- These are the earliest versions of the cut scenes for Um Jammer Lammy that I received on VHS. It’s fun to see my first version of Lammy that was eventually rejected. I agree that the later red haired version was better, but I think the pink curly version was more lamb-like. Also the first look at the hell level cut scene, later removed for the US version. The Ma-san library scene is VERY weird! Enjoy! Thanks to Reel Revival Film for the great video transfers.

If you don't know who Ryu Watabe he did the voice's of Ma-san, Captain fussenpeper and Joe chin, I like Captain fussenpeper he sounds funny and is funny to me
Jack Smash is the agent for teriyaki yoko he only appears in stage 6 if you still dont understand is hes the pumpkin dude

I love how before, ma-san and Katy weren't late and had their own adventures, but instead, waited lammy to arrive in the show.
Also, seeing angry fussenpepper without its face red, is so cursed.
I really like the beta look, she immediately reads as a sheep in a way the final design doesn't. But I get their decision, final Lammy looks way more like a model alt-rocker girl than this cute fluffy punk.

I guess I’m the odd one out here, when I saw this I was like that’s a fine design but thank goodness they changed it. Beta design would have made a nice npc, side character or in the background imo. The focus on sharp shapes in the final design while rounding off the other ends just has an iconic feel to it, and the colors are absolutely better. Also, I dislike how much empty space is on the sides of the head in the beta design. I will concede the final design actually looks like a deer instead, but given how abstract PaRappa designs are I don’t really care about that anyway.

It's so cool seeing this early design of Lammy, I recognize her from the concept art! Though I agree with you that I like her red hair in her final design, I like the curly pink hair since she looks more like a lamb.

funny how Captain Fussenpepper is the only character who maintained the same voice over versions
edit: after some searching, I found out that the guy who provided Fussenpepper's and Joe Chin's voice is Ryu Watabe, a bilinguish voice actor who also provides the voice of Chop Chop Master Onion and Ma-San, since he casts all four of these characters across the series, he must have entered game development early on to provide substitute vocals for all of the other characters
Pretty neat that the Milkcan commercial blurb at 0:33, while not in the final game, made its way onto the Milkcan Make It Sweet album.
Thats amazing. I'm so glad the "I guess I have no choice now" got changed to the Dojo Casino running Gag. That was a really iconic part of UJL
Also it's very weird to see these Cutscenes without the music since it plays such a big part in them on the final release.
Interessting to see that one of the Anime Soundtracks originated here.
I wonder why the scene with Katy already at the show got removed. But I guess it's because in the final game it is implied that Katy and Ma-san also had similar advantures to lammy at the same time. Maybe there were plans to expand on that and see what happend to them at that day...

i'm 19 years old and um jammer lammy was one of my favorite games as a child
it's really cool to see how a game that i really loved as a child and got me into music started

also gotta love how the parappa cutscenes have a higher framerate in these prototype cutscenes than they do in the game itself
Something I’m not seeing being mentioned is that this early design of Lammy actually reminds me of Paula. I wonder if this early design is what actually inspired her character. Nevertheless these earlier versions of the cutscenes are really cool. Especially with the early version of the “Leave it to Lammy!” jingle.

I absolutely love these early cutscenes! I can also tell that Ryu is providing the stand in voices. Seriously though, thank you so much for showing these, it really means a lot to us fans!
he also improvised for all songs in the parappa series and matsuura still has them according to ryu

I definitely like the final design better, but the old design definitely fits her name better, I think its interesting to look at unreleased footage of the game, considering the early shots and how different the designs are

Lammy’s old design was so cute 😭 The new one definitely fits her personality way better but the old one was a great character design too
It's interesting to see that the "teachers" for each stage already had their final designs, but lammy and a few others weren't quite as finalized here (apart from Rammy, who isn't shown at all. though i do wonder what Rammy would've looked like with Proto-Lammy's design, or at the very least what kind of color scheme they would've used)
The Rammy based off this design is actually shown in one of the Japanese guidebooks; specifically one that has a red cover with Parappa on it. Basically the same as beta Lammy but obvi b&w and with a spike choker collar

These ads are so cool and I think the voice acting adds to the charm. Also nice to see more pictures of Lammy’s old design, it really feels that we almost got it instead of the one we all know and love now.
I hope we eventually get to see the alternative BAD/AWFUL versions of Always Love! eventually. It's so good to see something about this franchise after all these years

I loved them all, but Lammy especially is one of my favorite, favorite video games ever made, a game that I still keep coming back to again and again. So cool to get to see all of this behind-the-scenes stuff, thank you, Rodney!

I love this variation of Lammy. It seems like a completely different character as a whole and I like this one. Her “I guess I got no choice now” makes me laugh. I understand why the used Lammy is in the game because she fits well in the story and characters, but I would still like to see this Lammy used in other content under a different name, that’d be awesome.
I like how before the cutscene mouths were fully animated but probably changed because lack of memory space like how parappa’s cutscenes were stop motion frame rate
Now if Sony would just do an HD port of Lammy like they did Parappa 1 and 2, I'd feel like it's finally Lammy's year.

oh my god every thing is so different! Paul giving the ok hands, the different angry fussenpepper, different hell, mostly everyone is voiced by ryu i think even fussenpeppers voice is final, which is odd but whatever and the chainsaws even use... joe chins chains. But some characters i think look a bit more expressive
The voice acting is the best thing that I have ever witnessed in my life I would never believe I would hear something as phenomenal acting like this.

1:10 From the looks of it, Sunny (from PaRappa 1) was supposed to have a bigger role in Lammy's story, rather than PaRappa's.
I didn't even know she was supposed to be a lamb. She smiles too, instead of looking clueless. And the hell cutscene was actually fun, and made more sense than what they actually used.
Why did you make these games so damn weird? The concept was really esoteric, and then they modified it to be basically incomprehensible.

I feel like the "I guess I have no choice now" line would've worked best for Stage 6 since Lammy pretty much had no choice but to play in Teriyaki Yoko's concert to get back to where she was before.
And also since she had a real guitar
The pauses in the middle of the cutscenes make me think there were gonna be “IT’S PRACTICE TIME” moments like in Parappa 2
Been a fan for a long time but I'd recently shown (and then played) Um Jammer Lammy to my best friend and got into it and Parappa all over again, what a cool coincidence to see all this put up! Big fan of your stuff, I very much appreciate the uniqueness, style and... I'm bad at words sometimes, but the integrity? Like, how passionate you very obviously are and how you do things your way, with your sense particular sense of humour etc 👏

I actually have a headcanon that this'd be how her great-grandma from the 1920's/30's would look and she'd play the banjo with a hillbilly group. Also that Rammy's beta design (the same as Lammy's but obvi greyscale) would be her great-grandpa whose dream is to be in a Jazz band but for whatever reason he just can't. Idk I watched too much Cuphead shbfjnsbbbh

This is super cool Rodney, I've been a huge fan of Parappa, Lammy and your work in general for over 20 years now, and seeing stuff like this still excites me to a great degree. Amazing to see a channel with unseen Parappa content, consider me subsribed! Would've been nice with some videos about the obscure edutainment you did on CD-ROM as well now that everything has been archived online😄
