I just saw this for the first time - LOVED IT!! By the way - on the flip - that was me! I've only recently stopped editing the main channel videos as of a few weeks ago!
That’s amazing!
this was great insight!
👑We loved it as well and Happea for the tips. Still editing all of ours💛
I'm so glad you made this vid it allowed film booth to teach me so much
Thanks, stole it!
Great job! Since the start of the channel, we have learned a lot about editing such as the J-cuts, the importance of rhythm when using b-roll over music, and cutting out redundancy. Thanks so much for the excellent video and nice editing!
-Jack (I edit this channel)
Hey Jack! You do a great job now, the style you've got there works so well to keep you hooked.
You guys inspired me a lot when developing my own style, I pretty much steal the pitch drop + black and white effect in every video I make (just makes the comic moments so much better :)
Ahhh .. Real life tube buddies
Hype.
Hi Jack, not sure if you’d still reply but what gave you the inspiration for the camera flip to mimic a different camera angle? I genuinely think that’s genius and wonder how you can come up with ideas like that.
@@FilmBooth I thought the bg light looked similar to Graham's xD
Not knowing how to level up is a great point. Not only should we naturally be leveling up video by video but there's got to be at some point where you consciously level up; taking on a project that seems way out of your league.
For me, that was making a few 45-80 minute videos. If I can keep people entertained for that long, sky's the limit.
Now when I go back to making regular length 20-30 minute videos, it's a piece of cake and not such a daunting task anymore
Absolutely love your channel man. Great work
jesus you get a lot of views...
If you don't mind my asking, how do you handle taxes and stuff for making money from RUclips whilst in china?
For editing to music, edit to the snare/clap. The kick becomes muddy and inaudible when there is talking over the track or when the mix is lowered. Because of this, the snare/clap becomes the most important percussion element and can add a more recognizable rhythm for your viewer to engage with. Thats my friendly tip :)
This is excellent content!
Thanks Hillier! You've been very inspirational, I'm always telling people to watch your stuff!
Love your videos Hillier! Learned a ton from you!
Great to see the thumbs up vote of confidence
Wow ✊🏼
ikr
The camera flip is genius! Great video.
Flipping the camera is horrible and totally over editing... And it directly contradicts the previous tip of leveling the eyes when zooming to HIDE the cut.
Flipping the image makes the cuts obvious! Even makes the video tiresome to watch.
Unless you're wearing a shirt with text on it or there's text on the wall behind you or something like that
@@Wonderhussy or any object, background and everything else
Hi Bugs :D your content is very pog
I guess I’m not the only Beytuber here lol
A really, really excellent video. I do many things naturally but thanks to you I've discovered a couple more! Thanks!
majes si tú ya retienes más que una Fireblade al entrar a curva 😂
illo, pero que haces aqui niñoooo
Great tips in this video! I'm learning so much 😌
Bookmarks for my own convenience:
4:30 - J-Cuts
5:12 - Mirror-flipping video - appearance of multicamera setup.
5:43 - An example of how music completely changes the impact of a video.
What did I just watch?
Some people actually pay a lot of money to learn all that in an editing class. But you just smashed it into my face so perfectly in this great video.
I'm now very motivated to make my boring German class videos as exiting as your videos.
Let's see if I can do that.
😁
Mal Zeit!
This is great info!
He did and it won't cost me time to go to night classes to lear these simple tasks, nut then again do you think it would help to have classes?
so, did you make it?
@@steeledgator I guess the other thing is, if a hiring manager is placing such a high premium on credentials and no attention to any side projects you have tried launching, that possibly tells you something about the culture you're about to walk into (for better or worse)
"This video deserves a million views" gets thrown around a lot, but this video definitely deserves it. The most interesting editing video I've seen in a while that actually makes me WANT to edit instead of avoiding it.
Thats awesome, glad its motivating you, theres nothing worse than having to force an edit out
I can’t even begin to explain how valuable this was. It’s hard to find editing videos that go into the art of it. A lot of people just go into the logistics of how to do it. Thank you so much.
I agree ^
My thoughts exactly
this is amazing. OKAY DUDE i’ve barely forced myself to pause the video before there’s another ‘you gotta watch this next’ ending you throw at me and i do go and watch it again and FORGET TO COMMENT. but i need to comment. because seriously the amount of value and information you’ve given that make things clearer and less intimidating for new youtubers in such a short span of time?? and it seems like so much hard work, and knowledge, and experience??
it’s one of those youtube channels where i can’t help but be in a bit of disbelief someone shares such gems so accessibly and for free. thank you lots huge respect
Glad you liked it Nina :)
I've been a professional editor for ten years, literally we've won multiple awards for our projects and more than anything the way you presented this content taught me a ton of stuff, instant subscribe. Consider me impressed as all hell!
thanks Leon, check out hillier smith, i felt the same way about his stuff too
@@FilmBooth l like your videos much better than his. I watched him but he did not really retain my attention. But that is the beauty of youtube. Every person has different tastes and expectations for content. So there is room for all kinds of creators.
@@KatinaBlue That's one of the things I love about youtube!!
What software is he using in this video? Can anyone help
Although I do gaming content, I've realized how much more I can improve my own content following these rules
glad to hear it :)
I also do gaming content, just a lot worse. I'm trying to improve though.
I do art timelapses, and this has given me some ideas on what I can do different, thank ya!
@@ladykaydoesart7702 i glanced at your videos, and you should definitely work on your thumbnails. Also make more shorts.
@@TheBluePhoenix008 Thank ya, I'll definitely do that!
Ah Ed, this is so good! It's wild how much better that 30 second section was than the original. I also loved how you incorporated the tips into your own edit of your tutorial after you drew attention to the technique (like flipping your footage to make it look like a different angle). Thanks as always for the insights.
Best ending ever! I've been making film and videos since 2000 and it's fascinating how different one needs to approach the medium when your audience isn't locked down in front of a 40' screen in a dark theatre. One can get away with a lot more spaciousness. But obviously it really all depends on what your desired outcome is AND what the viewer's desired outcome is. Great break down.
This is phenomenal. I love your tips and enjoyed watching the cut version side by side. Thanks for teaching us. 🙏
Glad it was helpful!
I keep repeating this, but I love how you genuinely practice everything you preach! Also, the fact that your focus is on teaching us how to make BETTER videos is such a refreshing change compared to similar channels who get bogged down with tags, keywords etc! Everything in this video was new information to me, except your point at the very end!
Glad you liked it, to me making better contents the tough bit and the place I can help the most so seemed like a natural progression to focus more there
@Codelio well said! I agree 100%
@@FilmBooth if i get a copyright. So what can i do next !!!
@@ImAmit01 😏🤣
There are three key successes to a thriving RUclips channel.
1) Unique Enjoyable Content
2) Personality and Charisma of Content Creator
3) Very appealing and smart editing
If you can get all three, then you will hit the 1m mark.
You can outsource number 3 and you can naturally grow with number 2.
Number 1 is continuing to be creative with the ideas for many years.
That's where you will always have to shine to become legendary....
Omg, thanks a ton. This video is amazing and now I know my mistakes lol. Thank you for this great content.
I am learning so much from this video!!
This is fantastic! Instead of just telling what to do...seeing you do it and how it actually improves the video...is SO helpful!
Man your editing is getting better and better each video! I know you posted about this video not performing as well even though you pumped a lot of time into it but I speak for a lot of us creators when I say, these types of videos are what matter most. Passion projects like this are always great and oozing with originality. You will get the exposure you deserve. Now excuse me while I replan my whole approach once again to video editing!
Thanks man, it was just a title hiccup on my behalf, lesson learnt, glad you got something from it, always good to know its having the right impact
Amen to that!
Learned some really interesting tips from this video, thanks Film Booth!
Thank you. This video is a year old BUT just what I needed today. I've been trying to level up on YT, have been saving diligently to take your course, and this randomly popped up today as I was thinking my editing and video skills have evolved. Normally it was BS for me a 10 min video would take 30 min to edit. I spent about 3 hours today on a 12 minute video and wish I saw this first. Lots of great info to incorporate into my next one. So many thanks!
The amount of work editing your editing process and then editing the actual video is insane. Appreciate it greatly!
this is so good!! intended to watch this, then drop off for bed-but oh welp I guess your retention techniques worked on me 😂
edit: it’s been a couple of minutes and I’m still deciding whether to click on the end card or sleep haha
Hahaaa! This comment is awesome!
Oh hey fancy seeing you here too Zahid 😂
To this day, brother Zahid is still debating whether to go to sleep or click on the end card.
this comment was hilarious and very relatable😂
Right?? 🤣
Graham Stephan should appoint you as an Editor xD
I've been editing videos for nearly a decade and after watching your channel I feel like a total noob. Just goes to show that there is ALWAYS so much to learn! You've earned a new sub.
Insanely good, Ed! You're a great editor, great teacher and great entertainer! Thank you!
wow, this is so helpful. Great tips. thank you!
I agree! I'm going to use all of these tips myself 😁😁
Awesome content! Your a master at teaching, and video retention. You effortlessly drew me in to watching about 5-6 videos all the way through and I learned a tremendous amount of information. Well done!
Great to hear!
@TheCobblerGobbler Yeah, which editor? I am looking for a good one to use. Thanks
@@Stuff112Channels I have no idea, but 99% of youtubers use Adobe Premiere Pro and it’s the most practical video editing software sooo…
@@IlyasSAHN thanks, is it free?
Truly fantastic to see what it was before and after your edit. Most channels just talk about it but having the visual along with the explanation was great.
I can't even DEAL with how under-rated you are. THANK you so much for all the value you add. loved this video
I love how you edited this whole video. You drafted each scene added in the right b-roll techniques and even kept me on your videos without switching to another video! Well done! Also I LOVE how you planned your outro! Very nice 🔥🔥🔥🙌🏽
This is the only RUclips Growth channel I have seen with actual useful advice, I thought I knew how to edit until I watched this.
This is one of the most useful RUclips production videos I've seen. Makes it crystal clear what's wrong and how to do it right.
This is the video I've been searching for. Very appreciated 🙏
1:46 repetition
2:41 Pace - J-cut + jump cut (same eyeline)
5:25 Music
6:13 Poor footage - cover it up with B-roll, image, text + transition, movement, etc.
7:08 Va Va Vroom
8:33 B-roll
10:00 The ending
Bro your comment needs to pinned asap
That was SO good...as a one man show I LOVE the flip idea...definitely going to add that to my editing. One point I learned this week that I think is worth sharing is never make any scene more than 7 sec MAX without a change. 😀
There many exceptions to to the 7 secs rule. For example in interview channels where two people talk for the entire time
This channel is jam packed with so much valuable insight. I'm blown away at how much thought and detail goes into these! 🔥
Thank you, Film Booth. These tips were extremely helpful for me
This is great for informational/non-fiction content, and probably always a bonus for those use cases. For creative or "experience" content however, it's harder to find a one-size fits all videos like this. I've seen this and the "don't be boring" video of yours and let me say, great content :)

P.S Sorry about the surname slip up
Might think about pinning this one to make it easier to find. Not tryna tell you how to do your job, just trying to help.
@@BoomerWarfare Thanks!! I thought I'd done it so glad you pointed that out
Great video!!! Definitely going to try and cut more non-essential talking out of my videos and add more picture overlays!! Also going to run my voice over to the next scene more! Awesome!
The thing is...i look fugly while on camera filming, especially if i'm the main person in the vid. T.T I'm a scary white dude but take good selfies. dunno
Which editor did you use
I have been watching your videos one after the other for like an hour, great valuable content. Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks a lot!
Dude so much good information in this video! Thank you! The revamped version you created was 10x more intriguing and hard to stop watching vs the original. Ive actually stumbled upon Grahams channel before looking up financial advice lol. On a side note I feel the same about your content, every video is non stop information and I find myself watching video after video!
This is sooo sooo good. I was engaged in the video whole time and now shared it with my team member.
Thanks :) Shares are always a goal, so glad you liked it
That was a great video! Lots of great tips.
Def gonna be using this! Thank you very much!

@@minhtam-akaruikokoro1437 lol.... someone obviously didn't watch the whole video
This is brilliant information! Thank you for putting this together for a noob like me. Love how you demonstrate each point and give the "heres without" and "here is with" comparisons
Thanks for the valuable tips! Keep up the great work!
Such incredibly useful content. Since finding you, I have reworked my editing and really seen an increase in retention. Thanks for your great work! Regards, Dan.
Great to hear!
Love it❣️ I have noticed that I say “like I said before...” - & now that is the biggest cue for me when editing to cut it because I am clearly just going to repeat myself!
Ed you are a Legend! The perfect blend of educational & entertaining content featuring brilliant video editing ♥️
This content is GOLD! Right what I needed at this time. Thanks a lot!
This is wonderful! I suffer from massive drops on viewer retention (up to 40% by the first 30-60 seconds) and I am slowly trying new ways to make it better. This will add more ideas for me to play with, thank you 💜
Not gonna lie, this is one of the best editing tip videos I've ever watched. Thank you so much for this!! I've been looking for a video just like this for a long time!
This is golden! So many awesome tips packed into this short vid! You just got a new subscriber!
love the no nonsense way you have delivered the points. Now to apply them in my own edits :)
I usually never comment but your video quality, the script, the crazy hardwork you put in your videos, the ALWAYS NEW information and the unique content just makes my fingers start typing automatically 😀 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 You rock
Awesome thanks :)
I cannot tell you how much I love your channel. (I have mixed feeling when people say this to me, but you really do deserve far more subscribers!) This video was brilliant. I had always been a little worried about my pacing, but hadn't really had the courage to try out j- and l-cuts. I watched this and gave it a go on my latest video. I'm not sure that I got it a 100% right - it is a bit tricky - but the audience retention amongst my subscribers is right up. About an extra minute at the moment! (And this is on top of an improvement I got from adding more b-roll, even if just photos with a ken burns going on!) I can feel that it feels faster paced and more engaging. Thanks so much.
Awesome!! I can believe it would boost retention doing those things, every little bit of extra effort adds up. Keep practicing and you'll start to find it all more natural too :)
I would have never expected to see you here of all places, Prof, but it goes to show how this kind of advise applies to practically every creator on the platform.
Most helpful video yet - wow. Thank you!! I will be using these tips for sure!
This is getting shared to my community tab! GOLD!
These videos are mini masterclasses! Thank you so much 👏👏👏
My pleasure
Damn, you've explained the whole process and sucked me in at the same time, well done! New subscriber, really intelligent well thought out strategies and skills 👏 thanks for the great advice.
I see so many of these kinds of videos, but this one is genuinely helpful. Thank you!
Excellent work! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
I’ve been bingeing on editing videos this month so believe me when I say, this was THE BEST one I’ve seen yet.
Happy to hear that!
I am going to see YOUR first video and see your starting point!😁

THANK YOU ⭐️⭐️⭐️so many great tips & the ending way great 😂
This was fantastic- so helpful, thank you!
Perfect execution on the outro. I don't know how anyone can avoid that video after you did that
the ending was rude, brilliant, and hilarious.
FACTS!!!
This is the best video I've seen in a while. Good Job!
Amazing, I learned a lot. Appreciate your efforts in creating this video!
Knowledge bombs! 🔥
This is incredible
Amazing edit! you put in the work and it shows... All your videos 💯. Thanks for the tips
I love this video. I think I've seen it 4 times and learned something each time. 👍
I liked it when he explained how to keep viewers engaged until the end of the video and the video ends.
He made you watch it to the end + he proved his point by making you watch it to the end *excellent*
Dude, this is such good advice. Really shows how just being able to edit the video can make it so much more watchable. At least if you got ADHD.
Banger video. Really clearly explained. Thanks!
I’m just starting to finally get some good growth with my Shorts. I’m a little worried that I’ll bomb my long form content. This video has given me a new and refreshed outlook. Thank you!
Changing the B-roll on beat of music -> 🤯
You can take that really far too, if you really want to geek out, go watch the previous video, every cut is on a beat.
I’ve recently started a vlog channel and I happened to run across your video on my home page. So glad I did and I can definitely see the mistakes and improvements I can do to keep my viewers watching through the end. Thank you for putting out all the information out there for us noobie RUclipsrs to fall back on!
You are freaking AMAZING! I'm a person that 2x videos on YT and I don't watch them all the way through but yours...WOW! Although I have to go right now, I have subscribed to your channel and will be coming back to rewatch this particular video and much more of you content...if not all. Keep up all the great and hard work!
The ending! 😂 perfect. I was totally hooked. Such a great tip/idea to keep retention right to the end. The “soft wind down” approach I see with some of my fav RUclipsrs even has me click away. This has really got me thinking about some upcoming projects. Thanks so much for making your videos!
This was seriously great content! How can I get you to come help me and my team out? 😂
Theres an email in the about section if you want to send us an e-mail, or theres a link on the channel page that will take you to a "work with us" page and that'll show you what we can help with
@@FilmBooth perfect. I would love to just have a chat about obvious improvements you would suggest.
@@FilmBooth Ok, I’ve filled in your forms like a good boy, now eagerly awaiting a reply 😊
Lol
@@MentourPilot I hope you trolling now.
I love your videos, the storytelling, symulator b-rolls, the pace of video, especially when you slow down to emphasize important information or to pay respect.
Techniques presented here are for youtubers and not for mentor like yourself. I would place your videos closer to "professor's lecture" or "presidential speach" rather than "tips and triks" category. Imagine watching Faynman or Obama with stock b-rolls and j cuts. Or please don't...
But maybe you are planning a video for April Fool's day, in that case I can't wait 😁
I literally did this last week - Re-edited a video from over 16min to under 5min and deleted the original. In a week, the new version has already gotten approximately 40% of the view count the first had in 9 months.
Thanks for all the advice.
Andd that was just hands down the most useful video on learning how to edit better I’ve ever watched. You got 100% retention from me. Subscribed!!
Thank you for making such a fantastic video. I can’t wait to try out that J cut!
Damn you I watched the entire 10 minutes and didn’t even realize. Great content bro
I realized that only after reading this comment!
Honestly, thank you!
Your videos help me so much and I've seen an increase in my retention based on your tips. (I've had 0 editing experience, learning as I go)
Hard to juggle YT around business but loving the journey.
Keep giving us those gems sir 💎
Sweet! Glad theyre helping :)
Amazing video! Thanks for all the tips!
Perfectly summed up - exactly what I needed 😅🙏🏻☺️ Thanks
Ed I have watched this video twice already! This is really the meat and potatoes, keeping the viewer engaged and satisfied. I would love to see more of these before and afters, which I think is a much better teacher than just giving a list of tips (which you did but added more context). One note, the original title you had was what hooked me to save the video for later. I noticed when I came back to watch it you had changed the title. My first thought was, I'm not sure if I would have been as quickly interested in the video had you gone with this 2nd title originally. Not meant to be a criticism but rather hopefully helpful to you to know that there was something particularly interesting to me knowing the video was going to tell me how to improve my videos by using an example from a successful YTer's beginning videos. Not sure why that felt more enticing to click, but it did.
Thats interesting thanks, the reason I changed it was because it got the worst launch I've had for a very, very long time, id thought the title would be hit or miss but it was such a bad flop I had to try fix it. Unfortunately i plan the titles first and then all the content around the title so it'll most likely hit my retention now, but lesson learnt, don't release a video unless you're 100% confident in the title and topic
@@FilmBooth so then the trick is how to title it so that RUclips suggests it but also make it something people can't wait to watch. I still think the video will do well, because once your viewers watch it, they're going to stay through the whole video. It was a really good video Ed.
@@cominghomewithsusanneoh yea it'll get suggested more with a better ctr, the retentions pretty good, just flopped on the first day haha,
@@FilmBooth what if you used the first title to hook the viewer then a divider followed by the searchable title? Best of both? I noticed Cathrin Manning would do that and her videos seemed to do well.
Most Valuable video on youtube .
Imagine trying to get attention and showoff just because you got a checkmark
@@R0DBS2 ??? when did he do that?
Let me go apply some of these RIGHT NOW! Thanks man, love your content.
i saw this about a year back and now YT recommended it again and - actually Ed i wish you'd do more of these. like actually taking something apart and putting it better together and telling us the errors and how to fix 'em. You probably would not even have to fix them, for obvious lack of additional material/b-roll and such but telling us, that is the mistake -> he/she should have done that instead, to make it way better would totally suffice.
Thanks for putting this out there.
