I had a lot of people telling me I should adjust my bass higher when I started learning blitzkrieg bop but I’m 6’2 and I don’t think many people know the ramones style. I also got a lot of criticism on using a pick on bass😂 I told them this is how Dee Dee plays and to fuck off
I picked up bass out of necessity because I couldn't make midi bass sound good, and my band already had 2 other much better guitarists than me. I ended up liking it more than guitar and around the time I realised that, I broke both my arms so I was pretty much forced to transition to bass. Haven't looked back since.
I was never that great with guitar solos and was always first to volunteer as bassist during jams. After a while I decided guitar strimmer find it hardest to get into bands any way, so I started answering bassist wanted adverts.
I've loved the Ramones for 40 yrs and years ago I'd heard people say " Ramones songs are easy". Eff that, downstroking like that for 2 minutes alone at that speed is hard!
Because off Dee Dee I changed as a child from playing saxopone to bass guitar I learned playing with listening and learning every song on the first album where you can hear only bass and drums ( and Joey's singing ) on the left speaker.. and guitar on the right side.. so I I turned everything open to the left ( maybe it is vice versa .. check it out on the original, not the remastered version of the album ).. He was the one I was waiting for.. And off course RAMONES too.. When he left and the first time I went to see the band with CJ, I stoodin front if the stage, my usually place to go crazy when THE RAMONES played live.. I was so nervous.. and then BAM YES this one could not be more perfect.. CJ RAMONE blew my mind and Off course I was an instant fan from the first note he played on stage in Deinze/BELGIUM at BRIELPOORT.. and here I am.. still Ramones fan.. still DEE DEE RAMONE fan.. still CJ RAMONE fan.. ROCK ON 👊👊👊
For quite some years Deedee was endorsed by ESP. He had a yellow one with a red dragon on it and a bright orange with a black spider on it. This was from the mid-eightees 'till he left the band.
I have to split hairs a little bit with you on number 5. While it is true that Dee Dee stays with Johnny, there are times when he will play an "inverted" bass line. For instance, Beat on The Brat. Johnny starts low and goes high whereas Dee Dee starts high and goes low. Other than that, you are spot on with this video. I especially agree with t#4 and think most people don't bring up the 1/4 note at the end/beginning of the measure.
All summer 1980 I drove a combine on my uncle's farm and he had an 8-track player. I had the Ramones road to ruin and I played that eight-track all summer everyday. I loved that time of my life thx to the Ramones.
Would like to see a video about Ian Hill and a video about Cliff Williams. I see them often cited as simple but I think they don’t get enough credit for the sound they provide they’re band mates
Ramoes significa tocar lo que te gusta sin importar lo que piensen de ti y Dee Dee era un claro ejemplo de ello. Excelente video como siempre!! Saludos desde Costa Rica!!
I see them on the 80's, or 90's in Mexico city. It was a tide band, Dee Dee through me his pick twice but i can't never cached, I was to far, they play the full set of them songs, what always alive, what I know from hart and they played 1:20 second early they play super fast. i was amazing. grate times .
There are a few songs on the first record where the guitar goes up a forth while the bass goes in the opposite direction. It’s a cool little technique. Cool vid!
Absolutely brilliant! Dee Dee Ramone is an inspiration, and I'm obsessed with perfecting the classic downstroke technique,so this information is beyond valuable! Thank you so much for sharing!
While I knew that these guys were known for their simplicity. I didn’t realize that they were so devoted to this style, to the point where they wouldn’t change their amps. It really puts things into perspective. Very informative video. I find your content very useful.
I was lucky to see the Ramones at the Stone Pony ( not that big a club) around 1984...Wow! Sheer power! Also saw Black Flag, Minutemen, Meat Puppets in various clubs in the early 80s. (Flag stayed a weekend at the house I lived in due to a busted u-haul trailer). Those bands put their energy into their shows. Off-stage they were all very mellow, thoughtful, down to earth people.
Great content as always!❤ I used the tips you provided and it made a big difference in my approach learning and performing this song. I wanted to thank you and tell you about how your tips helped. I started playing bass when I was 15 using a pick that was around 1985. As I went along learning some songs and playing in bands around 6 years pick playing I slowly started playing finger style. For no other reason than it felt more natural for me to play finger style. I wanted to do a bass cover video of a Ramones song and it just didn’t sound right to my ear me playing finger style. It had to be in the Dee Dee style of pick playing. It was very difficult at first. My ear told me Dee Dee was a fierce down picking maniac. I never tried to play Ramones song or any punk songs. So who would know these things, Paul De Bello! After watching your video…several times. I picked Spider man & I wanna be Sedated and practiced using your tips. Took me some time my friends. Sedated came together and I made the video with help from a pro drummer friend. I’m still working on Spider Man. I really enjoy your videos! Thank you Paul De Bello for helping me along my bass journeys!
Johnny Ramone actually does play arpeggios but only very occasionally, most notably on Pet Sematary (Dee Dee actually had to show him how to play it and he struggled quite a bit, at that point Dee Dee was a far more technical guitarist than Johnny ever was).
Dee played ESP basses for the last couple of years he was in the band. Mostly the orange spider bass (essentially a P bass copy) and he also used an ESP Thunderbird copy. I even remember seeing him use the Thunderbird copy on a couple of live TV performances (where they actually played...not playback).
I have been a metal bass player most of my life but enjoyed some Ramones now and then. Rockaway Beach comes to mind as some Lake Erie friends named a beach on the Peninsula ............... Ya guessed it lol.
Way to give Dee Dee his due respect. Nothing wrong with 8th notes and playing the root. I am loving this series. How about one on Adam Clayton? He is another underrated bass player.
I used to play their songs all the time and I think there are some few hammer-ons in some songs like "I don't wanna walk around with you", at least in the lower tone demo of the song on radiocity music hall, and/or either hammer-ons or slides in their classic trademarked small 1 fret note changes like doing F#-> G a bunch of times in various songs like "carbona not glue" Also yeah, like you mentioned, in a lot of the early songs i think he plays on a higher octave than the guitar in many songs like "beat on the brat", "chainsaw", "you're gonna kill that girl", etc but "blitzkrieg bop" is on the same octave i t hink
My favourite instrument is a 25-30 (I'm getting old and can't remember dates) year old Squier P-Bass, it's never had a case or bag until recently so it looks awful but sounds amazing. I like to think Dee Dee would approve.
Thank you for making these videos! It’s great for a amateur player like myself. Could I request Eric Avery please? I realize you probably get a ton of requests but just putting it out there. Thank you
He also hardly ever played the low E string. Usually when Johnny plays an A chord, DeeDee plays the high A note. Same for all the low notes (E up to B and sometimes up to C# like in Sedated). That's how you get that buzzing wall of sound too.
Very good analysis as always, Paul. But one thing is not entirely correct. Dee Dee Ramone played Fender Precision bass most of the time. But in the last few years with the Ramones (1988/89) he switched to ESP. First Precision-like ESP basses, but also a Thunderbird copy of ESP, albeit with a Precision pick-up. Besides, the band didn't like that bass that much. Therefore, the new bassist C.C. went with old traditions and again used a white Fender Precision Bass.
Cool video- but there are actually a couple of more interesting bass songs on that first Ramones album-like "I don't want to go down to the basement". I still am in awe of the downpicking all the time, as I use mostly my wrist when I pick play, but using only down picking is painful.
In my opinion, Dee Dee was one of the best bass players of all time. The job of a bass player (also my opinion) is the be the glue between the drums and the guitar and if the music/song needs the bass should be a right fist right in the face that just keeps coming. He did all that all the time, he did the job the band and music needed. Was he the most technical bass player? Hell no, but imagine how The Ramons would have sounded if Victor Wooten was handling the bass, it would be a bad joke. Nothing against Wooten, he is amazing. But not the right person for the job. Also, Dee Dee was great as a songwriter, a lot of The Ramons best songs were written by Dee Dee, and with that a few of the best rock songs of all time.
As a Black Metal bass player, I´m disappointed I can´t adapt Dee Dee´s way of playing only downstrokes..to many 16th notes that would destroy my wrist. I like how Dee Dee, despite the simplicity of the Ramones, did NOT just follow the guitar riffs of Johnny but had some good variations instead. Best to hear on midtempo songs like 53rd and 3rd for instance
Paul your video are top class, but I'll never forgive you having cut off exactly before the chorus of Rock 'n Roll High School at 03:45 ;) Such a coitus interruptus
I'm about to start playing bass in a Punk Rock band and I would like to know the gauge of the pick used by Dee Dee. If someone could tell me it would be very helpful. Thanks!
Love this video. And you’re right. They were about just doing it. They weren’t there to show off or prove they were the best players or band ever. They just played music and their music well. So many musicians today are about showing off and being macho about their talent but they never produce anything revolutionary nor that lasts. I very much respect early punk rock and how it and those band inspired many people even today. I’m trying to learn how to play bass and I’ll definitely have to try how Dee Dee’s technique when covering a song.
ok, ever since i started bass i only downpicked. its the easiest way to play bass, if you have atleast a bit of power in your arm. i never alternative pick. thats too much for my punk brain to take. Big love to Dee Dee !
Non sapevo che fosse il compositore principale - come non sapevo che Johnny usasse accordi in barré. Questo me l'ha fatto rivalutare, avevo sempre pensato che il compositore principale fosse proprio Johnny, e invece...

there way worse to even judge you for using a pick. and there missing out !! rip it up sir ! ;)
Sometimes I use fingers, sometimes I use a pick, but all the time it's a BASS. Do what you want do do mate, and bollocks to the critics!
I believe the best bass player is the one that picks up the instrument when no one else wants to and makes it apart of their universe!
I picked up bass out of necessity because I couldn't make midi bass sound good, and my band already had 2 other much better guitarists than me. I ended up liking it more than guitar and around the time I realised that, I broke both my arms so I was pretty much forced to transition to bass. Haven't looked back since.

Dee Dee also needs more respect as a songwriter as well. How about doing one on my hero Peter Hook? If you haven't done one yet.
agreed
PH +1 👍
Here for Hooky!
You should make a how to sound Paul de Bello
Hehe yeah. Pretty sure his guides on stuff not by other bassists are those.
Dee Dee is the why I picked up a bass
I've loved the Ramones for 40 yrs and years ago I'd heard people say " Ramones songs are easy". Eff that, downstroking like that for 2 minutes alone at that speed is hard!
It is extremely difficult to do it like Dee Dee does.
Because off Dee Dee I changed as a child from playing saxopone to bass guitar
I learned playing with listening and learning every song on the first album where you can hear only bass and drums ( and Joey's singing ) on the left speaker.. and guitar on the right side.. so I I turned everything open to the left ( maybe it is vice versa .. check it out on the original, not the remastered version of the album ).. Thanks for this. Dee Dee was a genius in his own way...... and a pure agent of Chaos. The first Ramones live album was a huge influence on me.
Ay
Incredible album. It’s no exaggeration on my part to say that it’s alive was life changing.
im here:)
For quite some years Deedee was endorsed by ESP. He had a yellow one with a red dragon on it and a bright orange with a black spider on it. This was from the mid-eightees 'till he left the band.
Blitzkrieg bop was the first song that I learned on bass, up to now I use it to warm my wrist. Nice video, thank you.
Same! 🤘 such a great warm up lol

Even Johnny Ramone said it once: "if you're waiting until you learn, you're gonna get old"
All summer 1980 I drove a combine on my uncle's farm and he had an 8-track player. I had the Ramones road to ruin and I played that eight-track all summer everyday. I loved that time of my life thx to the Ramones.
They were great live. My favorite band. Dee Dee had some good solo albums too.
Dude I was just thinking about Dee Dee's muddy sound. That's really good timing and before watching it I already know this is a good video \m/
Ramones are simplicity and perfection put together. The three guys functioned as one brain onstage.
Excellent music Doc!
Love the Ramones! Gabba Gabba Hey
Dee Dee was one of the best ever!!
Would like to see a video about Ian Hill and a video about Cliff Williams. I see them often cited as simple but I think they don’t get enough credit for the sound they provide they’re band mates
Love The Ramones Love Dee Dee RIP
RIP😇
Dee Dee was an awesome powerfully tight bass player.
Massive respect from me.😊
I honestly love your videos. Would be nice if you did a video on either the bassist for Royal Blood oooor Peter Steele from Type O Negative.
The Royal Blood bassist’s name is Mike Kerr and Paul did a video about him, if you haven’t seen it already then I recommend you check it out
I've learned all that just listening to the Ramones for yearssssss true love. excellent video
A triumph of attitude over ability. 💪
RIP Dee Dee. I saw them live 2 or 3 times in the 90s in Paris. Melancholic memories.

Talk about dee dee isnt about good or bad player , its about the soul & energy🖤
First rule is- The laws of Germany

Fourth rule is- Eat kosher salamis!
They’re doin they’re best they do what they can to get them ready for Vietnam
Commando involved again
So that’s what they’re saying.
Bet you didn't know I was a German kid
@@leahflower9924 How could i know that? I never met you in my entire life.
An amazing bass player and song writer too
Thanks So much. I Love Dee Dee Ramone.. I love his style. Awesome!
No solo, no arpeggio, no riffs, no pedals, no slide, no slap, no hammer on, no bending, praticamente un incapace. Un bravo incapace.

Best bassist ever imo. He's the reason I started playing 🤘

I’m really enjoying your videos. You should do a Robert Deleo video.
You should do a video on either Glenn Hughes or Roger Glover
You can't argue with success...
Way to give Dee Dee his due respect. Nothing wrong with 8th notes and playing the root. I am loving this series. How about one on Adam Clayton? He is another underrated bass player.
Another great video, Paul!!

Dont forget, dee dee plays his bass near the neck, sometimes bridge but mostly neck due to the really low straps

This is becoming one of my favourite series on RUclips. What bass players are planned for future episodes?
I'm about to start playing bass in a Punk Rock band and I would like to know the gauge of the pick used by Dee Dee. If someone could tell me it would be very helpful. Thanks!
Woo!
Any plans to do an episode on Rainey from Discharge?
Could you do tim commerford next? Or someone like flea
Hi. What pedals and strings are you using with your Precision Bass? What brand of strings used Dee Dee on his Basses? Thanks
You should make video about Tom Araya or Sting or Geddy Lee
I think the most influential was the sex pistols the kids today still talk about and listen to the music more than any other punk bands of the time
Ciao... Hai un consiglio sul tipo di corde da utilizzare per avvicinarsi al suono dei Ramones?
Dear Paul Del Bello, this is a request, can you make a video on How to sound like John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin? -Thank you
curious if anyone knows any more legendary downpickers? (apart from Hatefield) ????????
Chris squire / jack bruce / john entwistle anytime soon?
DEE DEE KING
dude can you please do a steve harris one?
Can we pleaaaaase get a video like this on Matt freeman lines? Early rancid...
Please do, Sir Paul McCartney please!
I looked up how to say 1234 in German just so I could sing along to today your love lol
Some Maby Graham perhaps?
I wished that there was something like this, but for guitar players
Ep 10 how to sound like sid vicious😂
yeah this is borderline.
I mean to sound like dee dee it's mostly, don't get good.
Be so wasted that the band unplugs your bass, and you don't even notice.
have no musical knowledge and pick up a bass
Yeah, forget about all the advanced stuff. Grab your guitar and rock out! It's all about attitude and speed.
What type of strings did he use, rotowound or Flats ?
Love this video. And you’re right. They were about just doing it. They weren’t there to show off or prove they were the best players or band ever. They just played music and their music well. Keep it simple.. Have your own style..sometimes you don't need to follow the rules to be a good bass player.
What pick do
Can u make a video on fleaa...☺
is it bad i already did all these things before watching the video lmfao
ok, ever since i started bass i only downpicked. its the easiest way to play bass, if you have atleast a bit of power in your arm. i never alternative pick. thats too much for my punk brain to take. Big love to Dee Dee !
