This is the reason I like Blackmagic Design. They are always focused on the entire workflow of video production...on making it easier, cheaper, and more.
I watched the Apple Immersive Demo video on the Vision Pro yesterday at the Apple Store and I had feelings I've never had before. It is so cool and will absolutely be the future of video content. Can't wait.
The dual 12k lense setup has the potential to capture spectacular HDR video. By underexposing one lense to capture details in the highlights and overexposing the other lense to capture all shadow details; we could essentially double the native dynamic range of the Blackmagic 12k camera when both exposures are combined into one editable RAW image. Especially if both lenses are shooting RAW. There is so much potential here for the camera to not only have a stereoscopic video mode, but to have a HDR video mode too...
If You can’t expose a camera properly with 16+ stops of range, GTFO of the industry. Producers don’t GAF about HDR and any extra associated costs. I went through the last 3D phase (local 600 DIT then DP) and it was an incredible PIA during production and with the files pipeline. Enjoy those files as production bitches every second on workflow needs for drives etc. This is going to be DOA…
Yes!!!! So excited for more 180 immersive content in highest quality. I want something priced for consumers also around 1000 bucks or less to create solid not pixelated immersive 3d video. I can do this w my quest 3 but same as vision pro it is pixelated but still amazing. And we have AR glasses now becoming more accessible that will allow us to view these videos without a bulky headset. Loving these moments. ❤
Truly, the key word, apart from the product and the whole vr process, is immersion. That's one of the main goals of filmmaking and this is a tool that took us one big step further to this.
A means of live previewing the raw footage from the timeline on a VR HMD/Vision - let alone proper live 3D VFX editing on that device will need to finally happen - otherwise, we are working somewhat blind.

I think you might have mixed it up...those were two separate announcements for two separate formats. They said that Spatial Video could be created using the Canon Lens, with Final Cut Pro uploaded to Vimeo.They said that that workflow would be available this fall. Then they moved on to the next section, explaining the "new gamechanging entertainment format" Apple Immersive Video, then they explained what it is, They said "Apple Immersive Video is 180 degree 8k immersive video with spatial audio". Then they explained this other, second production workflow, which is a BlackMagtic Camera, the Ursa Cinema Immersive, which will record 8k per eye into BRaw Immersive (a new format I think). You will be able to edit this footage inside of Resolve Studio, and then prepare it for delivery using Apple Compressor. Two separate formats, two separate workflows.
3D 180 is great, but 3D with a zoom lens to make 3D content for a regular video format in 4K - 8K is more practical and useful. Sony, JVC and Panasonic managed to do this ten years ago in 1080p - upgrade the old technology of 3D with the new sensors and processors. The you can shoot it just like it was with a. regular video camera, like 10 years ago.
I think any collaboration with tech is great - Seeing Nikon buying out Red and now Black magic, Canon and Apple working together, surly it has to be a match made in heaven. We need creators to be given the tools they need and not leave everything to AI - Just hope they price it right and to give everyone a chance.
Hey. Thanks for making this video! What is happening is that tech that has been in Hollywood for a long time now is coming to mainstream because it is finally affordable. James Cameron normally shoots in stereoscope for his films using 2 Sony cameras and that is why is films are so immersive and engaging. Technology has finally got to a place where this is more affordable to build and deliver to smaller film studios that don’t have James Cameron budgets. All in all I think that it is great!
tbh I think the canon lens for Rmount is more interesting for most use cases - this will deliver reasonable quality for actual clients... buying a whole new specific blackmagic camera will be something exclusive to major prod companies for apple content or broadcast
Considering the 12k Cine camera body starts at $16k or thereabouts, that this camera will have two 12k sensors and not just one, this will be out of reach for most people. Just a guess, but I bet that this will be no less than $30k, and it may even reach $50k. Unless a production company has a lot of business creating immersive content, I doubt they would make the investment. BUT, I can see a market for renting out this equipment to video production companies that need it for specific projects.
Nice video Michael, no one else i come across has the forward grasp you do in covering this subject, i think StereoScopic Video is a game change potential technology. It’s said that J Allen Hynek of Project BlueBook photographed in “Stereoscopic” : Imagine capturing that critical UFO shot, but doing it with a twin lens Stereoscopic 60fps motion picture capture? Imagine now how much more REAL the transmission of the image going from a 2D single shot to a 3D twineye which can replicate depth, distance and scale in ways our best fullframe cameras could never dream of, replicating an objective scene as our two eyes do. Half of the point of regular , rectangularly 'framed' footage is the ability to control what is /not/ shown as much as composing what is shown. Even in 180VR, the likelihood is that anything narrative created with it will have the majority of the 'subject' in the front 60 degrees of view, with everything else just being a kind of ambient set dressing. Which brings us back to 'why not just make better standard-framed footage?' Stereoscopic footage (a 2D frame but with depth perception) is a unique experience and certainly has been improving over the decades, but expanding the rectangular frame out to a whole hemisphere begs the question, 'For what? Peripheral ambience?'. There have been so few examples of good work made that actually make use of the extra visual real estate (outside of 'ambient set dressing with all the subject infront of you') that this camera will likely find itself more useful in non-narrative content like training videos or just pretty visual demos. Making something narrative/dramatic without being able to control where the viewer's attention is at any given moment is really quite difficult.
Yes. This. All of this. First think I found filming stuff on the Qoocam in 2020...how difficult it is to shoot anything and make it look good while controlling the audience's attention.
I picture a full on battlefield where you can watch the same film multiple times and view a different struggle/fight each time. I see your point to an extent but for me the new possibilities open up a whole new era of filmmaking. Current 2D will be like looking back at black and white Charlie Chaplin.
@@SethTaylor1 Honestly, the idea isn't that innovative and has been tried before but took off more in the PunchDrunk genre of theatre rather than the passive viewing experience of moveies. Punchdrunk allows the viewer to decide to follow an actor 'off-stage' to another set with an actor to follow their part of a larger multi-timeline story that collectively weaves together many different perspectives. This kind of multi-linear experience has been dabbled with in cinema a few times, most recently in a few Netflix films where, because they're on a digital/online platform, viewer's are given 'decision points' throughout the film to decide which way they want to follow the story. Giving them multiple possible watches from different perspectives, much like Punchdrunk theatre. So the idea has been worked before, this product really only brings stereoscopic viewing back in the form of a hemisphere rather than 'depth in a regular 2D rectangle' (cinema/tv etc). Which, while itself isn't that new as stereoscopic aquisition has been around a long time, nobody yet has been able to take the compositional 'frame' of a whole hemisphere and make something that can actually be controlled narratively. Only really just take 'normal' scenes in the front/center view that expands to include the surrounding environment, but otherwise has nothing of importance outside of that front 60degrees FOV. Think of a two-person confrontation scene in a living room, sure, you can see what's hung on the walls or wether or how many windows there are, but the detail that really makes the scene drive the narrative and emotion of the scene are in the delivery and non-verbal of the acting talent. The only real use of stereo 180deg footage in that situation would be if the blocking moved the acting talent around the viewer to some kind of tension effect. But honestly, you're getting into theatre again. Which is fine, just not cinema. So I could actually see this digitising the theatre industry rather than removing the visual restrictions of the frame that makes cinema such a fine medium.
@@_burd I see your point for sure. Though to take the example of a living room conversation. It changes from just viewing the scene through a window, to actually being in the room. Yes there is nothing inherently interesting about the wallpaper but the immersion gained is unprecedented. Modern games now have larger budgets than any film and have A list voice acting and script writing. We expect to be able to choose where to look and not a forced perspective cut scene.
@@SethTaylor1 The thing is that i actually believe the 'window' that cinema (or any video/photo really) makes the viewer look through is the very thing that gives cinema/photography it's power to move a viewer. Through that creative restriction of what's seen and what's not, the creator of the peice is forced into making decisions into 'how' a scene is shown, not just /that/ it is shown in it's entirety with no direction or suggestion of what the viewer might want/need to see for that larger story's arc. In that, the narrative choices of a director can emerge and we can get wildly variant styles and possible emotional/intellectual arcs from the same kind of 'confrontation in a living room' scene just by deciding to cut a shot in a different place, sequence shots differently, or compose shots it a certain, motivated way. What I believe hemispheric/stereo aquisition does is remove the 'motivation' of all visuals given to the viewer, and off-loads all the visual/spatial selection (finding a particular view/frame in that scene from which to view what's happening) onto the viewer, who they themselves might not know where to be and how, leaving a potentially brilliant scene falling flat because it's dependant on the weaker directorial/editorial decisions of a viewer. Now, I don't think it's impossible and that '3D just bad'- but there are some real challenges to overcome in deciding to do that to the viewer that I don't think has had a proper answer from those that have tried yet. I can certainly see it's use in other experiences/mediums like theatre or gaming (from dedicated VR to just head tracking and wider FOV on regular views.) for sure! Though the difference between these and more narrative story telling experiences like cinema is that even games need to cut to an edited, shot-based cinematic cutscene to collapse the viewer's potntial perspectives on a story they've gained during the gameplay down to one, curated story that the director has put together. Again, it would be cool to see someone or a team of people try and make stories that work in the VR format, or even to push it further into multi-linear storytelling. But even just removing the frame of view and offloading all those decisions on the viewer is a huge directorial/editorial challenge to overcome 🤔 I can imagine the critical part of the story playing out in
Bless your heart. Companies have been predicting practical 3d since the early 1940s and yet it’s never really broken through. I hope Apple can pull it off but the capture and display issues limit the market to a sliver of Apple’s wealthiest devotees. So how many of them will jump on board? Not many I’m guessing…
I wonder if James Cameron will switch to the Blackmagic Ursa Cine Immersive camera system for future spatial films. He developed his own 3D camera system for the Avartar series, but it is much bigger and bulkier.
i want to see what content a beginner to the entire video world could create with technology this innovative. The world is going Cyberpunk. AR and VR are already our current realities. The future of content has changed forever now.
Imagine having family memories on this format, you’d be 1% of 1% of 1% who would do it. Unless the prices drops I just can’t see the need. I’d love one though 🤷🏻♂️

You’re so right to be excited. The answer to mass adoption of spatial computing/XR was never gaming. It was…EVERYTHING else. This seems very similar to Tesla's approach with electric vehicles, without government subsidies (at least for now). Apple is methodically introducing XR into the zeitgeist. 1. Platform Introduction: incorporating familiar and existing ecosystems like iOS and macOS. 2. Hardware Development: Creating optimized devices like the Apple Vision Pro. 3. Content Partnerships: Collaborating with major corporations (e.g., Canon, Disney, Black Magic, NBA) to generate high-quality content. 4. Enterprise Adoption: Ensuring enterprises adopt XR first to validate the technology. 5. Market Education: Preparing the market through strategic partnerships and showcasing practical applications. Apple’s strategy ensures a robust infrastructure, content availability, and enterprise support, setting the stage for widespread consumer adoption.
Definitely immersive but this needs to motivate innovators to create a way to see the 3D without VR goggles. James Cameron was working on technology for theatres to have 3D with no glasses needed and was hoping to have it figured out by the release of avatar 2.
I have made standing, stable immersive content shot on Canon RF 180° 2.8 on R5C and even in the oculus 2 it was the most vivid 3D experience I have ever had. I have others testimonials to prove it! I can imagine a future with more 3D and an a flooding audience. I agree this market has real value.
the problem with immersion its the way of viewing. it needs specific contraption, gadget, hardware etc. the vision pro, other VR headset, las vegas sphere, etc... heck people even dont buy curve displays to experience more immersion.
curved displays are made to help the distortion issue of super wide frames. and yes, we will always need some type of "headset" to see 3D, its just in the nature of how the eyes process information. same way you will never hear Spatial Audio without headphones. the eyes and ears need to be isolated.
How wild that something so old is new again. I'm pretty stoked though, I had a cool gig doing 360 3D VFX and CGI for horror film experiences. It made me a VR fan.
Been there, done that. I was the lead engineer on Premiere Pro's immersive video team. At the time, it was the industry leader for cutting 360 and VR180 footage. People will jump into the tech early just because it's Apple - they did it with Google and Facebook half a decade ago, too. And then the marketing dollars will dry up because no one will consume the content. The Vision Pro is the best way to consume stereoscopic content, for sure, for the fraction of a percent of the population who can both afford the device and want to watch such passive content.
Future devices will get cheaper like everything else in tech. Everyone thought the original iPhone at $599 was crazy expensive, and now everyone has a mobile phone with a lot of people carrying $1,500 phones. I also see the world of movie creation becoming more engaging and interactive and less passive.
It’s never the first to introduce the innovation that win. I’d put my money on Apple to capture this market. VR has already grown in popularity compared to 5 years ago. I think we’re still 3-5 years away from adoption but I believe it’s coming eventually
I don't see this process that much difference to 360 cameras. The problem with 360 is that we need good lighting, and the picture quality is sub-par. If a lens can be thrown on a standard mirroless, software makes it like the framing we are use too, it may become more popular. The wide viewing is gr8, but currently 360 has limitations. These type of lenses need to fit seamlessly with standard footage.
My cost estimate would be between 8000-10000 USD for the camera. I’m just waiting for this patchup to also allow Prores RAW on to DaVinci Resolve. Will this be game changing? Absolutely. By the time we have Quest Pro 3 and Quest 5 out, there will be a lot of demand for the content and I’m sure BMD will find a way to make things cross-compatible. The video itself can possibly be reused in a 2D environment I suspect, so the camera will be a brilliant purchase with a bonus ‘cherry on top’. What mount do you think it’ll be? EF/MFT/L mount?
I suspect you need to more than double that number unfortunately. Their 12K single chip/single lens camera is already in at $15k so best guess would be $25k
@@DarrellPringle BMD did drop the official 12K camera price to 6K so I'm going off of that range as a marker for the difference, but you may well be right. Let's wait and watch :)
on my channel i did say that if apple went anywhere...it would be with blackmagic...its date stamped...so i was the first youtuber...to say it...and its now...true... yeah...more power to creators..and their incredible new adventures....
It is Blackmagic's camera, so it makes sense they'd want to promote their software too. Besides, Apple has made it clear that FCP is targeted towards content creators while Resolve is targeted towards professionals.
Oh I'm all for this switch and I know why it's a good thing. I'm just surprised Apple actually did it. They realized if they want pros making Vision content, that adapting industry standard brands, codecs, and workflows is the best way.
Shouldn't we be asking how this new format will be viewed? Will we all have to invest in new Monitors, TV's and Phones? Or glasses or goggles? Or will it work seamlessly with current display units?
Fantastic move for Apple. However, spherical 360 has been a thing for a long time and is supported natively on here and on Facebook with myriad devices already in market (Meta Quest etc). Making content for those is a nightmare presently. My favourite video on RUclips is all about reinjecting 360 meta data back into an unrolled spherical video that was dubbed, cut and graded in Resolve🤣.
Apple already announced an AI 3-D photo converter for Vision Pro. That means video conversion is right around the corner and it will only get better and better to the point where 3-D cameras are irrelevant. So in 50 years down the road every single one of your memories, every video you’ve ever taken can be viewed back in 3-D. Every RUclips video you’ve ever uploaded will have an option to be viewed in 3-D automatically in less than five years
If the R5C and the dual fish eye lens was good enough to film immersive content so far, why aren’t they promoting that as an option? It would be nice to use a system that’s already available and start now.
The R5C resolution is too low. 8K sensor is divided between the two lenses making 4K per eye. When you stretch that out over 180 degrees, it’s simply not enough and becomes kind of blurry. Especially for details not super close to you. This BM camera solves that. Also, the R5C shoots max 60fps. You want to be higher. 90-120fps to make everything smooth. The R5C is the minimum spec to do this kind of content, but not ideal.
VR, glasses stuff is cost expensive. Premium product prices might appear, which will block consumers to join this kind of ecosystems, unless you can use those cardboard classes with phone to view same videos without brand constraints?
Apple will probably release a new Vr headset every year getting better and better and same with meta and other companies. Add Ai to the mix and automation and boom we could get INSANE tech for super cheap in the future or even free if we automate like everything
And then there was lights, camera (the new Blackmagic dual sensor camera), and action (space/time travel). Right? If at some point in time there was total darkness, nothing existed until there was light. And... wait, where did I hear that before... "and then there was light..." 16 stops of dynamic range and 4 stops of dimensions.
I’m gonna say it…and might eat my words in 5 years, but who would buy a proprietary camera for a $3000 headset few people will ever own? I said the same thing about the oversized iPhone (iPad)
Lots of people saying 3D, and talking story about many Years ago. you can not say "3D" if you really experience with vision pro. it's not 3D, 'immersive video'. Totally diffrent. It almost same situation when Steve bring first iphone. Some tech gik people said iphone is not much diffrent blackberry and PDA, Palm and all functions already there. also said blackberry, PDA is only for 1% people.
Definitely WON'T change Hollywood. Don't expect the masses to adopt Vision Pro headsets. Don't get me wrong, I love the innovation and think it could be very useful with AR glasses (not headsets) in several years' time, but you're not going to see Hollywood movies and TV shows made with this tech and running on these headsets.
What with Wokewood collapsing? It will be interesting to see where a lot of this goes. Maybe indie output... But Hollywood as we once knew it is dying ....
It's all academic really. Who can afford the damn goggles and who wants to watch a movie while wearing googles? Nah...I'll stick with what I have for now.
So 180VR and Emmersive 3D is called Spatial Video now? And just like ten years ago you absolutely have to have the occular distance of human eyes if you don't want things to look miniature. So forget about iPhones and two tiny lenses and a prisms built into one small lens house from Canon. Guys! We have already been through all this! Tried and tested for almost 150 years! And 1080VR Theatre STILL have the limitation of being a single user experience and that's why it failed the last time. You really have to be filthy rich to buy an Apple Vision Pro at the price of a used car for all of your family. AND you are still going to discover that you can't really relax the eyes like you would a theatre screen and 50% of users experience motion sickness from these types of Head Mounted Displays...All minuses. Zero points this time around as well. The idea of stereoscopic cinema refuses to die. First invented in the late 19th century it still has not gone mainstream. And it's not going to this time either. Trust me.
Years ago Samsung in their nx line up had already creayed a 3d lens for consumer camera. They cam up with 2 awesome cameras nx500 and nx1 which still is used by enthusiast who have hacked the camera and unlocked its full potential. How I wish Samsung was still in the camera biz, they killed themselves without marketing their products properly.
@@ghostymtl NX1 has is the older brother nx500 came out a year later. Difference is nx1 being more beefier has mic input, record 120fps @ 1080p whereas nx500 records 120fps @ 720p. Tt being said NX500 has dynamic range upto 13.9 stops vs NX1 12 stops. The 120fps @ 720p is not an issue at all since hacking the camera we set and record at a highbit rate. Quality is great viewing it on a large acreen projected out. And additionally the autofocus on the nx500 is better and faster.
...oh boy... exciting news. Just simply entertained as far as where the industry is going. But also really concerned about AI and how creatives are having their work yanked. I'm not sure how to feel. Gotta wait and see honestly.
*NOPE ! 3D has always been a gimmick, which has an over 70 year history of movie making, which has NEVER caught on. There's a good reason for this. 1. A significant segment of the population has complained about headaches and severe eye strain while watching 3D content. This effect doesn't happen right away, it takes about two plus hours to show symptoms IF you are one of those segments of the population who are susceptible to this kind of disorientation and eye strain. 2. Equipment not compatible with standard 2D production equipment. I hope there will be a software solution in DaVinci Resolve, which will effectively blend 3D content for output as standard 2D content. 3. The constant need for special viewing apparatus in order to view the 3D Effect. What would be great is a way to view 3D material without the need of special glasses or goggles. IMHO, 3D will NEVER become mainstream until they can perfect a system which will allow viewing of the 3D Effect without the need to wear special viewing glasses or electronic goggles, which is, for many viewers, uncomfortable.*

apple is doing it for some entairtainment, but manufacturers like us are doing it to be a marketing tool for businesses. We also rent to those who do not have Apple Vision Pro. That's why important bro
That's the point of this workflow, people will be more enticed to buy a Vision Pro if they have exclusive entertainment to watch. Sounds silly but don't underestimate what people will pay for the cutting edge entertainment experience.

I'm a Member! And I wouldn't trade this 70" 3D Panasonic Plama for anything! There a about a dozen film created for 3D that deserve to be seen in 3D, Hugo, Spider Man Into the Spiderverse etc.
My guess is under $5K for the Blackmagic stereoscopic camera. That’s the most I’d pay for a gamble in new film tech. It’s fun creating beautiful content but it’s still a business at the end of the day.
Considering the URSA Mini 12k (the camera this is likely based off) is USD$6000, I definitely won't be lower than that. Probably USD$8000 at a minimum, which would be an absolute steal.
@@ziggybadans it’s based off the ursa Cine not the mini, which is an unreleased ~$16,000 camera so I’d imagine doubling the sensor and it being an incredibly niche device you’ll see it atleast at $20K if not more
@@ziggybadans the URSA 12K is traditional camera. This camera has a limited and specific use case. Blackmagic is known for being disruptive in terms of pricing. This is the perfect device for them to shock the industry.
The cost of the camera, the cheaper Canon or even the probably very affordable BMD (probably around $10K if it's like two URSA 12Ks in one body) isn't the real cost of producing that content. There's a reason there's so little of it. It's a tiny market and if you're going to produce for that market, it can't be something that's proprietary for Apple's Vision Pro. That product still doesn't have a market and might never have one. I predict that just like previous 3D booms, people will get tired of this format very fast.
the last 3d boom was centered on movies and it failed because people dont want to wear a headset for 2 hours straight. this new round might hold up if the prices are reasonable (for consumption)
3D is dead. Apple you are late the game. At IBC i saw so many 3D tvs with passive glasses! And the consumers got active 3D TVs , heavy glasses, ofoourse nobody want heavy glasses on their face for hours! 3D is dead Apple, your stupid Vison will die as well!
We're freaking doomed in this civilization, because we're obsessed with finding the next thing that's gonna excite us. We don't need it, it might even hold more dangers than benefits, but who cares, if it excites us for 6months, 1 year, 5years, let's do it. This is going nowhere, certainly not towards more genuine human happiness. (Let's just read "The Society of the Spectacle" by french author Guy Debord, for example (brace yourself, you'll have been warned)).
From what I understand, the owner of BMD is a billionaire who bought/started it out of love for the product and work. He is not doing it to be rich. I doubt he will sell it, so I suspect they will have to wait until he kicks the bucket.

I’m sorry but unless that camera and canon lens have other use cases beyond Apple Vision Pro I don’t foresee anyone buying them!. Because Vision Pro is an utter failure as expected. It’s sold in absolutely tiny amounts so therefore who in their right mind is going to spend even £1000 on a lens to create content for a device nobody is using and is already dead let alone a multiple thousand £ camera!. Bonkers I’d rather buy a sirui anamorphic lens than that crap canon thing!. Apple Vision Pro is and will be apples biggest disaster in its history!. It’s an abject failure.

I can do this w my quest 3 but same as vision pro it is pixelated but still amazing. And we have AR glasses now becoming more accessible that will allow us to view these videos without a bulky headset. Loving these moments. ❤
Truly, the key word, apart from the product and the whole vr process, is immersion. That's one of the main goals of filmmaking and this is a tool that took us one big step further to this.

A means of live previewing the raw footage from the timeline on a VR HMD/Vision - let alone proper live 3D VFX editing on that device will need to finally happen - otherwise, we are working somewhat blind.

I think you might have mixed it up...those were two separate announcements for two separate formats.
They said that Spatial Video could be created using the Canon Lens, with Final Cut Pro uploaded to Vimeo.They said that that workflow would be available this fall.
Then they moved on to the next section, explaining the "new gamechanging entertainment format" Apple Immersive Video, then they explained what it is, They said "Apple Immersive Video is 180 degree 8k immersive video with spatial audio".
Then they explained this other, second production workflow, which is a BlackMagtic Camera, the Ursa Cinema Immersive, which will record 8k per eye into BRaw Immersive (a new format I think). You will be able to edit this footage inside of Resolve Studio, and then prepare it for delivery using Apple Compressor.
Two separate formats, two separate workflows.

3D 180 is great, but 3D with a zoom lens to make 3D content for a regular video format in 4K - 8K is more practical and useful. Sony, JVC and Panasonic managed to do this ten years ago in 1080p - upgrade the old technology of 3D with the new sensors and processors. The you can shoot it just like it was with a. regular video camera, like 10 years ago.
I think any collaboration with tech is great - Seeing Nikon buying out Red and now Black magic, Canon and Apple working together, surly it has to be a match made in heaven. We need creators to be given the tools they need and not leave everything to AI - Just hope they price it right and to give everyone a chance.
Hey. Thanks for making this video! What is happening is that tech that has been in Hollywood for a long time now is coming to mainstream because it is finally affordable. James Cameron normally shoots in stereoscope for his films using 2 Sony cameras and that is why is films are so immersive and engaging. Technology has finally got to a place where this is more affordable to build and deliver to smaller film studios that don’t have James Cameron budgets. All in all I think that it is great!
Love the idea of the camera for giving the average person the ability to enjoy the reality of the world the way others enjoy it.
tbh I think the canon lens for Rmount is more interesting for most use cases - this will deliver reasonable quality for actual clients... buying a whole new specific blackmagic camera will be something exclusive to major prod companies for apple content or broadcast
Considering the 12k Cine camera body starts at $16k or thereabouts, that this camera will have two 12k sensors and not just one, this will be out of reach for most people. Just a guess, but I bet that this will be no less than $30k, and it may even reach $50k. Unless a production company has a lot of business creating immersive content, I doubt they would make the investment. BUT, I can see a market for renting out this equipment to video production companies that need it for specific projects.
Yes but in canada the basic Vision Pro is 5650$ tax in. If the price doesn't come down this product will flop. That camera is for sure 25K minimum.

Half of the point of regular , rectangularly 'framed' footage is the ability to control what is /not/ shown as much as composing what is shown. Even in 180VR, the likelihood is that anything narrative created with it will have the majority of the 'subject' in the front 60 degrees of view, with everything else just being a kind of ambient set dressing. Which brings us back to 'why not just make better standard-framed footage?'
Stereoscopic footage (a 2D frame but with depth perception) is a unique experience and certainly has been improving over the decades, but expanding the rectangular frame out to a whole hemisphere begs the question, 'For what? Peripheral ambience?'. There have been so few examples of good work made that actually make use of the extra visual real estate (outside of 'ambient set dressing with all the subject infront of you') that this camera will likely find itself more useful in non-narrative content like training videos or just pretty visual demos. Making something narrative/dramatic without being able to control where the viewer's attention is at any given moment is really quite difficult.

First think I found filming stuff on the Qoocam in 2020...how difficult it is to shoot anything and make it look good while controlling the audience's attention.
I picture a full on battlefield where you can watch the same film multiple times and view a different struggle/fight each time. I see your point to an extent but for me the new possibilities open up a whole new era of filmmaking. Current 2D will be like looking back at black and white Charlie Chaplin.
@@SethTaylor1 Honestly, the idea isn't that innovative and has been tried before but took off more in the PunchDrunk genre of theatre rather than the passive viewing experience of moveies. Punchdrunk allows the viewer to decide to follow an actor 'off-stage' to another set with an actor to follow their part of a larger multi-timeline story that collectively weaves together many different perspectives. This kind of multi-linear experience has been dabbled with in cinema a few times, most recently in a few Netflix films where, because they're on a digital/online platform, viewer's are given 'decision points' throughout the film to decide which way they want to follow the story. Giving them multiple possible watches from different perspectives, much like Punchdrunk theatre. So the idea has been worked before, this product really only brings stereoscopic viewing back in the form of a hemisphere rather than 'depth in a regular 2D rectangle' (cinema/tv etc). Which, while itself isn't that new as stereoscopic aquisition has been around a long time, nobody yet has been able to take the compositional 'frame' of a whole hemisphere and make something that can actually be controlled narratively. Only really just take 'normal' scenes in the front/center view that expands to include the surrounding environment, but otherwise has nothing of importance outside of that front 60degrees FOV.
Think of a two-person confrontation scene in a living room, sure, you can see what's hung on the walls or wether or how many windows there are, but the detail that really makes the scene drive the narrative and emotion of the scene are in the delivery and non-verbal of the acting talent. The only real use of stereo 180deg footage in that situation would be if the blocking moved the acting talent around the viewer to some kind of tension effect. But honestly, you're getting into theatre again. Which is fine, just not cinema. So I could actually see this digitising the theatre industry rather than removing the visual restrictions of the frame that makes cinema such a fine medium.
@@_burd I see your point for sure. Though to take the example of a living room conversation. It changes from just viewing the scene through a window, to actually being in the room. Yes there is nothing inherently interesting about the wallpaper but the immersion gained is unprecedented. Modern games now have larger budgets than any film and have A list voice acting and script writing. We expect to be able to choose where to look and not a forced perspective cut scene.
@@SethTaylor1 The thing is that i actually believe the 'window' that cinema (or any video/photo really) makes the viewer look through is the very thing that gives cinema/photography it's power to move a viewer. Through that creative restriction of what's seen and what's not, the creator of the peice is forced into making decisions into 'how' a scene is shown, not just /that/ it is shown in it's entirety with no direction or suggestion of what the viewer might want/need to see for that larger story's arc. In that, the narrative choices of a director can emerge and we can get wildly variant styles and possible emotional/intellectual arcs from the same kind of 'confrontation in a living room' scene just by deciding to cut a shot in a different place, sequence shots differently, or compose shots it a certain, motivated way. What I believe hemispheric/stereo aquisition does is remove the 'motivation' of all visuals given to the viewer, and off-loads all the visual/spatial selection (finding a particular view/frame in that scene from which to view what's happening) onto the viewer, who they themselves might not know where to be and how, leaving a potentially brilliant scene falling flat because it's dependant on the weaker directorial/editorial decisions of a viewer. Now, I don't think it's impossible and that '3D just bad'- but there are some real challenges to overcome in deciding to do that to the viewer that I don't think has had a proper answer from those that have tried yet.
I can certainly see it's use in other experiences/mediums like theatre or gaming (from dedicated VR to just head tracking and wider FOV on regular views.) for sure! Though the difference between these and more narrative story telling experiences like cinema is that even games need to cut to an edited, shot-based cinematic cutscene to collapse the viewer's potntial perspectives on a story they've gained during the gameplay down to one, curated story that the director has put together. Again, it would be cool to see someone or a team of people try and make stories that work in the VR format, or even to push it further into multi-linear storytelling. But even just removing the frame of view and offloading all those decisions on the viewer is a huge directorial/editorial challenge to overcome 🤔 I can imagine the critical part of the story playing out in

I hope Apple can pull it off but the capture and display issues limit the market to a sliver of Apple’s wealthiest devotees. So how many of them will jump on board? Not many I’m guessing…
I wonder if James Cameron will switch to the Blackmagic Ursa Cine Immersive camera system for future spatial films. He developed his own 3D camera system for the Avartar series, but it is much bigger and bulkier.

You’re so right to be excited. The answer to mass adoption of spatial computing/XR was never gaming. It was…EVERYTHING else. This seems very similar to Tesla's approach with electric vehicles, without government subsidies (at least for now).

Definitely immersive but this needs to motivate innovators to create a way to see the 3D without VR goggles. James Cameron was working on technology for theatres to have 3D with no glasses needed and was hoping to have it figured out by the release of avatar 2.
I have made standing, stable immersive content shot on Canon RF 180° 2.8 on R5C and even in the oculus 2 it was the most vivid 3D experience I have ever had. I have others testimonials to prove it! I can imagine a future with more 3D and an a flooding audience. I agree this market has real value.

the problem with immersion its the way of viewing. it needs specific contraption, gadget, hardware etc. the vision pro, other VR headset, las vegas sphere, etc... heck people even dont buy curve displays to experience more immersion.
curved displays are made to help the distortion issue of super wide frames. and yes, we will always need some type of "headset" to see 3D, its just in the nature of how the eyes process information. same way you will never hear Spatial Audio without headphones. the eyes and ears need to be isolated.

It wasn't cancelled, it's just on a slower timetable to put their focus on the lower cost Vision. Vision Pro 2 feels like a late 2026 timeframe
How wild that something so old is new again. I'm pretty stoked though, I had a cool gig doing 360 3D VFX and CGI for horror film experiences. It made me a VR fan.

Been there, done that. I was the lead engineer on Premiere Pro's immersive video team. At the time, it was the industry leader for cutting 360 and VR180 footage. People will jump into the tech early just because it's Apple - they did it with Google and Facebook half a decade ago, too. And then the marketing dollars will dry up because no one will consume the content.
The Vision Pro is the best way to consume stereoscopic content, for sure, for the fraction of a percent of the population who can both afford the device and want to watch such passive content.

Future devices will get cheaper like everything else in tech. Everyone thought the original iPhone at $599 was crazy expensive, and now everyone has a mobile phone with a lot of people carrying $1,500 phones. I also see the world of movie creation becoming more engaging and interactive and less passive.

dont think you need a wide lens for 3d. the whole point is that you can look around.
I don't see this process that much difference to 360 cameras. The problem with 360 is that we need good lighting, and the picture quality is sub-par. If a lens can be thrown on a standard mirroless, software makes it like the framing we are use too, it may become more popular. The wide viewing is gr8, but currently 360 has limitations. These type of lenses need to fit seamlessly with standard footage.

My cost estimate would be between 8000-10000 USD for the camera. I’m just waiting for this patchup to also allow Prores RAW on to DaVinci Resolve. Will this be game changing? Absolutely. By the time we have Quest Pro 3 and Quest 5 out, there will be a lot of demand for the content and I’m sure BMD will find a way to make things cross-compatible. The video itself can possibly be reused in a 2D environment I suspect, so the camera will be a brilliant purchase with a bonus ‘cherry on top’. What mount do you think it’ll be? EF/MFT/L mount?
I suspect you need to more than double that number unfortunately. Their 12K single chip/single lens camera is already in at $15k so best guess would be $25k

It is Blackmagic's camera, so it makes sense they'd want to promote their software too. Besides, Apple has made it clear that FCP is targeted towards content creators while Resolve is targeted towards professionals.

Shouldn't we be asking how this new format will be viewed? Will we all have to invest in new Monitors, TV's and Phones? Or glasses or goggles? Or will it work seamlessly with current display units?

Fantastic move for Apple. However, spherical 360 has been a thing for a long time and is supported natively on here and on Facebook with myriad devices already in market (Meta Quest etc). Making content for those is a nightmare presently. My favourite video on RUclips is all about reinjecting 360 meta data back into an unrolled spherical video that was dubbed, cut and graded in Resolve🤣.

Apple already announced an AI 3-D photo converter for Vision Pro. That means video conversion is right around the corner and it will only get better and better to the point where 3-D cameras are irrelevant. So in 50 years down the road every single one of your memories, every video you’ve ever taken can be viewed back in 3-D. Every RUclips video you’ve ever uploaded will have an option to be viewed in 3-D automatically in less than five years

If the R5C and the dual fish eye lens was good enough to film immersive content so far, why aren’t they promoting that as an option? It would be nice to use a system that’s already available and start now.
The R5C resolution is too low. 8K sensor is divided between the two lenses making 4K per eye. When you stretch that out over 180 degrees, it’s simply not enough and becomes kind of blurry. Especially for details not super close to you. This BM camera solves that. Also, the R5C shoots max 60fps. You want to be higher. 90-120fps to make everything smooth. The R5C is the minimum spec to do this kind of content, but not ideal.
rigging 2 cameras together really sucks unless they are synced like how the ZCam does it.

Apple will probably release a new Vr headset every year getting better and better and same with meta and other companies. Add Ai to the mix and automation and boom we could get INSANE tech for super cheap in the future or even free if we automate like everything

Unfortunately RF-S 3.9mm does not work on R5C, but it does work (not officially supported) on R10 and R50 (with few options disable in post).

So 180VR and Emmersive 3D is called Spatial Video now? And just like ten years ago you absolutely have to have the occular distance of human eyes if you don't want things to look miniature. So forget about iPhones and two tiny lenses and a prisms built into one small lens house from Canon. Guys! We have already been through all this! Tried and tested for almost 150 years! And 1080VR Theatre STILL have the limitation of being a single user experience and that's why it failed the last time. You really have to be filthy rich to buy an Apple Vision Pro at the price of a used car for all of your family. AND you are still going to discover that you can't really relax the eyes like you would a theatre screen and 50% of users experience motion sickness from these types of Head Mounted Displays...All minuses. Zero points this time around as well. The idea of stereoscopic cinema refuses to die. First invented in the late 19th century it still has not gone mainstream. And it's not going to this time either. Trust me.
Years ago Samsung in their nx line up had already creayed a 3d lens for consumer camera. They cam up with 2 awesome cameras nx500 and nx1 which still is used by enthusiast who have hacked the camera and unlocked its full potential. How I wish Samsung was still in the camera biz, they killed themselves without marketing their products properly.

@@ghostymtl NX1 has is the older brother nx500 came out a year later. Difference is nx1 being more beefier has mic input, record 120fps @ 1080p whereas nx500 records 120fps @ 720p. Tt being said NX500 has dynamic range upto 13.9 stops vs NX1 12 stops. The 120fps @ 720p is not an issue at all since hacking the camera we set and record at a highbit rate. Quality is great viewing it on a large acreen projected out. And additionally the autofocus on the nx500 is better and faster.
This camera will not change Hollywood.

*NOPE ! 3D has always been a gimmick, which has an over 70 year history of movie making, which has NEVER caught on. There's a good reason for this. 1. A significant segment of the population has complained about headaches and severe eye strain while watching 3D content. This effect doesn't happen right away, it takes about two plus hours to show symptoms IF you are one of those segments of the population who are susceptible to this kind of disorientation and eye strain. 2. Equipment not compatible with standard 2D production equipment. I hope there will be a software solution in DaVinci Resolve, which will effectively blend 3D content for output as standard 2D content. 3. The constant need for special viewing apparatus in order to view the 3D Effect. What would be great is a way to view 3D material without the need of special glasses or goggles. IMHO, 3D will NEVER become mainstream until they can perfect a system which will allow viewing of the 3D Effect without the need to wear special viewing glasses or electronic goggles, which is, for many viewers, uncomfortable.*

That's the point of this workflow, people will be more enticed to buy a Vision Pro if they have exclusive entertainment to watch. Sounds silly but don't underestimate what people will pay for the cutting edge entertainment experience.

My guess is under $5K for the Blackmagic stereoscopic camera. That’s the most I’d pay for a gamble in new film tech. It’s fun creating beautiful content but it’s still a business at the end of the day.

Considering the URSA Mini 12k (the camera this is likely based off) is USD$6000, I definitely won't be lower than that. Probably USD$8000 at a minimum, which would be an absolute steal.
its an Ursa with two sensors. it will most likely be WAY more expensive than 5k. I doubt they're making it as a prosumer piece of kit.
@@ziggybadans it’s based off the ursa Cine not the mini, which is an unreleased ~$16,000 camera so I’d imagine doubling the sensor and it being an incredibly niche device you’ll see it atleast at $20K if not more
@@ziggybadans the URSA 12K is traditional camera. This camera has a limited and specific use case. Blackmagic is known for being disruptive in terms of pricing. This is the perfect device for them to shock the industry.
The cost of the camera, the cheaper Canon or even the probably very affordable BMD (probably around $10K if it's like two URSA 12Ks in one body) isn't the real cost of producing that content. There's a reason there's so little of it. It's a tiny market and if you're going to produce for that market, it can't be something that's proprietary for Apple's Vision Pro. That product still doesn't have a market and might never have one.
I predict that just like previous 3D booms, people will get tired of this format very fast.
the last 3d boom was centered on movies and it failed because people dont want to wear a headset for 2 hours straight. this new round might hold up if the prices are reasonable (for consumption)
3D is dead. Apple you are late the game. At IBC i saw so many 3D tvs with passive glasses! And the consumers got active 3D TVs , heavy glasses, ofoourse nobody want heavy glasses on their face for hours! 3D is dead Apple, your stupid Vison will die as well!

From what I understand, the owner of BMD is a billionaire who bought/started it out of love for the product and work. He is not doing it to be rich. I doubt he will sell it, so I suspect they will have to wait until he kicks the bucket.
He’s an engineer really smart Australian guy that wanted to make affordable cinema for the people I really hope they never sell to Apple.

I’m sorry but unless that camera and canon lens have other use cases beyond Apple Vision Pro I don’t foresee anyone buying them!. Because Vision Pro is an utter failure as expected. It’s sold in absolutely tiny amounts so therefore who in their right mind is going to spend even £1000 on a lens to create content for a device nobody is using and is already dead let alone a multiple thousand £ camera!. Bonkers I’d rather buy a sirui anamorphic lens than that crap canon thing!. Apple Vision Pro is and will be apples biggest disaster in its history!. It’s an abject failure.
It’s still a gimmick.
