Thank you for having me! And showing that slap multiple times, still the highlight of my career.
😂😂😂
Litreally Man your Best Showcase Clip on Internet,xd
Its a flipping engagement weapon that!
Inspiring! Fantastic nuggets of knowledge as a Hawaiian that loves waves how you described the waves hit home. Thank you very much Mr. Smith. I'm a classic culinary dinosaur all I know is cooking started Editing my own cooking content after losing my restaurant due to the pandemic. If you are ever in Hawaii come sit at our Chef's Table and enjoy a 7-course fine dining meal on us would love to pick your brain on your editing craft for my cooking food channel. You now have Ohana in Hawaii. Thank you both for this life-changing vid. Stay Blessed. Aloha Nui
Thank you both for sharing this. We've learned a lot from the content you've both shared. Still working on applying it all. Love the wave/beach analogy. A realisation we've arrived at recently, focusing on quality not quantity - aiming for a bigger wave each time... Working one step at a time towards that tsunami!
This is the collaboration that the RUclips community needed.
This is so good. I need to rewatch this video every single time I'm about to film a new video, I'm making a draft for a new video or I'm sitting down to edit. Epic!!
Nice one, even "TubeBuddy" agrees.
2Million%
Totally agree 😊☺️
lmao
Amazing content! Very rich. I'll probably watch it several times :)
1 million subscribers and u get 10k views per video.. nothing suspicious about that....
@@sdrawkcabmiay or hacked channel. or he is just posting comments under popular videos nad because he is verified his comments get pushed to the top and then he geet subs from all the kids
@@sdrawkcabmiay u are right tho. he has some videos with milion of views
Great conversation - ironically I'd like to see a longer version too!
Someone else asked, the original is much longer so maybe ill see what I can do with an un-edited version
Hi
@@FilmBooth maybe u can make a second channel and post it there , or u could make a Google drive link with the full thing
@@FilmBooth please more lol
@@FilmBooth yes please to a longer version (edited or otherwise)
can anyone tell me what Hiller meant by Spoilers being the best place to get music?
I had the same question!
Also scouring the comments for insight on spoilers
You ever find out?
Great content! Even though I don't consider myself a beginner anymore, I still remember getting started on social media. It was a tough journey. Of course, things are a lot easier now and I'm super grateful that I didn't give up and stayed patient all the way through. Consistency and hard work (I had to use Famester along the way, but it made it much more enjoyable and easier so I don't regret it) is the key and it always pay off. Good luck to everybody, you will make it soon.
Nice story, but how does Famester work?
One thing I don't think you get enough comments about is how good your interview style is.
I feel like there were so many points in this discussion where other interviewers would have interrupted, rightfully so in some places to ask Hillier to emphasise a point, but you let him run with it and then ask intelligent follow up questions.
Loved this entire thing, great job.
This is one of the best videos I've seen about RUclips content creation ever! Thanks to all involved
this guy is a legend, i started editing very differently cause of him
He is!!
I was going to post the same thing. MUCH better engagement and retention and saw a massive growth because of it.
Yeah editing can make such a difference, but it is also hard to find balance between it and other elements of the video creation process. What I can’t decide is how ruthlessly to cut out dead space.
same!
Your editing on this interview about editing is absolutely world class!
Thanks Chad :)
I know right! I love his videos. But it’s the authentic feel of his content that got me to subscribe.
I know! Always the best
Yup, was Clever putting the vids instead a constantly flowing animation to make edits less intrusive
I disagree, the edit around spoilers is weird, doesn’t make any sense..
It is so refreshing to hear someone say quality is the most important thing. So many say that you need to just push content with the right seo. Care about what you do, and the right people are going to notice that you are different.
Nice video, thanks for this! Quick question: Why did you create a frame around your faces during the interview part? Why such a thick/background border, when instead you could have filled up more of the screen with your faces? (I'm sure you must have a reason for this!) :)
How ironic that I just discovered both of these guys separately and now they're collaborating. Oh magical algorithm, you've done it again!
Yeah and what I like about Film Booth is he will collaborate with small creators too. He did a live stream a while ago with a friend of mine who has about 600 subscribers.
That interview could really be a HUGE turning point in my "RUclipsr Career" ! It hit me like a train and I re-listened it many times in the last 24 hours to make sure that it sinks in 100%. Thanks a million for this episode !
Yeah his videos are often so deep I have to rewatch them a couple of times. I think intentionally watching creators in this niche and actually taking notes is the key to really growing on RUclips.
But you can't even list one thing.
Sound like a fake account used to kiss butt without giving any reason for it.
@@aliensarerealttsa6198 🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@DominicSicotteException So what did you learn - How to promote a conman?
Shut up, bot!
You are gonna get so sick of me telling you how helpful your videos are. Hillier is a freaking genius. I'm so glad you pulled him in. I'm so guilty of dragging long videos on, I feel like my gaming videos need all the content. Recently I did a 60 minute video, cut it down to about 15 minutes, already hitting more views per hour in 24 hours than my videos as old as 6 months. This is a game changer, quite literally. 😁
Love this, thank you!
Absolutely loved this interview. I actually especially appreciated that you took a role of humility here, and really just let Hillier express his thoughts, but also that you asked some really really good questions in the first place. Would have subbed to you instantly if seeing this video and wasn’t already subscribed.
The best bit I got from this video, noted down:
At the end you as the watcher should have changed. Whether it's emotional, a thought process or a new idea.
If you've watched the video and got a completely new perspective or a new emotion you've done a good job
If your audience has the same emotion at the start of the video and at the end, you have a problem
Your content hasn't done enough for them, there's no change, no new memory
The creative process is asking yourself how can I take them on that journey...
What emotion are they going to start with and what emotion do I want them to feel at the end
Here's what they know now and what will they know at the end
I have never seen a video that made me change emotionally or otherwise, you’re reaching.
Man this is what I needed to see today!!! I’m 34 and since I was 13, I’ve been a creator; music, film, animation. Etc but my first love is music. I got into it because of my passion for writing. After being told I had a talent for writing music by teachers and family and friends that I respected, I dove in head first by 14 yrs old. I had a full recording studio by the end of the year and what I realized almost immediately was that while writing and recording were amazing, I found myself really coming to life and finding my true artistic self in the editing and mixing.
I'm late to this one, but man, you're channel is extremely helpful. Posting "all the time" varies with the content you make, but having ideas already laid out for the picking definitely helps alleviate the pressure.
The fact that you kept replaying that slap is killing me 🤣
I had one more in there I took out to stick to the comedy rule of three
@@FilmBooth ❤️

What's your average viewer retention time? Really interested
Do you have a video on how to get subscribers button from smart phone to smart phone. There's not many basic ready-made subscribers button for mobile to mobile on RUclips
So useful with so many great tips. Thanks
So good! Great advice here. By the way, I'm literally sitting here watching multiple of your videos ("session time") and appreciating that they aren't too long (digestible). Well done.
“Editing is an art form”. Love that mindset and will keep it when editing my At Home Workout videos. Thanks!
One word Ed: EPIC. Fair play to both of you! Brilliant content and the value it has..100%
Bro, your channel is grossly underrated. It's seriously #1 in your niche. Here's to a few million subs! Keep crushing it.
I completely agree
This channel continues to amaze me. You are an excellent host. These Q&A interview videos are hard to find enjoyable but you do a great job. Looking forward to taking these tips and applying them towards my RUclips journey. Just gotta get started.
Editing is a skillset that is so often taken for granted. An editor is an artist that visualizes what the final product will look like.
I was so excited for this one ! He is such a good editor and the best of the best
Loved it !
Yeah the editing on both channels is great, I am always inspired by such complex styled content.
You're channel has already helped me so much. My goal is to try and make each video better than the last in both quality of content and edit. Thank you for your channel and content! Great interview!
That’s awesome, :) quality is everything especially at the beginning, because everyone’s first videos are terrible.
Hillier Smith is low key not only a practical edited hands-on, but is also a philosopher, like the way he approaches his job is the reason why he is successful
Focusing on session time got me thinking. And the thinking behind shorter videos to keep followers binging made lots of sense...especially after I cut 70% of the video 😂
Another banger video! Love this conversation between you two because it’s super important. RUclips is complicated but yet it’s so simple when you hear it broken down like this👊🏼
I already watched this video back to back about 8 times (NO JOKE) because there is so much to learn from.
I honestly don't know why it isn't picking up. I've been having the same issue with my channel. My guess is your CRT is below 4% and I can only imagine what you AVG TW is (I think it should be at least 6 minutes). My channel growth sort of stagnated and channels like yours and Hillier Smith have been a great eye opener for me to bring my stuff to the next level. Though my content is completely different, there is a lot to learn from you guys. I have some theories as to why your channel is not picking up which may have to do with the theme not quality. Anyway, thank you for all the knowledge you provide.
The retentions actually ok, the video was an interview for the fans really, I never expected crazy CTR from this, its part of a very important system, I don't look at videos as individual units, a video with low views can often be the one that converts to business
@@FilmBooth Well, I guess I had higher expectations for this video than you. In a good way.
Same
the really cool thing about your content is that whenever I'm unable to film videos, I can always come back to your stuff to get motivated, inspired and learn more. Really grateful for your content!
Many excellent tips here! I’m a relative beginner at editing video but an idea ->
Maybe one way to deal with the video duration issue is to release two versions: A longer version ~ as people are asking for this interview, even ~ and a short version (with likely YT/Tik Tok/other shorts also)? Naturally, they can go in different playlists and be marketed as different versions. End screens could refer to the other version, also (e.g., the short version to share with a friend).
The long version could even be released earlier to test it somewhat and give time for the content to sink in for the creator, then the short version is released. If this might lose too many people, then try to do the best we can on a short first?
If a version doesn’t work well on a channel, then maybe have a different channel, like Casey’s Shorts, or put a longer BTS on IGTV, for example, which I heard was good for posting such.
Hope that’s useful! Not sure if it’ll work well but I hope to try it sometime.
This was the perfect length and editing style for an interview. I'm usually put off by interviews that are 30mins long or over. I don't like the shorts format for interviews either.
This is such an amazing video! He did a great job talking about the impact and importance of editing
Thank you a thousand times for this nice collab :)
I'm taking sooo much notes it's insane. This content is sooo informing - thank you
2nd video I've seen from you and you've got me hooked. Great stuff.
The bit about checking if a starting bit of content and the ending bit still makes sense after cutting out the middle was a mind-blowing moment for me. Great stuff!
2 of my biggest RUclips inspirations and motivators in one video. Forever indebted to your wisdom. 🙏🏼
I had subbed weeks ago but hadn't really watched any of your videos. I just started watching them 2 days back and the amount of effort you've put into them is astounding.
Welcome aboard!
Dude, you’ve become my favorite RUclips channel! So much valuable info, thank you 🙏
Brilliant advice! I have several niches that I could make content for but I'm not a filmaker or videographer and have no sense of direction in that department. The info that Hillier has shared is invaluable. I will study and apply it to the various topics, I am experienced in and want to make content, about. Less is more, get to the point, create "feelings" and memories for viewers, leave them wanting more. Got it!
Wow, that tidal wave metaphor gave me goosebumps 😳💜 what a perfect way to explain why sometimes is better to post quality content over quantity
Hey! Really great video! Loved that this video was just you guys chatting and it was edited really well by you! I was able to connect with what Hayden was saying and you asked really great questions to the point that they made me think about my own work! Would love to see more stuff like this!
Great video really love the common sense approach in editing you 're videos. It's all about staying on topic without boring people with unnecessary content.
Awesome! I’m trying to improve my editing skills on my videos and this was really helpful 🤘🏾
Incredible video from you both.
I’ve only been subscribed to you for about a few weeks now but I’ve gained an immense amount of knowledge that I can implement into my own videos as I just created my own channel.
Please keep doing what you’re doing, we appreciate your work so much🙏🏽❤️
Thanks, glad you're getting so much from the content
'Make a wave. Change the landscape.' Quote of the century. Going on my wall. This video and your channel Ed has wiped the footsteps of a thousand RUclipsrs from my beach. Now there's only Hilliers and yours. I get it. I'm with you. Thanks. (Now going to binge and take your session time up a tad.)
That’s one of the hardest things about learning to be a content creator. Knowing that all those little tidbits are important to you, but the viewer may grow weary if it isn’t in flow, or fun or important to them in some way.
Nice job interviewing and great content from your guest...great to hear someone that knows the trends and has an intelligent and engaging approach to making sense of all this craziness!
You guys are great. Lots of really useful information and always engaging. Just discovered both of you separately, and this pops up!
I have come back to watch this video several times over the past few months. Thanks for creating and sharing this content. Great information.
Brilliant, and you did a fantastic job interviewing him. You asked all the right questions, enabling Hillier to share many golden tips. Thank you
What a great interview and great editing for it as well Ed! :) Well done!
So happy I found your channel

This is value packed, thanks mate.
I've been creating short videos for exactly the reason mentioned -- engagement. Good to see that idea reinforced, I'll keep doing it!
This video should have millions of views. Seriously! I'd even argue that every RUclips creator should watch this and take notes.
Thanks for this valuable content. I'm certain this will improve my videos so much!
Both of you are awesome, and creating a branded style of editing is an important concept I’ve never named, but I now realize the importance of
Confession - until your interview I had no idea who Hillier Smith was other than his videos got served up occasionally in my feed. As a fellow editor - and FCPX lover! - i gotta say this was a really nice interview. Great insight from someone who doesn't just edit because it's fun but knows editing. And Ed, simply love your interview style too. Well done!
Brilliant interview! Love Hiller's behind the scenes videos so this was really cool to see! :D
This is one of those tidal waves for me, editing wise! Thank you so much.
That example of the tidal wave versus small waves in context to posting videos was AMAZING! I haven’t thought of it like that before.
Editing as an art form and self-expression is so true! It's such a valuable thing to know and it's been such a fun thing to learn. For me at least there's almost a different mentality in editing vs writing a script - this is your first thought, then this is how you revisit it, and all the while it's a way to let your personality speak.
It’s a beautiful thing. It’s so fulfilling seeing my old videos (this isn’t my main channel) and to know I’m growing and getting better. 🤗
Editing is an art form. Never thought of it like that , but I definitely agree
This was great, Ed! Thanks for a great interview with another master.
Glad you enjoyed it! Hope you're well Kai
Keep doing videos like this! First I watched the one with Leon, now this one. So much platinum-level value.
That last part about waves vs. tidal waves was really impactful. Thanks for sharing.
Loved the interview, tons of valuable information. *Our team took a lot of notes.* We appreciate your work as always Ed.
I've watched SO EFFING MANY would-be experts about what works on RUclips, but I swear, nobody hits on the practical information anywhere close to this channel. Thank you for sharing info that I can actually use.
Yes!!! Has it worked dave?
I am currently starting to build up two new youtube channels (one for myself, one in co-work with an friend) and this video gives me so much good insights. Thank you both so much.
This is my first time enjoying your RUclips channel. Great content! Looking forward to hearing more from you! Your video was so informative. Thank you so much!
I just wanted to say that you're one of the channels I enjoy watching the most and the time and effort you put into this video as well as other videos inspires me to both create and watch :)
Keep up the good work! ❤️
Ps:
Ofc I watch Hiller Smith, so this is the perfect combo :)
Great video and explanation. It's funny, because I've been telling friends to try and keep their videos a little shorter to help keep interest/retention higher and here you are re-iterating this for me. People have relatively short attention spans (Tik Tok, Shorts, Reels etc highlight this) and stretching something out is counter-productive. Thanks for sharing your insights!
The beach and (tidal)wave analogy resonated with me the most here! Thank you Hilier and interviewer plus potential team(s)! Raza :)
This is amazingly helpful. Thank you so much for creating this video. Great, easy to implement tips from Hillier. So many people seem to talk in riddles without any practical visuals.
Love this channel.
Very insightful 🤗. 100% agree about session time. Ed it’s too hot here to go out today so I’ve been binge watching your channel, even rewatched some. Quality viewing to up my game. Thanks 🙏🏼
One of my two favorite channels / people in the same video. Just brilliant video. One question that keeps me busy is that most suggestions or insights are about entertaining videos. Blowing up is rarely a tutorial video. I just started my channel. I do tutorial videos so far and I'm struggling both to keep the "entertaining" and keep audience retention. Got any advice?
Dude, you are the king. Your info is better than anyone, but so is your content quality. I'm happy to binge your videos even at 8/9 minutes. Rock on
I love your channel 💯💯💯 Learning so much …Looking forward to filming and getting more videos out and using this info to help make them the best they can be …THANKS FOR THE INFO!!!!!!
Top tier content! Extremely helpful and inspiring. 🙏
Wow! Thank you so much to both of you. I never ever comment, unless of course, I see something like this where Hillier is so passionate about the topic of editing that it literally moved me. Lol... Your advice has so much depth. Thank you!
Great video. Love how rich editing can be for your content. And that tidal wave analogy is on point!
Definitely deserves a subscription! 🎉 lots of gold here. HillierSmith is a mastermind.
You are a giant tide for me, thank you very much I value your content. I speak Spanish, I am a musician, and still, you contribute a lot with what you do. Saludos desde Colombia
What a great piece of content and so much to learn from! Thank you!
Wow that 5 min or less idea has got me excited! I'm floating around 40% - 50% retention on all my videos so gonna aggressively cut to under 5 mins and see if that makes a difference!! Thanks for this, loving your content!
Very cool - Thank you for that super informative content. I liked very much at the end the saying about the memory and the mind compared in a relationship to a wave and a beach, - and so on. Well done :)
To the person who’s reading this, you will grow your RUclips Channel one day don’t give up!
Thanks for the tips!
Damn karl
I've been watching so many videos about how to grow my channel and make good videos....and this by far, resonates with me the most and has brought me the most advice, thank you!
Crazy. The first couple lessons I started figuring myself due to how shorts are being digested.
Pretty exciting to hear it from someone experienced! Let's go
I checked the timeline i was at 3:00. 5 seconds later the video was done. I literally did not feel the 11 minutes And am going to watch another one now.
Keep what you are doing i prefer these pieces of content rather than being regular and posting garbage everyday. 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Great vid! The last couple minutes made me think. If you're in the RUclips game to become a star, you're in for disappointment *100%* of the time. Even if you do hit "star" status, the memory of you will fade away. Every time. We're just like vapor. Here, then gone. So stop striving to make people like you and your channel, and start serving other people with your content (and your life). This is where the fullness (not to be confused with ease) of life is found-in loving God with all you have and are, and loving others as you do yourself.
This was a great video I somehow hadn't seen - I clicked on the endscreen from the Ryan Trahan video which I got to that video from the video you just put out today.
I loved how you deconstructed "the interview cliсhe" with all those wise thoughts, but I still got a huge value from it and enjoined the humor so much.
There isn’t a ton of RUclips help content specifically geared towards entertainment vlogs (in comparison to like, niche down and talk about cooking lol), so I found this very interesting and useful. I hope one day, through trial and error, I can be this good! Lots of quality bits in here
Loved this BTS very cool to see how other successful creators get it done 😎👍
I always thought good editing was tons of cool transitions, sounds, music etc. But I was wrong. The last video Ive done was edited down to almost nothing and its my most viewed video. This is incredible advice from Hillier.
the editing grind is by far the hardest part for me, but I feel like I'm starting to catch on how to edit down my warzone vids to keep attention. Always room to grow! Thank you for the informative video!!!
