I don’t get the RUclips designer obsession with making a home “look expensive”. I understand that people in our society are overly concerned with appearing to have a lot of money. It’s not the wealthy, but the ordinary working stiffs that keep the Louis Vuitton and BMW folks in business. But wealth and “high-end” items have nothing to do with good design. I’ve been in mansions with expensive decor that looked awful and everyday humble homes that were warm, inviting, and decorated with style, taste, and personality. The “look expensive” thing really irritates me. Interior design is an art. Elitism has nothing to do with it. Unfortunately, in our society, they have become synonymous. I enjoy being surrounded by things that are beautiful, comfortable, and pleasurable to use and look at. I couldn’t care less how expensive they are or appear to be. I care about them being a reflection of my sense of self and an expression of how I see and interpret life and the world. A well-decorated home is evocative and SAYS something. Perhaps the emphasis should be on “tasteful”, “elegant”, “lush”, or even “luxurious” rather than “expensive-looking”. ❤

I agree with what she is saying. I have a very small kitchen and I cannot store things off of countertops or put things like lamps taking up my precious countertop space. All my cabinets have to hold everything …I don’t have room for decor - open shelves. We are going to start a kitchen remodel and I am excited but fundamentally the space is not going to be sooo big that we can do a lot of this

Most dish soaps can be thinned by half (and should be!) Find a bottle you like (mine are breweries with fun labels!) Thin your dish soap into this bottle, and cap it off with a spout designed for olive or other oils. You can usually purchase these for a small cost at grocery stores or Bed Bath & Beyond.

So many great tips! I love her videos. But I would never use baskets in the kitchen area. For me, everything that comes in contact with food has to be washable. Also food moths like paper and natural materials to make it their home. And transparent containers are only great inside cabinets. They may look great outside too, but food should be stored in the dark, especially coffee and tea.
Porzellan, ceramic’s, eco- plastic or dark glass can look beautiful ;)

well, I have two kitchens... one really small and practical, which I use when me and my man are alone and a very big one 324 square feet, when my kids 8 + partners and 17 grandchildren invade us for the summer, and fortunately the terrace is right I front of that big kitchen so we mostly eat outdoors. And for that latter case, I don't give a monkey's butt what it looks like, all I need is functionality. Oh, by the way, kitchens are for cooking, and that's what I really love to do. We live off gritt, so a chique, sleek kitchen would look like a pimple on my nose. I love authentical furniture, vintage and real wood!!

Decluttering and decanting are awesome ideas, but paintings above the range? Or a table lamp taking valuable countertop space with the cords hanging out? Does anyone actually cook in that kitchen? Stick on tiles look cheap in person no matter how well they photograph, the same goes for stick-on under-the-counter light strips.

I could do all of these suggested things but I'd first have to get rid of my wife. I take all the magnets and other stuff off the fridge; she puts it right back. She thinks she has to save world single-handedly, so the drying mat is always occupied with lots of washed cans, bottles, jars and other stuff waiting to go into the recycling bin.

*Clear the Fridge* . I clean homes, nothing aggravates me more than a cluttered fridge. I'm not moving all of that "stuff" and based on some clients, they haven't moved it either in ten years. My coffee maker is the only small appliance on my counter and it sits in a tray, all the others are stashed in a cabinet. While I love Dawn dish soap, it serves me well beautifully decanted in an amber pump bottle.

One thing to keep in mind with jars and containers is that some things are light-sensitive. Things like most spices, oils, protein powders, tea leaves and coffee beans should *not* be stored in transparent containers but in tinted or opaque containers. So it’s best to have both kinds of storage!
The tip with the dish soap is great! I have long had a soap dispenser for my bathroom, but I’ve never actively seen refill bags for dish soap. I’ll look out for it, though, and buy a soap dispenser for the kitchen! Another thing I’m unsure about is how to decorate or hide the little things that are almost always in the open in my kitchen, like honey, maple syrup, tabasco, and small stuff like that. Or maybe I need one of those condiment baskets that I can easily put away after use?

    • @wendylang2360
      @wendylang2360 Год назад +1

Use both & reserve a shelf in a cupboard or pantry to hide them. What I mean is - wash up & place items on rack. Allow them to dry there as long as possible. Place mat alongside & then sit rack on it - then shift dishes, rack & mat to that spot you reserved on shelf out of sight. (By shifting rack on the mat, you don't have small items falling through.) This is also a way to move items out of the way when you have a really big amount & want to keep washing up but the rack is full.
I used to have a little ditty above my sink - "Thank God for the dirty dishes,
They have a story to tell
For some in this world go hungry
But we are blessed to eat so well."
      Happy Housework

I love the look of decanted items, but not the thought... If there's a little bit left, and you put more on top, at some poi t ypu'll have some really old food in the containers. The reasonable thing would be to use up everything in the container before refilling, but that means you need extra space somewhere to keep stuff in the original packaging. Also: expiry dates: how do you know how old things are?

As I am doing this, I am thinking _this is silly, why are we putting pasta in vases and jars_ ?

I keep ugly packaged items in a pantry closet (with a closed door) and the expiration dates clearly marked, and don't like my work surfaces cluttered, do like clear glass jars with labels for spices and coffee station items, agree with limiting small appliances to what you use every day, love under-cabinet lighting, but will never use lamps or floral/ greenery arrangements as kitchen decor. I put most items into Tupperware storage containers. You can find these used-just clean and disinfect before using It “cubes” out your pantry to decrease wasted space (a shipping/freight concept). Sometimes I put similar bagged items together and place in one container (such as bagged croutons, dried cranberries, etc into a “salad toppings” container. It’s much easier to find things, pantry is organized =less waste. Yes, it is more visually appealing, but far more functional. Well worth the time to not have sugar or flour flying every time you reach into an open bag or loose dry noodles spill in your pantry. However, if these items were on a open shelf I would use more decorative containers.

I'm surprised at the amount of negative comments on this channel, some people seem to forget that lots of people are renting and having electricians in or replacing existing cupboards are not an option. These people would love my apartment 🤣 I have 5 doors and a window, all different sizes and moldings, hardly any cupboards, 2 feet of counter space, no room for a dishwasher because the washing machine goes in the kitchen, the dryer goes in the back porch 🤣 But I've always had open glass shelves and framed art on the walls, just make sure it's framed under glass and horrors yes you have to clean it regularly.🤣😂 But it makes me happy.

Looking more expensive is NOT my goal in life. Sheesh! I abhor stylish, expensive stuff like granite countertops. In a few years everyone will be ripping them out for the next stylish thing. Meanwhile, mountains in Brazil will have been leveled and tankers of fuel oil were used to ship the granite here. I like functional, sustainable, good quality, and reasonably neat. I do a lot of decanting into large canisters and Mason jars. I buy spices from Penseys and decant into a line of jam jars with good lids. I label everything with painters tape & a sharpie. I have my Kitchen Aid on my counter next to my canisters. I love my kitchen. I actually cook and bake in it. 😀

Totally agree. Let's think about the planet and be organized and neat without shopping at Target. I also cook and bake a ton and I like my kitchen to be welcoming and user-friendly, not an art gallery.

I agree with much of this especially cleanliness and being uncluttered but cabinets have doors that cover all undecanted goods. How does that make a kitchen look more expensive?
why would anyone clutter up their kitchen work counters with a lamp?
where is the sense in hiding away a useful kitchen appliance but replacing it with a lamp? and stick on tiles and battery powered strip lighting? that does look cheap.
IMO the best look for a kitchen is one that looks as though actual cooking takes place, not just opening a series of cans. It also needs to be efficiently zoned according to function with everything frequently used placed close to hand.

I really like the look of artwork in a kitchen, but the trend toward displaying it above the stove or in a prep area isn't practical. Your artwork will shortly be covered in grease, dust and splashes from foods or from washing your dishes. Artwork is NOT easy to clean. If it happens to be an original, it will be ruined. Better to confine artwork (and lamps) to the eating area instead of the prep area.
Also, those dish drying mats are useless. You cannot easily stack your dishes on them so you run the risk of breaking glass and ceramic pieces because they were precariously stacked and slid onto the floor. The mats get soaked and don't dry, therefore, your dishes don't dry. What's even worse is that many of the mats are treated with "anti-microbial" chemicals which will contaminate your dishes and potentially cause harm to your health when the chemicals get on your dishes and you ingest food that absorbs the chemicals from those dishes.
I don't care if my kitchen looks expensive, I want it to function and I want to avoid health risks.

I love your video. Straight to the point! I’m in the kitchen all day especially with my almost 2 year old daughter so I like creating a cozy & clean ambience. My must haves are the tv screen on my fridge which I can turn on RUclips to play smooth jazz or set a floral wallpaper. I love my google nest to set the timer, give me the time, play music, or tell me the weather when I look outside my kitchen window. I love having my oil diffuser on which not only changes colors, but gives a nice mist. I can’t live without candles, or a good smelling dish detergent. I have a strip light both above & under my cabinets & depending on my mood, I’ll turn it on to a certain color & it makes me happy. I also like seeing my plants every morning I wake up & I give him a tinkle of water. I guess we just need to figure out what makes us feel happy & that will make your kitchen feel high end to you. I haven’t added a picture frame or books or lamps, but I feel they’ll get greasy if they’re in the kitchen.
