I like that Jonathan Ross let a random dude from the internet into his house, get completely hammered with him (1:50) and then let him take his arcade machine apart
Jonathan Ross, for international audiences, is like the Jay Leno or David Letterman of UK tv. He was once the highest paid talent at the BBC before being pouched by a rival TV company. He’s a notorious geek, collector, used to have a film review show on the BBC (he gave Spirited Away FOTY and thus got me into Ghibli) and his wife is a writer-producer responsible for films like Kick-Ass and Stardust.
Um Jammer Lammy to me is one of those weird little thresholds we pass through in life. For me, it was finally having my own things and being able to pick and buy and rent and choose whatever games and movies I wanted. I was in a household with 3 boys and I was the youngest. So while it always showed me cool movies, shows, and games that I still treasure today, I never got to discover things on my own out of my own curiosity. I was nothing more than pretty much a recorder for my older brother's discoveries. Then around the late 90s, my brothers were older, had their own friends, and were chasing girls, and got jobs and cars. So they were never really home like they used to be. So I started having free rein of the PS1, and rentals and music etc. That is when I started discovering things on my own volition. And that's where Um Jammer Lammy and things like it kicked in. I would never have been allowed to rent it or buy it or anything, because that isn't something my brothers found interesting. But I loved it. I remember a few years later when I got a job and was old enough, I also got PaRappa the Rapper. That's why I say Lammy is like this little line I crossed into independence in terms of being able to discover things on my own and not being at the mercy of older siblings.
Wait. This was legit Johnathan Ross from the UK panel show fame? I was thinking it just had to be a common name, then I saw the man himself. What a random world.
I'm legit crying tears of joy. A long, agonizing chapter in the Parappa fandom is finally coming to an end. It's been a struggle, but soon, the game will be able to be experienced by everyone!
Lmfao this sounds something like when the last unreleased parrapa thing gets found, all the fans will randomly die instantly like a kind of twisted prophecy
Oh my god? How did you even find out Jonathan Ross purchased this? In any case, this is why software and video game preservation is so important. Thank you for sharing this with us. What a wonder.
More amazing than the lost machine found is the fact you can just email Jonathon Woss, with 903 subscribers, and suddenly become friends with him and hang out with him in his home!?
Good Guy Jonathan showing how its done , instead of hoarding a machine to rot away with no one to preserve it. And of course good work everyone who helps archive this almost lost piece of media
I would never in a million years would have thought Jonathan Ross would be the person who owns possibly one of the last existing um jammer lammy machines. That is so fucking random lol.
Parappa history has been made, Um Jammer Lammy NOW! has now been found! I really hope we can rediscover this important piece of Parappa history together, and discover not only what this game has for us to discover, but also be able to enjoy this game with each other!
Really, the past couple of years have been an absolute goldmine for lost media. So many things we once thought lost to the ages are slowly but surely being found, one by one. What a time to be alive.
We finally found a working Um Jammer Lammy NOW! arcade and this is definitely going down in history. But sadly, we will probably never get our hands on the prototype version of the game. You know, the one that didn't had "NOW!" in his name. There's maybe even more unseen stuff inside of it, which is so damn frustrating. Much love Yockey, and I can't wait to see more of it!
I was obsessed with this game for years back in the day and I still play it occasionally. I've known about this machine since 2005 or so and I never thought I'd see footage like this.
Talk about burying the lede. "Oh, by the way, Johnathan Ross bought the last one in existence so I hit him up and here we car jammin' on the arcade game" Like no big deal. haha! Nice.
I never knew about this parappa arcade port. When i think of parappa oddities would be the VHS collection of the parappa show, and a toaster that makes art on the toast. And those go for hundreds of dollars, i wouldnt want to know an auction price on an um jammer lammy arcade
Awsome ! it feels great seeing finally new cutscenes after much time. Also the Parappa lore just expanding like that just makes my heart pound. Thank you.
I find it absolutely insane that in the same week I started playing Um Jammer Lammy for the first time, the arcade port gets dumped and preserved. Thank you so much for your hard work and this video, Eric! EDIT: Finished watching the video and I just wanted to add that I wish you the best of luck with dumping the ROM logic data!
do yourself a favor and play the PAL version if possible, it's superior in a few ways including having uncensored content that was censored in other regions like U.S
Wanna know something cool? The mythical Parappa Stage 1 is playable in this version. An unfinished version still exists in the PS1 version, and the song can be heard in its entirety in the Soundtrack.
Here's what's weird. I'm 40, from England, and Jonathon Ross has been on TV in some capacity for the entirety of that it feels like. In the early days, I just had the opinion of "he's alright... he's not my favourite, but I don't mind seeing him on my telly". If someone were to say "National Treasure", back then I woulda been like "who? This guy?" But then, as time has gone on, I've appreciated him more as a host and personality. The dude is funny. And then, all of a sudden, I see late night Channel 4 shows about the history of Japanese toys and popular entertainment media... which is basically a one-man show hosted by someone who I can see has an absolute passion and knowledge for the subject. And then I see him talk "World of Warcraft" with a couple of his guests on his talk-show, and Vin Diesel kinda replies like "yea alright, like _this guy_ knows about WoW...", to which Ross replies with "yea, I don't know _much about it..._ but I do know my wife has a Spectral Tiger Mount...". And Vin's eyes light up like "this dude is for real." And then... I'm into comic books... and guess who's written comic books? Like... NOTHING surprises me any more about Jonathon Ross. He is someone who, over time, I've found I've more in common with as a long-time nerd, than his celebrity status would suggest, and someone who I'd love to sit down and nerd out with.
What an awesome dude johnathon Ross is. I saw a great video of his toy collection recently and he did a great documentary on Steve Ditco a few years ago
This is so awesome!!! As a fan of the series, I've always been fascinated by the arcade version but only ever seemed to see ONE picture of it. The one with the screen showing Ma-San with her hand in front of her face. I can see it in my mind's eye now.
When I was getting into Parappa a few years back, I always wondered what would come of the arcade cabinet in the future. This video is a blessing, thank you for all of your work ^^
If I could, I’d open my own gaming hotel! Yes I know there’s one over in The Netherlands and also one somewhere in Asia (probably Hong Kong, Taiwan or Macaw) but I’d love to see a gaming hotel here in the UK: a hangout where likeminded gamers can enjoy 80s, 90s and 2000s video games together, each console given the proper maintenance needed to keep functioning and plenty of arcade games common and rare as well! Also, I’d provide the hotel room TVs with free-to-air channels from other countries including RTÉjr (Ireland), Gulli (France) and Kika (Germany) and even include a selection of Netflix and Apple TV+ original movies and shows guests can stream at no extra cost! (At the turn of the decade my local train company had Prime Video programming available to stream for free via the onboard wifi!)
So happy to see this search come to fruitition after so many years... I remember seeing this info YEARS ago and kept checking the lost wiki forums for updates, but no avail until this year~

i love this kinda shit man. random celebrity has it, you reach out, he says yeah fly over here, and he lets you document and back it up. what a world.
Holy moly, I knew Jonathan Ross was into collecting geek stuff, but it's super rad that he supports game preservation.

Interesting to know, that explains the “itv” logo on the top-right when he shows up
Even if the internals are decaying, the externals are in prime shape. It could be used as a museum piece.

That's a nice memory for such a game, specially with some songs that get that same feeling, like Got to Move! and Keep Your Head Up.
I loved reading your comment. I can really relate to it, and it's such a neat feeling for sure.
It's so cool to have those memories attached to the game.
