Very thankful for your kind attitude about the comfort of your home for older people. I can't hop up into a barstool or sit in a low sofa (I'm 73 and have some mobility issues) and you're the first young person who ever mentioned how that might affect your guests. Not that you should have to take that into consideration in every room. I also really like your encouragement that home decor should reflect your life and be unique to you, not the average cookie-cutter art.

What I find makes a home so uninviting is the powder room/guest bathroom. I hate when they have old/dirty/colored/holiday hand towels (I think they should be white and I prefer them folded at the side of the sink so I know it is clean), minimal toilet paper on the roll, and no extra rolls in full view, and a strong candle burning in there.

Great episode. I always enjoy your perspective.
However ... as a Canadian if you don't take your shoes off when you come into a home you would be considered rude. Removing shoes/boots, and for at least half of the year, a big poofy winter coat is just considered good manners here in Canada. When I was in college and didn't have a TV (yes, I'm old) I used to have colouring books and a basket of crayons and small puzzles on my coffee table. It gave folks things to do with their hands during visits.
Thanks for the advice and give your puppies a pat for me.

I appreciate the scent comment. My allergies are s bad i cant get close the an all natural essential oil plug in , let alone an air freshener or candle and it is so hard to be a gracious guest when you feel like you have to hold your breath. I love the open coffee table book idea; i dread this trend of placing vases and candles on top of books. Books are functional art. When people use books more as pedestals than books, i judge them and assume they dont actually read their books

I have too many friends and clients who've spent tons of money on their new house or remodel but have little to no art because they and their partner can't come to an agreement on anything. Thus, their spaces look unfinished and
boring. As you mentioned there are soooo many places to find great pieces, whether that is your grandma's basement, a festival, an antique store, your own photos, etc...

Thanks for another great video. I don't care for a mountain of shoes at the door, and yes someone took my husband's shoes and left his larger out of shape scruffy ones, when he left the party before us. Funny but true. I usually bring a bag with slippers to change into leaving my shoe's in the bag stashed away from traffic. I've seen people step and crush good shoes as they walk over them to the door.

Of course, as always, youre the best. I love that you actually brought up photos and art. I've been meaning to ask you how you really feel about canvas art? Oh, and yes, I heard that same rumor going around that family photos (which I make into a gallery wall) shouldn't be in your main space, but only in your bedrooms. Hey, I love my family and proud, so with that said you just made me feel even more confident keeping it as is. ❤️❤️❤️ Thanks as always Garrett.

    • @GarrettLeChic
      @GarrettLeChic  2 года назад

Hi Donna! Thanks for your lovely comment. I personally like art in various mediums that is actually hand done by an artist whether famous or not. I think tasteful amounts of family or important photos are fine in various parts of a home. I don’t hang photos in the main rooms in my home. I have art I want to display, but I do have a gallery wall mainly of celebrities my husband have met or know that are important to us on a gallery wall that is not in a central room. This all really depends of your personal style and levels of formality in your home. There is no one right way because peoples’ homes and lifestyles are different. Every situation needs to be handled on a case by case basis. This is why we cover many design and decor styles versus me just pushing my own style because in real life that is not how interior design and decorating works in my opinion. ✨✨✨

With all the Modern Organic going on, if you're looking for functional, entertaining coffee table decor: look into wooden "puzzle" games. Like the Burr puzzle e.g.
Wooden blocks/rubics cube type of gamey stuff.

Another awesome video, Garrett! I have finally gotten my picture and arrangement and I think everything looks cohesive, uncluttered, and clean. One small problem is I have 2 smaller oval pictures, (maybe 10" tall) that need a good place where they won't look out of place and cluttered. These paints are near and dear to me. Not only do I love how they look, but because my mom painted them many years ago... Any ideas where pictures like these could go? Hard question since you can't see my house, but maybe in general, where would you place something like this? Thank you for any suggestions!

Oh I have one to add! As someone with chronic migraines who is very light sensitive, intense overhead lighting is very difficult for me to hang out in. Even worse than that is any light fixture with exposed bulbs that are at eye level, so if I'm stuck in a seat that looks directly at an exposed bulb on a fixture or lamp, I'm probably having a bad time. Even for those with a less extreme condition than myself, I think most appreciate spaces with good ambient lighting at night.

Dog owners need to bathe their dogs. They need to wash the dog bedding, pillows, special places, etc. They need to vacuum or sweep up the dog hair,
especially on the sofas and chairs where guests will sit. Walking into a house that smells "doggy" is unpleasant. And all the candles in the world can't overcome
that kind of smell. The same can be said for cat owners, bird owners, etc.

It's maybe not decoration per se, but part of how a guest is welcomed and how the mood is set:
Televisions should be switched off, unless we are meeting to watch something specific together, like Eurovision. Otherwise, a TV in the Background is something I find rude and uninviting. A good choice of background music on the other hand is a wonderful subtle gesture of respect and effort to make the space feel inviting.

My husband is as sensitive to scents (maybe more so) as you are. Other than the opening of windows to let the fresh air in, what we will do - on occasion if we have guests over - is just cut a few lavender sprigs and place in very small vases. One in the bathroom they will use and one in the bedroom they will use if they are spending the night. Lavender grows well in pots so a plant can be kept on the deck if a person does not have a garden.

    Hi Garrett!!
    Love love your videos❤️❤️
My husbands family is something else.. we have two adorable dogs, very well behaved by the way.. every time they(husbands family)come visit they complain about them(the adorable dogs)being in the living room with us.. they sniff and say hi very politely(the dogs 😂 )but his family hate that.. and no, they are not allergic to dogs, How do I tell them that it’s my dogs home!! I hate putting them away in the laundry room every time they come! 😠
I get so happy watching your videos, they feel very relatable, I have watched other designers that say things like NO family pictures in your living room, or paint your whole house black.. or only white lights in your Christmas tree.. 😂
Your videos feel like if you were family ❤️❤️ love that for me ❤️❤️❤️

Great tips as always! To go along with scent, I think temperature is always important. You mention older guests, and they won’t be at all comfortable if a house is only 65 degrees in the winter. And nothing is worse than a dank and tepid house in the summer because the owners “don’t like” air conditioning. It should be on for the guests, imo.

Besides good housekeeping, a spritz of fabreeze in the shoe closet, no stinky dish towels, a clean fridge, and no overt pet odors like a litter box will keep the house fresh.

i love how Garret does give realistic solutions to desing specially when we talk about hosting people or house parties, using your dinner chairs to seat you guest at the living room is so relatable and functional, most people will only limit to tell you to consider the number of seating for every guest, but cmon those "fancy" massive AD living rooms with huge couches look so ugly and end up having a really unpersonal lobbby vibe. I don't care how much you love to throw partys at home im quite sure that having 5+ couches at the living room aint something pretty to see every day.

Hi Garrett, I’m with you on smells in a space. I always feel like if a home smells strongly of some type of “perfume “ that the people are trying to cover up something unappealing. The same with someone who wears an over abundance of perfume or after shave. Just take a shower! Or cleanup what ever it is you’re trying to mask.

i'd like to add to the list, so many living rooms I see online that discriminate against older guests. Younger viewers of Garret's age who are fit and fully able bodied may not realise how many older people have lingering injuries, e.g. knee and ankle and back problems, which may not be apparent. these invisible problems can make it hard for them to lower themselves onto a low sofa, and even harder or painful for them to get themselves out of it -- especially if the sofa has no arm rests. If your older guests make a beeline for the kitchen/dining table to sit down, it is usually a sign! Unless you are never going to socialise with anyone over 50 ( e.g. no parents, aunties, uncles grandparents etc visiting ever), every lounge room should always have at least one if not 2 chairs that are easy to get in and out of,( i.e. the seat is medium height and has arms); what is known as "a comfortable armchair." The seat should be short ,not long ( as older people have shorter legs generally) and should be properly padded, not hard. A sofa will never do, regardless of how expensive it is, as it will only have one armrest next to the guest for them to lean on(if any!) and will be too squishy and low to get out of- or even too awkward to lean forward to reach their cup of coffee. Older persons should never be offered the sofa to sit on. There should always be another option - a firm padded arm chair of reasonable seat height. It's dead easy to find really stylish ones; and your older guests will no longer dread having to sit in your loungeroom!

Nothing including a coffee table should be overdressed. You can still dress a coffee table appropriately so that guests who wish a cup of coffee to be served in a formal living room will have room to place it.

I just love this video. I work from home, students for ESL classes and the entryway is so important! I spent a lot of time getting it right, as I found it really effects how they perform in class, and how they bond with me. I am so happy when one of my students comments on the entryway, they usually tell me that they feel so comfortable in my home because it has so much positive energy. I have designed our home for comfort, for us, our pets, and for any guests, students who come over. Space, scent and energy are so important. Love Cornelius, he's so cute.

unpopular opinion - I hate pillows on the couch/chairs. They look pretty but they're not functional in any way. I have to move them to sit down unless I'm perched on the edge, which is not fun. If you want a color or texture, just use a throw or something.

As always excellent tips. I love artwork and when I travel I purchase local art instead of those kitschy souvenirs. Re the entryway, when designing my home that was one of the things I made sure to have - is a foyer and not just walk right into a room. Good morning Beautiful LeChic Fam!
My husband & I were once in a House Tour and the host asked us to remove our shoes. We had no problem with this request, but there wasn't a place to sit down or to hang our coats.
It's like... Welcome to this beautiful home, just throw your things anywhere. 😱
I get what your saying about too many pillows and I definitely remember a time when we went to a Birthday party, the host had a large sectional with tons of pillows and no one sat on it. Oh well 😅. The struggle is real!
Love the great inspiration pics in this video!
    Until next time, hugs xx

🤦 A home tour without a place to sit or hang your coat??? Isn't the whole point to make potential buyers _feel like they can live there comfortably??_ Unless you're touring a museum home, there's no way you're going to feel like that house can be your living space!

    • @rachaelbruesch6306
      @rachaelbruesch6306 2 года назад

@@ophilianecr That's exactly how we felt! The person showing us the home was the realtor & the owner, so you'd think she would know this. Plus the fact that there were so many personal design/items throughout the house that didn't allow us to see the full potential of the home. Needless to say, we never returned for a second showing. 🤷🏼‍♀️

My neighbor has the scent overload, I stopped by there one day to give her some fresh eggs, and I almost gagged on the smells, we chatted for a few minutes, all the while trying to get back outside to the porch. When I finally made it to car, my hubby wrinkled his nose and asked, "did she spray you with perfume?" We had to roll down the windows so the scents would leave. Ha ha
