Love my 6L80, if I were to build a 500+ HP motor, I would go 6L90 and not a 4-speed. While the 4L80 is more durable, the gearing cannot compete. LTs math was a little off too, the 6L80 with 3.42s is a 13.77:1 1st gear ratio. 1st in a 6L80 is 4.03 or 4.027. Still enjoy the show and watching those youngsters do the work I did when I was there age!
😁 I work at a transmission shop I have pulled so many 60s and 80s smh I just pulled one yesterday I've done so many of them I actually timed myself, 40 minutes to get a 4L80 out 👏 for me lol but my boss don't get that kind of speed everyday so its about an hour in a half pull. Don't get me wrong I like GM I'm a GM guy I'm a psycho working on them, I hate electrical problems... but we work on anything and everything me and the guy I work with we both Hammer jobs out the door!! Awesome conversion kit keep up with the vids👍👍
Forgot to show the trans controller install and integration into the factory computer system. Plus, the contact pattern on the ring gear was not centered....Flat rate tech mentality and just send it.
@@markiwi956 I am not a GM guy but I believe the 6l80E is a derivative of a German ZF transmission (which I have no idea what ZF stands for)... if that is the case that transmission is used behind pretty much every V8 in the modern world from the Hyundai Genesis to BMW 7 Series to Dodges and Chryslers I think even the hellcat uses it to Ford work trucks, there is a ton of aftermarket support for the ZF... Just a pricey trans to do stuff to but fuel mileage increases are pretty big (look at a 04 navigator to a 06 for a great example for an increase)
@@AtomicReverend ...no. the 6l is junk. You are thinking of ford 6r series. 60, 80 and 100. It is bulletproof. 6r80 1000 hp stock is not a problem. It has the gear train licensed from zf. Like the 6hp26. Lot of gm vehicles getting swapped to the ford 6r80. 6l80 is related to the zf but just not as good.
I've built and modded 4l80s in things like my previous gmt800 5.3 Yukon. My current 6.2 6l80 is just fine. A good rebuild and tune and a 6l80 can hold plenty. Perhaps not as much as the 4l80, but I like the extra gears.
6L80 to 4L80 for me is going to back, i bulid street cars around 800 to 1000 hp with the 6L80 and all is work fine, but the tune its something very important
I’d consider this a downgrade. In a pickup truck you gotta make some huge power for a 4 speed to make more sense than a 6 speed. Some really strong 6L80s on the road these days. 4L80 isn’t too special either until it’s built.
I think you missed most of the video because they spoke about everything you did and more. Watch the video again, you'll definatly learn something if you pay close attention.
This was a major down grade I'd take a 6l80e 6spd over the old out dated old technology 4l80e 4spd. If they were selling it and I was in the market for this truck and say I went and looked at it and seen they did this swap I'd tell the guy congratulations your a idiot and I'd walk away. This is a major down grade and it will hurt the resale value!!! I now consider this truck to be a hack job pile of shit!
It's true, a 6 speed to a 4 will lead to so much taller gearing, even with a low rear end. Stupid... 4L80 is a POS too... Blew up on my 3/4 ton Suburban w 105k and synthetic in all holes changed every 30k tops. Very little towing.
@@smokesgtp That's right these 6l80e 6spd are way better Ive had over 13 000lbs of trailer on with them and no issues I've own many and I liked them very stout if they were so bad then why does gm out the 420+ hp 6.2 infront of it. There's no way this little pos white Silverado's whimpy 5.3 is putting out that power. Major down grade what next ls 5.3 to a shity carbed small block like really this swap really pieces me off
Hmmmm. Going to an older platform because it works. 4x4s using powerglides, detecting a theme here. auto engineers listen. Make a platform that works, will hold up, end user serviceable, and can welcome aftermarket support you will have a loyal following and sales will be great. Focus on this instead of a sensor letting me know how far my beverage is seated in the cup holder.
Keep in mind 4L80 was never a half ton transmission. So this isn’t a return to the past in that sense. 6L80/6L90 is a better trans for a pickup truck IMO. Now days there are plenty of build up options for them. I am also pretty sure the early 6L80 was the weaker one. They’ve been known to be quite strong in later years. 6L90 is technically the successor to the 4L80/85 as both were for HD applications.
You want all that in a modern car? Buy a premium car then, not a Chevy. Take an Audi, Lexus or Mercedes SUV apart after only 150k miles, and you won't see the gears stripped off. In fact, you won't see that after 500k. Getting a modern SUV or truck with a big engine and lots of power for a TINY amount of money is bound to get you some mechanical issues, because nothing on that vehicle is over-engineered, it's all "that will do" to keep the costs down.
@@derbigpr500 Really, a Toyota, VW, or a Benz? Mercedes have not been overbuilt since the 126 body, everything after that is disposable. Toyota's and VW's have always been junk!
Sure complicated that crossmember fix. Could have welded a perch to the rear of that crossmember a lot easier and it would have looked a lot better. Bring back Stacy as the new guys are not as good.
For the cost and hassle of re-gearing, going from a 3.43 to a 3.73 isn't a big jump. And the G80s have a bad rep, but only the ones on the smaller axles have the issue with breaking. The 3/4 ton and up axles are pretty stout.
Hi guys I was thinking of doing this to my 2003 Yukon xl SLT 5.3l 2wd but I'd like to know how much would a set up like the one you installed coast me? everything you did from transmission to differential.

1:30 if you had chance the transmission filter. The rear planet would have gotten adequate lubrication. You made the truck slower with the 4L80. 4:30 it doesn’t take a very long time for the pump to fill the torque converter with fluid. Where do actors get this bs from? 12:00 Installing 3.73 gears will not make up for the tall 2.48 first gear and it hurts mpg even more because the 4L80 .75 overdrive.
I'm still not sure why they only went to a 3.73. It's not a big upgrade over the stock gears. They spent a lot of time and money to correct for the deficiencies of a 4 speed when they could have just sunk the money in building and tuning the 6 speed.
You need to post the link to the swap harness in your video description. If you have a 2009-2012 Silverado 4L60E it will not have an external PNP switch and will require you to not only buy the switch for a 4L60E, but also the dedicated harness which will run you around $350. Would have been great to have known this ahead of time. I could backhand a few people right about now. 😡
So I’m so confused as to what my truck has, i have a 13 Silverado 1500 crew cab LTZ Z71 4x4 with the 5.3 vortec. The fluid in my transmission is burnt. I literally don’t have the funds, what are my options? Do i rebuild? Do i get a junkyard? Please help

Man I love that these episodes are posting now! This particular one hurts:/ 6L90 would’ve been my upgrade choice. The 4 speeds are just awful to daily around. Slow slushy unresponsive. The 6 speeds are too but they’re a little better for whatever reason.
Did y'all have to adjust the linkage at all or change any brackets out for the linkage? When I did my 4L60E to 4L80E swap I have every gear except first and it almost feels like it'll go into 1st so I'm guessing there should be enough adjustment in the cable for it to work.
How do I get a better transmission I have a 4l60e.its gone out on me once n i feel like I burnt out 3-4 it sat for awhile 6-7 months so could it just not have kept the fluid in it.. should I change out the transmission filter n do a flush. That's a monster paperweight right there lol I ordered a monster, then had pump issues. Tore it down to replace it... it was an ebay pump. Only reason I know is because it had the same Chinese symbol logo that came on an ebay pump I bought for a 4l60 before. That Trans was already bad and in my junk pile so I confirmed to make sure... yep ebay parts on a high dollar trans.. monster is junk
LOL it does seem they went backwards on this. 6L80s are stout. You'd be better off putting some money into that-or going with a 6L90-rather than losing the performance advantage of two extra gears and having to navigate the computer control issues. And then they went from a 1 piece to 2 piece driveshaft-for a performance truck that's going to limit your top speed.

I guess they've never heard of a 6l90. Lol not only that, I have 2 friends with C6s making 900rwhp on a stock 6l80. All in the tuning
Also about weight. And a C6 weights a lot less than this truck
You know it’s 2019 right? Many 1000+ whp 6l80’s running and not breaking. The 4L is old news.
what upgrades can be done to a 6l80?
Buddy in the black shirt didn’t blink once
He's a robot
I do like the 60L..they use the gear shaft with a 1:5 ratio which puts perfect pressure on the gear locks. The 2:5 bell bearings do a great job too
My built 6l90 is good for 1500 horse power. With a FTI converter. The key is engine and trans tune must work together
Major down grade what next ls 5.3 to a shity carbed small block like really this swap really pieces me off
@@taylorh3930 it is a weird swap to put it lightly. I don't get it. Not to mention the highway fuel mileage will go from terrible to worse.
great video powernation,,,,,,, BUT THEN YOU SAID MONSTER TRANS
Would it have killed you to put in a built 6L80?
I love my 6l80 after it was tuned of course
Monster transmission 😂
Also draining the transmission fluid makes it lighter to move around

Probably. And these days people have figured out how to build and tune 6l80/6l90s for big power.
Sure complicated that crossmember fix. Could have welded a perch to the rear of that crossmember a lot easier and it would have looked a lot better.
Bring back Stacy as the new guys are not as good.

True true.
Relying on just it welded together is a very bad idea.
Add you didnt see that small crack in the housing when putting the pinion. look at time 19:41 in video.
Why didn't you go with the Allison LT1000 trans? Much more robust than an outdated 4L80. Just my opinion.
For the cost and hassle of re-gearing, going from a 3.43 to a 3.73 isn't a big jump. And the G80s have a bad rep, but only the ones on the smaller axles have the issue with breaking. The 3/4 ton and up axles are pretty stout.
15:18 - Diff housing is cracked tho..

the problem is the the TCU unit is inside the trans case on the 6l80 and relies on signals from the ECU can bus not compatable with older (4 speed) ECUs. They start getting sketchy at about 500-550 hp seems to be the consensus.

What an upgrade! I'd make this truck even better with a two speed non lockup Powerglide and a carburated big block. It would eat all the gas you want!
It's a good thing they were not "upgrading" a '70's pick up truck, they would have used a cast iron powerglide from a 1957 Chevrolet car.
