Apparently Parappa was going to have his own unique levels in ujl that actually made sense in the context of his cutscenes the picture of him and Pj was apparently from his scrapped level where they would sell milkcan T-shirts to promote the band. That’s just what I’ve been told
The unused mysterious screenshot could've taken the role of Parappa's storyline, as Parappa and PJ both walked out in the cutscene "On Wednesday," and as such, could have pointed to an alternate storyline with Parappa selling merch and other promos for the concert. This is a very early version of the build, so in theory, they could've been planning an alternate storyline, right?
I always thought the lyrics in Stage 5 were awkward, makes sense they're lyrical replacements. Its almost surprising considering how well done the island-hell replacement is.
They're awkward and just generally crazy in all versions. Also, they're wrong. They're NOT chopping the tree down for fun, they're chopping it down to make a new guitar for Lammy.
The fact that so many pre-rendered cutscenes were changed only 17 days before release, makes me believe that they probably made the changes ahead of time, and just hadn't implemented them yet.

I prefer PTR2 out of the three games the most due to the songs and graphics, but Lammy is better in some regards as being the hardest and having the most content out of the 3.

Very good vid! Um Jammer Lammy is among my favourite games of all time. It breaks my heart whenever I see people hate on it because they play it on bad set-ups with input lag. The freestyling mechanic is one of the coolest features that I wish more rhythm games would adapt. Could take music games to the next level imo. Sadly even UJL didn't really tell players that it even exists or how it works. Took the community years to even figure it out in depth. Also the cutscenes have possibly the best comedic timing and insanity I've seen on the PS1. Love the art style too. Love everything about it. So again thx for the vid. It made my day

Parappa and Pj are holding shirts because this is an unused stage for Parappa where they try to sell merchandise for the big concert that happens on stage 7.

The "Does anyone know more about this?" Screenshot has the note area in it too! You can barely see the outline of the area and the Lammy on the top-left corner is Lammy's icon (the icon indicates who is signing in the moment), from that we now know that we were supposed to sing with Lammy (?).

the reason PaRappa can’t be seen played with Chop Chop in the actual game is because the level takes place in lammy’s head, so it only applies to her, and not the others.
Even in the north american release I could tell Teriyaki Yoko's island was some kind of afterlife. I mean, you play for an audience of zombies with 2 grim reapers on the stage, and their eyes are clocks....

I think the removal of Hell had more to do with upsetting parents and religious groups than the ESRB rating, since I can think of at least a handful of E games that mention Hell and/or take place in it (Sonic and the Secret Rings, OnTaMaRaMa, etc)
Some things to mention about the censoring. Obviously religious references in Parappa the Rapper games are usually censored out since the developers were worried that the religious references would affect the age rating (which I’m still not sure if it would). This firm of censorship is actually my favorite since instead of just cutting out the “offensive” product they straight up made new cutscenes and everything! The reference to chopping down trees was taken out most likely because (without an official license) chopping down trees in general is illegal. It would’ve been seen as if woodchuck (don’t remember his name) was endorsing an illegal act which is obviously not too good for a game made for young children (although originally Rodney Greenblatt was trying to aim for a teenage audience). Some more interesting tidbits. There’s an Um Jammer Lammy album that has background music from UJL, but new lyrics from Parappa called “Ice Scream”. It’s mostly aimed at young children, so there’s lyrics along the lines of “brush your teeth twice a day”, but there are also some references to things like guns and drugs specifically stuff liked Parappa asking kids to report other kids who might be selling drugs at school, which can feel a little strange at times. My favorite of the songs “Why?” Which is based on Yoko’s stage has Parappa asking tame questions like “why is the sky blue”, but ends on a pretty depressing with “and why do people die”. Seriously if you’re a Parappa the Rapper fan and haven’t heard these songs I HIGHLY recommend you look them up on RUclips! Also currently on RUclips are fully translated episodes of the Parappa the Rapper anime by my brother and I! The anime came out some time in between UJL and PTR2, and was a financial failure despite having 2 seasons. It also used to air during a time when baseball was on air, so Japanese audiences would normally flock to that rather than the anime. The main reason why PTR’S anime was never localized was due to licensing issues. Fuji TV wanted to own the anime due to the fact that they were airing it, while Sony wanted to keep the licensing since PTR as a whole was owned by them. Sadly, due to this issue the anime never made it to America.
Stage 1 is Only for Lammy, Stage 1 is not available for Parappa, Team Mode, and Battle Mode. Stage 1 is available in Arcade for Parappa, Team Mode, and Battle Mode.
The picture with PJ and Parappa might have been one of Parappa's stages, before they decided "Screw it, put him in edited Lammy stages" If you didn't know, after you complete Lammy's story, you unlock Parappa's, which has new cutscenes that completely make no sense when you transition from the cutscenes to the actual game, that's because of storage constraints and they probably didn't have enough space to add in new models, animations, and more voices(some of his actual levels DO have changed lyrics, but a few of them have the opponent singing the same stuff that they do in Lammy's stages)
I hope you come back to this game because 2 years ago (about a year after this video) Rodney Greenblat uploaded a video early in development of all the cutscenes (except 1, 3, and 7's), and every single character is voiced by Ryu Watabe. I do mean every single one. Lammy, Chief Puddle, Teriyaki Yoko, you name it, he temporarily voice acted them. All of them.
I always thought the “Joe Chin Guitar’n’table” controller (yes, really) that they used in Um Jammer Lammy NOW! was hilarious, especially the fact that they mapped a freaking turntable, on a PLASTIC GUITAR, to what would be the r button on a PlayStation controller, then called it the “chin switch.” Edit: They mapped what would be the l button to a slider on the neck of the guitar and called it the “joe switch.”

The picture with PJ and Parappa might have been one of Parappa's stages, before they decided "Screw it, put him in edited Lammy stages"
If you didn't know, after you complete Lammy's story, you unlock Parappa's, which has new cutscenes that completely make no sense when you transition from the cutscenes to the actual game, that's because of storage constraints and they probably didn't have enough space to add in new models, animations, and more voices(some of his actual levels DO have changed lyrics, but a few of them have the opponent singing the same stuff that they do in Lammy's stages)

I hope you come back to this game because 2 years ago (about a year after this video) Rodney Greenblat uploaded a video early in development of all the cutscenes (except 1, 3, and 7's), and every single character is voiced by Ryu Watabe. I do mean every single one. Lammy, Chief Puddle, Teriyaki Yoko, you name it, he temporarily voice acted them. All of them.
Parappa and Lammy teaming up/going against each other would have been pretty cool to see.
I always thought the “Joe Chin Guitar’n’table” controller (yes, really) that they used in Um Jammer Lammy NOW! was hilarious, especially the fact that they mapped a freaking turntable, on a PLASTIC GUITAR, to what would be the r button on a PlayStation controller, then called it the “chin switch.”
Edit: They mapped what would be the l button to a slider on the neck of the guitar and called it the “joe switch.”
