So nice to see someone talk about the “craft” of shooting videos and not focus just on the “gear”. Great tips. And you are a great speaker and presenter. Thanks for sharing!
@Robert L. agree with you! Whenever I watched other videos I would often feel worse than I was before clicking on the video as they made it look like it was because of the gear they used. But here the way he explains and show us about the skill rather than gear made feel so much better. I am new to the channel, this is the second video I watched from Thomas Alex Norman and I am subscribing.
Teaching is such an overlooked skilled, but it’s amazing how you actually break things down to the smallest most basic details. Something that would come so naturally to you, after doing it for so long, you still manage to put yourself in the shoes of a beginner and lay down the foundation. It’s actually such a difficult thing to do once you become well versed in a skill, so I just wanted to say kudos, you’re amazing at it!
Just happened upon your video and was mesmerized. I have literally watched hundreds of hours of nature photographers explain their craft, and hear them talk about their b roll. To watch you explain, and demonstrate how it’s done is such a wonderful new experience. I love how you connect with nature and make the ordinary extraordinary.
1. Great job giving insight into your thought process and the "why?" 2. Love the picture-in-picture showing what you're capturing as you capture it 3. Super cool to see previews of the final edit as you go Do you shoot everything on 60+ fps so that you can pick and choose what you play in slow motion when you are in edit, or do you make the choice before capturing?
Include my vote on the frame rate question. I'd guess at minimum that it would be 60 or higher. I've never tried to slow down a video that was taken at 24 fps but it seems like it would come out choppy. I'm learning a lot from Thomas' videos and do appreciate his teachings.
Can't answer it for sure, but from my perspective I would say that it would be ideal to make the choice before capturing. This way you can take advantage of the 24fps cinematic look. If you shoot everything 60fps, your timeline will have to be 60fps and you will lose the cinematic effect for all shots that are not slowed down. Sounds like a lot of work, doesn't it? It is, haha! That's why we appreciate it.
I'm new to filming, I used to photograph for many years and that's something completely different. I noticed that you turn incredibly simple things into something beautiful, things that I just didn't notice with these nice tips. Making a movie is not just about pressing "rec" because after a few minutes no one watches the normal movies. I was fascinated by B-roll, shots with beautiful music make a real film. I still have a lot to learn, but the way you convey something in terms of technique and especially "looking" has given me a spark. Thank you for your insight.
This was the most helpful tutorial for filming I have seen on RUclips, others can tend to over-complicate and therefore kind of alienate, but this was super helpful! Thanks
it is always nice to find someone who does gentle, clear, well articulated instruction. Clearly you know what you are doing, and it shows. Thanks kindly.
What truly beautiful footage. My favorites are: "underexposed little moss hill", "pine branch sun sprinkle" and 'reflections in puddle'. Very inspiring!
After watching your few videos, I am really happy to see how you can get cinematic footage without any tools... you are an amazing presenter. Thank you sooooooo very much. Without gimble or with gimble, cinematic shooting is all POSSIBLE.
I am merely a beginner with a huge appetite to learn. Out of the many videos that I have watched on this type of subject, yours is for me, leaps ahead. I totally enjoyed the clear and concise manner that you delivered the content. Thank you and subbed . Cheers Paul
Really really enjoying these behind the scene style videos. It's incredibly helpful to not only see how you are getting these shots, but also to understand the thought process behind why you are choosing the shots that you're after. Seeing the picture-in-picture view is also great. Shots that seem somewhat average at first end up looking really fantastic when properly edited and placed in context. Thanks so much for sharing!
I watched this whilst having my lunch at my desk, instantly transported in to a world of relaxation. Roll on the weekend when I can get out in to the woods and give these techniques a go. Thank you 👍
+Thomas Alex Norman, sometimes we look at a scene and dismiss it because we can't "see" anything worth filming. You just shattered that mindset and I thank you. Keep at it.
Generally, I do not resort to name calling...but, YOU are a freakin' WIZARD. It's so key to first see the flat, not yet graded "what you saw when you were there" version, because it gives me confidence that all the seeming "crap" I'm shooting, can get magically sorted...one day when I figure out what "post" means, where this mythical land is, and how to get there! Thanks.
Thomas, you are BACK!!! This is what it's about. Good quality content, amazing demonstrations and explanations of what you're doing and why. Showing the end result build as you progress is something that's all too often missing. You're demonstrating what can be achieved with minimal equipment. This is very appealing. You've done the travel video academy, you need to do one for more general videography techniques. In my opinion, of all your seriously excellent videos this one has been the most inspiring of all.
I'm just getting into the video making, and this was incredibly helpful! Clear instructions, great examples, especially seeing the behind the scenes and then the final result. Thank you!
The way you have explained the nuances is just amazing. As a beginner, it has taught me to be patience and have an eye for details. Great Video Editing. Thanks.
I love love love the way you broke it all down. Its inspirational. Planning a nature shoot for my channel as a newbie and this has helped a ton. Cheers
Hi Thomas! Thanks for another behind-the-scene course. I like that kind of videos because from these I learn so much! Please keep on showing us how to create a film. It feels just like 101 Coaching. Thanks!!
Finally I found a video which actually teaches you what you want other rubbish talk waste of time. I finally learned how to shoot video for cinematic shots. Thank you.
Brilliant once again. There are things there I hadn’t thought of. Things like, establishing a scene & focusing on scenery there then moving on to something else. It helps make things so much easier & probably less stressful trying to get footage.
You’re the best fuckin informative videography channel on youtube! Little annoying pointless rambles, alot of straight to the point & damn informative tips.
Thomas , I can sense by your footage you have so much respect for nature. My wife and I just visited Renesse in Prov of Zeeland in THE Netherlands. Especially the dunes and forest around Nieuw Haamstede were impressive . Grts from Belgium.
I’m filming a project in Colorado on an elk hunt in September and this video helped a lot! I feel way more comfortable with finding ways to capture quality b roll now.
@@pashaaziz unfortunately the travel insurance does not cover theft of belongings when unattended to. The robber broke into our Villa and stole my equipment while we were out.

Thank you for this nice sweet piece of nature! this was really useful for me to learn how to shoot better BRolls by telling a story!! Keep up and looking forward to see more stuff about your album !
This video was awesome, the steps were so clear and precise, I feel like I can actually make some good videos keeping these tips in mind, thanks a lot.
I am usually lazy to comment but when I saw your video I couldn't resist. Very well explained tips for shooting cinematic shots.Perfect video that I was looking for. Thank you for sharing.
Really enjoyed your presentation. I was down at the beach the other day and I said to my wife I love being here there is just so much inspiration and things to see. She looked at me strangely and said what stuff? My eyes are already seeing as you have shown but I wasn't sure how to assemble it for a video. Thank you it has helped immensely.

Thank you this was excellent. I've always concentrated on framing and locking down my b-roll on a tripod, but adding that bit of movement makes the world of difference.
I’ve just bought a smooth 4 gimbal and it has spurred me on no end. Your advice and techniques here are just what I wanted. Thanks. Btw it is illegal to say ‘What’s up guys’in British forests.

I got the same question as to whether you shoot in 24/60/120 fps?
Another vote for wondering what FPS you shot with. Looks very cinematic!
