Definitely don't even think about and just do it! I didn't even plan on ever making youtube videos when I started uploading gaming stuff to my channel ... It started out with streaming on here because I just liked to capture the memories in game with my friends and have them back to look on one day

Some really sound advice here. We are currently on that 'Click that upload button' stage and have enjoyed and learnt so much from every upload, we even have a fan! Incorporating RUclips/Twitch is a little daunting but as you say hesitation can become a huge barrier to taking your first step. The psychology behind video titles was really interesting. I hope people can take these ideas and really build communities and reach their goals!
I’ve started trying to get more in to RUclips and making videos. I was thinking about streaming, and honestly the lighting and audio tips help so much. Hearing all these tips makes me feel like I can actually do it. Thank you so much!
10:10 Hes so right guys. You just have to start. My first videos were so bad but i just kept going and trying new things and now I'm only kinda bad. To be honest only a couple people ever really see your first videos so dont be afraid to just go for it. "How To" video will naturally get a little more views but as long as youre quick to the point and you speak clearly youll do good in that.
I think he said it’s easier because the algorithm is better. Otherwise the same applies because if you have even a small audience on a different platform or encourage friends and family you can bring them to your RUclips stream and it would grow like that too.
I've been streaming on RUclips for a little while and I have been back and forth on Twitch and RUclips. Personally for monetization Twitch is better but for discoverability, RUclips is the way to go if you're wanting to grow your audience.
After 8 months of trying to figure out how to present my idea for a youtube video. I have no video yet. I have just seen this video. You have not changed my mind in the least in what I needed to do, I had just figured it out. What I believed was possibly possible you have made abundantly clear that it is- absolutely possible. Your formula of progression (10:15) is exactly what I painfully came to believe would work. We are traveling similar paths. You first, me soon. I know it will work. I will check back near the end of the year to let you know how it worked out. Thank you for the gift.
Thank you! I really struggle with the hesitation. I have 90ish videos up and still struggle with the hesitation. A wonderful combination of anxiety and imposter syndrome. But I watch your videos and try to get better little by little. So thank you!
I've been following Harris for well over a year now, and he is one of my main inspirations to turn around my channel and take it to the next level. Thank you.
I am not a streamer, but this video is great for regular RUclipsrs as well! Very inspiring to keep being consistent and pivoting! And I'll be sending it to my partner, who is starting to stream and needs to start his RUclips channel x)
Bro I'm new at the whole content creator scene but I love the positive outlook and no BS you talk about in your vids. Very informal. Even if these are a few yrs old. I appreciate the posts and hope to apply them being a 40yr old that has a ton of time on his hands when I'm not taking care of my son. Glad there are a few of you honest guys out there. Thanks again.
I tried to get in touch with you on twitter last week as i'd love to ask you advice directly some time about growing my twitch (it's unique situation) - I think you were going through a rough time though, so I apologise I tried to get in touch with you you at a bad time and hope you're feeling better (i know "on video" isn't the same as how you're actually feeling). I know you're incredibly busy and i have no problem discussing a consultation fee. My discord is Volgun#0049
I think the hesitation point is the one that hits home the most, I've thought about starting a channel in the past many times to just get involved within the communities I enjoy and meet new individuals yet I've always put it off due to hesitation. The fear of failing, the comparisons of quality and just all the negative headspace that intrudes your thoughts telling you why you aren't good enough. But then I just go onto random channels and I go to their oldest video, you begin to realize at one point everybody had the same fleeting sentiments and doubt. Rome wasn't built in a day and neither is learning a new skill such as editing and applying that skill into different facets. Yet you won't get anywhere with it until you just do it and taking it day by day as you slowly but surely improve your quality, your knowledge on editing, your personality and presence whether it be on camera or just through a microphone.
There's this creator named struthless that I think has the perfect piece of advice here. He's an artist, but I think this applies to anything creative, including videos: "Draw the same thing every single day." What this means is pick a topic, even if it doesn't feel perfect, and just make stuff consistently in that vein. Add bricks to ONE house for a year and you'll see your progress. What happened in his case is he got really bored of drawing ibises (his chosen topic) but he stayed committed, and figured out a spin he could put on his topic to make the process more interesting. Let's say you started making videos about The Legend of Zelda every single week. But eventually you got really bored of doing just Zelda gameplays. So one day you decide to make a video about "what if [Game X] had Zelda logic?" and you like the way that feels. So then you start making videos applying Zelda logic to other games. Random example but I think it makes the point.
Fully agree. Great video as always Harris and it’s so true! My first few months on my gaming channel was just experimenting. Now I love making gaming cinematics. You never know until you truly commit and let go of that fear
"don't hesitate" so true. i started posting on yt in like 2012, making really REALLY bad cringey weeb content. I amassed about 20k subs within 6 months, as i was consistantly posting. the stuff i was posting wasn't the best it could have been. but it was out there- so people could see it. then the amount of subs i had got to my brain- i started posting less and less because i was worried about making really quality content as opposed to content i found fun to make. i went from posting 4-5 times a month to 2-3 times a year. i lost pretty much 100% of my audience because i started hesitating SO much. i constantly make the joke that i'm always working on youtube- for every video i post, there's 10 that i filmed and edited and didn't put up because i hesitated on their quality. i wish your advice was around when i was 15 making youtube videos in my bedroom. lol
Sean Cannel from Think Media always says punch fear in the face. As someone who should and could have started streaming and making RUclips content years ago, but was too self conscious, I feel this. You can do it! Just crank that content out.
during lockdown i have been considering doing some streaming and content release but havent found the confidence to add my face to a web cam am an older guy that likes gaming but watching harris and his content tips and trick gave me the push to release my first video with my pro clubs team to test how it would do done this yestarday and would like to personally thank him knowing i will grow in confidence so thank you soo much harris mate i will continue to watch and learn
That hesitation bit hit real hard, I obsessed so much over my setup and quality I never thought anything was good enough, then I went live, edited a highlight reel and slammed a thumbnail on and the relief was epic
I've worked on Film and Television for 10 years and I still got something out of this Video. Thanks Harris you're a God using men. @Alpha Gaming. I absolutely love your videos about twitch and RUclips. Backstory: I started streaming about a year ago. After a month I actually had 15 people watching me regularly when I did stream. I had the full intention of making you tube videos. I needed to take time off, and I decided this time before I go back I would start making RUclips videos too. Your channel convinced me to get my gaming RUclips channel up and running first before I start going live on twitch. I can’t dedicate a lot of time streaming yet anyways so I’m focused on getting it all set up. Getting logos, overlays, intros for my RUclips, I’m recording the gaming stuff and preparing for when I have time to become more dedicated. So yeah. Back your video. I would like to comment on your discussion about B-roll footage. I agree, but honestly I am in this huge learning phase. I listen to video upon video on tips, tricks etc while I’m at work. So I can’t always watch the screen. What engages me is people like you who can explain in such great detail what you’re talking about I can feel engaged, and I can visualize what you’re saying. The only thing I partially disagree with is the idea of “don’t worry about what you have just record and put it up”. I have to disagree kind of. I did that with my vlogging channel and was extremely unhappy. So unhappy I haven’t vlogged in two years. It made me realize I was lacking elements. Now that doesn’t mean don’t record. I would say record record and record. I think it’s best to have a list or a “checklist” of required standards your videos should have. If it meets those standards put it up. You will get better as you go I agree. However, I think you should have a standard first. This way when you release a video you know you’re going to be happy with it.
Yeah, I actually laughed at this couple of frames since he just says that an iPhone will do. The audio is alright, the lighting is okay and then this. Imagine watching a video full of these glitches. Also, how did that even slip through post-production?
Dude, you're my hero right now. I'm slowly trying to build my youtube and twitch channel for the last few months outside of work. Gonna push extra hard now!
I'm not sick of you saying it. Facts are facts. What bugs me is I spend sooo much time and feel like my production is never solid enough....hesitation i'm sure. The thing that complicates it for me is how to write, record/breakdown, and PROPERLY edit/present my VIDEO GAME information. I prefer to do tutorial videos and it feels it takes so much time, effort, and trial and error just to get out a simple video....and then that video is 20-30 minutes minimum. Which isn't the "suggested length". So many rules to adhere to and I feel lost. Thanks for this. I definitely picked up some tips and am rewatching endlessly just as motivation as a prep a stream game I created for my game. Kudos m8
This was actually the first REAL helpful video I’ve seen so far overall with the examples to hearing “audio and lighting” is more important never actually understood that 🤷♂️ thank you!
This is all great advice. My first 10 videos were shot on my phone. Money was invested into a solid mic and cheap $40 key lights. Still have not perfected the lighting and audio filters, but it improves with every video. I still don’t have my own camera, I finally borrowed a friends DSLR just until I can afford my own. Thanks for another great discussion and video tips! Happy content creating!
You know what, Harris? You're absolutely right. My issue isn't my camera, lightning, or even audio. This past year, I've gotten into streaming a lot more and see myself growing everyday, little by little, one new follower at a time. And of course I've heard you say I need RUclips (or some other content outside of Twitch) a bazillion times. It's a meme at this point lol. And I plan to do that. But you hit the nail on the head with the Hesitation point. That is 100% my problem. If my ideas aren't good enough, that's okay. I'm sure someone will enjoy it. I think we can all start somewhere.
‘don’t hesitate’ this is some of the best advice you can use. i used to think ‘this video is trash im not uploading it’ then now i just uploaded videos and the more i got used to it the easier and less stressful it got, i know i havent made many and only have 22 subs but i dont think that matters, its just about having fun in your content creation.
Excellent video. Your point on it takes a while to find your voice is something I have heard Stand Up Comics say. It takes years to develop your skills. But the clock does not start until you start.
I can't stress this enough, diversify your content to other places like Instagram and TikTok! I'm a very small channel and I've gained over 80 new RUclips and Twitch subs in 4 days because I finally decided to do that. This man is preaching.
First time viewer and wow, i can't believe I didn't discover your channel sooner! Video was packed full of value and I appreciate how well spoken you were! Subbed with no hesitation
I gag when I watch my own videos but I'm going for it with your advice, It's been a dream forever and I'm proud to say I thought about RUclips along with Twitch before I started watching you. Your advice is amazing and I'll be here for the long run, Thanks!
I really enjoyed this style of video Harris! Yeah I definitely agree that audio is the most important and it's also one of the hardest things to get right being new. Thank you for the tips. I would love to see more styles of video like this.
The music that you produce is so amazing! I really enjoy the lofi soundtrack and plan on using them in my videos that I will be creating so thank you in advance!
I know I’m going to make a yt channel when I move out and get enough money, but I’m filled with this doubt that it’s not a good idea, and it’s not gonna go anywhere, and this channel helps. Thanks
This video is the best video on this subject! So many others have fluffed their way through the same thing but this one hit the hardest. Nice one, mate!
Dude. Thank you so much for this. I am trying to help my daughter realize her dreams and this is a huge help for me. I will be showing her the video too for your last couple tips.
I just watched Sams's video. As i said in his comments, the quality of your videos is some of the best around by far. He is definitely the wizard behind the curtain, but you're the face of it all! It's very overwhelming thinking about doing all of this. I only started my channel 2 weeks ago because my 8yr autistic son wants to be a RUclipsr more than anything else. So I thought I would try first to lead by example as he doesn't take knock backs very well. So here I go... Plus it's an reason to relive my childhood and play games with a real excuse
these tips are so powerful. i was so surprised that your 2nd tip was about clickable titles!! many other youtube growth videos don't talk about it in depth enough! your detailed explanation is very valuable info, thank you!!
This is great man, thank you for doing this. You packed a ton of great info into a short amount of time but also presented it in a way that's easy to understand. Kudos to you!
at 3:26 you said "This channel as of right now while I film this has 348K subs" and now on April 2021 you have 556K subs.. your videos are so helpful, million thanks for every video you've made so far.
Maaan! I just found about you yesterday. And I can say, you illuminated me on what I was looking for! You already gained I suscriptor here and on Twitch. Thank you!
I'm so glad you've finally started to implement hesitation into your videos. I think as some talking best practices, I feel that that actually demoralizes many NOT to start when it's not accompanied with a "just start anyway" statement. You have to fail many times before you can succeed.
Hey I appreciate your advice. Its worth its weight in gold. I have taken all of the things that I've seen so far from the videos and have applied it in my personal journey. From my sponsorship pick ups which is 4 right now, to my video equipment, that I'm building on, all the way to lighting and software. You are helping people and it is working. You should do a segment where people have done a before and after of the advice they have taken from you and show where they are currently with the advice in motion. Thank you so much. I have subbed and have shared. Thanks again. Bizzy
This is true. I've been watching your videos for a long time now and you keep repeating you gotta make content on other platforms to grow on Twitch. And up to this day I haven't made a single edited and produced video for youtube. I've been postponing it so much whilst dealing with Uni (but still dedicating like 8 hours almost everyday to stream) it's insane. This video comes in at a good time for me, thanks for all the info!
i've been doing youtube videos and streams for a decent amount of time now and I have been watchin your videos on how to grow my channel for alot og my journey. I still come back often and watch alot of them over once i feel like I've gotten one thing down, i work on another. it helps me a lot. i thank you for all that you do helping people out with videos like this one.
I've been postponing making stuff for 10 years now cause of my bad self image. I think you do amazing work in helping people by just giving basic tips we don't really just get. I've finally started streaming after years of therapy (I am posting this on an old alt account) and will definitely start making highlights and other youtube videos once I get better equipment ( I dont have lights currently and my headset mic is just plain terrible) Thank you, you handsome man
What do you think the most useful tip out of these was? Are you going to try any of them?
Honestly I think your basically YODA - so all of em :D :D

Thank you so much senpai gaming, ur tips on making RUclips vids have really helped me
What are you thoughts on beginners streaming on RUclips? Would you recommend it? Why or why not?
I think he said it’s easier because the algorithm is better. Otherwise the same applies because if you have even a small audience on a different platform or encourage friends and family you can bring them to your RUclips stream and it would grow like that too.
I've been streaming on RUclips for a little while and I have been back and forth on Twitch and RUclips. Personally for monetization Twitch is better but for discoverability, RUclips is the way to go if you're wanting to grow your audience.
I'll tell you after a while lol.
Have it worked out?
Hey Harris. Your tips have helped me get to 6K subscribers in a few months. Thank you so much and stay well buddy!
Ah yes those tips, there's so many of them though, which ones?
Thank you! I really struggle with the hesitation. I have 90ish videos up and still struggle with the hesitation. A wonderful combination of anxiety and imposter syndrome. But I watch your videos and try to get better little by little. So thank you!
Haircut looks great
I've been following Harris for well over a year now, and he is one of my main inspirations to turn around my channel and take it to the next level.
Okay but why do you think he would reply
@@Kelalasdemonx no idea
@@Kelalasdemonx Because he's TheVolgun
i did not expect to see you down here...anyways you'll probs not read it, but your contents awesome and really got me into SCP

0:25 It would be funnier if with the voice line you'd have a dedicated clip with a transition xD
Fully agree. Great video as always Harris and it’s so true! My first few months on my gaming channel was just experimenting. Now I love making gaming cinematics. You never know until you truly commit and let go of that fear
I love how easy you make things for a novice like myself. Cheers man keep up the amazing work 👍🏻💯
Great advice! Sometimes I get afraid to upload a video because I believe is not good enough but I will definitely change that 🖤
"don't hesitate" so true. i started posting on yt in like 2012, making really REALLY bad cringey weeb content.
"Smash that like button if you're hesitating RIGHT NOW instead of making a video. Yeah, that's what I thought." 🤣
That hesitation bit hit real hard, I obsessed so much over my setup and quality I never thought anything was good enough, then I went live, edited a highlight reel and slammed a thumbnail on and the relief was epic
The hardest thing for a smaal creator is waking up in the morning and see that nothing has changed😏😜
Fax
Yes
Just waking up in general
I've worked on Film and Television for 10 years and I still got something out of this Video. Thanks Harris you're a God using men. I've tried streaming, RUclips videos, podcasts etc over the years haven't found something that sticks yet. I'm looking to start a new channel here on my playing PS games for the first time as I just bought my first Playstation last week.
hey Harris! recommended cameras for guitar/bass/piano video recordings? need to step up my video quality :((
main problem is when I play fast passages or when I want to zoom in. Sometimes it seems like I'm in playback mode lol (currently using my phone as my camera)
thanks!!
I just rebuilt a system from ground zero. I had idea on how to set up my A/V and those ideas were completely blown out of the water by your tips and equipment suggestions. THANK YOU for making me start off solid.
Harris, why did you decide to shoot this video in this ratio & fps?
The ratio is the cinema type ratio. Not sure why the fps
probably 30 fps :)
You're commenting, aren't you?
It’s definitely Hesitation for me fam! And I’m glad you said it takes “dozens of ideas before you get an idea of what to make!” Thanks man! 💯💯💯
Michael Reeves is the best case of taking a large audience from a more discoverable platform to grow a streaming channel
This is probably the best video I have watched on how to get started on youtube, I dont watch anything gaming related and I just discovered your channel but damn so much good stuff in a 12 min video! Thank you buddy! Subbed!
Why would Elgato give you a sponsor because they are ALWAYS OUT OF STOCK. I been waiting for the time to get THAT MICROPHONE BUT IT IS NEVER AVAILABLE!!!
Get a decent dynamic xlr mic + external sound card for same amount of money.
You can thanks me later.
EVERYTHING audio is put of stock dude... I was waiting on a cheaper USB audio interface but had to just say screw it and got the Focusrite and I don't really regret it.
9:06 as you can see ladies and gentlemen we got a glitch.
Yeah, I actually laughed at this couple of frames since he just says that an iPhone will do. The audio is alright, the lighting is okay and then this. Imagine watching a video full of these glitches. Also, how did that even slip through post-production?
GamingIndominus how
GamingIndominus ok
Looked like zombie Harris lol
@GamingIndominus Well, I don't see why not :)
That's awesome! I love your teachings and your videos! So helpful!!
I was about to leave but then my attention span got called out so ... yeah... here we are.
Dude, you're my hero right now. I'm slowly trying to build my youtube and twitch channel for the last few months outside of work. Gonna push extra hard now!
I would totally get a Elgato mic but they’ve been sold out for two weeks
@GamingIndominus I'm listening
Kudos m8
“Your wallet will thank you, and so will your audience” -AlphaGaming 🤣🤣👌🏽
This was actually the first REAL helpful video I’ve seen so far overall with the examples to hearing “audio and lighting” is more important never actually understood that 🤷♂️ thank you!
‘No one goes viral on their first video’
*dream has entered the chat*
Man you hit the nail on the hammer about audio. Totally wouldn't have guessed it. That's something I gotta work on.
Just started this month with not much traction - that being said, ill stick to it and keep watching your vids for these amazing bits of advice !
Keep going, I've been making content for a year and now it is getting traction. Take your time ❤️
‘don’t hesitate’ this is some of the best advice you can use. i used to think ‘this video is trash im not uploading it’ then now i just uploaded videos and the more i got used to it the easier and less stressful it got, i know i havent made many and only have 22 subs but i dont think that matters, its just about having fun in your content creation.
Hi. How's your channel (ts mystic) going?
Rally enjoying your videos, The B Roll idea is a brilliant thing I want to integrate into future videos. Thanks Harris
Wonderful tips. Thank you for sharing the raw footage of your beginnings... it really sparks a sense of hope and call to action.
I can truly say that you just motivated me even more to get started. Thank you.
yeah i need this too !
Man the quality of your vids: audio, light and image are great. Content is also different from other growth channels out there! Much appreciated!
I know I’m going to make a yt channel when I move out and get enough money, but I’m filled with this doubt that it’s not a good idea, and it’s not gonna go anywhere, and this channel helps. Thanks
My cat says, These vids should help!
This video is the best video on this subject! So many others have fluffed their way through the same thing but this one hit the hardest. Nice one, mate!
At last! The video I've been asking for! Thx Harris! Make more of these!
2nd video I’ve watched of yours. 2nd video I’ve watched till the end. Subscribed. I appreciate your value. Looking forward to watching more!
Your content is on point. I for one really appreciate your approach to content creation!!!
these tips are so powerful. i was so surprised that your 2nd tip was about clickable titles!! many other youtube growth videos don't talk about it in depth enough! your detailed explanation is very valuable info, thank you!!
Hi I love your Channel
This is great man, thank you for doing this. You packed a ton of great info into a short amount of time but also presented it in a way that's easy to understand. Kudos to you!
This video is great, thank you so much. I can definitely see the true value behind the audio at this point. Keep doing you brotha
Love the video and especially the last tip where you shared your journey ! Just what I needed ! Thanks 🙏
Dude i love your philosofy on sharing what have taken you sweat, tears and hard work to learn with us. For that thanks
at 3:26 you said "This channel as of right now while I film this has 348K subs" and now on April 2021 you have 556K subs.. your videos are so helpful, million thanks for every video you've made so far.
Honestly, Harris, I'm so glad you've said it so much. Makes me remember how important it is to build that audience. So, thank you.
Thanks for the information!! Best advice. Just start creating...
Bizzy
Your advice about using youtube to grow your twitch actually made me start my channel. Thank you so much
Thanks for this Harris and Sam. All these videos are super helpful
I love the last tip, it was such a comfort to have that put into words!
I've finally started streaming after years of therapy (I am posting this on an old alt account) and will definitely start making highlights and other youtube videos once I get better equipment ( I dont have lights currently and my headset mic is just plain terrible)
Thank you, you handsome man
