LIVE BEHIND THE SCENES BREAKDOWN - On Monday the 19th of June at 5:00pm BST I'll be live streaming a complete and very detailed breakdown of the making of this video to my mailing list. We'll look at everything from the idea to the packaging, writing, filming editing and more. Just something I noticed in the beginning the music and visuals picked up a bit too early and distracted me from what you were saying to the point where I actually didn’t hear it at all (use the visuals to reinforce your point not crowd it)
Hack 1: Use intrigue Hack 2: Challenge the viewer’s beliefs Hack 3: Use images of famous people Hack 4: To prevent clickbait, feature clips of said famous person at the start of the video Hack 5: Use contrast Hack 6: Keep to 3 main colours Hack 7: Test a few thumbnails / Use prediction AI Creator ML
I know this is supposed to inspire me, Ed, but James put so much effort into the thumbnail that I'm exhausted at the idea of doing this for my channel. I am an expert in my field. I share my knowledge simply to help others. But the idea of spending hours and hours in a desperate attempt to get others to help themselves... ... God. I don't know. Maybe after 2+ years of beating my head against the RUclips wall and still not getting monetized just trying to help others means I should just give up. After all, Diablo 4 and Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom just came out. ... All my belly-aching aside, this was a positively fantastic video, gentlemen!
I wish I could describe how much these videos help and how good they are where it feels like I'm not watching a tutorial, I've been watching many of your videos and I'm serious and trying to grow my channel. I've learned so much and I just want to thank you, because one day, I'm going to be big on YT
This is so true...I spend hours sometimes making various versions of my thumbnails to only then come up with totally different idea at the last minute and go with that. And amazingly, a great thumbnail on a "less than stellar" video will invariably outperform a mediocre thumbnail on a great video. So yeah, make better thumbnails! Easier said than done 😅
You’re a genius. I just realised that this is why car channels such as @Carwow would have a different colour vehicle in the thumbnail than the one they’re actually reviewing. 🤯
This was actually brilliant. I've never watched a tutorial or educational video that had me this engaged. I aspire to make content at this level. Thanks for sharing!
Hi Ed, I think that’s not only I’ve been learning a lot from your videos, but I learnt a lot more on how to improve audience retention by studying your style! Thanks so much! I started few vids ago to add graphics on my videos, but more on a Finzar style. Hi Finzar 👋. But thanks to you I found out that memes aren’t really perfect for my audience so I now decided to film my Brolls and use something more standard. Although since the introduction of graphics my videos went from a record of %30 retention to %60+ on my last video 😮. Can’t wait to beat my own new record 😊.
The B-roll at 3:50 had me laughing out loud - such a hilarious bit just in the background of the voice over. Subscribed for that incredible attention to detail alone. Thanks for all the valuable tips!
I love your videos and always learn new but I run a gaming channel so sometimes the tips in the videos don't feel quite as relevant because filming people is different than recording in-game footage. Some of the concepts still apply but it would be really cool to see your take on editing gameplay videos and thumbnails even if it's not something you're as experienced with. You likely know some big gaming channels that you could possibly collaborate with. Thanks for the amazing content! Big fan!
I dont actually work with gaming channels, sadly Film Booth videos are all designed for educators. Im glad you got value from them but the channel wont cover a gaming channel as it's not really my forte
I wanted to say : Thank you for all your Videos and the Hard work you put in them for us, i am still new to this, but with your guidance, tips and help you make our confusing and frustrating times actually enjoyable ☺
Watched one of your videos. Enough to make me subscribe, I find it not easy to try get monetized but so happy that other creators give so much great advice
Wow, that video was a blast! Packed with awesome tips for both seasoned and new RUclipsrs especially, Hack#2 on 'Intrigue' which I think totally connects with the first one, 'Creating emotions.' because you need intrigue to develop emotions and vice versa. ((P.S: James did the thumbnails like one of his French girls 🤣))
I understand the underlying reason to include a story in the video (the Marques control story), but man in this kind of videos I just want the juicy info well compacted without any additional stuff.
Excellent and informative video as always! Love your channel and how you make your videos. By the way the first thing that caught my eye in your video was your posters in the background :) those are awesome!! Have a great day and looking forward to the next one :)
You know.. after watching a lot of these videos, I just noticed that its pretty similar to how we do icons for games in the app stores. Most of the times, the characters faces and objects with a light background, and the colors popping up are the ones that work the best.. and out of the 4 thumbnails you presented to the "judges" .. yours was the one that clearly had brighter colors, and a certain object could stand out pretty easily, and when looking at Jimmy's thumbnails and other examples , you can see very similar things as well.. interesting! ty for the videos they are great!
We loved the pace of this video! What a production! We learned a shedload too including how to quickly draw a rocket. I'm curious about this thumbnail university now. We need our thumbnail person to enroll. 🙂 - Josh & Kalie
That is such a crisp thumbnail. I would’ve definitely been on the fence about which one was made by Marques. Thumbnails are my weakest point and this is a reminder of how much work could go into making one. Not sure if I’m happy or sad about that but I am sure that I’m still learning and I’ve got a long way to go. Edit: oh and glad James didn’t have to get his ear pierced and lose his job
I liked this video our strategy for video creation is to come up with the idea. Then make the intro and then a thumbnail title to compliment that into and flesh out the rest after those are satisfied
So the key to a good thumbnail is to build your own boutique advertising design studio. I used to work as a designer for a Hollywood design shop and your process is exactly the same as creating a movie poster, or any other ad campaign. It makes sense...I just wish I could get myself to do that kind of work again. It's hard because I burn out on design work quickly. Hiring designers is a good idea though.
Great video. Thank you. I started my channel in August and used Fiverr freelancers to make thumbnails and after a while I used the knowledge I built up as well as studying the designs of the freelancers' designs and started designing my own thumbnails. I'm not convinced my thumbnails create intrigue though but one thing I am very satisfied with is that it totally delivers on its promise. It means I have a pretty good retention rate because people get what they expect when they click. That's what has to be guarded against so I'm glad you touched on it. No point having a great CTR but dreadful retention.
Just love this combo, Ed and James duo... Question, does the idea for video come first then look at Thumbnail inspiration on other channels, or look at thumbnails to provide fuel for a video idea?
Ed: I was waiting for you to say "Baby Ruth". Love Marquez's eye movement and the sound effect. Epic. How'd you use the Goonies audio track? Lickd? Fantastic.
About the audio track I can see RUclips has identified the music and showing the info the same way when videos have a copyright claim. I wouldn't be surprised if he just decided he considers the quality of the video to be more important for community building than the ad revenue he is loosing by using the track.
Hey Ed & Team, can you make some videos around helping VLOGGERS title their videos. I love your content but struggle getting the titles right for my VLOG. I have made a bunch of 'how to' videos to try grow through search but my 'big idea' for the channel is how we are building our farm and home and when one video can include several story lines ( home renovation, chickens, horses, gardening etc ) i get so stuck knowing how to make a title that will reach the people who are interested in this lifestyle.

My pleasure, glad you enjoyed it :)
I’ve been working on improving my thumbnails a lot this year but I had no idea how deep the rabbit hole goes. Thanks for the awesome hacks!
I feel that. The psychology alone could be an entire college course. 😅
The Goonies vibe is strong with this one and I absolutely love it! 😀🎥👌
I knew I couldn't be the only one hearing that! Such a vibe 😃

Wow you really stepped up the production yet again in this video. I felt more entertained in this video than any of your other ones. Great work man
Excellent video!! Insights galore🔥 ... and Goonies music🎶🙌
Loved this video! Really refreshing to see all the fun parts mixed into the process too. Great job Ed and James

I watch all your videos. I don’t think I’d know half the things I do if not for you. Please never stop!
This has to be the best video on thumbnail design out there!
Thanks!! Theres not enough of them out there seeing how big a problem it is
i normally don’t comment. your videos are so enjoyable that i need to pause before i get up and grab a snack bc i don’t wanna miss your epic visuals

@@FilmBoothdo you know any channels that cover reaction based content creators?
The level of storytelling you have made a part of this is awesome! It's like watching a serial on netflix!
Outstanding 🎉🎉
One of the best video that gave a bag full of satisfaction..
lv ya mate..❤
Ed is a master at growing a RUclips channel; everything is just on point, EVERYTHING.
Bro, the more I go through this video, I see that you went on a whole Goonies kick with some of the music. ❤❤

Taking instructional videos to new levels 🐐🐐🐐
Cheers Kris
Awesome video! I love the music, makes it feel very extra fun and engaging.

Amazying video dude, this just shows how important thumbnails are to a video!
Changing the colours on the clothing in thumbnails seems so obvious now you've said but is actually so genius! Inspiring video as always 😊
I’m only 3 minutes in and had to say how much I loved the music from the Goonies. Awesome!
I understand the underlying reason to include a story in the video (the Marques control story), but man in this kind of videos I just want the juicy info well compacted without any additional stuff.

This was really cool Ed, Cheers for sharing it! Stay safe, have fun! 👍😁
As always. Lovin ya work Ed. Thanks for the vid and tips!
It's true, RUclips has basically become thumbnail wars😂
That purple one was actually a really crisp thumbnail. The composition and colour was superb.
Learned so much in such a short amount of time. This is amazing, thank you Ed!

That was quite the journey! Loved every minute of it. Nice work guys 🚀
Thanks a ton!
Another video that I'm saving to come back to again (and again) as I get further into my journey. Thanks for this video!
btw the production quality of this video is soooo good too :o
Ok… I love your videos regardless of music, but my 80s childhood LOVED the Goonies music in this. ❤️
Relating movie posters and TN I wouldn’t of thought to do that man that’s great u did really good with finding diverse eye catching TNs
Great video. Thank you. Brilliant! Both in knowledge and the storytelling. 👏
Thanks :) think this was the most enjoyable video ive made to date
i love how much fun you have in your videos. I find myself laughing with you!
Haven’t watched past the 10 second mark yet and I already know this is amazing.
Loved that video so much I genuinely didn't want it to end! 👏👏
I've GOT to watch the Goonies again! Great video Ed, Thanks!!
Fantastic video! Surprised no one noticed the Chromebook accessory with Windows logo though 😂
Masterful as always. No one comes close when it comes to educational content presented in an entertaining way 👌
You did it on this video. You hook us into this video without realizing it. Good work.
Great one Ed❤
This is like finding a recipe online and the first 3/4 is hearing the cooks life story
Your thumbnail for this video actually tticked me into clicking on it.
Wow realizing how much effort people are putting into thumbnails kinda stresses me out. I don’t got time for that!
Love the 1980’s goodie references, I had to watch your vid twice just for that 😂👍
Just love this combo, Ed and James duo... Question, does the idea for video come first then look at Thumbnail inspiration on other channels, or look at thumbnails to provide fuel for a video idea?
That was awesome. Solid information, entertaining story and great humour.

Holy crap. Your videos are truly amazing.
Love the colour grading in this
Dude, your videos are so fun and so informative. Keep. It. Uppppppp
I absolutely love your storytelling. Thanks for all of the great tips!
Love this and love the background music - GOONIES!
Shooting in 60fps for a talking head video is a unique and genius idea. 🔥
Thank you for the early video nightmare fuel! XD Fantastic video!
The Goonies Reference was my favorite thing I've seen today

Really enjoyed this one! Thanks guys!
Love the homage to The Goonies!
That MKBHD intro was terrifying
If I Was Asked Which One Was Not Made By Him I Would Not Know The Imposter Thumbnail Looks So Good You All Did Amazing
Awesome vid! Love the goonies soundtrack playing in the background! 🤙
I absolutely love your videos mate. I'm learning so much. Thanks a lot! 🙌
Goonies vibe goes hard! 🥳🤩
This was an amazing video!
I have made a load of notes and now hopefully my Thumbnails will be a lot better
love your background
my biggest takeaway is about that intrigue and challenge points, thanks guys
heh, i like how you sneaked in the moving dots and animated lines background throughout the video. straight out of MKBHD!
That was soooo well done!!! Thank you!
Fantastic videos buddy. You couldn’t have picked a better topic! You make it easy to understand and get value from. Thanks!🇨🇦🇨🇦👍🏻👍🏻
This video is well edited and perfect
fav part of the video is the drawings :) fr though I loved the whole thing thanks man
Insane video. Just starting out and am going to keep this in mind. Appreciate it
