    Can you find out if they are moving entirely away from Prores? Obviously you can attach a video assist, but with the most recent cameras from Blackmagic, it seems there's a higher focus on braw and a complete abandonment of Prores in the cameras. Is this a licensing issue with Apple? I just want to understand why it's important for them to make you use braw for everything. I'm already cutting in DaVinci Prores or not. Thanks!

    Totally blown away. Stunned. I think there is no one out there who watched the stream that was expecting this much!
    3 things you could ask them about:
    -Camera control from Video Assist (Especially important now, so you could rig a VideoAssist on top of the new box camera and use that as control monitor in certain scenarios).
    When Portkeys can do it, why not BMD??
    -A lower end OVF for like 500€-700€. The new one seems good, but i just need a good enough solution, not a high end cinema quality one that cost nearly as much as the new Box camera. The options on the market are so bad quality/buggy, outdated and or overpriced.
    -Adding WIFI to future cameras, so phones can finally be used as wireless monitors.

    Stop griping about the Dynamic Range. People forget Sony and RED both rate their cameras ENTIRE dynamic range based off their sensors maximum patch range, including the entire noise floor, rounded up, where as Blackmagic, a lot like ARRI , rates their Dynamic Range based off the USABLE Dynamic Range rounded up. The reason this matters is both Sony and RED are overestimating their total dynamic range to include the removal of all noise from the resulting image. That means one can't actually hit the claimed Dynamic Range of most if not all Sony or RED cameras. Sure they can claim 15 to 17 stops, but if the sensors patch range is only 14.x to 15.x stops then one can't actually achieve the claimed DR even if one some how managed to remove all the noise. AKA at this point, based off the Cine-D lab tests, NO tested RED camera can exceed 16 stops of DR period, because none have a patch range over 16 stops. Blackmagic cameras, on the other hand, have patch ranges that have gone as high as 16.6 stops (Ursa 12k), and yet they've never claimed any of their cameras to have above 15 stops for any of their cameras (prior to this years announcement). That means if one were able to recover the full image patch range from a Blackmagic URSA 12k it would exceed the patch range of anything other than an ARRI. Also it should be pointed out many of the Cine-D tests don't do apples to apples DR comparisons, because some cameras have internal NR where as Blackmagic and most other Cinema Cameras DO NOT. If one adds an equivalent amount of NR to the Blackmagic Cameras they often exceed the tested competition that have built in NR like the A7SIII. That is why it's foolish to gripe about claimed DR unless one has actually done and apples to apples comparison, and in most cases Blackmagic cameras are much better than people give them credit for.

    Frame rates on a camera are often an indicator of the sensors readout speed and rolling shutter. They probably can't get higher frame rates at lower resolutions because of the amount of time it takes to read the sensor. But being able to do 100 frames a second at 12K means it still has a pretty fast readout time and should have decent rolling shutter performance.

      @lucasvivante8988 5 месяцев назад +1

      Cropping on a sensor shorten the readout speed. Less pixel to read = less time to read the pixels.
      Every full frame offering s35 crop have better performance in rolling shutter in crop mode, and not by a small margin. So no rolling shutter does not limit the frame rate at lower pixel ratios.
      What could be a problem is if these modes are not crop but oversample. Oversampling needs to read the whole sensor

    • @nickxc
      @nickxc 5 месяцев назад

      @@lucasvivante8988 sorry I should clarify that I was only referring to the s35 9k crop. Framerate and rolling shutter are still limited by how fast the sensor can dump heat and electrons before recapturing capture light. When you crop to s35 you aren't necessarily reading that area out any faster than in full frame.
      It's kinda like depth of field when you use the same lens on ff and s35. The depth of field doesn't change but our perception overall does due to the larger area on ff.
      I could be way off base, but currently my thinking is due to the pixel density when reading the whole ff or 35 area the camera cant keep up with the heat to read out any faster.
      When dropping to 8k ff blackmagic say with their new Bayer pattern they are pixels skipping, so you have fewer pixels to read and a larger area to dissipate heat.
      You are correct that cropping does increase readout speed, but there can be other factors.
      But the original point I was kinda trying to make is that slow framerates doesn't necessarily mean slow readout, but high frame rights do mean fast read outs.

    • @nickxc
      @nickxc 5 месяцев назад

      @@lucasvivante8988 sorry I should have clarified. I'm referring to the 9k s35 crop.
      A sensors readout speed and in turn rolling shutter and framerates can also be effected by how fast a sensor can dump heat and electrons before recapturing light for the next frame.
      Your correct that cropping to s35 does increase read speed and reduce overall rolling shutter but in the same way we effect perceived depth of field when using the same lens on s35 and full frame. The camera doesn't actually read the super 35 area any faster than in full frame mode, but it can start reading the next frame sooner cause there is less to read. If you overlay the s35 capture it's effective on full frame the rolling shutter often lines up assuming no processing or data limitations.
      I could be way off base but my thinking here is that due to the pixel density in ff 12k and s35 9k the camera cant cool the sensor effectively enough to increase the read out and framerate. Blackmagic said that their with their new Bayer pattern on the 12k sensor they are pixel skipping. So when they reduce resolution on full frame they have a greater area for fewer pixels allowing the camera to read out more frames while still cooling effectively.
      What I was kinda trying to say on my original comment is that low framerates dont necessarily mean a slow readout, but fast framerates mean that the readout has to be faster meaning the rolling shutter is reduced.

    This is just add perspective for the people complaining about the dynamic range of the pyxis.
    So here is cineD dynamic range test done to a signal to noise ration of 2. The new bmcc6k gets a score of 11.7 so the pyxis will be the same as it the same sensor. A $3000 camera can’t get much more DR. The bmpcc og had a score of 11.2 and it’s 10 years old. Sure a $25000-$80000 camera has more if your lucky a true DR of 13-15.

    Hey buddy, if the PYCIS_6K would have 13 stops of dynamic range - that would be more than great - even the URSA camerad had less than 13 stops of dynamic range (based on 2:1SNR XYLA tests) !!! Numbers on papers can't be trusted tbh !!!

    The side monitor is excellent, it’s just not meant to be for the operator; it’s for the AC.

    For the PYXIS 6K - I know we want it to be a single user, but the side screen is for a focus puller. Everyone needs a buddy. It's great that the RHS plate dimensions are available, to make your own mounts for whatever you are doing. Please use metal CNC, and not 3D Printer plastic. Otherwise use base mount gear, which is plentiful.

    Most important question: why did they ditch ProRes? I know that Brad is highly potent codec and I love using it. But for some projects I would need h.264 or ProRes and record FullHD without cropping. The small codec variety makes this camera unusable for certain projects which is a BIG PROBLEM for a small production company.

    I’m both thrilled and disappointed by this release. Thrilled because the “box camera” is finally in the BM ecosphere and will be going forward into the foreseeable future. However, I’m exceptionally bummed because the frame rate is beyond laughable at this point. Come on, in 2024 anything less than 6k 120 fps is, in my opinion, unacceptable. The other two big disappointments are no swiveling/tilting onboard monitor and no internal ND. These are all (minus the frame rate) things we’ve seen them do on the BM Pocket. I know…I had one before I sold it for a Komodo. I was really hoping to sell the Komodo and go all in on Blackmagic….but there is no point here. Also, what’s the deal with EF mount over RF? Just give us an RF mounting option so we can choose which Canon glass we want to use. I know the flange distance would be tighter, but I also know it’s doable. Anyways, guess I’ll be waiting for Gen 2 of this. Still, it’s very exciting to know this camera finally, FINALLY exists. They just need to perfect it before I buy it.

    I feel like the monitor on the side of the PYXIS is basically like the 1st AC monitor for the Ursa 12k because the thought was that most people are using external monitors anyways.

    While the price is the main draw, what its missing is glaring. Those hyping it up without experiencing it on a paid shoot may find themselves regrettably coming back down to Earth. I believe DM will take the tempeture of this offering and use the feedback to create the Pyxes Pro that should have build in ND, 15 stop range, 4K at 60 or even 120fps and 14 and maybe even 16 bit internal recording. With those upgrades, those hyping up the price of the Pyxis will also hype up a $4K to $5K price.

    I miss the Global Shutter from Blackmagic. I like that they did the box camera, weird that the screen on the side, should have been on the top, but I wanted a Global Shutter in it. I basically want a cheaper Red Komodo from BM.

    Internal ND's and lack of full sized XLR input is a let down for me, as well as no RF Mount. I shoot mainly canon and also shoot photos with the R3 and going to get the R1 when it drops. I left the EF mount a long time ago. I really want to like this camera, but it's just not for me. Waiting for the next C300 and hopefully it's a refresh/bigger update with the intro to the RF lineup.

    Here my question.
    1. Could we see an update where we can record higher fps at open gate via sdi recording on video assist 12G?
    2. Would it be possible to run usbc to video assist 12G for image and power if we don’t want the EVF?
    3. Any potential of making a dedicated monitors? Say take the video assist 12gs and take away the external recording components. In order to make just a monitor that also has USB-C for image signal and camera controls without having to use the side screen.
    3. Can the screen be set to auto off and tap to wake like a phone? To save battery when not using it until we need to?

    I don’t really understand why they chose to slap big monitors on the sides of the new ursa. When using a cinema camera setup you need the side of the camera for transmitter, AC gear etc. Now you can’t because there is a big screen there without mounting options. So for proper narrative work I’m afraid this new 12K is difficult to work with. The Pyxis is fine with a fixed screen but again, I wished it was smaller for just menus and quick viewing and leave more room for mounting. And just like the cinema 6k it will have pretty heavy cmos smearing and rolling shutter on FF. As a s35 cam it is great though as long as you can light your scenes decently.

    A box camera is amazing don’t get me wrong, but I really don’t get the hype about a box camera. Like yes maybe it’s easier to mount on a gimbal etc, but you lose a lot of quality of life features - the ability to just go out, be creative, and be nimble with a point and shoot system. I understand it’s a separate camera, I just hope they don’t discontinue the pocket series.

    And that box is so utterly stupid. Monitor on the side. Nothing better over the og pocket 6k pro other than open gate. So I can not have a side handle if I want tobias the Monitor? LOL
    People argue about the format of the pocket .. but the monitor is such an advantage, I own the Komodo x too, but boy do I love the monitor of the 6k pro.
    Still the same idiotic dc port 🤪

    Really great upgrades! The only thing I miss with new 6k are ingrated ND filters. This would make it stunning. But what do you think of the new Micro Panel? I really think about selling my BM Mini Panel for the new Micro Panel, because it has much more buttons and functions and is portable like no other.
