As an artist who's just starting out, I'm so happy you mentioned supporting local small artists! We work very hard to put ourselves out there and make a connection, and that support means so much. To note, however, many of us are using digital mediums to make art that is no less "handmade" than traditional mediums. Buying prints is a great way of getting art on a budget, and still directly helps the artist (you can ask about canvas prints as well if you love that look).
I have a few numbered prints from smaller local artists. My son bought me a lovely one for Mother's Day this year to add to the others scattered about. We purchased a litho at a yard sale for $12.00 and I felt like a road show winner when I researched the artist. I would rather have a bare wall than a mass produced picture.
I have the original blueprints for the house I grew up in. They have my late father's signature on them for his approval of them. There are six and I had them all framed. I love them!
I'm no big fan of contemporary art or paintings. But I found the perfect middle ground between traditional and graphic art: antique prints/ lithographs/ etchings. Most are affordable, there is a handmade and historical aspect to the printing process and the variety of topics is huge (e.g. fauna, flora, architectural and landscape views, maps etc). Unfortunately, the artist is no longer alive but their art is still appreciated - some of my favourite antique pieces ❤
Hello Beautiful Lechic Family! Don't we just love when Garrett invites us into his home by showing us these gorgeous rooms? I know I do!🥰 We love having vintage furnishings next to our more modern sectional. We have my husband's Grandfather clock & a small wooden table that he made himself years ago. I started finding vintage art pieces in my forties that just spoke to me & have curated theses pieces. Also glad you brought up the runner, I love that look! Until next time, hugs xx
Garrett, I love that you encourage supporting artists. Supporting local artists is a great way to get affordable pieces & help your community🖤 Thank you for talking about sustainable pieces such as buying vintage. Thanks for being a designer/RUclipsr that shys away from trends. That educates us by using sustainable materials made by artisans. Your making our little world a better place🌎
I love to mix new furniture with older inherited pieces! Makes your home feel truly personal and unique. I also love to pick fresh wild flowers during spring and summer, and it is totally free! 👍
Very true Cecilia! Thanks for sharing. Please take a moment to support the channel if you haven't already, and join our very valued subscriber family. :)
Thank you Garrett from all of us artists that are struggling to get our art pieces out there. So many people these days think they can't afford an original piece and purchase the basic mass produced knock offs. I know personally how hard it is to get my pieces seen, little own get pieces sold. There is truth to the "starving artist" quote. Although people need to realise unless an art piece is made by the top 1% of artists, it won't be that expensive.
Absolutely! Thanks for sharing Regina. Please take a moment to support the channel if you haven't already, and join our very valued subscriber family. :)
Hi Garrett - I think that having matching drinkware "looks expensive". A few years ago I finally gave all my mis-matched glasses to Goodwill & bought some new ones on sale that can easily be replaced as needed. Loved the video!
Hi Garrett, it would be great if you could do a video for wall moulding diy ideas. I think that would be a great way to make home looking expensive with less cost. I’m planning to put a lot in my new house and would appreciate it very much if you could give your options/comments on different wall moulding designs, mistakes to avoid etc. Thanks!
Yes please! The previous owners of my home didn't believe in moldings. There are some skimpy quarter rounds, but no baseboards at all, let alone crown moldings. Would love to know what size and profile works for different styles and ceiling heights. I also have fake beams in my living room. They're stained dark brown against a white ceiling. I think they may hold up the ceiling, so I'm not sure I can remove them. Painting them white is a no brainer, but I'm wondering if it would look nice if I added molding on either side so they look less rectangular.
I loved that you included local artists. My son is a struggling artist who sells his work online and he does custom work. Yes,there is beautiful and affordable yet unique art available for just about anyone. I recently bought a new home and I have had to put a lot of work into it which is how I found your channel ❤️ I love it 👍 Don't hate me but, I am a fan of semi gloss enamel 😳 I know it's wrong, but it washes like a dynamo and for resale value it holds up well especially in the kitchen. I love that for me ❤️
Absolutely! I'm also glad you are finding the videos helpful. Thank you for watching, and please take a moment if you haven't already to support the channel, and join our very valued subscriber family. :)
FRAMES!! Really think about the frames for your art! You can get them custom-made for an investment, or go to a second-hand shop and look at the artwork section. There will be a lot of cheap prints in gorgeous frames that you can take out.
Thanks for sharing Ceci! Agreed, and great point. Please take a moment if you haven't already to support the channel, and join our very valued subscriber family. :)
Thanks, Garrett, for the excellent video; as I watched it, I was checking my house alone and got some ideas. Speaking of art, on my last trip to Paris, I purchased an old calendar showing pictures of old Paris, so I framed them in a simple black frame, and all 12 look great on my bedroom wall. So, no angel in a fur coat today? Love your babies; they look adorable.
The cheapest thing that absolutely looks expensive is a vintage (or possibly even antique) Chinese carved stacked box, it was actually free - we found it decades ago on the side of the street on trash day. It’s beautiful, with patterned rattan weaving, carved wood and brass handle. I’m still looking for a specialist to tell me more about it, but I love it and it’s definitely a conversation starter.
I really like that idea of the little lights. I have used them in tight spots to give a little more light but really think I may try the under cabinet thingy. A very inexpensive tip that could add a nice practical touch. You have a very attractive living room. Classy!
I think some really nice textured pillows can really elevate a space, even if your couch isn’t that great. I’m lucky to have a daughter who paints. I wish I could share pics on here. Great video and great ideas!!
I have the most absolutely beautiful antique China cabinet with beveled glass and elegantly carved doors. It also has a drawer on the bottom where I keep napkins and placemats. I got it at an auction for $75!!!!!!!!!!
This is so informative! It's interesting about flat paint looking so elegant and sophisticated. About two years I accidentally repainted all of our trim molding a flat bright, white paint (I thought I had chosen eggshell). It looked amazing and I had lots of compliments! We'll be painting our walls soon and I plan on using a flat off-white paint. Thank you for all your great advice! You're my favorite designer on RUclips!
My little tip for great original artwork...shop thrift stores near art colleges. I have found so many beautiful objects, paintings and sculptures. Great video Mr. Chic!
I like keeping my old duvet insert in a woven basket in my living room because it looks like a lovely little cloud sitting in the corner. It's also cozy to cuddle with if I'm watching a movie.
I agree with all these. Finding great art in unexpected places is always fun. I recently found an original oil painting, about a 38” by 32” for $80 at a thrift store! I love it. And Garrett you did inspire me to get a Tarkay print. Love the mood it creates.
Love the tip about flat paint! For my cheap ideas..light timers for all the mood lighting so the room comes alive without turning them on. Plus those fake flame lightbulbs can trick the eye on some lighting.
Always love your advice. I would love more specifics on how you mix real and faux florals. I would love to see linked basket recommendations and linked artist recommendations.
I love supporting local artists. I got an original canvas piece from one of them a few years ago, and now she's an award-winning artist here and abroad. My point is that there are a lot of budding good artists around rather than settling for generic pieces. You'll never know.
Yay! Thank you! I want to wish you a fun and interesting journey at interior design school. It's hard work, but getting the education is so important in my opinion. Welcome to the channel India! It's great to have you as part of our very valued subscriber family. :)
So many good things here, but I want to highlight art! I llove having original art in my home! A museum close to me has local artists come in to sell their art at a special event every Fall. Amazing pieces for amazing prices! Also, thrift stores or estate sales are great places to find art! You just have to be patient and pay attention. PS, ranunculus are my favorite flower! Absolutely love them! Thanks for all these great tips!
Thank you for advising the support of local artists. Watch for art shows listed in the local papers usually held each Spring and Fall. Amazing deals for works that have been lovingly created. I also love baskets and have a collection of unique sizes and shapes. Love this video as much as all your other ones, so informative.
I enjoy your real life opinion on real homes. I live in a apartment and you have given me a lot of ideas that realy work. keep up the good work. I also love your fashion style.
Hi Garrett! I must admit, I watched more than a dozen of your posts before I subscribed. This is my second video that I watched after I subscribed and girl let me tell you; you talking about Rattan , Wicker and all that yes! I bought six chairs of rattan , used four for dining and two for a seating area near our entrance and OMG I’ve got so many compliments. Like you said area rugs have helped carve these areas. Thank you! - Tiffany from Bakersfield
Love the puck light tip! I think we will be doing that in the near future for our own kitchen. My suggestions for inexpensive "upgrades" would be putting in drapes, changing out boob lights to something nicer, adding extra shelves in closets/pantries and adding benches & coat hangers to mudrooms/entryways.
New new new. You are fantastic! I am about to move into a new (much larger) apartment, and I am trying to figure out how to decorate using my existing pieces, especially my crushed velvet deep teal couch. I do not want to give it up. Thank you!
Welcome!! It’s great to have you as a part of our very valued subscriber family. I normally post videos every Thursday at 1pm and Sundays at 10am. Pacific Time. Congratulations on your new apartment. I just wanted to let you know that I have a virtual interior decorating service, and would be glad to look at your space and give you my opinions on how decorate it using your existing pieces. Consultations can be booked at intro.co/garrettlechic
Hello to you Joyce in beautiful Scotland! I'm so glad you are enjoying our content. Please take a moment to support the channel if you haven't already, and join our very valued subscriber family. :)
P.s. I love the support you show for local artists, I'd much rather buy a piece of art/ furniture/ any creative piece from the artist/ craftsperson themselves. It's so lovely to meet creatives at fairs selling their work and be able to share your admiration and appreciation with them to their faces. 👍🥰
Totally agree about the runners. They're great in bathrooms too! I just got one for my redone bathroom and it looks so much more luxurious and beautiful than those little mats made for bathrooms.
As ALWAYS: such great advice!! I love going to estate sales because you can find some great quality inexpensively. Thank you for sharing your wonderful expertise! ❤️
Speaking of incorporating natural elements; a beautiful piece of pottery. Speaking of art, one thing that I love most in the living room is a gold metal owl sculpture sitting on a wooden base, we got at an art show. Small sculptures can be affordable as well.
Hi Garrett, I've watched quite a few of your videos and really like them so I subscribed today. Would you be able to make a video on color combos? I'm renovating my kitchen the cabinets are going to be painted BM Hollingsworth green and my island will be natural walnut. Now I'm stuck figuring out what color(s) I should use in my dining room & living room (open concept) so it would be great if you made a video in regard to combos.
Yay! Thats great. Welcome to the channel Carol. It's great to have you as part of our very valued subscriber family. I'm sure we will make additional content that concerns color again in a future video. I also made a video not to long ago on open concept. :)
You've outdone yourself with this video, Garrett!!! I love all the wonderful tips, and I'm learning to develop my style incorporating the things you've talked about, like color, and texture, and character! My home is more beautiful and more "me" now thanks to you!!! I redid my floors, and I'm crazy for the vintage rugs for character, color and warmth! Would love for you to talk more about finding and incorporating vintage and legacy pieces into more contemporary spaces! Cheers on all of your success, Garrett, and the ever-growing LeChic family!!! 🌻🤗🌻 Colleen
Vintage furniture: I'm redoing my place at the moment. I got a large three door display cabinet which could be Edwardian (it's not much older). It's beautiful, it's in good condition - and it was under £100.
I joined a floral arrangement CSA this year. I love fresh flowers too, and always try to have some in my mom's vintage Ansley vases. My aunt has been a florist for 50 years and usually rearranges my self-done arrangements which include roses from my gardens. I also wanted to let you know my aunt collects jasperware too. I turned her on to your channel and she has figured out You Tube to watch.
Hi 👋 new subscriber here! I love all of your tips! Couldn't agree more about having art in the home. I have 3 paintings hanging in my living room that hung in my grandmother's home every since i can remember. They were painted by her Italian hairdresser! I always get comments and compliments on them and I love that they have a whimsical and personal meaning for me
Thanks so much, and thank you for sharing! Welcome to the channel Christie Jean. It's great to have you as part of our very valued subscriber family. :)
Love this video! I was kind of broke for a long time so I can check the box on most of these, lol. Plus you just gave me a couple of great ideas, thank you! Love this channel, absolutely one of my faves, and definitely my fave design channel. Lots of love to the pups too! ♥️♥️♥️ My thing is to get the plants out of those plastic pots! Or at least hide them inside a nicer cache pot. Plastic plant pots are my wire hangers!Ceramic ones are expensive right now (I've spent years collecting them one or two at a time) but there are so many other options like metal, wicker, terra cotta, wood, even DIY concrete. Any water tight vessel has potential, and you can still put a protective saucer inside the ones that aren't. l.'ve even turned really nice waste baskets into cache pots! Also the stoneware pots in the outdoor section of the garden center are usually a lot cheaper than the indoor ones. 😊 It just brings houseplants up a level to have them in an attractive, non-plastic container, and it can be done so cheaply if you're creative.
I found a really old rattan picnic basket with the wooden handle...what a score it was at an outdoor flea market and it's just so beautiful. I paid 9 dollars for it. It was just dusty, once I cleaned it up and put it on the lower shelf (where a large basket would go) I fell in love with it even more. I receive so many compliments on it. BTW those drink tables are not cheap! lol I love your art choices; you have a lovely home! Love your vids :) Happy Holidays to you and yours.
Hi Garret, I love to wach your videos. I like your attitude, sense of humor, the sweet and funny dog inserts, the professional and sustainably oriented contents. I am just a amateur who is wery interested in interrior design. We are renovating our home and I try to make it so pretty like the proffesionals on TV. Kind regards from Slovenia!🤗🤍
Thanks so much for your lovely comment Ana! I appreciate it very much. Please take a moment if you have not already to support the channel, and become a subscriber. :)
I love picture lights! I bought two oil paintings from a local artist depicting scenes from my area that have much meaning for me, and the picture lights (25$ on Amazon) so beautifully enhance them. Thanks for more practical advice on making our homes lovely, which in turn makes us happy!😃
My pleasure! Thanks for watching Sandra. Please take a moment to support the channel if you haven't already, and join our very valued subscriber family. :)
Garrett 💙 Hat's off to another rad video 😁 My favorite part is supporting local artists. I bought a painting in Venice Beach, Ca. It's quite SOMETHING when you purchase art from THE ARTIST and have the honor to discuss the piece with them like what inspired it etc... 🙏
I rarely comment on videos, this is an exception. I really loved your advice in this one. It is something anyone can implement. I love your passion for all of us to have a beautiful space no matter the size, age or price.
Thanks so much Brenda! Glad you enjoyed the video. I appreciate you sharing very much. Please take a moment to support the channel if you haven't already, and join our very valued subscriber family. :)
Over the years I've collected a few oil paintings. Some are antique, some are vintage, and some are contemporary pieces from the local artists. None of them is a Picasso, but I love every one of them. Is it possible to display them as a grouping? Would be interested to know what is your take on this? Maybe you could do a video on how to display art collection.
Great video….I’m replacing the “jewelry” in my black and white kitchen….from brushed silver to black. My son is getting a new place, can’t wait to help him design from ‘ early college’ to a more elevated appearance….following your advice and suggestions…Ty!
Hi Garrett, I am soooo pleased, I get to tick all the boxes on today’s video, even the wall mouldings which someone suggested you talk about, which you didn’t today, Although you did actually touch on it in a previous video. Infact from that video I picked up a really good suggestion you made and put it to use. Thank you, I adore your videos and your humour !
Garrett, this is a great video and love all of the ideas! Thank you for supporting artists. My daughter graduates in December with a BA in digital art. We have 2 framed pictures that were chosen to be in a school exhibition, and we plan on hanging them in the playroom that we are changing over to a game/movie room. We have art that my husband’s grandfather painted in our traditional dining room. Take care!

Hello Garrett! I am a new subscriber and so happy to join the “LeChic Family!” My name is Roz, and I am watching as much of your content as possible as I am helping my son design his apartment in a wondrous historic home. Do you have any suggestions for working with the slanted walls created by multiples of gabled windows? They are beautiful on the outside…but consume valuable square footage inside. Thank you for your marvelous, fun and thoughtful videos! 💗💗💗
Yay! Thanks so much! Welcome to the channel. It's great to have you as part of our very valued subscriber family. I'd have to see the space before giving opinions, but options would be limited as he is renting. I might be offering virtual individual decorating consultations on a limited schedule later this year. Again, thanks for your support.
Hello 👋 I’m all about the baskets love them as well as the runners. I was able to get a couple of nice ones for my kitchen. I enjoy videos like this. Thank you 😊
I've just discovered your channel and love it (and subscribed). Your advice is so practical as well as being creative. I renovated my home a couple of years ago and had a problem finding side tables suitable for our very small lounge room. Then I found the perfect solution - stools. In a local designer furniture shop I found 2 beautiful solid wood stools in different heights on super special because they were the last in stock. Both are the right height for reading lamps and large enough for a cup of coffee and a book or small ornament as well. Perfect for a small space against a wall next to our sofa and occasional chairs, without looking cheap.
I love the artwork behind you. I rarely see pieces I like as much as that one. It looks 1920's. Thank you for sharing your valuable advice! You are beautifying our world. For colorful, whimsical artwork, you may enjoy seeing the work of Endara from Ecuador.
Such great ideas! Thank you. Always looking to decorate for reasonable prices. Nice to save in some areas so you can splurge on others. I always learn so much from your videos. 😘
‘Hey there hi ‘(I love that Garrett) I’ve been watching you for a while and didn’t realize I hadn’t subscribed to you sorry. I really enjoy your channel. Thank you for all your marvelous posts they are very enjoyable and informative. 🤗🤗🥰🥰
Thanks so much Maree! I’m glad you are enjoying our content and have now become a subscriber. Welcome to the channel! It’s great to have you as part of our very valued subscriber family. 😊😊😊
Hi Gerrit, thank you for the videos. I think you are really inspiring especially the support the small and local business part. I love and adore the ideas. What I plan to do is to invest in some beautiful natural material photo frames that work for my house. Then I let my daughter ( 9-year-old who aims to grow into an artist) draw artwork to fit the frames. It's going to be a long-term project but sounds fun to me.
Hi Garrett, Just recently discovered your channel and of course subscribed and am binge watching all of your videos! Such brilliant advice and information! You are so creative and passionate, you're an absolute pleasure to watch! Thank you for making all of these wonderful videos, I'm watching while painting and it's very inspiring! I'm in the middle of doing a church conversion into my home, it's been extremely hard and stressful work, but I know it will be worth the slog, as I love the uniqueness these old characterful buildings provide. I'm currently doing alot of decorating and I love all things quirky and unusual, old furniture, detail etc. Watching your videos is so inspiring and gives me confidence that my (perhaps) unusual taste in decor is OK, as it's what I love and am passonate about so why the heck not! You start to question yourself and think am I doing things a bit OTT, but then I think no it's my house, I'm not doing it to please guests etc! I love it how you constantly say "do you"! It's very true and inspiring. Thank you for sharing your never ending mountains of knowldge with us all, much appreciated. Big hugs xx🙂🌸
Thanks so much Joanne! I'm so happy you are enjoying the content. Welcome to the channel! It's great to have you as part of our very valued subscriber family. :)
Hi Garrett! New to your channel and it couldn't be better timing, as we just bought a house! I'm super excited to reference your videos as I put everything together. Love your vibe!💕
As usual, great topic! As a designer, I love how lighting at floor level makes a room look ethereal. I'm just now wondering if those remote- controlled puck lights could be stuck on the underside of a couch, buffet, credenza.... ? What do you think?
@@GarrettLeChic thank you. What are your thoughts on bamboo on a wall with high ceilings? Short wall separating kitchen from livingroom. It's the first wall you see entering the house. I want something with texture.
the cheapest way to make home look elevated is to remove clutter - this is Garrett's idea in one of the previous lectures, not mine:)
As an artist who's just starting out, I'm so happy you mentioned supporting local small artists! We work very hard to put ourselves out there and make a connection, and that support means so much.

I always have a couple of bunches of Alstroemerias in the kitchen. Less than $10, last at least a week, and non-toxic to cats! Love your channel.

My sister is quite the shopper and has a barn full of baskets. Baskets can make your place look like Pottery Barn if you get enough of them.

I love supporting local artists. I got an original canvas piece from one of them a few years ago, and now she's an award-winning artist here and abroad. My point is that there are a lot of budding good artists around rather than settling for generic pieces. You'll never know.
Thank you so much for supporting artists!

Glad you enjoyed!
Thank you for advising the support of local artists. Watch for art shows listed in the local papers usually held each Spring and Fall. Amazing deals for works that have been lovingly created. I also love baskets and have a collection of unique sizes and shapes. Love this video as much as all your other ones, so informative.
Thanks so much Beverley! I’m so glad you enjoyed the video. 😁😁😁
I enjoy your real life opinion on real homes. I live in a apartment and you have given me a lot of ideas that realy work. keep up the good work. I also love your fashion style.
Thanks so much Debbie! I'm glad to be of help. :)
That’s awesome! I’m glad you joined our world class family of subscribers who we value very much. Welcome Tiffy!
Woooow some great idea's again Garrett, add it to my 'to do LeChic' list :)
New new new. You are fantastic! I am about to move into a new (much larger) apartment, and I am trying to figure out how to decorate using my existing pieces, especially my crushed velvet deep teal couch. I do not want to give it up. Thank you!

P.s. I love the support you show for local artists, I'd much rather buy a piece of art/ furniture/ any creative piece from the artist/ craftsperson themselves. It's so lovely to meet creatives at fairs selling their work and be able to share your admiration and appreciation with them to their faces. 👍🥰
Absolutely!
Totally agree about the runners. They're great in bathrooms too! I just got one for my redone bathroom and it looks so much more luxurious and beautiful than those little mats made for bathrooms.

I love the basket ideal and flowers that's what I do biweekly is buy flowers but I'm just getting into the basket. Love this .Thanks
Thank you! 😊
🌻🤗🌻 Colleen
Thanks so much Colleen! Your support means so much to us. :)
Wonderful! Thanks so much!

Love this video! I was kind of broke for a long time so I can check the box on most of these, lol. Plus you just gave me a couple of great ideas, thank you! Love this channel, absolutely one of my faves, and definitely my fave design channel. Lots of love to the pups too! ♥️♥️♥️
My thing is to get the plants out of those plastic pots!
Thanks Dodie!🐶🐶🐶

I found a really old rattan picnic basket with the wooden handle...what a score it was at an outdoor flea market and it's just so beautiful. I paid 9 dollars for it. It was just dusty, once I cleaned it up and put it on the lower shelf (where a large basket would go) I fell in love with it even more. I receive so many compliments on it. BTW those drink tables are not cheap! lol I love your art choices; you have a lovely home! Love your vids :) Happy Holidays to you and yours.

Hello Garrett!
