Stussy started "streetwear"? For real Bro? You never heard of Karl Kani or Cross Colors? Streetwear was first called "urbanwear" remember, its not just stuff that migrated over... Kani and Cross Colors started in 1989 as urbanwear brands.. not a skate or surf brand that was later adopted into streetwear.. I dunno man.. "Streetwear" didn't even exist in 1989. I was there... LOL
It's insane that I have zero interest in street wear, sneakers or clothes in general but every one of these videos is completely engrossing. James' passion is infectious.
@@SpeeedCo You should do a video about how you got so clean and healthy. Give me a mention in the credits though (Andy Wood Ruff) - it's a surefire winner.

The last quote was special when you realized that this entire concept was a project by James in Donut, and just became his own brand out of passion. This entire concept is truly appreciated and I know that these videos and upcoming videos are WORTH watching. From Carhartt video to this, everything is a masterpiece. Hope that passion will continue to burn and inspire others to improve their craft and not to be afraid to show them who they truly are.
James has proven that the format for Up to Speed can work with anything. I knew nothing about Stussy until 30 minutes ago. The fact that we can now have Up to Speed on anything from Vans, to Mooneyes, to KFC is astounding. Keep it up, James. Can’t wait to learn about something new in a few weeks
Yeah, do snap-on. Talk about how their current business model is more like a bank, selling high interest loans in the form of tools to their franchise owners. Talk about how they victimize US veterans because of the loan guarantee, and sell routes that they know won't work or are over-saturated.
Man this new channel you've started and the direction you've chosen to go with it is downright superb. Way to stay true to what got you here while simultaneously broadening your horizons. Just so legit man. Well done.
I know you're kinda just making the videos you want to make at this point, but thank you for making the types of videos I want to watch. The episode I've been waiting for. Spent all my teen years (80s/90s) in Champaign-Urbana IL, skateboarding, reading Thrasher and dreaming about the West Coast. This new kid came to my middle school. He had a west coast vibe but i think he was from one of the Carolinas. He had tons of Maui & Sons and gave me some shorts and shirts that didn't fit him anymore. This really changed my life. Having very little money, I made bootleg Vans (based off Payless shoes, i stitched my own Vans label to sew in) and Stussy shirts (acrylic and sharpie, wasn't as convincing but the shirts were damaged from skating). Nobody ever questioned if they were real. 12 y.o. and coming into my own and discovering myself through (real & homemade) clothes. Thanks for doing this James. Honestly some people wouldn't know the history of current streetwear if it wasn't for videos like yours.

I’m so happy that James left Donut and started Speeed. It’s a win-win for us and James. He gets to talk about his fave things and we get to know about Stussy, Carrhart and more

That outro track gave me goosebumps with the Speeed logo over the old stock footage. What amazing ability you guys have to capture emotion in film. Seriously love this channel and what you're doing.
I grew up and went to school in the town next to Laguna Beach, and my school had parts of Laguna. It cannot be overstated how popular and impactful Stussy was in that area. Learning to draw the logo, putting it on everything, wearing the garb, and just trying to be part of the brand was a huge part of my 1990-2000 school years.
Totally!!! love it! I was about to say the same but saw you already did! This channel will be much better as there are waaayy more topics to film about as there are no limitations to automotive. Smart move!

My man reaching over a million subs this quickly is one of the most deserved things I’ve seen. Leaving Donut was a risk, and would’ve been painful to see him fall off. Luckily, he’s the goat and that would never happen
I’m 41 and I’ve had stussy in my wardrobe since 1989, I’ve always had at least 3 stussy shirts or sweats since in rotation… it’s my favourite brand that I grew up
Ahhhhh! So dope to see this story! I got to be a part of the journey ‘94-‘96. Just a kid working as a color separator at Melmarc, the screen print shop in Santa Ana where Stussy printed almost all their tees at (they used Tee Jay blanks back then). I got to meet with Shawn almost every season, where he’d bring by a stack of Tshirt graphics which were black n white xerox copies of each design that were pasted on art boards, and his super clean handwritten notes on color callouts, outlines, pin lines, inlines, sizing notes, etc. Thinking back, it’s actually amazing that he could see all those color combinations in his head and call them out the way he did. This was before computers, so they were like a magical surprise when we printed the samples and saw what he had envisioned his head for each design. He’d drop so many gems of wisdom on me during our meetings, creative/artistic ones that still inform my process to this day! He even encouraged me to submit some designs as a freelance Artist. I sent in three and he bought them all. Still have a xerox copy of that $500 check! Much love & respect to SS for inspiring a young Samoan Artist kid to push the boundaries & expand my vision!

Glad to see you loving the new Speed project.
Hey James, just wanted to say loving the new videos and the same you, I used to just watch for cars but now I’m watching all these videos and enjoy learning about these brands because of your personality! Keep up the good work bro.
as a fellow surfer it’s good to see someone talking about how stussy use to shape boards. your average hype beast probably never knew he shaped boards back in the day just like how most don’t even know supreme and palace are originally skate companies. my dad had a few of his boards in his earlier years surfing, super cool designs definitely ahead of its time
@SpeeedCo i mean on a seperate note as I continue watching, learning all the history of it and hearing you explain it. Feels way more worth to pay for it.
I, much like some others may say in the comments section, have never heard of Stussy. I'd heard of Supreme (whose origins were briefly mentioned in the video), but only in passing. Throughout these 30 minutes, not only have I been informed, but it's in a fun and entertaining way. Proof, if proof be needed, that the "Up to Speed" format that I loved at Donut has a place that's well beyond cars. It helps that it's still being made and presented by James, whose infectious charisma has you enjoying every single minute. Amazing stuff, keep it up!
This was one of my favorite brands as a teen in the 90s. Notoriously hard to find in rural Texas, and being different was always my schtick, so I naturally gravitated to brands that nobody else seemed to know about. This video is a great rundown of the brand's history, and I learned a lot. Thanks for putting in the work on another kickass video.
James, thank you for these videos, they are amazing and full of impressive details. I currently work for The North Face in Mexico, and I’ve become a fashion enthusiast. Also, I own an E36, the car of my dreams. I realize the inspiration you’ve given me for over 5 years, from your videos at Donut to now with Speeed. Keep spreading that unique and unparalleled energy; you are special.

Loved your hilarious delivery with Donut, and will continue to follow ya with this new channel! 👊 Since you covered Carhartt (workwear, streetwear, high fashion) and now Stüssy (surfer apparel, streetwear, high fashion). I feel like Dickies would naturally be a great addition. Workwear, BMX/ stakeboard apparel, streetwear, and high fashion
Absolutely loving the content and creative freedom on this channel!!! Looking forward to when the "brand" becomes worth it, which it probably already is tbh!!!!

I’ve never seen your videos up until now looks like i was missing out lol but i gotta say i’m kinda new but not new to the brand stussy and its my favorite brand started collecting for about 4-5 years now and i enjoyed this in depth/ detailed video. Learn a lot from this and this made me appreciate stussy more seeing the OGs everyone started their brand right after stussy. It was an amazing story. You got my sub brother keep making more and you are hella funny too. Video slaps hard music and arrangements is sure lit! Keep it up 👍🏻

@@aaroncarmichael8263 20 more minutes😭
@@jkel16 20 more minutes and I get to clock out💀
I, much like some others may say in the comments section, have never heard of Stussy.
Thanks for taking the time to write this. It really means a lot.

I learn a lot of new things from every video you put out.
This platform is the Up To Speeed we didn't know we needed.
We have similar taste…
I swear bro the quality of your videos are probably the best in RUclips, so happy you left donut 🍩
James, I appreciate your talents and your favorites. You're the best for combining them and sharing it. Thank you!
Man mad respect for 21:42 I love the transparency with Donut and using it to your advantage. Bravo James.
I love how James have the passion to make me want to sit through a 30min video of something I’ve never cared about before! One of my new favorite channels!
Please keep making these types of videos! Watching and learning about the roots of these brands is super inspiring.
Videos like these make me excited to be a small business owner. Thank you for keeping me motivated James 🫡
Not gonna lie
I like the direction you're going with this channel more than the previous one👌🏼
Dude I’m so glad you’re doing this thang. Absolutely love your style and content and I’m happy you have the power to control what you do. Thanks to you and your crew for keeping it entertaining. Don’t rush the process and do what brings you passion. It will definitely bring the views.
Loved your hilarious delivery with Donut, and will continue to follow ya with this new channel! 👊
Since you covered Carhartt (workwear, streetwear, high fashion) and now Stüssy (surfer apparel, streetwear, high fashion).
This is probably my favorite video on this channel so far and that’s saying A LOT 👏🏽
The quote at the end about not starting with brand is so good!
I do GENUINELY LOVE how we're all getting to learn about James's other interests! This is what passionate creation is about. Learning about this cool niches that I would have no idea about 👌🏿👌🏿👌🏿.
