Would love to see an updated Video Assist monitor line from BM. Ideally one that allows you to adjust the internal settings of the camera. This would negate the side-monitor issue on the Pyxis.
Guys this cam is a beast for the price! The screen is not for filming it's for operating, fix your settings by moving over have a millimetre and then get back to your external monitor . Let's not complain about the monitor it gives amateur vibes. I'm not saying you're an Am Michael just want the youngsters to see this is not an issue at all, let's move past it fast and focus on this gift to the market. Great video !! Sick Cam.
Really great upgrades! The only thing I miss with new 6k are ingrated ND filters. This would make it stunning. But what do you think of the new Micro Panel? I really think about selling my BM Mini Panel for the new Micro Panel, because it has much more buttons and functions and is portable like no other.
I have a bmpcc4k with a Portkey monitor connected by HDMI. I do not see an HDMI connector in the Pixis. What would be the ideal add-on monitor for this camera? Obviously, one that can run the menus as the Portkey or the Small HD do? Could my current monitor be connected by USB-C, where the viewfinder goes somehow? Sorry if the questions are silly. But I don't see myself filming solo with the monitor on the side of the camera. I also use Both tilta Nucleus M handles for focus and iris. It would be interesting to work out how to put them on either side of the camera...The Pyxis looks amazing, though...Cheers and thanks for your video.
So far my only gripe is the location of the SDI ports in relation to the battery port - especially when wanting to mount v mount or gold mount options. Can you ask BM if there will be a solution for that? Or when you see it in person can you see how much real estate there is to fit a v mount battery/plate back there? Thanks!
With my Komodo I have an external monitor and even a viewfinder but I find myself liking using just the top screen and keeping it minimal. Like that BM has finally done it by why so late and why just 13 stops.
ASK THESE PLEASE: Ability to search vst in tracks by either vendor or category in the fair light page. 2. Ability to add sticky notes in the clip node editor . Useful when transferring projects between systems 3. Ability to convert compound clips to multicam clips … this is ambitious I know. But is useful to enhance workflow especially in tv series editing 4 ability to duck the transcribe pop up panel … maybe like a tap on the inspector section. And a streamline script base editing workflow like that of avid media composer. This would be so lovely to have 😊 5. Ability to create instrument tracks and loads VSTi for scoring and foley composition with a KONTAKT foley library. This would be so cool to have in the fair light page… 6. Ability to send out more than 3 displays from video cards that supports the number. This is used when you aimed at dedicating a monitor for scopes, two for editing, one for main output and why not another for lightbox when in color page and or the mixer channel when in fairlight page… this would be super useful… I have a quadro card with 4 display port out but I can only use 3 …. Thank you so much please I hope resolve get to consider these… I have been using resolve back as 2014… It is my number one ❤❤❤❤😊😊
Hi Michael, I’m curious why they didn’t opt for v mount for the “black box” camera since mini batteries are all the rage these days. Are the minis still too big for the box form factor? Would love if you can get an answer from them at NAB. Curious too if they will say what’s next for the BMPCC line. In some ways the FX3/FX30 is the true “PCC”, especially in terms of form factor
Most important question: why did they ditch ProRes? I know that Brad is highly potent codec and I love using it. But for some projects I would need h.264 or ProRes and record FullHD without cropping. The small codec variety makes this camera unusable for certain projects which is a BIG PROBLEM for a small production company.
This launch was effing huuuuuuge! I’m definitely getting the Pyxis! I absolutely love Blackmagic. Their products are the Apple of cameras (in a good way).
For the PYXIS 6K - I know we want it to be a single user, but the side screen is for a focus puller. Everyone needs a buddy. It's great that the RHS plate dimensions are available, to make your own mounts for whatever you are doing. Please use metal CNC, and not 3D Printer plastic. Otherwise use base mount gear, which is plentiful.
Great video, and safe travels Michael. Question for BM unrelated to hardware: Would it be possible to trigger in-body recording on iPhones via ATEM? Iya the one item on my bucket list whilst I continue to use the app as I save up for my first Blackmagic camera.
Great camera for an even better price. Shame about the lack of NDs but was to be expected from BM. I just don't get why the screen isn't flippable line the Ursa Mini, would make it way more versatile. Also no ibis and (good) auto focus I wager??
I don't understand why folks are b-ing and moaning and nagging about the side screen. Arri, reds, Sony cine have screens on the side. I shoot with a monitor on komodo. this is a cine cam guys!!! no camera under $3000 packs so much features. if u don't like it, stick with the previous version or other dslrs
Please ask them if they reduced the price of the monitors because they are planning to release an updated version soon, I have the lumix S5 MK2 and I feel like the monitor was released way before the camera and would love to see a new version with some new cool features on it.
Atomos is doing a decent job at making older gear better or cheaper too. They gave the 2018 Ninja V a paid firmware update that gives it all the modern OS features of their latest monitors.
Michael, please ask BM during your interview, will they make and sell separate external controlling monitor for Pyxis. if not which touch screen monitors will be best option to use. Also about V mount option instead of current, will they make and sell V mount battery plate or not? Thanks and have a great holidays.
We're going to get a lot more options for that right side panels. They're making the specks for those and all of the cage manufacturers will have different mounting options based on it
Agree with you on the monitor. Making such a decent monitor on the side for 90% of users not to use it, is poor planning on BMs part. That monitor adds to the price, for no one to use it.
didn't see any info on the bit depth of the new camera. please tell me its not 10 or 12 bit...Braw is 12.. so i'm hoping there's something else going on inside the box... If it's not 16 bit, then its of limited value as compared to the arri or sony
I feel like the monitor on the side of the PYXIS is basically like the 1st AC monitor for the Ursa 12k because the thought was that most people are using external monitors anyways.
I think it's time to switch over to DR from FCPX. I'm looking at your paid tuts but I'm wondering if they will still be effective given the newer version. Do you see any extra add-ons to cover the new features?
I don’t really understand why they chose to slap big monitors on the sides of the new ursa. When using a cinema camera setup you need the side of the camera for transmitter, AC gear etc. Now you can’t because there is a big screen there without mounting options. So for proper narrative work I’m afraid this new 12K is difficult to work with. The Pyxis is fine with a fixed screen but again, I wished it was smaller for just menus and quick viewing and leave more room for mounting. And just like the cinema 6k it will have pretty heavy cmos smearing and rolling shutter on FF. As a s35 cam it is great though as long as you can light your scenes decently.
Internal ND's and lack of full sized XLR input is a let down for me, as well as no RF Mount. I shoot mainly canon and also shoot photos with the R3 and going to get the R1 when it drops. I left the EF mount a long time ago. I really want to like this camera, but it's just not for me. Waiting for the next C300 and hopefully it's a refresh/bigger update with the intro to the RF lineup.
I'll get the box camera for sure. The monitor isn't a big issue for me hus I just wish it had global shutter. I'd even pay extra for that but this for that price is incredible. I love what blackmagic are doing!
Definitely the micro color panel! Just couldn't pull the trigger on the older one @ that price point/functionality. Doesn't say explicitly, DaVinci Resolve Studio activation key included. 🤷♂
Only thing left for me now is ProRes Raw support in Davince Resolve. I like Davince so much more than Premiere, but the missing ProRes Raw support or need to convert to Cinema DNG kills the Application for me. One could dream :D
The resolve replay system they announced was mind blowing. A few years ago a 2 channel replay system would cost you $20,000 now Blackmagic release this with 8 channels
A sensor that can do frames rates that high will not having rolling shutter issues - those two metrics are directly related - faster the sensor read-out, the faster the HFRs will be and the lower the rolling shutter will be.
yes and not necesarily, it wont be bad as you said, but what if by the time the last line of pixels of frame A the next frame is already 1/3 into reading? you still get fast fps.
@@STONJAUS_FILMS I can't recall a single camera with good high frame rate options and bad rolling shutter (this is why there's a massive crop for HFR in a lot of cameras, to reduce sensor read-out time and get on to capturing the next frame). Happy to be challenged on this!
Can't wait for the PYXIS 6K Pro with Internal NDs a year from now. Also If BMD makes a external camera monitor that can use the front Viewfinder USB that would be awesome.
@initialfocus Can you please ask BMD when they will produce a high quality colorist’s monitor? Hopefully something affordable that can replace these super expensive monitors like those from Flanders Scientific, et al.
Please ask BMD if the Ursa 12K/17K will be available without the proprietary Media Module. Or if there is a way to swap the Media Module for the CFExpress Module option. I don’t need 8TB internally as I will mostly shoot 4K, occasionally 8K (as I do on my Ursa Mini 12K currently).
Internal ND would've been the icing on the cake. Still getting it as soon as I can tho lol

Let's not complain about the monitor it gives amateur vibes. I'm not saying you're an Am Michael just want the youngsters to see this is not an issue at all, let's move past it fast and focus on this gift to the market. Great video !! Sick Cam.
Do we get 120fps in 4K with the boxed camera?
All the modern RED cameras have a screen. Also the BMD Camera OS is based around touchscreen functionality. I love the larger screen on it.
Colourgrading with the Micropanel in a coffee shop! 😂
Really great upgrades! The only thing I miss with new 6k are ingrated ND filters. This would make it stunning. But what do you think of the new Micro Panel? I really think about selling my BM Mini Panel for the new Micro Panel, because it has much more buttons and functions and is portable like no other.
It was very nice meeting you today at NAB
Buzzing about the 6K box design! Waited so long for it! Just gutted there’s no internal ND’s. Hopefully they bring a pro version out
Sorry to go off topic, but is the iPad mount you’re using the SwitchEasy Flipmount?
I love they presenter they always use for these videos. He always seems so down to earth.
That’s Grant Petty, CEO 😂 he’s amazing
He's so awesome, smart and gentle.
So adorable
Hi do u work for Black Magic I use Adobe Premier the older version I am slowy buying parts for 4K h.265 30 fps 60 fps for blogging
So far my only gripe is the location of the SDI ports in relation to the battery port - especially when wanting to mount v mount or gold mount options. Can you ask BM if there will be a solution for that? Or when you see it in person can you see how much real estate there is to fit a v mount battery/plate back there? Thanks!
tilta, smallrig and everybody will make and adapter for vmount batteries. That certainly will extend beyond the sdi port
You can also have a right angle mount for sdi
@@nicolacornolti so true! Thanks for that insight!
The side monitor just greases the space between your checkbook and the new sick AF EVF !
With my Komodo I have an external monitor and even a viewfinder but I find myself liking using just the top screen and keeping it minimal.
Like that BM has finally done it by why so late and why just 13 stops.
Is there any plan to capture Zdepth and encode that data inside their cameras for VFX artists to capture and utilize?
ASK THESE PLEASE:
Ability to search vst in tracks by either vendor or category in the fair light page.
2. Ability to add sticky notes in the clip node editor . Useful when transferring projects between systems
3. Ability to convert compound clips to multicam clips … this is ambitious I know. But is useful to enhance workflow especially in tv series editing
4 ability to duck the transcribe pop up panel … maybe like a tap on the inspector section. And a streamline script base editing workflow like that of avid media composer. This would be so lovely to have 😊
5. Ability to create instrument tracks and loads VSTi for scoring and foley composition with a KONTAKT foley library. This would be so cool to have in the fair light page…
Thank you so much please
I hope resolve get to consider these…
I have been using resolve back as 2014…
It is my number one ❤❤❤❤😊😊
I have been bitching about the ergonomics of the BMPcamera line, and they shut me up, tied up and strapped me down today. DAMN!!!!!
Do black magic cameras have autofocus? If so, is it good?
This launch was effing huuuuuuge! I’m definitely getting the Pyxis! I absolutely love Blackmagic. Their products are the Apple of cameras (in a good way).
For the PYXIS 6K - I know we want it to be a single user, but the side screen is for a focus puller. Everyone needs a buddy. It's great that the RHS plate dimensions are available, to make your own mounts for whatever you are doing. Please use metal CNC, and not 3D Printer plastic. Otherwise use base mount gear, which is plentiful.
I'm almost happier for you than I am for myself. Your videos have been hoping and anticipating something big from BM for a while now! 😂 👏👏
One more thing: did they add basics to resolve like copying text attributes?
Amazing! BM never let us down
Black magic pyxis 13 stops dynamic range is the main issue I have with this camera. Also no H.265
Basically it’s the Pocket 6K in a box format.
They're making the specks for those and all of the cage manufacturers will have different mounting options based on it
Will DR19 be able edit H265 (HEVC) files without going to the studio version on WIndows?
Agree with you on the monitor.
Making such a decent monitor on the side for 90% of users not to use it, is poor planning on BMs part. That monitor adds to the price, for no one to use it.
I agree about the screen. It should have been fully articulating like the cine 12k.
I am sure they will have Firmware updates in a few months to address the speeds etc.
didn't see any info on the bit depth of the new camera. please tell me its not 10 or 12 bit...Braw is 12.. so i'm hoping there's something else going on inside the box... If it's not 16 bit, then its of limited value as compared to the arri or sony
I feel like the monitor on the side of the PYXIS is basically like the 1st AC monitor for the Ursa 12k because the thought was that most people are using external monitors anyways.
Are there ND filters on the PYXiS?
Will the PYXIS have internal NDs ?
no
They want you to buy one of their monitors that they just reduced in price. That's why the screen is on the side. Also for focus pullers.
I think it's time to switch over to DR from FCPX. I'm looking at your paid tuts but I'm wondering if they will still be effective given the newer version. Do you see any extra add-ons to cover the new features?
Oh yes, we’ll be adding 19 feature videos as soon as I get back from NAB to my resolve course
@@initialfocus I'm buying! The save50 code doesn't work. Should it?
I would loved that PYXIS 6K would have have RF mount as I have so many lenses. I would have payed more as with the PL mount.
Did resolve get a dope sheet for key framing yet?
They really need this!
I am wondering if we can use usb c to hdmi adapter for an external monitor
BM needs more audio recording options. More XLR inputs. Or just rethink recording audio in the field.
This is all great, but it lacks audio
Pixys might be good for shoulder mounts 👀.
Maybe docu style shooters might enjoy it
The Ursa cine looks so smart ergonomics wise and overall usage it's such a smart camera I feel jealous for whoever gets it and I would love to use it.
Hey Michael, I believe the FPS limitation could be based on the sensor readout speed. Curious to find out!
Can't wait for the PYXIS 6K Pro with Internal NDs a year from now. Also If BMD makes a external camera monitor that can use the front Viewfinder USB that would be awesome.
The side monitor is excellent, it’s just not meant to be for the operator; it’s for the AC.
@initialfocus Can you please ask BMD when they will produce a high quality colorist’s monitor? Hopefully something affordable that can replace these super expensive monitors like those from Flanders Scientific, et al.
Question for NAB. USB C for EVF, BNC for SDI. Why no HDMI? Is the idea to use an USB C iPhone/iPad as a monitor?
I wonder if we can control the camera and all settings from the blackmagic video assist?
So, I see no new product that would considered as an upgrade to ATEM Mini Pro ISO, right?
Witnessing Irix lenses steal the spotlight on the latest Black Magic camera brings me an immense sense of pride!
According to their website, yes there will be a card module available to use instead of the 8TB module.
