How to Make Digital Camo Patterns in Photoshop

  • Today's tutorial is kind of a follow-on from my guide to creating custom camouflage patterns in Adobe Photoshop from back in 2019. In that previous tutorial I shared some useful techniques for creating a variety of camo pattern styles using nothing but Photoshop filters.
All those camo patterns are comprised of random blobs and shapes, so this tutorial will focus on creating the more modern digital pattern styles that are made up of tiny pixel-like squares. Using a similar process, we can create disruptive digital camo patterns that can be regenerated with a random result every time. By modifying the colour scheme, we can even replicate modern day military camouflage patterns such as the US Marines MARPAT camo, or the Canadian CADPAT.

Hi Sir. May I request that you make a digital pattern like the digital desert camouflage with added olive color? Please!

  • @fabr5747

Digital camo IS NOT simply a pixel like camo !!! A digital camo goes far beyond. It adds one component which is essential to it which is analyzing regions, their natural colours and define the colours this way ! And this analysis is made by softwares.
For the lack of repetition, as a concept, this is great. But in reality, industrially it's a nightmare and will cost so much more !
And in terms of camo quality, the lack of repetition is both good and not good.
Good because it might be future proof from smart reconnaissance system that would spot some repetitions of colours of a data base. But it triggers one problem, the "risky" shapes !
Our animal brain is trained to recognize threats. Among those, we recognize eyes and face shapes / animal face shapes in everything. By watching some rainbow, your brain will recognize a face without you not actively focusing on the clouds ! Therefore with a random pattern design, the problem is to find at some point this kind of unlucky shape.
When designing a camo, the first part is to try different approaches. Pixelated, geometric shapes, dots, traditional shape of the european woodland, etc... The second part is to define whether there is a need for two or three different layers. And depending on that, before designing it, it is important to know how many colours are expected to be on it.
The first / main layer can be micro details, things or colours you can see from a close enough distance. Then as a second you have a macro design. And then a third one could be a "disrupting" layer. Let's say your camo design has a horizontal like design or focus. then adding some verticality to it as well will make our lazy brain less likely to see it as nature is made of different colours, shapes and orientations. Once the design is large enough and adapted to the printer dimensions, the review part starts.
And the review is a tedious part. squares are cut, each squares are reviewed. On a second printed cloth, the squares are cut differently, larger, smaller, or at different places.
And with the random aspect, it doesn't make sense.

Yeah if only it was a video which you can replay at any given time. Plus there is a slow down button. Or you know you can pause the video. The only waste of time was you typing your own comment.
