It’s always great when the nicest guy in the band gets basically treated like trash but ultimately he was the one who was the most punk. He didn’t feel obligated to restrict himself to only the music Johnny and Malcolm approved of.
True, but he got a lions share of royalties due to song writing credits and didn't get caught up in the chaos so he made out pretty well in the end.
@@justinlarsen2281 Well played.
He washed his feet too much!
@@xx7secondsxx Never too much feet washing
Beatles chords lol
When the original band got back together for their reunion tour in '96, it was VERY CLEAR that they were great musicians. Incredibly tight and powerful.
Yes Glen Matlock was the heart of their sound .,A couple of tours in the 90s,2000 proved that but ROTTENS Voice has changed., He's got too much PIL INFLUENCE,HE.used in the PISTOLS Which sounds like shit! As A. PISTOLS fan he needs the Aggressive vocal sound to sound Great
@@waynegates7180, at the end of the day, it's HIS voice.
They could all play very well except for Sid. Kid couldn't play a note without help.
It was obvious on the original demos and first album too. They only sucked when sid joined
I've never liked the Sex Pistols, but I'm surprised how much I enjoyed those demos with Glen. He just made them sound so much better. I wonder how different their career and legacy would have been if he had stayed
If you want to know how some Sex Pistols tracks sound with Glen Matlock's bass, you can listen to the demos on Spunk and their 1996 reunion tour. But there was no way The Sex Pistols would've carry on forward past '78, let alone with Matlock in the band.
The Pistols were at the disposal of Malcolm McLaren from day one, and he always planned fleeting path for the band, which is why he quickly conspired to take Glen out of the band and bring the musically incompetent and unstable Sid Vicious in the band, whose antiques would aid in their decline. And even if Malcolm hadn't done any of that, the band members hated each other.
Not long. Malcom didn’t have a plan beyond “chaos” and Johns way to much of an asshole for any reasonable person to tolerate king. Look how many versions of PiL there have been 😂
The demos sound way better than whats on the album imho
The band couldn't have lasted any longer than it did
thats part of their appeal
I do hate how Sid Vicious has become so famous and people presuming that punk is a music type without skill. I actually don't remember if I've ever heard those Matlock basslines before but they are SO GOOD! No way that somehow diminishes the song just because it's more complex than playing the root. I mean I don't think anyone's gonna question Paul Simonon's punk credentials and his work is very complex at times!
Loving the series and the covers. It's made me think a lot about what I'm doing in my own playing to develop more. Much love.
Sid is the reason I became a bass player. 'If you could be in a band, so can I'.
people've shat on Sid for decades now, and acting like he was genuinely horrible at bass and not drugged out of his mind whenever he played. He never would've been a great player but he maybe could've become competent enough if it wasn't for the heroine.
And now everyone's an expert bc learning instruments is much easier due to access to the internet so they love to pick on him
Wow those songs sound great with those original bass lines.
Have been in an AA meeting with Steve Jones, you can tell how much Sids death effected all the guys with how far down the members went. Great video Paul nice to see your face keep the content coming!
Except for Malcolm McLaren who might, or might not, have played a role in Sid's death.
what are you babbling about? McLaren didn't have anything to do with Sid's death.
@@luismarioguerrerosanchez4747 i was in a band Sids mum started She killed sid giving him his last heroin She was an adict herself
I was in a band started by Sids mum none of the band cared that much when he died apart from John
You're not supposed to say who was in a meeting with you. give him the privacy HE might want!
This was great! I just got done watching the Sex Pistols drama on Hulu and this sums it up. I find it interesting that so much of punk bass is played with a pick, yet Glen played with his fingers. I wonder if the Ric was because McCartney used one? Thanks Paul, another in a wonderful series.
Paul McCartney uses a pick for that matter
Paul used both but mostly a pick live. There's footage of him in the studio always using fingers.
I will never in my life get my head around how Glen played that stuff fingerstyle. I prefer to play just with fingers if I can, but if the song needs a pick, then I'm all for it. I just can't imagine playing Pretty Vacant with my fingers.
Maybe it was better that Glen left & didn't play on the record. Can't imagine NMTB with walking melodic McCartney basslines. It needs those simple punk basslines.
@@bobbystereo936 Yes, big difference between Glen and Steves versions of Pretty Vacant.
Great bassist Glen Matlock!
I really enjoyed this video. You had some interesting insights into the bands actual sound and what might have been. I love the Pistols Thank you for making this.
I never knew about Glen. Thaks for the video. I almost didn't click because Sid was Sid, nothing to cheer on about.
Now I need to find those demos. Great stuff!
Great video thanks paul for the information
My favorite band! Thanks for the video.
Insightful video man. Thanks!!
Considering Sid had to learn how to play bass after he had already joined the Sex Pistols its pretty understandable that he was at a beginner level, its just unfortunate the drugs prevented him from progressing further
Sid was just there to make the band look and be that band
Glenn was the real bassist
Not on the album
Paul, you're probably the only other person I've ever heard compliment Jones' album "Fire and Gasoline," but I agree--it's a fantastic record.
Great video - thank you
Glen Matlock can actually play bass, unlike Sid Vicious.
True. But the root note bass Steve did on the album without any fancy bass wanking suits their sound better..
Yep. The band was finished when matlock was gone
@@richardwellend3806 "Holidays In The Sun", "Bodies", "Belsen Was a Gas"? They clearly wrote more material after Matlock. But then the US tour happened..
It’s hard to play bass when your whacked out on heroine
@@RH-xs8gz didn't flea dabble with heroin?
What a band. Didn't buy nmtb...back in the day on vinyl...stupid...but just got a 77 UK pressing cheap..and the bass sure can be heard on this. Brilliant.
Paul, I love your videos. They are so interesting and informative. Could you do a video about the bassist Pete Farndon from The Pretenders? He's one of my favorite bass players. Also please do a video about Ben Orr of The Cars, he is another favorite of mine.
Thanks
I had of course bought their Bollocks LP way back then and I loved it. And I kept the record. Already in the early 80's I was realizing how muffled and bad the sound was. It just didn't sound good anymore, badly produced were my thoughts. And now after many decades this great video explained to me why. Excellent work 👍. Those demos were so much better and what a shame and missed opportunity it was that Glen Matlock wasn't playing on the album, because Bollocks is of course legendary even with it's faults, but know we know how much better it could have been!
According to Chris Thomas (producer) and Bill Price (engineer) Steve Jones played the bass on Never Mind The Bollocks, although Sid did record some bass that was allegedly used on 'Bodies'.
Glen was the talented one what a mistake getting rid of him
A video on Jah Wobble (in Johnny Rottena next band post-Sex Pistols) is required 😤👌
Thanks for mentioning the Neurotic Outsiders album.
I pattern di Matlock erano tutti una scarica colpi ben assestati! 😎🥊⚡️
Could you please make an episode about the bassist of Ghost? They have some really cool basslines in my opinion, and i bilieve that It could be interesting to have a look to their bass work. Btw i love what you do on your Channel ❤️
I have TONS of respect for Matlock. Those early Sex Pistols bootlegs were a huge influence on me. Particularly the 76 Club record. I kicked off my latest album with a cover of Matlock's 'Rock Chick' and then decided to name my album after it. Here it is if you'd like to have a listen. Enjoy! ruclips.net/video/MQtSY9iciB8/видео.html
I really like the bass on 'bodies' though. Great video!
That’s Steve Jones.
EDIT
According to another poster, that's actually Sid! I know for a fact that there are *some* bass lines on the album provided by Sid, but no-one really can tell which ones they are anymore.
Presumably, he played along with Steve's bass lines and whenever he got a part 100% correct, they kept it in favor of Steve's recorded one. Simply to be nice.
Given the fact that the two of them used the same bass guitar, sound and volume, it's impossible to tell any difference anywhere anymore.
As a guitar player who's been in a studio several times myself, I know musicians always go: "Oh, can I do this and that one chord again? I messed this part up." and *only* re-record those exact parts. No-one remembers later what exact parts were re-recorded/doctored, it turns into a blur..
And the version of "Anarchy.." is *not* the same version that was released as a single, the sound is identical to the rest of the album..
@@Stigmatix666 according to Chris Spedding, Sid did indeed play on 'Bodies', and there's a bass track of his on 'God Save the Queen'. But that's it. The rest is all Steve Jones (with Glen Matlock playing on 'Anarchy In The UK').
@@jonathanwebster7091 Chris Spedding is awesome but I find it hard to believe Sid could play well enough for Bodies. Thats their fastest most complex song on the record.
Cool bro! 👍
Totally right about great bassist Glen Matlock
watch the gig at brixton acedemy on their reunion tour how great Glen's Bass sounded and made their sound and msuic even more agressive. his bass lines would have made NMTB even better
Nice video! I have a suggestion, even though it's a bassist from an anime, but could you please do how to sound like Taira from Beck (mongolian chop squad)?
Always loved Steve’s tone on this Album that Les Paul custom and the Fender twin really was complementary in the mix with heavy compression in the studio really fattened the sound
Did you do Paul Simonon of the Clash?
You should do the Beach Boys, so many bass players within the band and within studio musicians they hired just in their studio output.
Glen's bass lines were rollicking and melodic; perhaps too melodic. NMTB was a howitzer. No pretense or nuance. Had Glen played on the album, it might not be the wrecking ball it is: a flawless slab of rage.
What notes is Glen playing in Pretty Vacant? I'd appreciate the responses, especially during his runs.
The Steve Jones bass parts on the album were less technical but gave it more of an attack.
c'est excellent mais c'est dommage qu'il n'y ait pas de sous titrages en français !
Has someone tried to tab out the live versions?
Grande Paul!! dobermann!!!
Damn, I've never listened to the demos before. I understand why they got Syd, the band was more concerned with image than music. But it's a shame. I really like what Matlock's playing did for the songs. Oh well, it is what it is. Still an iconic album.
And, at least we have the pogo dance.😂
Of course they were more concerned with image, they were basically a boy band put together by Malcolm MacLaren to make money for him.
@@Bassdriver They should have named the band Public Image, or something like that.
Oh, wait...
You should do a video on Andrew Weiss of Rollins Band and Gone
Could you please do Playing Bass in Weezer
Sid payed better than you think, actually, bootlegs out there.
San Fran is well mixed and root notes are better than melodic noodling for this stuff.
Glen Matlock's (natural wood & reddish tort pickguard) PBass looks alot like Mike Mills' (REM) Pbass.
Funny thing is, at the time, Johnny was a fan of the Bee Gees and despite his famous "I hate Pink Floyd" tee shirt, didn't actually hate them, he just thought the shirt was funny (this is from an interview I read in the 90s). It was really Malcolm who wanted to create the image of these ritually pure punks who would never listen to any older music or mainstream hits. All marketing.
Now seeing Lemmy and Sid sit down together would be interesting to see
Pretty Vacant. Classic.
Glenn Matlock rocks
Can you do John Myung, Dream Theater?
where i can hear the demo songs ?
All over youtube
Thank you for contributions and great videos! Any hopes for a mike watt video?👀
what a great video! good on you
Saw Matlock play with International Swingers, in 2011: Burke(Blondie), Stevenson(Gene Loves Jezebel), and Twinn(Supernaut). Glen and Steve Jones were too good for the Pistols.
They nearly never released the album because they were sacked by multiple record companies that would have been terrible enough but i could never imagine John Lydon NOT being the frontman. If he wasnt the singer and writer, they would have just been another coat hanger band for the ramones or similar.John Lydon(Johnny Rotten) was so essential to the band and they were in two minds about having him aswell.
Glen was the only musician in the Pistols. He knew what they called beatles chords (seventh, ninth, minor chords and so forth . Mac Laren sacked him for image. It really made the music poorer. His playing is reminiscent of John Entwistle or Paul Gray (the Damned). Sid was the right pick to write the Legend but his playing was limited although he could be quite good sometimes when sober enough... but he couldn't venture in music territories far remote from Dee Dee ramones which is emphasising the root note of each chord in the appropriate timing. I think he was a brilliant singer and could have been a leader; had he not been raised by a junkie Mother. His faith was sealed when he met his worse hallf: the infamous Nancy Spungen... Thanks for the demos. Had never heard them.
Sid was a wreck
Sid taught everyone anyone can do it
The Stooges were the grandfathers of punk.........not the Sex Pistols.
Yea, Sex Pistols were certainly not even the first punk band. They just popularized the movement. Dont know why he called them that
Lemmy taught Sid to play, he was a very quiet, shy and gentle young lad. Matlock wasn’t punk enough for the Pistols.
Sid actually took a lot of speed, stayed up all night and learned the Ramones album.
SID VICIOUS THE GREAT LOOZER
Best band ever. KhaOs!!!
Nevermind The Bollocks is a great album but I think that it would have been better if Glen had stayed in the band. I prefer the early demos.
you should do a bass habits video on playing in Rich Kids On LSD
Play Belsen in the winterland concert, Sid played well
Submission's bass line is quite interesting, IMHO.
Great Matlock
Would love to see a bass habits of Robert Trujillo Or of Tom Araya please
Tom Araya? Open E, especially live
Doug Pinnick of King’s X should be next!
I'm a big fan with a huge collection, I've met glen and John seen them 6 times live on reunion tours, I did hear belsen demo sid did play reasonable, but live he was very basic, glen was a strong bass player, Steve a great guitar player, Paul heavy drummer, John witty and very intelligent, with a unique voice, love this band. Sid during usa tour simply did not play a note,at dallas, baton rogue he was out of tune winterland he manages a few bass lines.
Steve played the bass on the album
Great stuff as always. Request for Tommy stinson of the replacements please
He's like the Reverse Carlos D
the bass on album is buried just like the ny dolls album’malcom m’🎸
I find that those demos with Matlock playing bass sound 'less like' the Sex Pistols than the versions on the album. Maybe it's just because that's the version we're used to.
Exactly right. Steve played no-nonsense, bare bones bass on the album. Thats why it has such an impact.. Glen was great, but too "pop-ish" for that..
The Ramones are the grandfathers of punk
I had the fortune to attend the infamous Sex Pistol's 'Shoot out in Texas' at the Longhorn ... excellent time ... I would like to put in my two cents relating to one of the more popular bits of Pistols' misinformation ... Sid Vicious never played bass ... just "air guitar" ... well ... I could plainly hear all three of the band's instruments playing ... including the bass ... Sid certainly, was nowhere near a Tal Wilkenfeld, John Entwhistle, Bill Whyman, John Paul Jones or even a Glenn Matlock ... but I must admit he was doing a respectable job that evening of keeping time with Paul Cook ... Steve Jones was doing a great job of feeding off the two of them ... while John Lyden was doing Johnny Rotten ... note wise ... who knows ... who cared ... Sid could play bass ... barely ... (:))
Steve played bass on the album and said he did a simple pattern. The album is sound though.
Is it far fetched to hope for another Sex Pistols album at some point in time?
U can listen to a good band in the meantime ❤️
Chriss spedding played all the imyerments om the bollocks.
SiD does not play on any tracks on the never mind the bollocks album, it's Steve jones who plays bass.
How to Sound like Sid Vicious:
1.) Unplug your bass
How to sound completely ignorant........say a coment like that
Hate to break it to you, but Johnny and Steve used to unplug Sid's bass from the amp during live shows because no bass sounded better than his playing and he was usually so strung out that he didn't notice anyway.
@@chipmartin7608 hate to break that particular myth for ya just listen to most of the live gigs they have on utube and my point is proven.......he's not fantastic but he didnt have to be and he was still learning....both our points of view are null and void when the evidence is right there for anyone
@@chipmartin7608 The last show wounds the best because you can hear the bass. Sid could play the root notes just fine. Melodic bass lines do not work with Pistols songs.
@@chipmartin7608that's only partially true. If Sid was whacked, then Steve would make sure his bass was unplugged. If Sid wasn't whacked (usually only when Nancy wasn't around), then his bass would be left plugged in.
The irony is that the Steve Jones basslines fit the Pistols music rather better than Matlock's, and were probably more influential. Jones's lines are simple and direct, and they do indeed reinforce the guitars, whereas Matlock, in the McCartney tradition, is always looking for countermelodies and little melodic phrases that call attention to the bass but dilute the impact of the songs. The better player isn't always better for the song.
Spot on! They do actually dilute the songs..
Very intelligently and articulately put, good sir.
Nailed it - root notes drive the songs home. Melodic bass lines make Pistols sound soft.
it doesn’t matter that sid viscous can’t play bass this guy has influenced so many bass players just as influential as paul mccartney and jaco.
Can I have some of what yer smokin' bro? Jeez
@@careful__Icarus i mean what i’m smoking is some jeter juice lol
Sid was very sticky
HA yeah right
@@antonyberry1632 nah it’s true all this guy needed was confidence to still be talked about to this day
IGGY POP Is the Grandfather of PUNK! STEVE JONES PLAYED MOST OF THE BASS YES YOU GOTIT RIGHT
They are so not the grandfathers of punk!!! 😮
An episode about PIL's Jah Wobble would be waaaaay more interesting than this.
Ok but not grandfathers of Punk. Velvet Underground, MC5, even the Ramons did it before.
even though sid will always be my idol, he was shit at bass and glen matlock was great and also a nice guy
Biggest mistake they ever made losing Matlock One of rocks great What Ifs..
He was always washing his .... feet?? 3:04
He had a 'little' quirk and was always washing his feet in the sink.
At least he didn't wash his little quirk in the sink.
You can hear Sidney here:

They shoulda fired malcom and kept glenn , but oh well ..
Matlock is a total Hero! I wish they had skipped the Poser....
I once heard Sid Vicious describe as a "beautiful mess" 😄
Glen Matlock is one of the greatest bass players around , the Spunk bootleg is how Never mind the bollocks should have sounded . He also played bass with the Faces when they toured a few years ago , without Rod 🤦♂️x
Uhm, no. Steve's straight forward bass on Bollocks fit like a glove.
And when Pistols reunited, Matlock played straight forward without being fancy and even used a pick. So there
Glen was and is a great player ,he held the pistols together ,you need different personalities in a band not two stars like sid and John at once 🍀🇬🇧👍
How about Ronnie Lane? Been awhile since I asked
Jones played more bass than anybody.
Exactly - typically concisely and tightly, too.
