Work in the worst of elements and carrhartt has always been a comfort. Every winter breaking out the same old bibs and jacket seems like a hug from an old friend.
When they are new, it's one of those weird things where you both love it, and hate it because it hasn't been broken in yet. They make the best jackets.
@@idaholineman5788 I supposedly have one of the first ones to come in all black. The maintenance man was incredulous when I said I had one, let alone in black, because he had one of the first in my city, and they didn't sell black at the time. Mine is now grey from washing and I actually managed to wear it pretty far out, but it's still one of my favorite jackets. When he passed, he left behind a couple of bass pro shop gift cards. My parents gave them to me and my siblings to get something nice from him. I bought a black carhartt jacket. I had no idea the history of the name and the cultural impact that brand has. Now when I wear it, I can be reminded of my grandfather and feel a part of a large cultural movement. Thank you Paw Paw
Pump, you’re literally insane. I know the content was good but I just kind of got bored with all car stuff. This is fantastic and I know I speak for everybody when I say we love you and please keep doing this.
I have a tan Carhartt jacket that I bought in 2001 and other than the seam splitting on the inner pocket it (easily fixed) it looks almost like new. My favorite blue Carhartt overalls, on the other hand, I only know what color they once were because of my memory. They're mostly white with pale blue spots these days, but no rips! Good to see you doing your thing James. I knew that you had more in you than just car stuff. Looking forward to seeing what's next. 👍🏻
This is as good or better than anything you did at Donut. I never thought I would enjoy a video about a clothing brand so much. Thanks for telling their story, I was riveted!
I think the main “hate” from “soft hands” buying workwear was that it would drive up prices the same way it did with outdoor brands. What a lot of “hard hands” failed to realize was that the industry for Carhartt was already there so prices didn’t need to inflate for the demand. A lot of outdoor people saw rich folk wearing Patagonia and arc’teryx and knew it was just for the clout. That drove prices through the roof. It didn’t happen the same with carhartt because there was a massive surplus of cloths from decades past that became more popular than the new stuff. Rich city folk bought hundreds of dollar jackets from the 80s and 90s and the people who needed them for work were able to still buy a new jacket for an affordable price. It really was the perfect storm. I’m born and raised in Fairbanks Alaska and can say it has always been a staple of our lively hoods to have carhartt. It’s tough, warm, and you can wear it anywhere. Need to go chop wood and 4 but go to a brewery at 5, carhartt is there for both. Great video, looking forward to more
Well said. I was hanging out with my cousin last year and said “oh cool, new Carhart?” “no it’s a few years old” I was like “wow, you need to drag that behind your car to get that carhart patina”. But it made me realize, with so many people not wearing them as workwear like I typically do it means the used market is loaded with great clothes that are already years old, but ready for a good decade of abuse by me! I love the look of a well used carhart, like you said, work at 4, brewery at 5.
Also, the “soft hands” didn’t raise the prices. The companies did but the “smooth brains” can’t complain about capitalism or they’d be commmies. The companies could be happy to have influencers wear their products while keeping it affordable for workers. Gotta make the line go up.
I think a concern that people have is that carhartt may go the way of Levi and focus on the fashion side and no longer make good workwear. Levi jeans used to be durable but now won't last a month in work conditions.
It definitely helped that it was a well-established brand with an already developed customer base for sure. Like Nike for example, a brand originally designed for sportswear, is now a fashion leader. Older "vintage" items can go for astounding amounts of money, but almost every clothing outlet, sporting goods stores, and even large resale outlets still carry the brand in bulk which stabilizes the prices. And even though pop culture has dug its claws into Nike, it still holds true to its roots as a sporting brand developing shoes, clothes, and equipment for sporting alongside their more fashionable selections.
carhartt is definitely not tough. A pair of overalls doesn't even last me a year anymore from them. The fashion craze destroyed the quality of Carhartt. Its all made extremely cheap now.
21:08 this to me is similar to why americans love their SUVs and pickups. From my experience many of these people (particularly older people) take some level of comfort in knowing that *on paper* their car is prepared for any scenario that they might get caught in.
We will always support you James! Always be you and NEVER let anyone tell you what you can or can not do. Can't wait to see what the future hold for you!

Hell ya
Work in the worst of elements and carrhartt has always been a comfort. Every winter breaking out the same old bibs and jacket seems like a hug from an old friend.
Until you realize you’re supporting a company that hates freedom and mandates experimental dangerous chemicals to be injected into employees bodies.
When they are new, it's one of those weird things where you both love it, and hate it because it hasn't been broken in yet. They make the best jackets.
Favorite one yet is called the full swing jacket. Try one on when you get a chance. Game changer if you use them for actual work in the winter
I worked security when I got it and that oversized coat was indeed a game changer.
The timeline is healing man. You know this is something special when the sense of community to support it is tangible. I rarely see so many upvotes consistently distributed across so many comments. Just happy to experience this with you guys
It took me a few days to get around to it carhartt and fashion both aren’t really my thing but this video format and education is something I’ve been missing for a long time
JAMESSS, I came to Donut because of you in UptoSpeed, and now im at Speeed because of YOU. WE LOVE YOU MAN
I was skeptical at first.
I am now 100% invested. This was incredible.
James and Speeed in my opinion are marketing genius, the writing is amazing I thought I could care less about brands untill you went into the history . I love it
Dude I can not believe this video never showed up on my homepage. Came here through the short just now.
Fantastic work James!
I just left a 10 hour shift at a warehouse that distributes Carhartt had a shit day and this is what I’m greeted with?!
It was perfect ❤️
Thank you for working that shitty nonsense so people have stuff.
I just bought a Carhartt hoodie sweatshirt for my kid last week. I felt like a bit of a poseur because I'm about as far away from outdoorsy or hard working as you can get, and he's going to be a freshman in college, so even less for him.
But this video made me feel better about my purchase. Just feeling like an unathletic, white collar guy like me can rep cool gear too makes me happy. Thanks, James.
Happy to help. Never too late to become more athletic tho…
thought you were a woman till I read the end😅
James, I’m not a fashion/clothing guy. I wear the same 5 outfits every week at work pretty much. But I just sat and watched this whole video with 100% attention. Keep being you man, you’re awesome and your style is awesome
Having the right host for show makes or breaks the show, James by far is the best RUclips host going he knows how to keep you interested sucks you’re gone from Donut but happy to be able to watch you do what you love man keep it up loving the new channel 👌🏻
James, I was sitting in the living room watching a thunderstorm outside. The kids said “dad, I just saw lightning!” To which I responded, “LIGHTNING-LIGHTNING-LIGHTNING-LIGHTNING!!!” 😂
Loved this episode on Carhartt!
This video is such a comprehensive love letter to fashion, design and its inextricable link to both the ordinary and the underground.
This is the story of so many companies, and he doesn’t miss a beat here
This has got to be my new favorite YT show. I love the "history of" type of shows. You do it well and I love the format and editing. This is great.
i can feel how passionate james is rn & i love the energy. cant wait to see where SPEEED takes us!
I bought my carhartt winter jacket in 1990 and have worn it every winter since.that’s 34 years! And the zipper is still perfect. No tares, pockets fully intact.
My dad bought me mine in ‘99. I still wear it. Not much wear and tear. And I’ve put that thing through a lot!
Still have mine from '79, no joke.
Im tearing up because James is back the way we all remembered him. But these are man tears. MAN TEARS.
SPEEED DEEEMON TEEERS
Shed a single thug tear

Dad is back. Never leave us again. Looking forward to going on this journey with you.
To hear this kind of "thanks for the come-up" is off the hook. You're more than welcome since your content is DOPE!!!
Leave it to James to bring hope and love through his videos. The nuances talked about in this video almost brought tears to my eyes. That last 3rd of this video is just pure art. Beautiful
Digging this Uptospeedishness but for brands outside the Auto world! Bravo boys!
When I was a junior in college, my grandfather passed away. He was a retired Navy SEAL, influential bass fishermen, and one of the best men I have ever known.
Just like the good old days of up to speed , great video , hope this channel keeps growing
Rebirth of a legend
He never died it the youtube channel he was in before that did😂
We'll call it prestige 😂
Definitely not what I expected the first video to be about.
But I am loving it, man!
Pump, you’re literally insane. I’m six minutes and 28 seconds into this video and I paused it just to say I absolutely love this direction you’ve taken I can’t wait to see everything else you do admittedly I kind of fell off of donut after a while.
“This is everything you need to know to get up to Speeed”…..
damn missed that!
Congratulations James!
this style of content is so fresh. it doesn’t even need to be about cars, u just know how to entertain the people. u doing it right
Love the research put into this video. Editing was great. I was impressed
James is dope! He could literally talk about anything and I'll listen.
Can't wait to see what the future hold for you!
dude, i’m so glad you actually get to do your own ideas and show your creative touch.
This video is massive! He is BACK! 🎉
Love the nod to Big Time too!

Loving how you have Nolans mustang alongside your golf.
Its a pretty wholesome detail.
Dude idk why I’m crying about Carhartt jackets on a Saturday with James ending monologue about the about of clothes and America. James we’ve been waiting for you man you’re a killer KILLER story teller and this is what you should be doing. Glad you’re back
Carhartt WIP has always been cool.❤🔥
Can we all just take a moment to acknowledge the amazing production value and research that went into this? Can't wait for all the future videos. Way to go, James!
I absolutely love how this is kind of like your up to speed videos that got me into donut to begin with. Please keep up this kind of format and keep adding in all your funny jokes and edits of movies and shows I love it.
It's better than the 4th of July and Christmas..... a new james speeed video
High praise
@SpeeedCo thank you for the countless hours of entertainment. Your videos helped me pass the time in the hospital. Also pretty pumped to have gotten a reply
I used to be salty about a bunch of white girls out wearing Carhartt beanies for fashion, while I’m out busting ass trying to keep my ears warm. Thanks brother for showing me what it means to come together.
Please please please promise us that we will forever get shows like this. I left donut when shows like up to speed, and science garage went away. So happy to see the return of such amazing content
The level of history behind this episode is just great, so much learned, fun watch, interesting topic. Just great to have the man back!
"When people are stripped of their private identities they develop huge nostalgia and nostalgia for the jeans and the Levis of the young today are the nostalgia of grandad’s overalls. His workclothes now become the latest costume." -M McLuhan
Just love sitting back and watching James talk as if he's reading to me a story book.
I work with homeless and Carhartt jackets and coveralls are like gold to them. Especially up here in the north where it can literally be life saving.
Sooo much information. Loveee it when people just condense information to bite size and in minutes, you know EVERYTHING about something. This is goood content. Make more stuuuff like this.
