Back in the 90s HGTV used to have a few shows that were all about revamping a person's space with their already owned furniture and possessions. I was a teen and I loved those shows. I was always rearranging my room because of those shows. So much more attainable than the shows that came later. Aggravating that tmeveryone now thinks you have to spend tons of money to refresh their room. Or a target shopping spree.
I don't think most people realize how much your home affects your mental health. It's also important to mention that if you live in a shared home where you can't make big changes, just focus on changing the space(s) you do have control over no matter how small. Great video, Paige!
I think you would like tofugoob (and others') content about redecorating your home with what you have. I mention tofugood bc I liked hearing her thoughts on the process as she did it, even if the style may or may not be your particular home style.
Love you and your vids!! Can you make a video on “prop styling” your own home for hosting/pictures? I always love the little touches you add before showing your friend’s places.
My grandmother passed away in 2020, and I inherited her home. I've been slooooowly decorating. I believe in not rushing decisions because you can waste a lot of money making bad decisions.
Another way to look at it is that the money didn't go to waste if you learned from your mistakes. Improving the place you live in can be a life long process sometimes, so don't stress too much over short term disappointments. You can paint over the bad color you picked, and return/resell furniture. Learn to enjoy the process!
One time I helped a friend move out of her apartment in Minneapolis back in the 90s. She had a small but cute place. Once it was empty, it was a total shithole. I told her WOW, you are an amazing decorator. God, we were both single Moms back then and did a ton of DIY and curb finds, thrifting, all that. It's amazing what you can do when forced to be creative.
Hi Paige! I have the same Rode mic as you, and I promise you can leave it on the table and it will pick up your voice just fine without having to hold it (and it's heavy anyway). Just keep meaning to mention that to you. About Grandma's coffee table. Everyone please remember this: Grandma loved her coffee table, which is why she kept it so long. But she loved you more than she loved her coffee table. And because of that, she wanted you to be as happy with what you have, as she was with what she had. I'm sure she would want you to sell it and get something you love. And you know what? Every time you look at that new coffee table, the one you love, you will STILL think of Grandma, because she made that possible, as a last gift to you. 🧡
I came in the comments to mention this same thing. It’s not a handheld so leaving it on the desk will improve the over all audio quality and cut down on the distortion in the audio and hard “p” sounds.
The “buy-a-large-piece-of-furniture “ or rug, is such good advice. It transforms, but it also inserts a large piece of your taste. All these tips are so useful. Thank you Paige!

I don't hate my place but I'm bored of it, so I'm going to empty the shelves, clean and rearrange! That sounds like it's going to give me that design high without buying anything. It seems kinda obvious but it actually helps to be reminded of it. So, thanks for this video❤❤❤❤❤
I love your suggestion to paint the smallest room because it’s lower risk. It reminds me of when I decided to put encaustic tile on the bathroom floor. It was the perfect place for me to try a pattern somewhere. I’m so happy how it turned out! Thanks for all your tips, Paige!
We were a military family when I was growing up so we moved constantly. If we were in one place for more than a year, we got antsy. And because we moved so often, my parents kinda had to take what was available re housing. My mother was a literal magician with decorating. And for the first month or so, the house was constantly changing as she figured out what was going to work in that particular house. And ya, sometimes you’d come home and entire rooms had been swapped. My father used to say as long he knew where his chair and his bed were, he was happy 😂 All to say, I am an old hand at moving things around the minute I start to feel bored or unhappy with my home. Even if it’s a room I don’t spend much time in, just mixing things up somewhere in the house seems to unlodge stuck energy and there’s usually a cascading effect where the whole house gets tweaked even slightly (or sometimes massively). Sometimes I even go ahead and yank out things that are really depressing me even if I can’t afford to replace them yet. I yanked off the carpet on my stairs and yanked out cabinets in my kitchen a couple of years ago. The kitchen still isn’t “done” and one wall is still pretty rough and the stairs haven’t been finished totally, but I don’t care. I’d rather have something unfinished then stare at something I hate every day. Also, sometimes it gives me more time to come up with even better ideas than my initial ones or sometimes a new product comes out in the meantime that solves a problem for me. And no, I don’t think it’s a negative thing that your space is that important to you. Some of us are very sensitive to our surroundings and if they’re displeasing it nags at our brains all the time. Now, if you were going into massive debt to buy extremely expensive decor, that would be a whole other issue. But you’re not, so it’s not. ❤
I like the "move something you already own to another room" idea. It recently helped me like our bedroom a lot better. A very unique and thoughtful video, Paige. Thank you!
one small thing a week helps you create a home. Just pick one thing and change it. Just like you said. Before you know it, you will have a put together home. It's just setting goals and sticking with it.
interior design video turned therapy spiral 🤣 been there too many times myself! love how this video turns into paige saying that interior design stuff is cool and all, but more importantly be easier on yourself ❤
I think you are on to something Paige about how we love ourselves and how we decorate our homes. Decorating is my happy place. It helps lift any depression that is looming. Thank you for the videos Paige. I get so excited when you post a new one. No pressure!
Growing up my mum would sometimes completely move the furniture around in the rooms, to breathe new life into the space. She'd do this with my bedroom too, and as a kid I always found it so exciting to fall asleep and then wake-up in my 'new' room because the whole energy was totally changed. Your videos have helped me remember the extremely satisfying power in that. I would absolutely love to see more videos of you reviewing/suggesting changes for your subscribers homes, especially with things they already own - I've binged through the others you did and so keen for more 🙏
Acceptance of your space and realizing small, doable changes make a huge impact! Getting a few percent better instead of looking for perfect, good stuff, Paige! So inspiring!
Never don’t talk about lighting. It’s 🔑 ! I love that I just got some free SECRET therapy while thinking about designing with what you have and evolving over time.
Wise words! I recently bought a giant piece of art that took over a whole wall and it changed my space completely. It made it feel more finished, more mine. That renewed sense of love for my space gave me the willpower to tackle some other jobs. Like painting some trim and doors I left with just primer on all through Covid. Also decluttering. All the little steps matter. ❤
To everyone reading this: Just like your space, you are a beautiful work in progress ❤️ little steps over time make a huge difference, and when you look back on your progress, I hope you're as proud of yourself as I am of you 🌻
I switch up my art all the time and it makes a big difference. Plus I love getting new art, which is a great, pretty affordable way to change up your home. Aw, loved seeing The Goo in this video.
Oh my goodness, today I redecorated my shelving unit completely for the first time since I initially put it up, that is for the first time in almost 20 years! It took me almost three hours to complete the job, I inhaled a crapload of dust, but my, was it worth it! And then I sat down to watch your new video and hear this piece of advice , lol! Great minds think alike or what?! Enjoyed today’s existentialist video a lot!
so true! our walls currently, i feel 2 things about. one- they are light beigey white, so I am grateful for them at least being neutral in a renters home. but two-if you look closely they are really not clean and the paint is old, something only new paint would fix but we are not allowed to paint, so now I hyper fixate on all the dirty imperfect walls in the house lol. And even though I maintain a very clean house, it still feels not 100% clean because of the walls, which I cant change. so, I def agree with you there!
@@amandaelynch1 I’m exactly where you’re at! Exact situation.. But I did the math, in order to feel happy and “at home”, instead of spending 1M dollars on buying a house(I live in Canada), I will just invest in my rental house for only $ 1K. You see my point? It matters if we feel clean and happy.. I recently got a carpet cleaner and that felt amazing just to be on clean / smells good carpets. The next step will be painting the trims and dirty doors and walls. I think even it’s flat white it will make a huge difference! My mind will be at ease
@@amandaelynch1 also, you can get a paint chip from your wall behind the outlets, take it to Home Depot and color match. They will give you the paint that is the exact same color of your rental house. Just make sure the finish is the same though( learned that from the hard way)
Love your family home. It’s very classic. Love that striped wallpaper in the hallway. It’s really great. To me, just focusing on one project at a time, and focusing on the areas you hang out in the most really helps you to not be overwhelmed. Also, get creative with what you have, like you said. Keep what’s good. And yes, be realistic. You are so right.
Learning to accept what you can’t change is so true. I am actually a little tired of a lot of interior design RUclips bc they all assume you own the place, can afford to change/renovate, that it is even possible to change. And here are 10 things from CB2 and Article you can buy except I can’t because I live abroad and won’t because I won’t spend $1000 on a chair. And get real wood floors except I can’t because I rent. All peppered with the same advice about art height, rug size, no accent walls or furniture sets that I’ve heard a million times. (Mostly not wrong except for accent walls, some of us renters don’t have a lot of choice and I actually like them). This is more realistic: I can’t renovate my small bathroom with the orange and green accent tile so ok, we’re going retro 70s with it. I want a bigger kitchen but I can’t have one so ok, we’re accepting that it will be a little cluttered. I can’t have real wood floors so ok, we’re getting an amazing rug to distract from the vinyl plank. I can’t have stone counters so ok, we’re calling stainless steel trendy.
Its crazy that you were talking about acceptance in this video and my required reading for class started talking about this (Carl Rogers, “On Becoming a Person”). I get it universe!
How not to hate your home: 1) Don’t follow trends. 2) Figure out what YOU like. Purchase what resonates with your spirit. Does it make you *feel* something? 3) Be practical. Does the item go with the architecture of your home and your existing decor? Will it fit? Is it too big or too small? 3) Look around. A lot. Browse stores, magazines, and the internet. 4) Once you find your personal style. You’ll be happy with your items no matter how old they get and whether or not they’re still “in style”.
Ah, the ol interior design high. I redid a little corner in my eat in kitchen to add a lamp that I love and some art. Its the little moments that really change yhe feeling of a space.
Pick the thing, area or room you hate most and make it the part of your home you love most. Take it project by project until your whole house makes you happy.
Lol…loved the philosophical struggle at end. My friend has a good take on the matter of self-love/acceptance & how it relates to our personal spaces. The thinking is sometimes we do things to pamper our ego (ie, gut reno) vs doing the self-loving things that honor who we are in that moment. I like looking at it that way because it helps with accepting reality (and being happy with it). I haven’t had the funds to focus on the aesthetic stuff coz I had to do some major repairs, but I try to look at is as new foam insulation, water system repairs & new fence are self-loving gestures for safety/health. Once that foundation is there, I can pivot to the beauty stuff. It’s worked out better that way…I’ve found lots of items in my cart that I’m glad I didn’t purchase! Patience is virtue in a new home, for sure.
It is totally normal to not feel fully comfortable with your space at all times. And money and work needed is always a factor. Most people don’t hire decorators. Sometimes, you have to live in a space to let it inspire you. I think the dramatic makeovers we see on tv & RUclips have warped our thinking on decor and how it should be: instant wow factor. It should not be static. I feel the need to change things every 8-10 years. Around year 8, I start thinking I need a change. Then I look at other things, see what gives me inspiration, let my mind brew and create a new vision.
You say you talk about lighting too much but like, it's the biggest game changer. A space could seem so awkward or even oppressive.... warm lighting it's transformed to a livable, cozy, enjoyable space. Love this. Needed this. Moving soon to a live-work space with a lot of open area... won't know until I'm in how to approach that. But this video is a great reminder that it doesn't have to be this huge production all at once. One step at a time til there's absolute love for the space.
Also loving introspective Paige. Environment 1000% plays into self esteem (found your channel through your designing your space to "cure" depression, more like abate but whatever) But yeah, working with your space in a series of manageable changes can be therapeutic in its own right (not a replacement for therapy lol)
same; when my mental health is not ok - i need to work on my space (declutter, clean up and reorganize, move furniture) its definately a way to control the outside in order to affect the inside of my brain ;)
@@vidz953 hA! i appreciate that :) are you like that too?? ever since i was a kid my dad would say - messy room means messy mind - and i used to hate that. but i see NOW at 37 years old how he was right :)
Excellent advice. Thank god for dead grandmas or I’d have very little furniture. I’ve known those periods of discontent, a lot due to finances, but realistically, when I look at new things I don’t find them very appealing. Can’t wait to see you redo someone’s space with what they have!
We rearrange constantly. Also, partners parents are carpenters and help us with quick upgrades like putting fresh carpet in nursery (only cost us $100 at a bargain store) and tbh these are skills most people could quickly learn. But tbh my biggest “upgrade” is just getting rid of stuff. Cleaning out your space makes it feel fresh and new instantly.
I love your channel but this might be my favorite video of yours. Love the accessible tips AND how it all came back to self acceptance (and dead grandmas 😂).
Yes. I live in a studio that is a tiny square with the kitchen island as my headboard. I’ve wrapped that in bamboo, I’ve thrown a borrowed white restaurant tablecloth over it, currently have an Ace Hotel sheet as a side curtain, filters light nicely,. I collect and sell mid century and have gotten up in the middle of the night to switch out an artwork. I’ve been told get rid of my records and books for more space but No! I need to have physical tactile things. Thank you for this video, very relatable m, and good to know I’m not the only one this gets bummed/ obsessed over placement of things and bad layouts etc
watched the majority of this video… when out for wine and came back to watch the remaining 3 minutes of this video. never loved or related to paige more
I'm in the middle of the first "wave" of renovations to my little old craftsman. I painted the living room and dining room before I moved in so it feels good even though it's still unfinished. I love color but the previous owner didn't paint any two adjoining walls the same color. So far I'm finished with my hallway, my bathroom, now I'm working on making my son's room magical, and stewing my ideas for my bedroom next. We're starting small and gaining momentum!
Great video! Can you make video about how to choose window treatments like curtains, roman shades, blinds etc? Im have trouble finding something i like for my large windows in my studio apartment. Thanks!
I think its something to how you feel on the inside is represented on how you show up on the outside. So your surroundings can be a game changer. I love some of the tips about thinking of small spaces first. My realtor told me you are never finished decorating a home so don't rush to an imaginary finish line. No truer words. I do think switching room around and decor feels fresh, also doing small projects or even geting a plant can help a lot. And don't underestimate the effect of color on your mood....
Your childhood home was gorgeous! Now that is what I call goals!! How your parents managed to give that up for the small place they live in now must have been really hard. Regards to topic at hand, Thanks for the tips!
Love this video! Have been bingeing your vids while I pack and plan for a new rental home and I was an immediate superfan. I'm a graphic designer and have had a hard time translating my visual taste (which I like to think is pretty sharp, cool, and curated hehe) into my home. Thank you for this incredible content and for helping me design a space that I love!!! ❤
Loved this one! The advice about switching rooms around, is so true!! I had an idea a couple weeks ago to move my dining table into my living room and a side table & comfy chair from my living to my dining space. Made a huge difference!! Love it so much more and it feels like it was always supposed to be that way.
I've been doing this non-stop for the past month or so!! A neighbor in my apartment building joined the navy and didn't need his furniture anymore or want to haul it all down 2 flights of stairs, so I suddenly inherited 8 bookcases!! I've found other homes for a couple, but all these extra shelves really started a domino effect in my home of moving around ALLL my art and trinkets. I'm also a BIG fan of long wall shelves with layered frames and decor, so they've all been getting a refresh! I find myself going into each room just to look at my stuff haha.
On board with most of this, except the large furniture. For some reason I find it oppressive. lol I want something that feels like I can pick up and go at any time, even if I have no plans of going anywhere for a long time. I guess that must be commitment phobe style interior decorating, haha. I do have some largish pieces, but nothing giant that can't be easily moved by two people. Oh except my enormous treadmill but that is an absolute essential. I got it 2nd hand and it's a commerical one that I paid very little for that works perfectly. My one prized giant possession.
I agree with you on large pieces. I bought a white wall unit with lights and doors with working shutters and it's 108 inches of FAB in my living room. Everyone who sees it talks about how great it looks in the non-huge room it's in.
Wow, thanks for the therapy session. I also live in LA and find myself overwhelmed and intimidated by the idea of decorating a home. We don’t have a single picture frame up, because I’m so scared of “getting it wrong.” Our place was built in 1897 and I’m often worried we’re going to mess it up. But I also want to live in a “beautiful place,” whatever that is. Thanks for giving me the courage to entertain the idea of actually decorating and making minimal realistic changes to our home. This is the year! No more boob lights! And I’ll finally but up a damn frame! Thanks Paige!
Gee thanks Paige. I’m going to paint my ugly laundry room ( do I have to paint behind the washer and dryer ?) Excited about the ceiling being painted. I despise the ceiling light there so maybe I’ll change the light fixture too. If I can decide what color to paint it I will be a happy camper. … I never can make a decision so the color to choose Is a problem. 😓😱feeling overwhelmed……
Hi, I enjoy watching your videos each week. To be brutally honest, we don't always have the same style of decorating. But, I truly appreciate yours. I especially enjoyed this video because I feel that many people feel less than because they can't do a big renovation (or a small one). Daily, we're bombarded with unrealistic images and homes of "others."It's not doable for 90% of people. Making small, systematic changes over time make a huge difference. I think most of us should give ourselves a break. Makes life better. This video was a perfect reminder of that.
I love this! You've always got such realistic fun tips to make a space YOURS but also sometimes kill your darlings (while still making it gorgeous). Lately I've stopped completely to make my flat to please others high expectations. I have 34 sqm. My latest purchase was a tall trash can. Actually kind of pricey. The old one was hidden but tiny, flimsy and no pedal. This one is white , sturdy and so well designed. To me it blends in. I also know people will criticize it since it's an open floorplan and it's visible almost everywhere. But I don't care I love my trashcan! It makes me happy. I live here. They just visit.
LOVED this Paige! If I look back to the first home I purchased at 23 YO, YIKES! But that was in the 70's and we all try and forget those browns and oranges.... Great tips!
Okay, I have a quite nice place but a non-existing wardrobe and am currently broke. I think I will try applying this to clothes! sell a piece, buy a piece. dye something I don't wear, stuff like that
Ha this was significantly less unhinged than the Texas vlog so no worries there 😂 . RIP Grandma. Loved that. Great home advice. I agree people want a total renovation all the time when one or two changes will make a huge difference. I would bloody love you to revamp my place using my stuff so if you ever do a London one let us all know because I'm somewhat a hoarder of art and decorative objects and have trouble editing them down. You could work wonders.
Unhinged Paige Wassel!! I've followed you for awhile and I love your honesty when it comes to interiors-such a down to earth perspective that we all need to hear. This video was one for the books. Looking forward to the next one
When you mention re grouting do you mean change the color of the grout to be different? I have the tile from 20:11 in a huge portion of my house and its really functional but I just want it to feel less 'flesh toned' but I don't want to degrade the material by painting it. I'm wondering if you've every seen someone do a nice colored grout with that kind of tile or maybe wall colors that can transform it? Also I love that you mention linolium. It's a very cool material that is made from linseed and is actually quite sustainable, health and doesn't pollute the environment in its manufacturing or eventual break down. Let's make linoleum cool again!
With spring and summer around the corner, I would love to see your content regarding sunporch/screened porch decorating ideas. After looking for new furniture (yikes- expensive) we realized we should keep our old and add new cushions... but it all seems so boring. Thanks!
Please make a video about what you would do with an apartment that is carpeted!! Other than the kitchen and bathroom my whole place is carpet and I don’t know what to do!!
I recently(2 months ago?) bought a black granite sink by Ruvati and absolutely love it. It has that matte finish and I swear it never looks dirty. I also did a brass grabage disposal ring to tie in the black and brass faucet I did. Just a thought if you wanted something other thab stainless black(does it scratch?) I love that light fixture!! What a great find!
Paige i know you're basically done yelling about big lights/warm lighting but i genuinely think that you've changed the lives of millions through this plight of yours like im so serious you have changed the world for the better

Just like your space, you are a beautiful work in progress ❤️ little steps over time make a huge difference, and when you look back on your progress, I hope you're as proud of yourself as I am of you 🌻
I switch up my art all the time and it makes a big difference.
Enjoyed today’s existentialist video a lot!
for me the formula for not hating your home: move to a house where you can paint the walls or risk your deposit and paint the walls secretly 🤫🤫🤫
so true! our walls currently, i feel 2 things about. one- they are light beigey white, so I am grateful for them at least being neutral in a renters home. but two-if you look closely they are really not clean and the paint is old, something only new paint would fix but we are not allowed to paint, so now I hyper fixate on all the dirty imperfect walls in the house lol.
Just make sure the finish is the same though( learned that from the hard way)
Paint/ wallpaper is actually the hardest decision for me to make, so that hasn't been a condor for me so-far.
@@amandaelynch1There are nice Peel-and-stick wallpapers out there
Halfway through this video, and it’s already the most helpful piece of content you’ve ever made/I’ve seen on this topic!
As someone from Europe... That house is ENORMOUS.
I’ve been against black and brown for so long but here I am loving it in yours and your childhood home. Stunning
"RIP Grandma" LOL.
I am DEAD 😂 but also grandma - LOL (what my grandma thought meant - lots of love)
I’ve been following for over a year and this is your best post yet!!! Well done!!
I love big pieces of furniture.❤️ My older sister always said if you like something buy it, you’ll make it work. She likes big furniture too!
Unhinged but fabulous and you, like your home, are most definitely worth loving, Paige W.
How not to hate your home:
1) Don’t follow trends.
Sometime is enough to just declutter to stop hate your home. :D I am calling myself here...
I had such a crappy day. It was really a crappy day but you totally cheered me up. Thanks
Love the restyling of what you already have. I get the lift feeling every time I do this. Thanks for all the good advice!
Then I look at other things, see what gives me inspiration, let my mind brew and create a new vision.
wow, I love philosophical Paige. Great video!
Environment 1000% plays into self esteem (found your channel through your designing your space to "cure" depression, more like abate but whatever)
But yeah, working with your space in a series of manageable changes can be therapeutic in its own right (not a replacement for therapy lol)
same; when my mental health is not ok - i need to work on my space (declutter, clean up and reorganize, move furniture) its definately a way to control the outside in order to affect the inside of my brain ;)
Underrated comment!
@@vidz953 hA! i appreciate that :) are you like that too?? ever since i was a kid my dad would say - messy room means messy mind - and i used to hate that. but i see NOW at 37 years old how he was right :)
You grew up in giant house, no wonder there wasn't much money left.
This may be THE MOST BRILLIANT and also 100% sensible video on home and self improvement I have ever watched, THANK YOU!!!
“Bloom where you’re planted”!
watched the majority of this video… when out for wine and came back to watch the remaining 3 minutes of this video. never loved or related to paige more
I will definitely be revisiting this video again and again. So many helpful tips and makes me excited for my space 🙌
Well, this one got deep and turned into being about self-identity and self-growth. Enjoying your videos.
Loved this one! The advice about switching rooms around, is so true!! I had an idea a couple weeks ago to move my dining table into my living room and a side table & comfy chair from my living to my dining space. Made a huge difference!! Love it so much more and it feels like it was always supposed to be that way.
Americans will be like "I'm not satisfied with my home" then show you a MANSION lmfao
One of my favorite videos you've ever made. Luuurve it.
This is one of the most practical and helpful interior design videos I’ve seen in a while
Gee thanks Paige.
The holy ghost😂
Great tips!
Wow, maybe accidentally brilliant, but brilliant. My summary: If you're evolving, your interiors will probably follow. Or lead?
My Grandma passed away and I still have her typewriter. R.I.P. Grandna
Came to the channel for the inspiration and great taste, stayed for the unhinged life advise.
I'm here for the comedy as much as the design advice. RIP Grandma
Love this video! I would like to request a video where you talk specifically about how to not hate your literally grey and white rental. 😄
This is exactly what I need right now!! Always the best 🤭
Thank you for this! As someone who really struggles with creativity you gave some solid strategies that are adaptable to anyone's situation. 💕
I relate to the end of this video in a very real way. Thank you for that.
Okay, I have a quite nice place but a non-existing wardrobe and am currently broke. I think I will try applying this to clothes! sell a piece, buy a piece. dye something I don't wear, stuff like that
I agree, you can always make a place cute, you have to get a little creative: ) yes working with what you have is key! ❤
You're AWESOME!
This is really good. I'm in a one year rental and enjoy redecorating my big pieces every once in a while.
Thanks!
Loved this show too. Thank you for all of this effort. So helpful.
Thank you Paige for your wonderful newsletters!
Please make a video about what you would do with an apartment that is carpeted!! Other than the kitchen and bathroom my whole place is carpet and I don’t know what to do!!
Ooo and where to get sofas from?
Whoa! Your house looks like the Home Alone movie house.
Really reassuring hearing all of this! Love all the tips. But giiiiirlllll dont throw away grandmas vintage heirloom tables😂😂😂
I totally loved this. So much valuable information! I’m going to switch out our master bedroom for our guest bedroom. So excited. Thank you Paige!
Can you do a basics of prop styling video? Like how to set your coffee table, night stand, etc? :) :)
love you Paige! I can not wait to move in to my own apartment and do the tricks that you taught me for over a year! so insightful thank you
Paige i know you're basically done yelling about big lights/warm lighting but i genuinely think that you've changed the lives of millions through this plight of yours like im so serious you have changed the world for the better
