Dude you can TOTALLY assign weapon select in both directions on Saturn. It literally says 'Armschange (L)' and '(R)'
Came down here to say this, leaving satisfied.
I my self prefer assigning weapon on each button on PS version :D
You can even assign each individual weapon to one of the face buttons and just press the button you want which is quicker than cycling
Exactly!
@@scanlinesok This is indeed the best way to do it and you can fit all five weapons on the face buttons of the Saturn
God damnit I wish we’d get a badass old school shooter like this on current tech...4K, surround sound, overmodulated explosions, the kickass Japanese wailing guitar buttrock soundtracks from back in the day...and not some budget $20 download bullshit either...a true, full priced, real budget shooter. Not some ridiculous bullet hell or weird gimmick shooter either, to add to my list of demands. A new Thunder Force, or Gradius, Einhander, Axelay...whatever. I know it will never happen because it’s too expensive now, but a nerd can dream.
I would recommend Devil Engine. Creators took alot of inspiration from the Thunderforce series.
@@IndohNintendo I agree, Devil Engine is an excellent game. I even think some of the old members from Tecnosoft worked on this title.
@royalguard56, shut the fuck up, you stupid elitist prick, you, and everyone else that up voted your stupid ass comment! Touhou/Bullet Hell shooters exist precisely because of games like this and the sooner that you realize this shit, the better that you would be in your life.
@@paxhumana2015 Typical butthurt comment
Dariusburst Chronicles Saviours is as solid as a old school shmup, i recommend it.
I own both versions and have played the hell out of them. Overall, Saturn wins. However, PS1 does better in some areas: Cleaner texture mapping, clearer audio, added CG movies, more modes, and a higher resolution title screen. Saturn is the original version and has vastly superior overall graphics, as seen in areas like 9:44 and 15:00, more precise controls, and better options (Working Designs took away certain difficulty levels in the U.S. PS1 release). Fantastic game.
Why not combine both versions of the game?
@@paxhumana2015 Go ahead and create a combined version of the game and I'll play it. I'll wait. Just tell me when it's ready.
If you put your action replay cart into your 32x and insert the PlayStation disc in the Sega CD it will combine the Saturn and PlayStation version
I felt like.the ps1 version had smoother gameplay but the Saturn had better graphics
I also have both versions and I prefer the Saturn a thousand times. Better sound, better control and more on-screen effects. the psx intro is longer but boring, it doesn't incentivize you to enter the game to kill everyone. The extra effects made by vdp2 make the levels richer and faster in Saturn. Sound is lower on Saturn but much higher quality. On Ps1 it sounds like they're in a tube
Alright! ThunderForce! I still have ThunderForce 2,3,& 4(Lightening Force) on Sega Genesis. Great series.
I prefer the graphics of the Saturn, but +1 for the presentation on PS1 =)
The tone your description has concerning weapon selection is pretty condescending. Give your viewers the benefit of the doubt; the concept you're describing is not that difficult. But it's also incorrect. The Saturn *does* give the player the option to assign another button for weapon selection in the opposite direction. "Direct" control also exists in both versions, which maps a single weapon to a dedicated button, and the Saturn Pad is much better for this setup with its six-button layout.
Also it’s not like it’s been like that since the previous games and got used to it even though it’s not much issue for me I have not play Saturn but it’s nice that Perfect System streamline it on default settings
I don't think he intended to be condescending at all. However, you are correct -- the Saturn actually has the better control setup due to the 6 face buttons.
The "control situation" on the SEGA Saturn (SS) version is actually a non-issue after all... due to button remapping options.
The six face buttons available on the Saturn controller allows for each weapon to be assigned to a button specifically (via the Direct input option). This is almost instantaneous full weapon accessibility and it's even more convenient than toggling back and forth altogether. It's the way I've played this game since release.
NOTE: The LB/RB toggling back and forth 'can' still be done on the Saturn version too, via changing control options.
Here is a comparison which does justice to the Saturn version although the PS1 version remains completely correct with these additional modes, these musics, scenes of introductions, etc.
Thank you for your contribution !
Suas análises são perfeitas, meus parabéns 🇯🇵
Both great ports, but at the end, Saturn is the winner.
Saturn wins in graphics besides the transparencies. It would be interesting to see if any frame rate differences are apparent between the two.
Saturn has more slowdown, I can tell you that.
@@SEGAHEADDY But, like you said, it's still better.
@@SEGAHEADDY sometimes slowdown is a good thing when it came to these shooters.
@@crazyoldschool6342 Haha totally agree! Especially in a bullet hell shooter.
Should have called the Playstation version "Thunder Force V Imperfect System"
Ouch, dude. It's still a fine shmup. It's just *inferior* to the SS version.
Even though Saturn could indeed do ¨real¨ transparencies (it was just a bear to program for), the mesh transparencies look identical to real ones on a CRT (tube TV) like you would have been using in 1995. I just played through Toshinden Remix, notorious for mesh transparencies, and no mesh was visible, just a clear transparency. The way the pixels glowed and bled into each other on an old-school TV made this a non-issue, which is probably why so many developers didn´t bother learning how to use VDP-2 to make real ones. If you have a Saturn and an old CRT-TV, check it out yourself.
Mas me parece q a resolução no Saturn é maior.
I love this game, a lot of people dont card for the graphical style. I think it's one of the best in the series.

Nice! Thanks for making this! From what I can tell the Saturn version of this game has better backgrounds, but the PlayStation one version has better sound effects and more content!
I prefer the Saturn version ironically because the weapon switching is instant. if you switch the buttons to direct mode in the options the Saturn's controller will fire the weapons in sequential order. weapon1 = a weapon 2 = b and so on. just press the button that you need and when you need it. no need for a weapon switch button at all.
💯
Direct mode is the way to go.
In my opinion both look nice I dont think you can go wrong which one you pick?
9:45 biggest difference is right here.
PS1 has a simple flat layer on the floor with noticeable texture warping.
Saturn has Multiples layers underneath the Flat the Layer less texture warping, more fog effects, better textures, & an overall more detailed background.
thats 1 sample
but if check the first stage on the saturn the ocean background version looks flat simple and less color
the ps1 version does have better background parallax on stage 1
both games have some advantages on stages but the saturn wins here mainly beacuase of NO lag on gameplay..
Saturn VDP2 being put to great use here. Down side is the mesh transparencies which look ugly as usual. I'd rather just solid colours. Sound effects are clearer on the PS1.
Sounds aren't better though. Also, just be grateful that at least some transparent objects are actually transparent.
Mesh transparencies don´t show on a CRT (tube TV) like they do in HD. In fact, they look just like regular transparencies. On an HD screen, though, they´re not pretty. On a CRT screen the pixels glow a bit and that causes the mesh to blend visually and look like legitimate transparencies. That´s probably why so many developers took that shortcut in the 90s--nobody could tell anyway.
@@christianpalmer225 That makes perfect sense. Too bad it only worked in the short term.
@@christianpalmer225 It depends on the cable used. I played the Sega Saturn via scart cable way back in the mid 90s and the mesh effect was very noticeable to me. I didn't mind too much as the scart cable picture quality was great for it's time.
@@segat-800 me to. Specially Nights Into Dreams

Saturn the best for sure.
If the PS1 is so good at transparencies, why did they remove several transparencies in the PS1 stages? Why do a lot of them have transparencies only in the Saturn version? There are both types of transparencies in the Saturn version and in several stages, we only have them on Saturn, not to mention the distortions, which, as you said, you only have on Saturn.
Another thing is that you talked a long time about the configuration of the Saturn buttons, except that in the Saturn options it is possible to configure the L and R buttons for changing weapons, as in the PS1, if you prefer. It is also possible to configure each button exclusively for each weapon. If your concern is the rapid change of weapons, the version of Saturn is the one that suits you the most. It is also possible to play with the analog controller in both versions.
There is nothing to question. Even with some useless perfumeries, the PS1 version does not in any way surpass the Saturn version, which has the best effects, including exclusive transparencies and distortions, in addition to, of course, having the best control and the best polygonal graphics, without the crap warp textures, in the PS1 version.

Enfim saturno vence.
3:47 says it all, Saturn has so much more detail in the graphics and background detail.
I have the Saturn version I think it’s the best. The transparency effects in stage 2 on the Saturn version aren’t a dethered mess And stage 5 there’s a transparent fog affect. That the PlayStation doesn’t have Plus some stages on the PlayStation are darker and missing colour
My memories on PS1
I’m sorry, but I’m afraid you can ser two weapon select buttons at the option screen in the Saturn version, so you are lying, and the Saturn one is best in playability too…
trilha sonora desse jogo é fantástica
We need a remaster! Just give the gfx a shot of 2021. Don't mess with anything else!
I played the PS1 version only, watching the video I missed the CG intro with the plot of the game being narrated. That was a plus to the game, gave it more depth.
Sega Saturn don’t have a problems with the real transparency, the problem was very complicated for the developers use the multiprocessor power, many games in Saturn running using only the half or less the real power of the console….. even with that Saturn is a impressive console, games who used both processor demonstrated the real power and superiority of Saturn
What games in particular? I still own the Saturn with several original games
SATURN WINS...🤘🤘
But the saturn really lost because nobody bought them.
And now its considered cool to like it more than the ps1

PSX got the port this time. Saturn Wins in ALL departments here.
Saturn wins, but not in all departments. Saturn's sound is a bit muffled in comparison and the PS1 version has slightly cleaner texture mapping. PS1 also has added presentation elements like more CG movies, more modes, and higher resolution title screen. Overall, though, Saturn version is best.
@@SEGAHEADDY I guess so, But, the intro film is rubbish any way, i would have preferred a manga/anime intro. as for the sound and title screen.......😏 Meh, back then we all had CRT's, this was fine for the standards we was use too. I think most of the development time on PSX was spent trying to mimic the VDP's of the Saturn, rather than focus on the strengths of the PSX, They should have made a New Thunder-force Side game for PSX using the hardware more creatively.
I would respect that.
Love the Saturn and PSX!!! Great Times!
The game doesn't really look that great to begin with and the Saturn version like always has those horrible fake / dithered transparencies.
I own both versions and play em on my CRT. Saturn via s-video and PS1 via PS2 slim with component... can still easily see when something is higher resolution. Audio is easy to hear the difference when changing inputs on the TV between each version of the game. Hell, pause this very video when the title screen is shown for both and you'll see the resolution difference.
@@RetrOrigin And yet there are moments when Saturn has cool transparent effects that the PS1 version is completely lacking. See 12:10 and 15:00. But yes, the light rays coming through the forest in Stage 2 are the usual mesh ones.
Saturn aside from transparencies. That first level underwater was killin PS1.
the game was released a year before on Saturn and has the luxury of being much more successful graphically .... as for Grandia when the ports are done in this direction, the PS1 does not really compare.
I love both versions and devices. 👍
Which one do you prefer?
Nice. You finally compared Thunder Force V SS & PS1! From my experience SS had better graphics but PS1 had better sound & some extra content.
I didn't think the PS1 port had better sound.
@@TS-yz3ud Haven't played the SS version but the video does make the PS1 version seem like it has more distortion.
I wish i had played the saturn Version instead the PSX one. But still i favor the PSX Version because the awesome Soundquality.
This game is gold
Cost's as much, especially the saturn version.
Saturn.
Saturn version looks much better IMO. I'd have fun playing either one though.
Indeed, yes it is!!!!!!!!!!! PS1 wins!!!!!
Backgrounds take a serious hit on the psx port. There's no reason they couldn't have been on par with each other too. All the sprites and foreground objects look mostly identical. Clearly this was well optimized on the Saturn and concessions were made in porting it over.
I've not played either one but the Saturn seems to be running smoother than the playstation. The background seems more detaiedl on the playstation.

I didn't know there was a PS1 version has to be more rare than the Saturn one (i mean isn't Thunder Force a Sega franchise?)
Looks like the PS version cut some corners to make it happen. Saturn version is better obviously but the PS version isn't bad at all. I have the PS version and would love a Saturn copy...that will have to wait. I just plunked down some $ for Souky to add to my beloved Saturn shmup collection.
Nice video!
The PS1 needs a rom hack adding some of the graphical flourishes of the Saturn.
A versão do Saturn é melhor.

Saturn the best
For years, and well before this channel was created, I have been a huge fan of this title regardless of platform... but for Tecnosoft's ThunderForce V, I give the nod to the *SEGA Saturn (SS) version* for various reasons.
I found that the Saturn's graphics were indeed superior 'throughout the game'. The two later stages not shown in this video (+ the Final Stage) also look noticeably better on the SS as well, with effects outright missing from my Playstation's "perfect" system edition. Having said that, I actually don't think ANY of the 5th gen polygonal shmups look all that great, regardless. But the Saturn clearly wins graphically between the two versions.
However, it's not just the graphics that favor the SS version's TFV -- both *control* and *sound* are better in the Saturn version as well.
The sound effects aren't properly mastered in the ps edition. "Perfect" system sounds more echoey and "less punchy" in actual live stereo, whereas the SS original version doesn't have that problem at all. The Saturn version's audio is both crisp and impacful through my stereo.
The Playstation edition's music was also inexplicably altered 😞. Why, oh why did they do that?? The Saturn version's soundtrack was pitch perfect 👈 and is the Gold standard for this game's OST in my opinion. I was quite excited to get the ps1 "perfect system" edition version, but hearing the "altered" version of certain music tracks was a let down for me before my first run was even completed.
The Saturn controller is yet again outright preferable. The 6 face buttons can be re-mapped to accommodate direct access to each main weapon OR you can customize how you want, including (L)(R) toggle. And the Saturn's D-Pad is peerless for 2D control.
Speaking of extras, my Saturn version even came with a second disc that contained music from every title in the ThunderForce series. I still have that light blue CD. Tecnosoft also treated Saturn owners very well by doing the two ThunderForce Gold packs (they were SS exclusive, just like the music CD). And SS also got Hyper Duel exclusively.
So after all that, I feel like Playstation deserved to have the added intro and art gallery content, etc tossed into the "perfect system" aka 'ps' edition of this game. Unfortunately, in the end, the novelty wore off quickly -- the things they added to the ps edition turned out to be totally trivial additions for me personally. But at least there was "some" effort made in order to compensate us double-dippers. 🙂
While you can't go wrong with either version of this awesome shmup classic, the SEGA Saturn version is the clear winner here with ThunderForce V.
I have both versions, but I played the PSX version in the 90s, I do not mind, PSX version is very good for me.
Mesh transparencies and Saturn go hand in hand, it was always the Saturn's achilles heel..
From what I understand the Saturn can in fact do perfect transparencies but the programmers have to go in and flag each pixel that needs to be transparent then write code at the time to hand it over to VDP 2 or something. Basically 1 chip can't do it, but another chip could do it so it had to be handed to that chip... The Saturn's real downfall was the 8 different CPU's it had in it (I think it was 8?) Really I don't think any game out for the Saturn used 100% of the resources. Way too complex to code for. I would loved to have seen what someone could really pull off on that system though. I suspect tons of untapped potential.
@@Jonathan-fs7es which sums up why many developers flocked to the PSX instead of trying to work out how to get the best out of a console that was needlessly complex, and ended up having a significant impact on the future of Sega as a hardware developer...
@@yuvraj01 For sure the PS1 won that gen for multiple reasons, cheaper media with more storage helped it kick the N64's butt, then ease of development helped it win against the Saturn. It just made the most sense to develop for from a sheer money perspective.

Sega Saturn o do outro mundo
Saturn version is the best with some more details but ps version is great too🤩
Saturn pc engine lovers🙃👍
They both look rough in my opinion. Saturn has some effects like fog that are missing on the PSX. Some level design choices are just different, not necessarily better than the other. However, I'm noticing better textures and better overall detail on the PSX version. The backdrops also look more vibrant on the PSX.
I dunno about PS1 having more vibrant backgrounds... 6:18 looks much more vibrant on Saturn. Same with 9:44. 15:00 is more vibrant on PS1 because it's completely lacking the transparent swirly fog effect, which is a negative not a positive.
@@SEGAHEADDY Hard to take anything you say as unbiased with a handle like that. I will admit to the flawed backdrop observation though. I still stand by my statement about the textures.
@@phoenix75888 I agree 100% on the cleaner texture mapping. Trust me, I'm not biased. Check out my other comments on this video and you'll see I give credit where it's due for each version of the game. BTW I own both versions ;)
Eeeeh... Saturn has some better effects. But the PSX has better sound ( better sound choices too ) better texturing and better resolution to boot. The background on stage 4 when descending downward, the PSX represented with some more abstract Background. While I like some of saturns designs in stage 4 , the better resolution in psx wins and their background aint so bad either. Saturns color pallet is a little darker overall. I love em both to be honest. Im a big audio head myself. I have to say its a tie. I wish their was a hybrid with the best of noth worlds.
Sega Saturn me surpreendeu nesse jogo.... realmemte... achei bem melhor que a versão do PlayStation.
Man, the Saturn version certainly has better backgrounds and effects, but the Saturn is so dang tricky to emulate so I just play the ps1 version. Even though it looks worse in a lot of areas, it's still one of the best looking PS1 games by far.
Still an awesome ps shmup, despite being inferior. Gameplay just feels... right.
I like TFV better than any other ps shmup. Better than Einhander. Better than Taito's Ray games. Better than G-Darius.
Radiant Silvergun might be the only 'Gen 5' shmup that I enjoy more than TFV.
Prefiro Versão pixelado texturas Saturn deu bem aproveitamento chip gráficos 2d para fins texturas transparência, do que versão textura mapeada da PlayStation, cenários alta resolução ficou vazia sem vida...

both version are amazing
*SEGA SATURN is the winner however the sound and music is better on PS as SONY has always been the experts on sound I guess?!?!?* ⭐️
Makes sense. Sony provided the sound chips for every sega console pretty much pre-playstation.
@@RazorEdgeBullie Sega used Texas Instruments SN76489 and Yamaha chips in their consoles
Cool.
Saturn music sound quality is much better than PS
Why saturn graphics more 3d effects than ps1
