I absolutely agree. Garrett deserves a million subs! Also, good point about designers whose main focus is shopping. Those videos can be fun once in a while, but I have to limit them. Otherwise I would constantly want to buy the latest trendy item. I don’t want to buy into the consumerism (pun intended!).
Tip for choosing paint via samples if you're overwhelmed by choices: 1) Think of what color you want (for example, off-white) 2) Look up the top 5-10 paint shades in that color 3) Get the paper swatches for all of them 4) Hold them up around your room and make sure to compare them to your furniture and permanent fixtures 5) Narrow them down to 2-3 top choices 6) Either buy small paint sample pots or larger painted sample sheets (for example, Samplize or Benjamin Moore) 7) Compare them to everything in your home again, at different times of day, and in different lighting 8) Choose!

Yes! Thank you! I work in the paint department at a hardware store, I tell people all the time to tape the color cards that you’re interested in to the wall and observe them throughout the day or a couple of days. Then when you have it narrowed down to a couple, get samples and test them on all four walls and near any windows you might have. They cover about 15 ft.²…if you’re painting anyway, go nuts!! All of your colors are approximately the same value and intensity, they’ll get covered up just fine by whatever paint you buy. It’s better to spend some money on samples and the time to choose wisely than to hate the color you’ve chosen and potentially have to do it again.
Here for the use of scale and asymmetry!!😊 While my OCD (diagnosed, not just self proclaimed) gravitates towards symmetry, I've realized that symmetrical spaces don't look quite right. They're too "matchy", too repetitive. Symmetry isn't the same as having visual balance!! If you have something on the left, like a big table, add something to the right, like an ottoman, sculpture, etc, or multiple objects that give the visual balance to the large object. The same goes with scale, too many small objects looks cluttered, too many large objects make the place look cramped, or tight. You have to have both, so the scale of each has a place to stand out against something else. Oh, and i don't think anyone will ever be as LeChic as Albert!🥰
One of my mistakes - buying every piece of upholstered furniture in velvet. High quality velvet - but still - velvet. In a previous video, you mentioned how we must mix textures, so I bought a light blue leather chair for the living room and it instantly made a huge difference.
Omg, girl, you live your luxurious velvet life!!! Leather and velvet are my two favorite upholstery fabrics, and they look so sumptuous together! I've always wanted to have a home with dark charcoal colored walls with black leather and velvet furniture in jewel tones! 🥰 Too bad my existence is covered in cat hair (and i won't give that up yet😸) so velvet is a distant dream for the moment. 😂 You enjoy yourself on the velvet furniture for me, ok?

I have a dark plum colored velvet sofa, and vintage jewel tone glass table lamps - one cranberry glass, one green glass, and one blue glass. My rug is in distressed/faded jewel tones. My mistake that was on the list is in regards to scale. I purchased a beautiful sideboard to use as an entertainment/ media console. It works great to hide all the kid electronics and cords. It is just a bit too large visually for the space. I'm probably the only person on earth that is bothered by it, but it does drive me nuts. I can't afford to replace it at the moment, so I live with it as a reminder for the next time I purchase furniture.

You’re totally right about picking the paint color last… but we’re totally not doing that. 90% of our current furniture (10+ years of renter chic) doesn’t suit our new place, but we can’t afford to replace it all at once. Nor do we want to. It’ll be years before we have all the new pieces selected. So… we’re painting and wallpapering now. Guess we’ll redo it later if the colors no longer work!
Here’s a great tip…. (I’m also a designer)… get a few foam boards from a dollar store, cut them in half and paint your swatches on those, stick them on the walls, this way you won’t have to paint the wall. Write the color, brand etc. on the back and file them away. Later when you’ve accumulated many of those, you can pull them out and use them for clients homes or for another room in your own house.

I decided my family room should be a nice yellow and picked the color with a swatch. I’m going to preface this by saying I’m a nurse. So, imagine how I felt when I started at, I cutting it in and stood back to look at it and realized with the lighting in the room that my “ lovely” yellow looked just like a urine sample! Needless to say, I picked an entirely different yellow (which I love). I had no idea how tricky yellows were until then!
Ugh..I'm sorry to hear that. I'm glad you found a color you ultimately loved. It's amazing how different a color can look on our walls and ceilings versus the paint swatch. Lightening and texture play such important roles in how a color will appear in a space, or sometimes I see a color on a swatch I love, and then when I test it on walls I don't like it.
You definitely should have more viewers! My biggest mistake was listening to my husband and my mom when choosing artwork that should go above my sofa. The one they chose was too small in the end. How did I fix it you ask? I made my own artwork, it is now obnoxiously huge in scale and I freaking love it! 😁😁
Another thing that I love you talked about is a symmetry I also think that that makes a home or living room space feel very curated and different which I always love to use in my spaces

My biggest design mistake was letting someone else decorate my home without my input. My mother's wedding gift was decorating my living room. We drove to Pierre Deux where she pored over swatches and assessed chairs, sofas, and sconces. In a few hours, I had all the fixings for a perfect French Country hang-out. It just wasn't me. Eventually, I started exploring ways to mix in modern elements. For example, I hung an abstract painting above the sofa and added a minimalist coffee table. I think the eclectic look suits the room nicely.
What you said about the weight and quality of major pieces is so true. Put your money into things that separate you from the ground, whether it be chairs/sofas, beds, shoes or car tires. In the long run, it plays dividends.
Question for your Q&A: When entering overnight guests, how do you make essentials convenient, but still look good. For example: an extra roll of toilet paper, or air freshener in the bathroom? Thanks Garrett.
Marianne, i think you might be overthinking the air freshener. You can't expect everything in your house to be "perfectly aesthetic". Our homes are not always going to be "magazine ready". Perhaps instead of the aerosol cans, opt for a nice looking scent diffuser, an electric one with a timer, or those "poopourri" sprays that you can transfer to aesthetic containers?? As far as the extras like toilet paper and towels, myself and my MIL use aesthetic arrangements and matching storage containers. I use decorative boxes in my home color scheme to store TP and rolled towels in another. My MIL uses wicker or jute baskets in a rolly cart for her extra TP, towels and decorative soaps, bath bombs and salts and a bowl of poupourri. She also "hides" the air freshener behind the basket so it's not obvious. My air freshener lives in the cabinet, easily accessible, but put away.
I have a ceramic decorative bowl that holds a selection of travel size items (a lot of hotel shampoos lol), new tooth brush, tp, small bootle of poopperia, washcloth and a little welcome sign hanging from it. I always tell our guest they r welcome to take anything they want. Once they leave I refill it and put the filled bowl in bag and put in another area. When they come I just put it on the bathroom counter they will be using..super easy and fun.
I really dislike air fresheners as they usually have an artificial scent which gives me a headache. Just leave a pretty box of matches out to light as needed. I ran a piece of ribbon through mine and hung it on the door handle.
My breakfast area chairs are not comfortable. That is the first thing I will look to change when I know where I'm going to move. Thank you for always giving us so much useful content!!! 😘
I was guilty with the bed one. I moved to my apartment and bought an airbed for the meantime. My back really hurts because I have scoliosis. 😫 Then after 1 week of sleeping on it, I bought a good mattress. I didn’t care about the price and invested on it. Now, I have a good night sleep and it’s the best investment for me EVER! Great tips btw, Garrett. 😊

I’ve recently inherited three vintage pieces that originally belonged to my grandparents. I did not want them and dug my heels into the ground thinking I’d find space in my garage for them. HOWEVER I somehow incorporated them into my space and I’m so glad I did. They bring so much character and history to my home. Best decision I’ve made was to accept and not ditch them.

Excellent. A lot of designers repeat things over and over. I was expecting that here too, but you surprised me. There were other things you talked about, like asymmetry.
Your last idea about appreciating the existing features of a room like the windows got me thinking. I never liked my window frames (1980s) as they don’t fit in with the building (late 1930s). But I do really appreciate the changing light at different times of year and how far the sunlight penetrates in winter. I’m going give them a bit more design consideration!
Congrats on closing in on 50k! I’ve totally done the paint color thing for our new house living room & entryway, but in my defense we already owned a great burnt orange couch & I needed a paint color that would work well with our extensive unpainted Craftsman trim/woodwork (the baseboards are almost 12 inches high!). We fell in love with the look of a darker emerald green & then I loved the way gold & brass light fixtures contrasted with the color we chose.

Hey Garret! I really appreciate the time and effort you put in these videos! It really shows! When we bought our sofas.. I had NO idea how to arrange the room and I put the TV in front of the window. Luckily, a family member helped me out to move the tv and now the room looks great. Wonderful content, keep it up!

Interesting problem. I have a spare bedroom that's currently used mostly for storing paints, trim and tools while I redecorate the rest of the house. Not sure what I'll use it for when I'm done. It's small and through the north-facing window you see my garbage bins and a shed. If I don't make a decision, it will probably be used for storage permanently.
One mistake I made was to put an antique mission style rocker in my living room. It wasn't very comfortable and I found guests sitting on the coffee table, the floor or anywhere but the rocker. It looked very pretty and the wood it gorgeous but it was hard. So I switched it out with a recliner from another room and my guests are much more comfortable. Congrats on 50,000 subsribers!
It’s so refreshing to finally hear someone speaking out against the perceived ‘wisdom’ of hanging your artwork at eye level. For starters, in sitting rooms, people are usually sitting, not standing, but presumably they aren’t suggesting you hang all your art just above waist height! I think you’re absolutely right, you have to take the architecture into account. Our house (in the Mediterranean) has very high, sloping ceilings, so we have artwork, mirrors etc. at varying heights - it would look weird otherwise. By the way, I was rather taken aback to hear you suggest that we should include a cemetery in our homes! Took me a minute or so to realise what you were actually saying 😂

My mistake was choosing high glossy wood floors. They are a pain to keep clean and dusted. Its like having a black car you see every smudge and you have to habitually sweep/dust and mop it...never again...I haven't fixed it yet...not sure what wooden floor will be good to put in or if I should just carpet the house....Oh an NEVER put marble in front entry. I saw it in a house and made my husband install it. I can't tell you how many times i have slipped and fallen on a raining day...DONT DO IT...lol

All points are good and they are different from other designers. Well done! My biggest mistake is using the true white paint color and I correct it with off white.
Finally! I can stop questioning why I think my pictures look like they're hung correctly when everyone says it's wrong! Where do designers say to hang a light over the dining table? All of the online advice looks too low to me
I like the light fixture to be centered to the table, and personally also like fixtures to be hung on the higher side with a minimum 6 foot clearance to the floor.

Didn't remember what paint I had bought previously. The store thought they mixed the identical color. Took it home and started to paint.....horrible. Nothing like what I had wanted. Paint changes in tone once it has been painted after a while, too, so getting the exact same color seems nearly impossible.

You are fine! If the paint is somehow not sampled in the space to be painted, there is a good chance it might not look as expected, and then a substantial amount of money could be wasted on paint and labor let alone time for an unexpected or unfavorable result. I sample every paint I'm thinking about for a room, and sometimes it takes me several weeks to get exactly what I'm looking for considering color and how it looks in different light, and on different textures, and surfaces. :)

You’re totally right about picking the paint color last… but we’re totally not doing that.
90% of our current furniture (10+ years of renter chic) doesn’t suit our new place, but we can’t afford to replace it all at once. Nor do we want to. It’ll be years before we have all the new pieces selected. So… we’re painting and wallpapering now. Guess we’ll redo it later if the colors no longer work!
Here’s a great tip…. (I’m also a designer)… get a few foam boards from a dollar store, cut them in half and paint your swatches on those, stick them on the walls, this way you won’t have to paint the wall. Write the color, brand etc. on the back and file them away. Later when you’ve accumulated many of those, you can pull them out and use them for clients homes or for another room in your own house.

I decided my family room should be a nice yellow and picked the color with a swatch. I’m going to preface this by saying I’m a nurse. So, imagine how I felt when I started at, I cutting it in and stood back to look at it and realized with the lighting in the room that my “ lovely” yellow looked just like a urine sample! Needless to say, I picked an entirely different yellow (which I love). I had no idea how tricky yellows were until then!
Ugh..I'm sorry to hear that. I'm glad you found a color you ultimately loved. It's amazing how different a color can look on our walls and ceilings versus the paint swatch. Lightening and texture play such important roles in how a color will appear in a space, or sometimes I see a color on a swatch I love, and then when I test it on walls I don't like it.
You definitely should have more viewers! My biggest mistake was listening to my husband and my mom when choosing artwork that should go above my sofa. The one they chose was too small in the end. How did I fix it you ask? I made my own artwork, it is now obnoxiously huge in scale and I freaking love it! 😁😁
As a young bride, I painted the living room the wrong color yellow - in two diff homes. I never made that mistake again.
Another thing that I love you talked about is a symmetry I also think that that makes a home or living room space feel very curated and different which I always love to use in my spaces

My biggest design mistake was letting someone else decorate my home without my input. My mother's wedding gift was decorating my living room. We drove to Pierre Deux where she pored over swatches and assessed chairs, sofas, and sconces. In a few hours, I had all the fixings for a perfect French Country hang-out. It just wasn't me. Eventually, I started exploring ways to mix in modern elements. For example, I hung an abstract painting above the sofa and added a minimalist coffee table. I think the eclectic look suits the room nicely.
What you said about the weight and quality of major pieces is so true. Put your money into things that separate you from the ground, whether it be chairs/sofas, beds, shoes or car tires. In the long run, it plays dividends.
Question for your Q&A:
When entering overnight guests, how do you make essentials convenient, but still look good.
For example: an extra roll of toilet paper, or air freshener in the bathroom?

Marianne, i think you might be overthinking the air freshener. You can't expect everything in your house to be "perfectly aesthetic". Our homes are not always going to be "magazine ready". Perhaps instead of the aerosol cans, opt for a nice looking scent diffuser, an electric one with a timer, or those "poopourri" sprays that you can transfer to aesthetic containers??
As far as the extras like toilet paper and towels, myself and my MIL use aesthetic arrangements and matching storage containers. I use decorative boxes in my home color scheme to store TP and rolled towels in another. My MIL uses wicker or jute baskets in a rolly cart for her extra TP, towels and decorative soaps, bath bombs and salts and a bowl of poupourri. She also "hides" the air freshener behind the basket so it's not obvious. My air freshener lives in the cabinet, easily accessible, but put away.
I have a ceramic decorative bowl that holds a selection of travel size items (a lot of hotel shampoos lol), new tooth brush, tp, small bootle of poopperia, washcloth and a little welcome sign hanging from it. I always tell our guest they r welcome to take anything they want. Once they leave I refill it and put the filled bowl in bag and put in another area. When they come I just put it on the bathroom counter they will be using..super easy and fun.
I really dislike air fresheners as they usually have an artificial scent which gives me a headache. Just leave a pretty box of matches out to light as needed. I ran a piece of ribbon through mine and hung it on the door handle.
My breakfast area chairs are not comfortable. That is the first thing I will look to change when I know where I'm going to move. Thank you for always giving us so much useful content!!! 😘

I was guilty with the bed one. I moved to my apartment and bought an airbed for the meantime. My back really hurts because I have scoliosis. 😫 Then after 1 week of sleeping on it, I bought a good mattress. I didn’t care about the price and invested on it. Now, I have a good night sleep and it’s the best investment for me EVER! Great tips btw, Garrett. 😊

I’ve recently inherited three vintage pieces that originally belonged to my grandparents. I did not want them and dug my heels into the ground thinking I’d find space in my garage for them. HOWEVER I somehow incorporated them into my space and I’m so glad I did. They bring so much character and history to my home. Best decision I’ve made was to accept and not ditch them.

Your last idea about appreciating the existing features of a room like the windows got me thinking. I never liked my window frames (1980s) as they don’t fit in with the building (late 1930s). But I do really appreciate the changing light at different times of year and how far the sunlight penetrates in winter. I’m going give them a bit more design consideration!
Congrats on closing in on 50k! I’ve totally done the paint color thing for our new house living room & entryway, but in my defense we already owned a great burnt orange couch & I needed a paint color that would work well with our extensive unpainted Craftsman trim/woodwork (the baseboards are almost 12 inches high!). We fell in love with the look of a darker emerald green & then I loved the way gold & brass light fixtures contrasted with the color we chose.

Interesting problem. I have a spare bedroom that's currently used mostly for storing paints, trim and tools while I redecorate the rest of the house. Not sure what I'll use it for when I'm done. It's small and through the north-facing window you see my garbage bins and a shed. If I don't make a decision, it will probably be used for storage permanently.

One mistake I made was to put an antique mission style rocker in my living room. It wasn't very comfortable and I found guests sitting on the coffee table, the floor or anywhere but the rocker. It looked very pretty and the wood it gorgeous but it was hard. So I switched it out with a recliner from another room and my guests are much more comfortable. Congrats on 50,000 subsribers!

It’s so refreshing to finally hear someone speaking out against the perceived ‘wisdom’ of hanging your artwork at eye level. For starters, in sitting rooms, people are usually sitting, not standing, but presumably they aren’t suggesting you hang all your art just above waist height! I think you’re absolutely right, you have to take the architecture into account. Our house (in the Mediterranean) has very high, sloping ceilings, so we have artwork, mirrors etc. at varying heights - it would look weird otherwise.
By the way, I was rather taken aback to hear you suggest that we should include a cemetery in our homes! Took me a minute or so to realise what you were actually saying 😂

My mistake was choosing high glossy wood floors. They are a pain to keep clean and dusted. Its like having a black car you see every smudge and you have to habitually sweep/dust and mop it...never again...I haven't fixed it yet...not sure what wooden floor will be good to put in or if I should just carpet the house....Oh an NEVER put marble in front entry. I saw it in a house and made my husband install it. I can't tell you how many times i have slipped and fallen on a raining day...DONT DO IT...lol

Finally! I can stop questioning why I think my pictures look like they're hung correctly when everyone says it's wrong! Where do designers say to hang a light over the dining table? All of the online advice looks too low to me
I like the light fixture to be centered to the table, and personally also like fixtures to be hung on the higher side with a minimum 6 foot clearance to the floor.

I have no doubt that you will reach your 50k subscribers and more. You go, Garrett! I once took a chip of deep red paint to the store to try to get the same match. Didn't remember what paint I had bought previously. The store thought they mixed the identical color. Took it home and started to paint.....horrible. Nothing like what I had wanted. Paint changes in tone once it has been painted after a while, too, so getting the exact same color seems nearly impossible.

You are fine! If the paint is somehow not sampled in the space to be painted, there is a good chance it might not look as expected, and then a substantial amount of money could be wasted on paint and labor let alone time for an unexpected or unfavorable result. I sample every paint I'm thinking about for a room, and sometimes it takes me several weeks to get exactly what I'm looking for considering color and how it looks in different light, and on different textures, and surfaces. :)
I would hire an agent because you are a star, like you don’t know lol. I am serious! Thank you for thoroughly entertaining content, your professional opinions and pictures to help me really understand what you mean.
