Thank you, Jeff (with the great hat!) - this was super helpful. Your vlogs are a great way of empowering all those interviewing at Google, which is very humbling to see.
Hey Jeff, I have had my Googliness round yesterday and I had binge watched your videos to prepare myself for it. The result is still awaited, and I am keeping my fingers crossed for that. But I'd like to thank you for your videos, they provided the tactic to handle any behavioural question.
Thank you very much! I will have my interview soon and I really hope I will be accepted. This video was very helpful and made me even more excited to work at Google.
@@jeffhsipepi I had my interviews yesterday so your video came in very handy and right on time!!! I was much more prepared then to answer all their questions in the G&L round, and I did fairly well. Hey Jeff. Thanks to your help I passed my 1st round at google for an entry level GCS role. I’m looking to stay prepared for the next round coming up if you have recommendations on where to keep my focus? RRK and behavioral seems to be the theme thus far. Thank you for all of your videos!
@willwolfe9738, typically, more entry level roles will have a slightly higher focus on behavioral questions, and remember that you will also be asked hypothetical questions as well. Make sure you are prepared for both question types! Good luck!
@@jeffhsipepi Thank you for the response. I will continue to watch your videos and prepare for both types! One other question I had for you- What are interviewers thoughts on candidates using notes? For example if I have a google doc as my cheat sheet that I am peeking at as I answer my questions, is that looked down upon? I make sure not to read off of it, but to lean on it as an outline/for key data to answer questions. Let me know what you think! Thanks Jeff.
@@willwolfe9738 Do not let them know you are referencing notes, it is frowned upon. I recommend keeping the cheatsheet in front of your keyboard and taking your time before answering questions to gather your thoughts using those notes.

Ayush, for these roles make sure that your really demonstrate how drive results through data and don't forget to have a strong collaboration lens in your answers, good luck!
Nice vid! I think something that could really improve on this would be to give a mock interview example, perhaps with a less good way to answer a question, and then a better way. This might lower the level of abstractness of the Googleyness description and suggestive pointers you were giving
Daniel, thanks for your feedback! Googlyeness is extremely abstract because it is something that shows up in every answer. But I like the idea of presenting a bad vs good example, thank you for the advice!
@@jeffhsipepi just keep in mind you can still be a sociopath and have high EQ. This means they can leverage their understanding of others feelings to their advantage.
Is there an age bar to apply at Google? Do they consider only very young people for interviews? What about mid career professionals who want to start over?
@blossomingplum, yup, all ages considered! Does ageism exist in all companies, yup, it does, but don't let that stop you. If you are starting over and want to interview for a more entry level role, make sure your skills align with that role, you should be considered as long as you meet most of the qualifications. Good luck!
Miguel, common sense always plays a significant role in every interview! So much of what I focus on is not the interview itself, but basic human psychology. So yes, keeping it simple helps!
D.) Figure out how many airplanes are over a country's airspace at any given time. (The tip is, "Well, we've only had flight for around 117 years. Given this is an edge case, we'll review for deprecation as 99.999% of the time the product performs to the contract spec and SLA.")
Requiem for a Meme, so I love this way of looking at the question, sometimes our original thought is critical to showing our problem solving skills. A great question to this question is, can you tell me what year it is, is it this year, last year during COVID, or 1776? An important item for these estimation questions is edge cases and we literally lived through one last year and continue to live through one this year. We would also definitely want to clarify the country, what type of airplane, all airplanes, private jets, military planes, etc.
@@jeffhsipepi The company I'm working at is in the "next phase", consolidating legacy stacks into a marketplace-type product. And this is my first question whenever scoping something for a client, or working on an understandably tough QoS -- e.g. our talented engineers are often the ones who've been with the company(s) long enough to know old codebases, often multiple refactors ago in comparison to new hires. IMHO, allocating enough resources to confidently support legacy stacks while maintaining an aggressive roadmap is paramount -- though, I do work with binary logs and not so "sexy" products, so I try not to come across as the stody old dinosaur in the room (despite being the youngest in the room). 😅 My first answer to this question is usually... "Well, is there an API? We can just try deduplicating as many data sets as possible." Probs wouldn't work too well for a defense contract application tho, lol.
Hi Jeff, I came across your amazing and super helpful channel today. I am based in India, and interviewed for a role at Google about four months back. The recruiter informed me that the feedback has been positive and asked me about salary expectations as well. All this was 3.5 months back, and since then I haven't heard anything. The recruiter has been really kind and is responding to my queries, saying that the position is still open, but is not able to give me a time on when I can expect to hear back. How long can it take for Google to finalise the candidate? Would be really grateful to get any input on this. Thanks a lot.
Deepika, this is a really interesting scenario. I think it's time to ask for a little more clarity from your Recruiter. Am I still be considered? What is holding you/team from moving forward, is it my interview feedback? Is it common for candidates to stay in process for this amount of time without moving forward/being rejected. Simply state that since you are outside the organization, you are trying to get more clarity on your situation. And I recommend trying to get a competing offer to see if this makes them move or not.
@@jeffhsipepi Hi Jeff, many thanks for your insightful response. They've said that this is not common, I am still being considered. According to them what is taking time is that my manager is based in London, and I am in India, and also I was the first candidate interviewed for the role. I'll try and get in touch with the recruiter again. I guess, what I can do is try and get a competing offer and see if it makes them move or not. Thanks a lot again. Wish you a good day and good week. :)

Hi Jeff! Great, great video. Thanks for the amazing series of videos. I am prepping for my Program Manager interview at Google. I have a quick question - Do you think it's a good idea to ask for the interviewer's feedback at the end of the interview? Thanks!

Hello Jeff, I hope you are doing good. can you please help answering one question. i have been recently interviewed at google and recruiter reached out to me and mentioned they are in final review process. what does it mean any thoughts ?
IB, ask you Recruiter, this could mean being compared to others, going to HC, moving to comp review. In this process if there is ambiguity, ask your Recruiter for more clarity because oftentimes they are not communicating it clearly, good luck!

Hi Jeff, thank you for this very informative video. Do you think that these are examples of Googleyness that applicants have the opportunity to demonstrate in their general but not so much in the role-specific interviews?
Dionysia, great question, I want you to focus on bringing up these concepts in every interview, in every answer. Not all of them of course, but be thinking about how you can highlight your Googleyness as much as possible! Thanks!

Hi, Jeff! Thanks a lot for the videos, they are all very helpful! I'm going through them as I prepare for my 4 interviews (two role-related ones, leadership/googleyness, and the scary GCA :D), taking notes and organizing my thoughts. I wanted to ask: During a leadership and Googleyness interview, do they give scenarios and ask how you would handle them or they just ask you to give examples of things you already did? Thank you! Love the hat btw :D
Graci, thanks for the positive feedback! In the Googleyness and leadership interview you are most likely going to get a mix of behavioral questions and some open-ended. I have heard of candidates getting all behavioral, but be prepared for anything. Most Google interviews will have at least one open-ended question. Good luck!

Hi Jeff!! Thanks for the great content. You're truly amazing. A quick question...Is there any chance for a student from science background to be selected for business job?? I'm a biotechnology undergrad but I'm interested to work with POPS team...
P, of course, for any position at any company where your background does not 100% align, the first step is to volunteer, take on an internship, take an entry level role in that industry and grow your career in that space. At a minimum you want to build some of the skills they are looking for in POPS and then start to try and work your way into Google. I hope this helps! Thanks

Great videos Jeff! Thanks for putting this out there. I've got my first call with a recruiter at Google, interviewing for a Cloud Sales role. In the email sent across, the recruiter mentioned he'd like to chat more about my experience. Going through a bunch of your videos on GCA, RRK, Leadership, Googleyness, I'm just wondering what exactly should I expect with the first recruiter screening interview? Thanks!
Aanchal, this conversation will be super casual. They will be looking for your communication skills and assessing role alignment. Nothing to really prepare, just going in with a positive and friendly attitude is super important. Good luck!
Too bad google fails as a company in all these departments. Except positivity, they’re always positive about their direction even if they’re walking straight into a wood chipper they don’t even think to move out of the way
@SerpentBornOfficial, obviously there are a lot of opinions about Google and I am not here to challenge any of those views. Like every organization, there are positives and negatives. I will continue to highlight the two positives of working for Google are what the brand does for one's career and the comp/benefits are really good.
problem = opportunity? Cringe. And people not responding unless it's spun positively: that's acceptable behavior at google? Would you not respond to an upset customer?
W?O9pZ;E4I:; thank you for your comment, and let me clarify. At Google, they are looking for how you see opportunities even when something is challenging. So, using your upset customer example, this is an opportunity to turn the customer from upset to happy by seeing it as an opportunity to create a better experience. All negative moments can be treated as opportunities if learn from them and try to improve. I hope this helps!
What I mean is, even if someone's rude, you respond but, maybe ask them or bring it up to a manager, that they could be nicer. Ignoring a problem because it was called a problem? That's really bizarre and seems cult-like, quite frankly. If someone can't handle the word "problem", I mean... that's not normal; they need to see a therapist or something. Seriously. Maybe you were just making an example and I'm taking it too literally.
@@heh2k I appreciate your comments, we want to recognize situations for what they are, as an opportunity to learn and grow. So this is more of a philosophical item than a Google item. The specific reason for removing the word problem from an interview at any company is because it is a negative word, and removing negative words during an interview anywhere will yield greater success. I hope this helps.
Rajesh, they should last 45 minutes. I am getting a lot of feedback of interviews being cut short these days, but remember, you might have crushed it in those 30 minutes, so don't worry too much about the length of time. Good luck!!

Hi Jeff. I went through your videos before my G & L interview that happened today. The points that you mentioned were really helpful and helped me articulate my responses in a much better way than I had imagined. Thank you so much for making these videos !
Shreyas, amazing! Glad these insights helped you have success :)
Mahalo NUI (TYSM) for sharing all of your experience and knowledge to help others like me through the interview process. I never actually thought I'd be good enough to even be seen by Google, let alone be contacted by a recruiter just recently; that alone was a HUGE accomplishment for me! I've been doing a bunch of prep and research so I can try to be as prepped as possible before any interview. Anyway, just wanted to send my thanks for all of your great content and fingers crossed, I land something in the end. From my small island view here in Hawai'i to an opportunity to work at Google would be a dream come true!

One other question I had for you-
What are interviewers thoughts on candidates using notes? For example if I have a google doc as my cheat sheet that I am peeking at as I answer my questions, is that looked down upon? I make sure not to read off of it, but to lean on it as an outline/for key data to answer questions. Let me know what you think! Thanks Jeff.
@@willwolfe9738 Do not let them know you are referencing notes, it is frowned upon. I recommend keeping the cheatsheet in front of your keyboard and taking your time before answering questions to gather your thoughts using those notes.

Jeff - thanks for all you do. This channel is GOLD. One question - i am interviewing for Business Strategy Intelligence Lead - any pointers that you could imagine that might be helpful? Thanks
Hi Jeff! Your videos have been super helpful! Thanks for your content!

My first answer to this question is usually...

Ahh man I've just had a recruiter reach out to me from Google. Panicking a bit. Don't want to blow my interview.
econ001, this is good news! One of the first things you can ask the Recruiter is the urgency to fill the positon. Specifically, you can tell them, I am hoping to get some time to prepare, if I scheduled my first interview a couple of weeks from now, is that okay? Your Recruiter will let you know that item. The good news is you are starting the process, woohoo!

Graci, thanks for the positive feedback! In the Googleyness and leadership interview you are most likely going to get a mix of behavioral questions and some open-ended. P, of course, for any position at any company where your background does not 100% align, the first step is to volunteer, take on an internship, take an entry level role in that industry and grow your career in that space. D Hgg, I am unsure because this does not apply in the US. Is it common for companies to factor in this item?
Too bad google fails as a company in all these departments. Except positivity, they’re always positive about their direction even if they’re walking straight into a wood chipper they don’t even think to move out of the way
@SerpentBornOfficial, obviously there are a lot of opinions about Google and I am not here to challenge any of those views. Like every organization, there are positives and negatives. I will continue to highlight the two positives of working for Google are what the brand does for one's career and the comp/benefits are really good.
Leaving a bar code sticker attached under the brim of one's hat will cause a polite lunch interview failure.
Brad, haha, yup, epic fail on my end! I hope the video helped!
problem = opportunity?
