I think this page is the best interior design channel on youtube, and I have watched ALOT since I bought my house. The ideas are so simple and elevated that there are options in everyone's budget. I have been going back watching all/most of your videos and there is one thing that I have not seen an interior designer talk about at ALL, and I once asked a facebook group and they were VERY rude. I would love some tips on how to display 'collectibles' in an elevated way. My husband has so MANY statues (Think batman, spiderman, graphic novels.) Which, I love those things too, but I don't want them all over my house when company comes over. We have really tried to purge it down to only nice pieces, which some of them are expensive. (Like $100-$200), but how can we display them in such a way where they dont just look like toys? No one seems to have valid answers for me other than "give them their own room"... If I had an empty room, this wouldnt be an issue lol. Thanks for the great content!

I collect Barbies, which plenty of people think is cheesy or creepy, but I love them! I think they're little works of art. For a long time I did not have a dedicated room for them and I displayed them in my dining room in a wall of bookshelves with glass doors. They were a conversation piece every time someone new came over. I liked having them contained in one place, where they could be displayed behind glass. I think it helped them appear intentional and artistic, rather than haphazard. Hope this helps!

    • @madisonaustin7020

@@colleenjohnson5902 Having something behind glass has really been my only idea, like a nice modern display case! I am still looking for the right piece, but that's a great idea! I used to collect barbies as a kid up through adulthood, but had to sell them when my grandma moved (I kept them at her house) because she nor I had any room at all. I sold all the ones in boxes and kept the open ones full of memories.

I think you could display your husbands collectibles in a display case, perhaps one with a solid color background ( like black or white) to provide some contrast so the statues stand out. I would make sure whatever you display is inside the case, and not on top. That way you’re showing off specific pieces and it doesn’t look cluttered. Also, you don’t have to display them all at once. You can display a hand full of them and rotate them out.

I think a book shelf should be styled as a library. What I mean, is the books should be spine showing, so you can see what the book is. Why on earth would people put the books on shelf with the spine hidden, this defeats the purpose of having the books 📚. If you don’t read the books, or treasure them, then don’t have books. Your just collecting dust collectors. Take care Garrett, look forward to all your videos as they are so informative and eye opening. I certainly learn a lot of great decorating ideas from you. As always, another great video. When my now 25 year old daughter was a baby, I was watching Lynette Jennings and she said if you are hanging art in a hallway, only hang it on one side because if you hang it on both, it will make your hallway look too narrow or bottle- necked. I have followed that rule ever since because I found it actually does make a difference visually and spacially.

Great video as always ☺️

Husband doesn’t like fireplaces; apparently, neither did the prior owners of our house, because they removed it completely. You can even see where it used to be, because they left the decorative flooring where it used to be. (TBH, we don’t use fireplaces much where we live, so they’re purely decorative and just take up valuable space.)
But I love a mantel for displaying art. In our old place, we’d layered a bunch of smaller pieces with varied heights on top of each other. It looked great! Always got compliments on it. I wish we still had a photo.

I'm not a professional interior designer, but I've learned a few things:
It's not the destination, it's the journey. Decor is about who you are now, not last decade.
Benjamin Moore Maspacone white works sooo well. Really!!
    It's all in the mix!
Soft metallics add gleam. Gleam looks clean!! Even homemade art (stick men) made with a gold felt tip marker looks expensive!!
I still hate duran duran green. But dark teal and white work with it (but just about damn near nuthin' else!) 🤓

Ok so you had me at entrance hall. I have been sitting here staring at mine all day trying to figure out how to make this work. Because of course I live in an apartment. And I am trying to figure out how to manage the recycling in between trips to the recycling centre! The entryway is literally the only place it can go. But all I can find are ugly plastic bins, or modern stainless steel bins that, well honestly, just look like one has garbage cans by the front door.
Help, I'm being buried alive in Amazon boxes! Garrett, please help us small space/no outdoor space dwellers manage our recycling more gracefully!

I had to laugh when you asked about difficult rooms. Before I downsized I had a N. facing master bedroom with a large window. I had the most beautiful fabric and I wanted to use a very pale green paint. I would paint in summer and by early fall I hated it! I painted that room five different times! I’m pretty good at picking colors and nothing worked! My husband, in desperation I am sure, said “well it’s northern facing why don’t you try a pale yellow? Yellow goes with your fabric”. Boom! A pale yellow was perfect. The greens just looked too cold, too gray, too bad, (except in the heat of summer!) I was trying to over shout the house, it knew what it wanted and In our often below zero climate my N. facing master wanted a little bit of sunshine and It loved it in winter and summer too!

I have bookcases flanking my fireplace in my family room. I’ve put my vintage books that I have collected or have been given over the years. For example, I have a set of old Shakespeare books, books I was gifted as a child, books my mother was given as a child, books my grandmother owned, etc. I also collect vintage pottery, so I mix that in with the books. I try to keep the color scheme as consistent as I can to keep it from looking too hodge podge. My entrance from my garage, however, needs work 😂. It’s such a cramped space, but it’s where we usually enter, as opposed to the front door, so I would love to style it more attractively.

(I’d love to see this channel with a sponsorship that sends you out to film Le Visiteur or some such where you do housecalls and help ppl with their space, I’d watch the heck outta that)
I’m having a hard time with walls that overlap rooms, like they are shared walls with multiple spaces. What color to paint them, like, do I paint it the color of the room it’s leading into or do I do that wall the color of the hallway? I dunno. Also how to style the outside area of my front door. I live in a larger, nice building and it opens into a large hallway with structures outside my doorway. I’ve never been a wreath person, but 🤷🏼‍♀️
currently all I have out there is a zany cat doormat 🫣

As a designer, when I do bookshelves or etageres, I strip them of everything. Make piles of large books, medium and small books and collect all accessories you believe you want to feature. FIRST, start with larger accessories and arrange them on lower shelves. Medium size accessories go in the middle shelves and groupings of smaller accessories go higher up. Only arrange the accessories first! Stand back and look for balance of color, size, shape and make sure that no shelf is too filled or too colorful compared to other shelves. NOW, start with large books! Those can go on lower shelves and middle shelves and again, balance out the books so that no area or shelf is bare or overloaded. Balance out the large books being upright with those that are laying down. Now, start to fill in spaces with medium size books, again alternating laying down and standing up so that you are not repeating the same look and number of books too often. As you do all of these steps, keep standing back and checking for a balance throughout. Smaller artwork or framed photos can now be tucked in to finish off the look. That is how I do bookshelves and yes, Garrett, I agree that etageres need a lot less of everything: a much lighter hand with simplicity and restraint being key.
Mantlepiece problems usually stem from too many tiny, tiny objects all lined up like soldiers! Or,, a repetitive series of framed photos all about the same size and height are a boring problem. Get a little bolder and change out between symmetrical arrangements one month, and asymmetrical another month. ALWAYS stand back and look and look. Don't be afraid to try one bigger object instead of three smaller ones on one end, and take your time to try out all kinds of combinations until it is striking and pleasing and compliments the room and nearby furniture.

I loved this! I have an open concept condo. I think the builder intended there to be a small dining or breakfast table between the kitchen bar and the living room, but we wanted our living room to feel more spacious so we don't have a table there. That leaves a wide open space in the living room that allows unblocked views out to our balcony, but also leaves this weird grey area in the transition between the kitchen bar and the living room. So yeah, i guess the transition between defined spaces in an open concept would be my request for an awkward space :)

Thank you, Katherine, for your comment. I have the same situation in my home. There is basically only space between my kitchen peninsula & living room for a table for two, so I opted for no table and just ate at the kitchen bar. Now that we’re selling our home, I want the new home owners to have a feeling of at least a cozy dining nook. I ended up putting a drop leaf table there (because that’s all I have right now) and a bench for sitting, so that a person can be sitting facing either the living room or the table. I have a table runner with potted plant on it about 1/3 the length of the small drop leaf table. It’s all I know what to do for the present. I need ideas.

The ceiling is a great way to define that space imo! I love tray or coffered ceilings with wood paneling or something added over the no mans land space. Add a hutch or cabinet on one wall if available and it looks like a hallway between rooms that belongs there.
[Not a designer and maybe that sounds ridiculous].

@@godblessamericamyhomesweet1094 Great ideas! We're not remodeling so working with furniture is our best bet. Not sure I can visualize your suggestion about a hutch creating a hallway but thank you for the input!

Garrett, love your videos but I must admit that sometimes when you show photos I am not sure if the photo is showing "right" or "wrong". Sometimes the rooms look pretty good and then I realize you are showing a what not to do. Could you put a tick on the positive pics and an X on the what not to do? I mean, surely, it can't just be me. Thanks, look forward to everyone one of your videos.

*Great Tips Garrett* . I have used the mirror across from the sink in numerous apartments. My current home did not have a dedicated foyer, from the front door, you land immediately in the living room. I created an entry area with furniture placement. I placed a console table behind the sofa which acts as a space divider. I added a hall tree with bench for coat and shoe storage and a runner. Styling my two very deep bookcases was always a challenge. I changed the depth by adding in a piece of 1x2 with double sided tape. It's temporary, so depending on how I wish to style the shelves, I can always remove them. Doing this brings my books to the outer edge of the shelf and they don't look like they are lost in dark deep cavern.

my only problem with bookshelves - I don't have enough space for all my books (and I am a person that does not give the books away). All decorations would only take space I could use for books...

The funky shaped family room in our new house is the only room that I don’t have a strong decorating idea for. I think it only lends itself well to a couple of furniture arrangements, but what it actually should look like escapes me

Your practicality is always appreciated - love your comment about "turned" books. I'm waiting for this decorating trend to go away because it never made sense to me to have the book's titles pointed into the wall. Also, your comments/suggestions about 3' to 4' halls underlines the need for American homes to honour the concept of negative space. Sometimes a passage is a passage and cramming it with stuff is claustrophobic, excessive and tacky. Hey there, hi - I love your pup-tributes.

Yes, great ideas! I love that you always help me see things in a new light. For example, the fireplace opening as a guide for artwork size.
I have a brick fireplace wall, with a bookcase on one side. I ordered a large walnut live edge mantle. I have been thinking about a large piece of artwork, but I'm rethinking that now. Hmmm... sure wish you could stop by! I'll sketch out some simple layouts now, and see what balances out. I know I may need to go with asymmetrical designs because that is the style of my house.
I also am using your inspiration for my very tight hallway. I'm thinking about murals with lots of lighting.
    Thank you again. Genius!

I walk in the back door. The back door while fully open is the depth of the doorway to the stairs that go downstairs. There is no door on top of the basement stairs. When you walk in the back door, not only do you have a staircase directly in front of you to fall down, you have a door to the half bath immediately to the right, and a door to the kitchen immediately to the left. The width of the space is basically the width of the door frame and the depth of the door. It’s the worse entry way I’ve ever seen, and I’m shocked I haven’t fallen down the stairs yet. I had a contractor come look at ways we could put a door at the top of the stairs, and all he could come up with is an accordion door, and even that was questionable if it would fit.
