I have been anxiously watching videos with editing tips for beginners and the ''Done is better than perfect'' really called me out here. I needed that. A LOT.
5:09 To all YT'ers making vids, for the love of all that is holy, please MATCH YOUR VOLUME! So often the speaking parts are quiet and the music is LOUD! The RUclips Audio Library has lots of great songs to choose from, but they are LOUD and you will need to reduce the volume of them and not just slap them into your timeline when editing. Thnx.
Probably one of the most important tips out there. I've came across many tutorial videos from small channels that had their background music blasting through my ears and can barely make out what they're saying.
Absolutely agree with this! Even I did volume editing my sounds in my very first video ever, and it was just a small showcase for my gaming mods, so not even a "wanna be a RUclipsr" thing 😉 (You don't need to click on my name, there aren't any videos, it's another channel 😂)
I had a look at my editing software for the first time today and almost had a mental breakdown. SO. MANY. POSSIBILITIES. And I understand none of them. But I'm ready for the journey, especially with your tips!
Good is done and Done is good. Good is not the same as perfect. Don't do 300 hours of editing on a 3 minute video. It can always be more polished or fine tuned and tweaked just a liiiiittle bit more, but it is better to just call it done when you are ready to say "it is good." That's what the main message of that is meant to be. My father got a doctorate and his professors told him: "There's 2 kinds of theses, the ones that get finished and the ones that are perfect." If you keep striving for perfect instead of accepting that there are gonna be flaws or a point where you have to stop editing and say, "okay, good enough" then there's never going to be a video at all.
I've been editing for almost 2 years now, and I know that my last video is way better than my first one, time will make you grow your editing skill, I'm still learning every single day, thanks for the tips Sam!
This is great advice! I used to work with traditional media more than a decade ago, sat down to edit my first video full of confidence video and realized that I knew nothing about editing for RUclips. Thank you so much for the tips!
"Releasing something and learning from the mistakes is better than aiming for absolute perfection and having it never see the light of day." - Someone who could actually decipher the advice.
Sam, the L & J shortcuts for FCPX have totally blown my mind. The way I *don't* have to listen to myself drone on in normal speed haha. Thank you for this brill video.
"Done it's better then perfect" is very true and setting yourself an upload schedule really helps that happen a little over a month or so ago I told myself I'd upload every Monday and Friday and sure as hell they aren't perfect. Some I really really like others well... they at least got made and honestly that mindset has made me like video making a lot more and relieves some stress of the process imo
Me as a music producer coming into video editing: I'm so glad to step out of my music comfort zone and learn something new! Sam Woodhall: A good video starts with good audio Me: Back in my hole then Honestly though, it's so interesting to see the same concepts I love in different applications and more importantly, communities. Bang up job
Awesome tips. The best one was the BONUS tip because an over thinker like me always wants perfection & I need to realize that “PROGRESS OVER PERFECTION.”👍🏼
Thank you for this. I’m starting out and may not understanding all of this but the great thing about your content is I can watch this again and gain more from you. Much appreciated!
I started making youtube content about a super saturated topic because of this channel. In that topic I spend a lot of time figuring out what would make me unique, and set me apart from all other call of duty youtubers out there. It all started as just something I did along side twitch, but now I am more proud of my youtube than my twitch if that makes senses? I feel like twitch is a performance and youtube is the album and i like dropping curated content...
I have to say with your Tip #6, the quality of Harris' videos is awesome. Some of the best around I have to say. Also, those tips are great, but its very overwhelming thinking about learning and doing all that, it's actually very off-putting trying to make videos as "live" streaming is wham bam thank you, mam.. PS, love watching a fellow pommy. You are definitely the wizard behind the curtain
Another tip is usage of the arrow keys. I'm not sure if all programs use it, but for Davinci Resolve it does. Left and right keys go frame by frame. Top and bottom go to the last edit cut you did. Those keys made sure getting the right start of a clip or audio were exactly where I wanted it to be, and it made it easier to zip through videos and make sure there isn't any gaps between each cut and so forth.
Awesome Video, Sam! If I were to give 1 tip, it is to watch your own (finished) video with the mindset of a viewer. This way, you'll recognize what to cut out, shorten or emphasize.
Currently giving my gaming channel a fresh start, I've made all my videos and streams private and gonna give it a change, yours and Harris' videos have been super helpful and I've only been subbed to you both for a few days. Much appreciated and keep up the amazing work.
Hey Sam just wanted to say this is my second time watching your channel and I love this video it's been really helpful, I can't wait to start recording and editing my youtube videos.
I'm new to editing and have been using crossfades a lot for big cuts in recording. Mainly just doing playthrough's and cutting out footage where nothing is happening, but for some games that's pretty often. I'll try to steer away from using them all the time and find ways to mix it up. Thanks for the tips!
Great tips! As a software developer, I love the bonus tip. Pushing out products to your customers and clients are something many developers struggle with. Sure, you don't want to push out crappy quality, but the Pareto principle says that the last 20 % of quality takes 80 % of your time, and the customer/client probably won't notice or care about the difference. I ask myself "is this good enough?" and usually it is. It doesn't have to be perfect, just good enough. What "good enough" is will of course differ from project to project and client to client -- creating an autopilot system for a commercial aircraft requires a higher quality than creating a small tool to fetch what's currently on TV -- but the statement is true for both types of projects. I just discovered your and Harris' channels and I am intrigued. I was recommended your channels tonight by RUclips. Really uncanny because recently I have thought about creating RUclips videos where I teach software/web development from start to finish. There is a lot of awesome programming tutorials out there, but I haven't found so many tutorials that teach the stuff around the actual programming. I mean project management, documentation, version control, issue/ticket management, releasing, publishing, marketing, pricing, selling etc. When I graduated from university I had learned programming, but not how to put my skills to practice in real whole projects. That's typical for all university education, I guess. You learn things in isolation and then after graduation you are like a deer in the headlights. Your and Harris' videos will be instrumental for me when I'm finally deciding to start.
Play it again Sam! is what I am doing with your videos to help me with mine of which your videos are far more superior to mine but with your guidance master I hope I will get there, May the editing force be with you
Just wanted to say, you are an absolute legend. I absolutely love your work, Harris too. I'm so happy you're getting the recognition you deserve. Keep up the great work man! Big fan!
Two questions: what video editing software do you use? And what other websites do you get sound effects and music from outside of Streambeats and RUclips? I’ve been using Fimora9 and Filmstock for audio effects.
I thought about a video edit for work for 10 days and did on due date within 3 hours, but it was thought out and executed after much deliberation internally. I cant say id execute as well having not thought it out for the most part prior to.
Thanks for this Sam, I came after watching Alphas video. But as a fellow editor that's been doing editing since I was a kid I think I needed to hear your final tip. I hope to get something uploaded this week to begin my journey.
Thank you so much Sam! You’re the best so much quality info on here from a fellow video editor I’m about to make my first RUclips vid. Cheers. And much appreciated
I would love to see more of this. I've started making videos but they are just raw lets play material editing and scripted content is really the next step for me so this is great stuff. I need a Sam. LOL

This is what I'm paranoid about with my outro music, I adjust the volume but not always 100% if it's low enough.

Uploading regularly is the most important thing and as long as you improve with every or every other video you are doing everything right.

Your own presentation plus your editing techniques make you very engaging. I'm sold.
Great tips! Incorporating them tomorrow! Thank you for all you do!
When you come here first, and then have to back track to Harris' video
I watched Harris for a few days. He’s hot lol and helpful. I really appreciate the intel.
I come back to this video again and again. Very Helpful!
This is great advice! I used to work with traditional media more than a decade ago, sat down to edit my first video full of confidence video and realized that I knew nothing about editing for RUclips.
Thank you so much for the tips!
I really like that you and Harris both reinforced the importance of audio

Just uploaded my first ever edit on my gaming channel.
The first two hours was hell, then it became addictive!

Thank you for the tips! Use to do RUclips a long time ago, but re learning little tricks will help me get back into it and have some fun with it!
Done is better than perfect is the best tip I've heard. Thank you!
Number 1 is the most true! Audio is more important than visuals! Bad audio can drive people away way faster than bad video!
