Well... I guess I'm going to cheap looking home 🤷♀️. We just bought our first home and already made several offenders. But oh well, they make me happy.
Agree on most of this except kitchenware (kinda). I haaaaaaate plain identikit Ikea (etc) sets. I love handpainted plates, or things with a history. When I go on holiday somewhere with good local crafts, I bring back a plate or a bowl. I have plates gifted to me by friends/family. (The caveat is they know my taste so I don’t have anything I use reluctantly). I have a stack of gorgeous, individual plates and every time I choose one, I’m reminded of the place it came from. Mismatched cutlery is awful though. I bought a beautiful set when I got the keys to my home, and never looked back. I have a few odd plain steel forks & knives and just use these when I’m cooking, not for serving/eating.
I think it may make a difference whether its crafted or mass produced when it comes to mismatched kitchenware. I imagine if most is crafted it may look pretty good and intentional
Matching tableware is great for hosting formal gatherings, but it should be higher quality then. Otherwise I'd much rather have nice mismatched plates than cheap matchy ones!
Love these apart from miss matched plates. That CAN be a good look, not always. Like miss matched chairs round a table, can, not always, look good. Has to be done right.
Painted countertops. My friend did this on ugly tile. By the time she was through it was fabulous. It looked like stone. Take your time to prep. Don't rush and the final result is great!
This is the first video I’ve seen of yours and I absolutely loved it!! Honest but not bitchy, loads of great advice, well edited. Subscribed and looking forward to more content 🥰
I am in my 60’s and I have always had the farmhouse, French country, cottage look going on in my home. BTW mostly decorated with thrift store or diy items.
My cabinets are that '80's style. Quaker Made, very well constructed and very expensive. They were here when I bought the place 25 years ago. I was anxious to replace them but have learned to love them and so glad I didn't rip them out. The house is an 1980 build, designed and built by a contemporary architect for his own family. He knows better than I, so his design can stay.
I actually have a Starry, Starry Night canvas wrapped print in my living room! Ha, maybe if I was selling my house and was trying to stage it to sell, I would replace it. But until then....on my wall it will stay because I love it!
I think if you really appreciate art the setting doesn’t really matter but for all intents and purposes a beautiful book on the masters on a console table would look much better.
I just hang out originals from talented local artists, but I've got a framed poster from the Van Gogh's "Café Terrace at Night" which I bought at the MET, and I just love it. It makes me happy; those blues and yellows, all the sufferings of both Van Gogh brothers, the struggles, the poverty, and yet such an inspiring work of art. I look at it and I think I'll go to that place once this pandemic is all over.... Maybe, if a piece tells a story and speaks about your artistic preferences, it can have a chance -you may remove it momentarily when in-laws are visiting. But you are right about the Mona Lisa. My rule is: if it makes you happy, you can frame your son's school art and proudly show it to anyone who wants to look at it.
@@SuperWoolfolk I loved that piece but now my fave to The Church at Auvers. I've been to Arles where the cafe is ( early in the month of January when it was closed) and to Les Alycamps that he painted. The good thing about being there in January is no crowds. Because it's south/southwest France, I'm sure it's very popular at other times. You definitely need to go. It was kind of a spiritual experience for me where I just connected with the place. In (at?) Les Alycamps, there is a deconsecrated chapel that is hexagonal in shape. Make sure you go that far down and go inside if it's open.
Growing up in the 70s and 80s my family had red shag carpeting in the family room. Wood paneling on the walls. The appliances were harvest yellow. My home is my safe haven. I have what I like, and like what I have. I prefer the lived-in design.
Love this video! I couldn't agree with you more about decor with words. Not just the signs, but the Minted Xmas post cards with a family photo and the word "Blessed" in script. 🤮 Then there's the Rae Dunn OBSESSION to get every mug and cookie jar for every holiday. 😂
I'm renting. I agree that contact paper on the countertop is a big no-no. BUT! Contact paper on cabinet doors is amazing. Blow-dry the edges to smooth it out. Don't buy the marble effect ones. I bought natural white with a wooden effect on it. I also changed the handles. People have no idea that is fake. They always compliment it. I had it for 3 years now and they still look the same.
@@kathleenwalton3311 in every store! Walmart target Amazon Home Depot Lowe’s you name it. Lots of ways to fix up a rental and not damage anything for when you move out. I’ve seen women make some amazing things. And who the heck would put contact paper on their counter? You mean don’t put contact paper in your cub boards and drawers bc it gets greasy & rips the wood from the drawer? I just redid my kitchen. I painted it white and stained my wood drawers black. Took the gross contact paper out.
@@Leokat334 i was forced by an aunt to do this when i moved into my apt! It's been a while and I'm so scared it going to damage the cupboards. If anyone has tips, I'd appreciate it
Thank you so much for your interior design videos! Your tips, knowledge and clearly straight forward explanations are brilliant. You do a wonderful job on keeping information precise, non judgemental and timeless. I look forward to implementing your recommendations in my home and look forward to your upcoming videos.
Your videos are some of my favorites for interior design tips. As a retired designer, I often know most of the tips you give, but your delivery is so delightful that I watch anyway!
So I had those cupboards you showed, and I used the doors and rebuilt them into a shaker style. It took quite a while to finish the whole kitchen, but was a fraction of the cost of any professional solution, and looks so much better.
There are so many places online that represent artists, where you can buy originals or prints - that it's a shame to be selecting art based on the color of your sofa, or a cheap mass produced print from a department store.
I make my own stuff. I love crafting, painting, floral design and painting furniture.this is really just nonsense and more cancel culture bs. Pretty subtle but that’s what she’s doing. Maybe what she likes has been canceled. 🤷🏻♀️
I personally love some of the farmhouse and cottage looks when it's done in a flattering way. But leaving out the signs and adding more warmth instead of the cold gray look.
Thank you for saying it!! All of the things I have been thinking. You hit every single topic and item on my list that I have been sick and tired of seeing and hearing from others.
I love canvas prints because they’re so matte and look very “deep” and rich, even compared to photo prints without glass! The only other option I also like are acrylic prints which have a high contrast and great popping colors but aren’t as deep due to their reflections. Normal photo prints behind glass are perfectly okay but fall pretty flat for me overall. BUT I don’t think there’s a format that works well for every photo! I’d choose canvas for black & white photos and photos with lots of dark areas, acrylic for photos with bright colors, and photo prints for “normal” photos.
You could add a wood frame around the canvas to elevate the look of it. Kelsey from 'the sorry girls' here on RUclips made one recently at the end of her last home-reno episode. It's fairly easy and looks just soooooo much better all you need is a miter box, hand saw, wood glue and some small nails
@@Kath-Erina totally agree with you! I thought about artworks and other subjects. For example, I have a gallery wall of concert photography, and those work much better without frames imo. But family photos and portrait photography in general tend to look better framed. I think it’s because the focus is on a person, so the frame acts as a visual border that keeps the eyes locked in on what’s important. On the other hand, if it’s something like an open landscape, not having a frame allows the viewer to imagine the scene going beyond the canvas.
@@CLMaxey67 I think if it’s meaningful to someone, then it’s fine. I don’t know. I don’t like this judgey shit. I don’t have writing, but I’ve never had a moment in my life to be so celebratory. I understand what you are saying---but these are ONLY applicable in a vacuum. For instance your mismatched kitchen ware closet----Just needs organizing. I'd rather have vintage one of a kind pieces than all matchy matchy melamine from Ikea. Artwork-----again-----context matters. I have a Guernica print that I brought over from Paris----its enormous and fits my cubist living room. This was from the 90s, I have changed it. But not ashamed to go back to it some day.
@@deRose03 well not everyone likes it, it make your house look cheap and you unorganized. Better throw that stuff out before someone sees it. I’d never have mismatched anything in my kitchen. I even got to see it in person. The famous paintings tip was a bridge too far lol! Don’t come for my mass produced art. Lol! Love your channel.
If you shop at thrift stores, you can find original paintings, some of them are really well done and old. They can look really amazing in the right frame or even a frame that has been repainted or gilded for very little money.
Brutal but honest. DIY may fake the look, but never the quality. And it’s the lack or absence of quality that makes a space look cheap. I’ve committed one of the listed sins and thank you for bringing it to my attention.
I love that you have a Schiele in your room! I have two in my bedroom, with other pieces mostly from unknown artists, but aside from a very few number of people, nobody knew who he was. He deserves to be known by a larger number of people, but I don't think it would make sense to see a Schiele in every home.
I don't know his art but in the 90's we used to listen to The Rachel's Music for Egon Schiele. I just looked him up and was surprised to find out he passed away in 2018.
I just started the video but I actually love those old white apartment cabinets lol. I think if they're well maintained they're kinda 90s retro and cute
Personally I think they look worse painted, in a "lipstick on a pig" kind of way. The only personality they have is the wooden grooves and handleless look so I'd rather embrace it than obliterate it.
@@ChiaraFrancioli yeah i can see that. I'd rather embrace them too but maybe colorblocking the top & bottom cabinets in color could be cool. Without handles still ofc! Lol

Watching this as my counter contact paper is out for delivery from Amazon. But it's okay. You may have a problem with it but I know black contact paper will look a lot better than 20 year old laminate countertops that were used as cutting boards in the apartment I'm renting where I obviously can't paint on them. 🙄😒
I agree with all these - but like you said, it's okay to break the rules if you feel strongly about something! I just moved into a new place and am not decorating it - curtains are my problem point so I'll be sure to check out your video on that!
Yes, girl. On the artwork thing...if the piece of art is played out, look for another piece that artist did. If someone likes their work so much, I bet there is another piece they'll love. And you can flex on finding something not the whole world has on their wall. LOVE Monet but......he did more than water lilies.
I love your glasses. And I definitely agree with GregoriusM about the background music. You're talking about preventing your home from looking cheap while playing tacky music. I'm new to your channel so I'll watch a few more to see if this is a theme. . . before I subscribe.😉
My father refuses to get rid of that lighting. The first time he put them in, I told him the house seemed like a hospital. But, he changed all the soft lighting in the entire house to the stupid office lighting; his reason, "these bulbs last 10 years." 🙄 Also, impressionism is my favorite art style, I paint and have those in the house instead of buying mass produced art.
Making your own art is so Alpha, everyone should at least try it. Anything you want, any colours you want, any size you want, and it's not mass-produced 👩🔧🇺🇲🇷🇺
Boomer dads are the worst when it comes to home decor usually. My dad got cool lights for the Christmas tree a while ago. Imagine a Christmas tree with cold almost blueish lightning, wtf! And my boyfriend's dad got that generic Amazon type multiple piece 'artwork' showcased in this video for a focal point in the family living room.

I totally agree with everything you said in this video. Those word signs are every were I can't stand them. Just wandering if you have any ideas for old panelling in a rental that you can't paint. Also what is your take on a nice chalkboard.
I’d love to see alternatives to the overhead boob lights. We have them and hate them. We don’t ever use them as we have lamps and smart bulbs and prefer side and dimmer lighting but I hate looking at them just the same. Do you have a suggestion for an alternative?
I love my "mis-matched" kitchen items. I do collect with a "designers eye" so I have strong color themes that play well with each other and with the color palette in the rest of my home. Everything is a solid color or tone on tone to avoid clashing patterns. Items are arranged in my cabinets so the colors look good together there too. I agree with you about the visual clutter created by a bunch of random stuff that was not chosen with "intent" about the way the pieces work (or don't work) with each other. Laughed when I saw the photo example you used to illustrate your point.
I really appreciate your sense of humor with this feedback! I also like that you said these decorating trends are not for a classy look. This is great advice for someone going for that look - which may not everyone. When you said these signs are for someone going for "cottage-y" or "farm-y", which is what some people are going for. I'm actually going for very warm, comforting and either "cabin-y" or industrial. I'm not going for "classy" - so I was instantly NOT offended (weird, huh?) I would love to see some advice for my style - warmer, deep and rich (darker colors - without using black). My home is simply decorated with things I like - which is all over the place so it winds up looking like no style. Thank you!
Another cabinet option is to just get new cabinet doors, if you want to go for a mid-priced upgrade. You can even install them yourself with a little help from a family member or friend.
Great idea! Mine are cheap, very old white(ish) laminate over pressboard, and chipped around the edges...no way will the LL replace them, but has offered to remove the doors so I will have open shelving...sorta 🙄 (even THAT would be an improvement)
I agree with the cursive writing on things, lol... By the way I immediately saw your print was Egon Shiele's... And what about those influencer gallery walls with just a bunch of the same kind of Desenio prints???
Lol my parents vacation home had the 80s cabinets! They painted them and added modern hardware, the difference was night and day! Really no need to fully replace cabinets, upcyling is the green route! Plus it saves time money and headaches
As someone who just bought curtains and a piece of wall art, I barely breathe: during those sections in anticipation that I had just done something very wrong. But it turns out I’m okay.
Love your videos, cute saying at the end. Secretly I must tell you I like those weird covered frame photo art things because of just that: what are they!!
Re famous paintings: I fell in love with a John Singer Sargent painting, “Lady Agnew of Lochnaw”. I bought a print (18x24”), brought it to a local independent framing shop, chose a frame and matting that compliments the style and colors of the painting, and, instead of glass, had the shop apply a finish to make the print look like canvas. It definitely does not look like a print now.
@@owenwilson6737 thank you. I’m tempted to take my other framed prints (Tiffany’s “Magnolia and Iris”; Klimt’s “The Kiss”) and having the same treatment done.
Agree with nearly everything except the light temperature comment. Personally I prefer daylight temperature lightbulbs in areas I spend most of my time during the day. It keeps me happy and my Seasonal Affective Disorder at bay. Yellow/"warm" lighting bums me out and I deliberately switch out the bulbs in new fixtures for sunlight bulbs.

Harsh truths. But, like a stranger telling you you’ve got a booger, you’d rather know than not.
Or rather know than snot...amiright?? *highfive*
😂😂
Love these apart from miss matched plates. That CAN be a good look, not always. Like miss matched chairs round a table, can, not always, look good. Has to be done right.
I feel the same way and I have different plates for different moods.
Also agree, I have mismatched blue and white china and it looks v. chic, esp when it's used during holidays and get togethers.
If they are well crafted pieces it looks ok, just the mass produced crap looks bad.
Well, some of us like the shabby chic, the farmhouse look and cottage.
THAT'S MY FAVORITE TOO!! I HAVE IT IN ONE OF MY BEDROOMS AND HAVE USED TURQUOISE AND LILAC TO DECORATE!! I LOVE THE WORD ART TOO!! LOL 😂
My problem with prints of famous works is they scream college dorm room.
I am a little guilty of this.
I think if you really appreciate art the setting doesn’t really matter but for all intents and purposes a beautiful book on the masters on a console table would look much better.
LOL
Yes, some of the new products are high quality now.
Ive not seen this kind of contact paper you are talking about. Can you tell me where you got it?
@@kathleenwalton3311 The one I bought is called "D-C-Fix Whitewood Matt Self Adhesive Film 67.5cm x 15m"
If anyone has tips, I'd appreciate it
I loved the oddly specific "a sketchy car rental office in Baltimore"...LOLOLOLOL
Thank you so much for your interior design videos! Your tips, knowledge and clearly straight forward explanations are brilliant. You do a wonderful job on keeping information precise, non judgemental and timeless. I look forward to implementing your recommendations in my home and look forward to your upcoming videos.
Nonjudgmental?
@@Kath-Erina yes, some prints benefit from a frame! But some also don’t, it always depends on the individual artwork.
@@Halbmond you are absolutely correct, but I though more about family Fotos and such, those look so much better with a frame when on canvas
On the other hand, if it’s something like an open landscape, not having a frame allows the viewer to imagine the scene going beyond the canvas.
yes!!! I knew it, I'm not crazy. Those Farmhouse signs looks horrible... and dumb
LOL - I love my crap - but only because I've made most of it - which probably makes it worse!! But, I agree - it's getting so overused!
@@CLMaxey67 I think if it’s meaningful to someone, then it’s fine. I don’t know. I don’t like this judgey shit. I don’t have writing, but I’ve never had a moment in my life to be so celebratory. Now I do. I get why someone would have positive words all around. It feels good to have loving family around.
Right, but fo people really need a script written sign that says *_"Family"_* just because they value their family...? 🤔😆
I intentionally bought mismatched kitchenware that looks unique and interesting.
@@deRose03 well not everyone likes it, it make your house look cheap and you unorganized. Better throw that stuff out before someone sees it. I’d never have mismatched anything in my kitchen. I buy and decorate what I LIKE not what others like. And I like those little signs they’re cute snob. Far better interior designers disagree with you and they don’t put people down. If people didn’t like bathroom mats as a set they wouldn’t sell them and be bought. Get over yourself. 🤬🤮🤮🤑🤑
@@Leokat334 I don't agree with you, do as you please at your own home and follow your own taste, just don't impose it on others. My kitchenware is pretty and each piece differs from everything else which is how I prefer. I am sure that lots of people could find your physical appearance disagreeable in many ways while others will like it. To each their own.
@@Leokat334 "interior designer" is a fancy synonym to "aesthetically blind people trying to fool someone else".
Why matchy-matchy uninteresting each to their own no offense
Your three piece bathroom interior mistake is hilarious, and your look and music supporting this statement! haha, lol.
another one I would add similar to mismatched kitchenware, is mismatched clothe hangers!
Even if your guests won't really see them, matching hangers makes a difference!
I agree with all of these! Thank you for spreading your knowledge and good sense of style.
please tell me this was intentional: 6:19 and you're telling us to avoid purchasing famous artwork such as Van Gogh's Starry Night. AND HERE WE ARE AT 12:29 WITH VAN GOGH'S STARRY NIGHT HANGIN OUT ON THAT WALL

I just found your channel. I agree with you in everything but the Starry Night Van Gogh. It is my favorite painting and it holds a lot of emotion for me from a young age.
Love Egon Schiele - have 2 in my den. Thank you for mentioning the tackiness of the Live, Love, Laugh artwork.
Yes! I was in the comment section to say the same thing!
I love Schiele but I have to disagree, I think he is very well known
I don't know his art but in the 90's we used to listen to The Rachel's Music for Egon Schiele. I just looked him up and was surprised to find out he passed away in 2018.
@@L.Spencer oh I think something's got mixed up, actually He died in 1918 :)
Lol

LOVE your sense of humor, and amazing pacing. Thanks for being so generous with your expertise.
But, he changed all the soft lighting in the entire house to the stupid office lighting; his reason, "these bulbs last 10 years." 🙄
Also, impressionism is my favorite art style, I paint and have those in the house instead of buying mass produced art.
How many years has it been? Are you doing a count-down? 😂
Does he know you can buy soft white LEDs that last that long?
Making your own art is so Alpha, everyone should at least try it. Anything you want, any colours you want, any size you want, and it's not mass-produced 👩🔧🇺🇲🇷🇺
Boomer dads are the worst when it comes to home decor usually. My dad got cool lights for the Christmas tree a while ago. Imagine a Christmas tree with cold almost blueish lightning, wtf! I totally agree with everything you said in this video. Those word signs are every were I can't stand them. Just wandering if you have any ideas for old panelling in a rental that you can't paint. Also what is your take on a nice chalkboard.
Floor-to-ceiling curtains, pair them with removable wallpaper, or use putty and really light photo frames to install a gallery wall.

That color sounds nice. I've seen those sets in some really unattractive colors.
Beth Wade , yessss. It’s a beautiful color and it gives my little bathroom a vintage feel.
I like how these seat covers dampen the sound of the toilet seat slamming down.
I’d love to see alternatives to the overhead boob lights. We have them and hate them. We don’t ever use them as we have lamps and smart bulbs and prefer side and dimmer lighting but I hate looking at them just the same. Do you have a suggestion for an alternative?
Recessed can lights or find a small but pretty fixture that you like. The best alternative is always something you like.
I don’t understand why they get so much hate. They’re easy to change the bulbs and they’re pretty like low profile.
If you never use them, just take them down and cap off the outlet with a fixture plate.

So agree about words on walls. Yuck. I've always hated clothing with words, brands or pictures also.
I always wondered why I couldn’t tolerate cursive writing signage(s) in the home. It doesn’t feel original.
I love your channel.
Agree TOTALLY that having writing on decor cheapens the decor. just my opinion.
"Drink coffee, do stupid stuff faster with more energy!" I have this sign in the kitchen Love it!
Sloth stuff, especially a sign that says "whatever bitches" 👩🔧🇺🇲🇷🇺
Thank you!
I’ll take my mountain stream scene by Roth Woods over that scary ‘art’ you have behind you any day.
You so do that straight hair and enormous glasses so well. Gorgeous, and fun! Also great tips! I couldn't agree more, even though I'm guilty of many.
Another cabinet option is to just get new cabinet doors, if you want to go for a mid-priced upgrade. You can even install them yourself with a little help from a family member or friend.
We have done this and it is an attractive, effective and more affordable option!
My friend got new cabinet doors on facebook marketplace. They look great!
Great idea! Mine are cheap, very old white(ish) laminate over pressboard, and chipped around the edges...no way will the LL replace them, but has offered to remove the doors so I will have open shelving...sorta 🙄 (even THAT would be an improvement)
So helpful! We just moved into our first spacious apartment and were struggling with art placement
I really had to burst out laughing at the toilet rugs and when you wrote "no, thanks" to the photo canvas frame options :D
I agree with the cursive writing on things, lol... By the way I immediately saw your print was Egon Shiele's... And what about those influencer gallery walls with just a bunch of the same kind of Desenio prints???
ITS CALLED SCRIPT and many people love it SNOB!
Do not allow anyone to tell you what should not be in your house. Do as you please.
And it’s one of the best portraits of all time. Well done!
What an awsome idea

Agree with nearly everything except the light temperature comment. Personally I prefer daylight temperature lightbulbs in areas I spend most of my time during the day. It keeps me happy and my Seasonal Affective Disorder at bay. Yellow/"warm" lighting bums me out and I deliberately switch out the bulbs in new fixtures for sunlight bulbs.
