BBB #21: OBDLink LX install and setup on Yamaha Tenere 700

  • Here we install and set up a bluetooth OBDLink LX unit on the Yamaha Tenere, and configure it to run with an Android phone using the OBDLink app and also the Drive Mode Dashboard V2 app.
Why? If you’re interested in how to get diagnostics and real-time info from your bike’s engine management computer, then you need an On Board Diagnostics (OBD) unit. These plug into the OBD port that pretty much every car and bike has these days. It will read fault codes and provide a real time data stream from all the bike’s sensors. Special bonus - you can use it in your car too.
For the Yamaha, and adapter cable is needed to take the 4-pin Yamaha output and convert it to a standard OBD connector.
Why use the OBDLink LX unit? Other OBD units continue to consume power even when the bike/car is turned off. You think it’s all great until you try to start up a couple of days later only to find the battery is flat. This unit detects that the bike/car is turned off, and powers itself down which is excellent.
You can find the conversion lead and the OBDLink LX on Amazon. I won’t put links in as people bleat about affiliates and making money which is really boring. They forget that we pay our own money for this stuff and this channel is not monetised anyway. Anyhow, if you want to find them, go and search on Amazon for a Yamaha OBD link adapter cable and an OBDLink LX.

Hello! The gear indicator still needs more work BUT, please notice, if you do the GEAR ASSIST using the OBD Speed data and then you switch to GPS Speed mode you need to run the gear indicator assist again.
Still its always cool to see people using our stuff! As always we will keep improving it!

Very cool. Might have to pop one on my T7.
A good laugh when the "weird people" came around.
What gloves are you using? I really like that twist lock.

It’s a Halvarassons glove with the Boa fastening thing. Actually quite good but a bit tricky to release sometimes.

It's always fun to see what kind of playfulness is indulged in. T 7 drivers buy them specially because electronics are not s.
By the way, the new WR T7 has more gadgetry on board.

Yep I saw that but my dealer offered a derisive trade in for mine against a WR. Does look good though.

Why does it not work on my Super Tenere 1200? (2014).
I get a red cross when the unit wants to connect with the bike (last step).

”let’s get away from these weird people” then you start driving on the left (wrong) side of the road 😄

Hi....does this OBD work with 690?

    • @andrewtobin3830

I believe it will but you will likely need another adapter plug cable

Doesnt work on my 701 or 690, freezes up, just tried again, rpm jumped up to 4000rpm & froze & wouldn't reset, even when the cache wash clear & still shows 4000rpm, if it does show engine temp, it freezes & doesnt change, cant calibrate the throttle as always tells me the dongle is disconnected, better off using a reliable app like Torque Pro, works 1st time every time with 4 different blue tooth dongle I have
