is that if there is fluid in there, it can go everywhere.
I have swapped a few transmissions in my life. I learned from one swap to install two front main seals by driving one in on top of the other. It works every time! I don't like doing the same job twice in one day, so now I always install two new seals every time before I bolt on a transmission.
What if someone already did and you’re installing a 3rd? Would it fit or just fall inside the block?
Really enjoying this series, love all the information I gain from your videos. Thank you!
Glad I stayed up late tonight for the latest installment in this flip! I enjoy the channel and your content.
I love that you fix everything wrong with these vehicles, but its no longer a flip. It more of a refurbish that you could sell as a certified used truck. Lol
I really go way to far on these cars... more of projects than flips 🍻
WatchJRGo nothing wrong with doing something correctly.
Well since he is doing the right repairs hopefully he ask the right price when selling it to make his money back and some profit.
great content on this rebuild tho
@@WatchJRGo true. But its nice to see regular vehicles being sorted out and sold to people who need them. I love it. Too many people pressure wash the engine bay and call it sorted
*7:38** That's one badass trans jack, looks like it costs a small fortune. I'm replacing the trans on my 08 denali right now on the floor in my garage and it's much more difficult without a lift and trans jack.*
Johnny is the MVP for always letting you come destroy (temporarily) his always immaculate shop. He is a true friend. Plus, im sure he's seeing the surge in business because of you and Tyler.
Especially Tyler. Lawd! 🤣🤣
scottcol23 I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s renting out the hoist on an hourly basis to jr. it’s about the only way a shop would let a hoist be used by someone else.
@@mj_aussie_coaster_travels8310 Its always after hours, and its always randomly when Tyler hoover is working on a car too. So he may charge him. But my guess is no, but who am I to know.
@@mj_aussie_coaster_travels8310 or its after hours and it brings business- If I was in the area and had a german car id bring it to Johnny's shop for sure because of youtube
No clue. But when you see what Johnny is about you’d want to take your car to him. I think it’s good pr.
If you are installing a rebuilt or reman trans, you should have the cooler flushed at a transmission shop that had a heated solvent air over hydraulic flush machine, designed to clean coolers, or just replace the radiator(if the trans cooler is inside of it). Cooler flush in a can dosen't work well when the previous trans had planet, bearing ,bushing or sprag failure where lots of metal debris is created. And the 6L80/90 are known in the industry as converter dumping, metal making machines.
Nah
We used the trans flush cleaner at the trans shop in Grandview, MO as well. After the flush, we blew the system clear with compressed air also.
At this point, you've put in so much work that I want to buy this truck.
I still wouldn’t want a shitbox

John, I completely agree with you. I am a true car guy and do not find comfort in getting the cheapest and sending it down the road. I want that truck to give someone years of enjoyment...not problems. That is what makes me happy.
The love of money is the root of all evil. The love of cars(and trucks) is happiness!
Rock on John!!!
Everyone always forgets about the rear main seal, might as well change it too. Also I would’ve add fluid to the new torque converter.
Yess bro, cuz then you have to bring the transmission down and do it all over again😂🤌
I'm amazed at what you know about vehicles, love your videos.

Tyler to John: "You've turned into me."
I effs with both of y'all. 👍🏿
That thing is clean underneath probably one of the cleanest used trucks I've seen.
love the dirt on the exhaust, looks just like my vehicles.
The last time I pulled a transmission was to replace my flywheel (automatic). The gears were so bad, I couldn't crank it up. It was on an old dirt parking lot in a small town, and that thing was sitting on my chest while I rolled it off to the ground! Then I had to reverse the move and get it back on my chest while I pushed it back up in place!! 1968 Chevy Truck. It was around 1988 I think.
They always put An insane core charge on these transmissions because they want you to give them your old trans so they can rebuild it. Its a great business strategy. You essentially never run out of inventory, and if you do. You made $1000 off the core.
I worked a brake shop in the 80's. We saved all the used pads and tossed the in a barrel that would get picked up weekly by a company that sold relined brake pads. The steel backing is the core. They just clean and repaint them and bond or rivet new pad material to them.
Its also logical. When I was a kid Imhad to take the empty cola, beer and fanta bottles back to the store, where I could hsve a small fee returned or trade in for new sodas. That model is still in use at the bars and pubs but that dissapear at home level with recyclabe glass in the early 90s. Some many car parts can be refurbished to a “new” state. Alternators are a nice example, the rewind the copper, the bearings and the diode. Case, shaft, pulley and conmutatores are checked and then, reused. It will save you a lot of money, plus the energy and chemicals involved y recycling the whole alternator is avoided altogether...
Gear Jammer exactly in my state of NY you pay 5 cents for every can/bottle/ or plastic bottle with a few exemptions. And you get your 5 cents back when you turn them in
@Bailey Hatfield No it isn't better. A lot of backings aren't made anymore for the older vehicles and this way brakes stay available for them.
Scott, you can't say JR made $1000 on the core. They charge him that $1000 when he pays for the transmission, so he just gets his own money back.
Good video as it moved on quickly thank you.
I've done these on the ground, because that was my only option, but if you get a lot of blocks and block it off the ground as high as you can safely, it's not to bad. I had a sawmill and cut a butt load of blocks to get them a solid 5 foot of room at least
Need to program the TCM to update it to your truck. Don’t ever skip that step.
I was waiting on that
How do you do that
Will that cause hard shifting?
You must be the best one arm mechanic around.
On gm vehicles you usually check the transmission fluid with the transmission in park not neutral.
Bobby Taylor I believe it usually has the instructions on the dipstick itself for gm. Park, warm, idle, or whatever it takes for your vehicle
Reverse to Drive a few times after adding fluid, then check level on GM cars and trucks when in park.
Nice when trans was pulled recently. Makes job a lot easier
"quick little 5 hour job" love it!
I hope you can find a good set of used tires minimum. When I see bald tires, I just assume the previous owner didn't have the money to do regular maintenance. It's usually not a good sign.
I use this when I look at cars too. The amount of tread, and what kind of tire. If they had jinyu tires on it, they probably wanted minimum cost to keep the car running
Yeah, and mismatched tires are annoying AF.
Chevy's are great ! Proud owner 2020 Silverado RST !
Dam. You made that look easy. Those lifts sure help.
The lift and trans jack beats laying on your back in the driveway and lifting it off your chest.
It used to be a fun game to drink for every Hoovie car you saw at The Wizard's shop. Now you can do the same drinking game at The Car Ninja's. 2 shots comin up!
These type of trucks go for 8-12k in my area depending on Year and condition. Most of the Trucks I looked at had 200k+ and were 8k. I finally gave up an took my chances on a slightly wrecked one..
Yup, same market everywhere, truck market is insane right now! 💯
Ok, I know this is going to sound crazy :) I have had 2 cars for about 35 years. One has been a sedan and one has been a van and then to min vans. I can fit plywood, drywall, washer, dryer and more (not all at the same time) :) I can pull my 18 foot boat with the mini-van too. Room for people too. MUCH less cost then a truck and I have never had to do any major repair work on any the vans. Just normal maintenance work. They get up to about 150,00 miles before I replace the van and that usually about 15 years of driving.
@@trvman1 very smart I never considered. I could probably mow right out of a van. Then haul trailer if I need another mower.
Hoovie: You're turning into me
JR: except that I actually do my own work... 😉
Really good replacement there dude
JR I bought a 4L60e from them as well and so far the Trans has been super now I bought it from them because they redo the whole Trans not like most Trans shops that just replace the broken part or parts.
I did the same job with 4 jack stand and a floor jack. Waller-ed it out with my knees and hands, let it land on my chest/hips and rolled it over on the floor. After that I went out and bought a trans jack. Sad, but usually the way I do things.
So cool that Jonny let you use the shop and stay so late to git 'r dun - and that he even lent a hand on a Chevy haha
Should have made a video of you rebuilding the trans. They are surprisingly easy to disassemble and rebuild.
Thing I like about jr is he’s a nice dude Not a fake RUclipsr like so many car channels on RUclips
Johnny is going to have to have you do transmission install in the future while he is doing a Engine rebuild
Excellent works 👍
Bro I’m havin problems with my 13 5.3 pos Chevy and I think this vid actually really help me get a good idea on what I’m about to do hopeful I don’t fuck it up if I do it myself but then I have to do it on the ground😭😭
Nice job John Ross, don't you just love a good transmission jacks. I really hope that you got a good transmission??? I don't think O'Reilly's would screw up do you??? Hope not. Thanks for sharing the video. Stay safe stay well and as always and God bless.
I been waiting for this. I still wonder if we will just never see the R8.
That’s no fun having a lift, transmission jack and proper tools. I took a C4 out of a 65 Mustang on the driveway with an old floor jack and enough tools to repair a lawnmower. Took it out, overhauled it, replaced some parts and it worked. Spent about $50 and two weeks time after work. That was before RUclips.
You need to make a playlist for this truck!
Who else just watched the previous video and thought damn ima have to wait a week for the next ;)
I'm always amused at how neat and clean Johnny is...
Just a quick question, when you put a new trans in, a lot of times they suggest you prefill the trans before starting it it. I don't suppose you checked that?

YES!! Was waiting on this
Damn bro...u do everything...wow...good job...👍👍👍👍
Awesome build. Should be a quick flip
I do my top bolt from the top with a ratchet wrench and the other top ones with long extensions and 1 swivel from all the way back but also always on the ground because I'm poor

I have to replace rear main seal on a O5 Tahoe I’ve owned for years a Z71 fully loaded and still pristine . But I’ve been putting it off brim working on the ground by myself. Something that in my 20s was a lot easier. Now closer to 50 I’ve been putting it off but will get it done
Hoovie rlly sees John as a rival, I like the rivalry clash
While we’re here, anyone got advice, prior knowledge on 6l80s? Working on an 09 Tahoe ltz no reverse goes forward in neutral and reverse and when you cut it off and back on it jerks forward about a foot. Doesn’t shift out of 1st gear and the “manual” shifting doesn’t work either, already tried resetting the trans changed fluid and filter. Any help would be appreciated

Excellent question, Ninja XD
Can you make a video about putting a car up for sale? the process of it beginning to sale? that would be so great !!
Right before I go to bed nice
Nice work👍
I have a cls550 just like the one behind you guys but mine is mettalic black with a dark red burgundy wine leather interior. ..
A piece of suggestive advise. After finger tightening trans to engine bolts, I learned to use a 3/8th drine air impact to do final tighteng of the bolts. It was faster as well as sufficient. You could theoretically tighten them to torque specs, but with the extensions and swivel(s) it would not be accurate anyway.
if its just the converter that is broken when replace the entire trans??
Cool truck. Hopefully you make some dough on it when sell and is a lot of work and money put into it.
Back in June I picked up an almost mint condition (with 300k miles) 04 Tahoe with the flex fuel 5.3 and it runs great but the mileage blows (I rebuilt the heads, installed a 615-183x intake, long tube headers, and tuned w-HP Tuners). I went from an average of 14 mpg to 15.5. With the performance stuff I’ve done and what I plan on doing I want a transmission that will A. Live & B. Give me a wider range of gears. So I’m looking into putting in a 6l80e out of a later truck and physically it’ll fit ( with some tweakage of the mount and cross member) but what I’ve found out is that the controller is inside the trans, so anyone out there who knows if these transmissions can be swapped and controlled into earlier vehicles please hit me up
*You made that look easier than changing oil lol*

you said you are ready to drop the cross member ,, but you have a screw jack under the trans so how would you get the transmission jack under the pan ? i assume you relized that and removed the screw jack and put the trans jack under it. also i normally disconnect everything except the bell houseing bolts so that you put the jack under remove cross member remove bell houseing bolts and it comes out also clearing the cooler and lines is easier once the trans is out

Many salutations! Very nice transmission interchange you executed; I am glad that it succeeded. I do think that there should have been an aluminum flywheel, a slightly smaller torque converter, and a brand-new exhaust pipe network added along with a new rear main seal while the power train was dissected that way. Why, John Ross? Why did you not think to do all that?
