    Using vintage is so much better for the planet and the bonus is that there is almost no chance you'll see it in someone else's home.

    I am Gen X, I was also a collector. I finally broke that habit, but it’s hard. I never collected for the money value of it, I collected things I like. But it can be a money drain and it takes up space. I now have it narrowed down to one curio cabinet and one corner shelf.

    Arden is too adorable, so huggable. Collectibles are so fun and interesting as long as they are well curated. Sometimes it’s hard to see your own mistakes and things just look like clutter. Sigh…

      That is so true, I think when it comes to collections the hardest part is making then not just look like clutter!

    I feel old when you talk about collecting. I remember the pet rock, cabbage kids, beanie babies, Pokémon cards. But you also made me think about what I now collect and apparently it’s Buddha statuettes (have one in nearly every room). I’ve always collected music (cds and cassettes), but I recently bought a record player and now I go to thrift stores searching for albums. But my music collections are tastefully organized and in cabinets.

    For non-designers, the 70-20-10 color rule can be very helpful. And, there's nothing wrong with purchasing some opening price point pieces that can later be used elsewhere as budget permits replacement. It is completely possible to create a wonderful space without falling victim to design/retail snobbery and budget overruns.

    Youre so so right on every point here - and for other reasons too. They dont seem to be interetsted in character. They love IKEA, (and other massmarket DIY furniture) and see older furniture that will outlast them, as "not them". But in 8 years, they haveused and disposed of so much of this type of furniture. And you are very bang on - ours esp love their collectibles, and by the time they left home, I really couldnt tell if they were living in the teen bedroom they left behind, or a home. We have a 1940's deco house, we restored the period features - but i have a mix of new and antique/ functional but interesting. SOmeone asked me why my house looked so lovely/beautiful yet there was no real definition of the style, I said I just buy what I love and represents me, and over time it evolves to be a reflection of who you are. I do have friends with instagram houses and re-decorate every few years, I have no interest in the latest look, I dont have the energy to do that every few years.

    Millenial here 👋 "collecting" is a thing. Its just also figuring how to make sure it doesnt turn into a large collection of collections. I have been doing much better over the last couple years of really listening to myself, but also taking advantage of trends if they align with the home i want to have.

    I collect Wedgewood, and I’m fixing to start renovating my dinning room. For starters I am knocking down the 1980’s popcorn ceiling and removing the corresponding wallpaper and moving and upgrading the chandelier to a crystal one. However there is a built in china cabinet and a lot of beautifully stained woodwork. I noticed millennials tend to paint any and all wood, for my fellow millennials DO NOT PURCHASE UNIQUE HOMES AND THEN PAINT EVERY INCH OF WOODWORK. I am leaving the wainscoting but where there is wall paper (1980’s affordable wallpaper) I am doing an off white Roman clay finish coupled with a wall of wedgewood decorative plates on one wall. I apologize for the comment being everywhere, I’m just so excited for the upcoming process.
    Also, millennials expensive “designer” pieces do not equate to high end finishes. Also if you live in the suburbs you do not need to shiplap your home to hell and back and have a sign in your kitchen that says kitchen (I live in Texas and this is so common). And if you have an idea do not jump into DIY’ing without a mood board and a mountain of research.

  • @nkley1
    @nkley1 Месяц назад +7

    Do you have any idea how much stress and anxiety RELIEF you have given your viewers . The importance of finding a selection of quality pieces from different designs that complement each other and make your home unique and cohesive, not just a showroom-style, rushed dictated set, is so much more fun….and yes, organized, clean, decluttered, cozy, and stylish can all be done on a budget. Then you don’t have a dated look in as little as two to three years. I feel like trends are changing as quick as dictated updates on our phones, making people feel pressured to then spend, spend, spend. Love your adorable dog and your channel! ❤

    With respect to collections: someone in Toronto was selling a complete collection of K.L.M. delft blue houses, last year, for CA$3000, which is a fantastic price. I watched the eBay auction, as I'm sure many others did, tempted, but didn't get it, in the end, because I know I don't have the space to display that collection properly, in my little house. Honestly, though, I still regret it, 'cause... damn, it was the COMPLETE set.

    There’s a quote that goes “when a woman says she has nothing to wear, what she’s really saying is there’s nothing in my closet that matches who I am today.” My decor mistake is that I like a home with very different vibes from room to room. Both architectural and color. Stone English cottage kitchens. Pale blue or green minimal bedrooms with soft rugs. Industrial loft office. I know it’s in-cohesive mismatch. But some days I feel classy velvet dark blue, others days pastels and eyelet. Love to hear more on how to deal with loving an extreme variety of design

    • @GarrettLeChic
      @GarrettLeChic  Месяц назад +1

      Loving various design styles is common. I do. I’ve spoken about this in a number of past videos, and especially with respect to creating very curated spaces by mixing design styles. I would not of course be in favor of having different rooms within a house go from one distinct design style to another.

    Whenever you start bringing up, generational differences, people start having fits. But here I go anyway :-) I am old, I am Gen X. My extremely unscientific and unbiased :-) opinion is that the younger generations are more easily influenced by social media. They have a smaller attention span, they get tired of things very quickly. They want change change change. I think they lose track of what their own personal style is, they don’t take a minute to think about what they truly like and don’t like.

      Fellow gen X here .....I also think it is a factor that furniture is cheaper and easy to access ....and lots of lamps, cushions and so on ...so easy to pick up while shopping for other things ...( not to mention the seasonal changing decorations in the US) .... My parents could not afford changing furniture and decor constantly...and when I made my own home it was done gradually , because, well it was expensive ..so lots of second hand stuff to start out with , and plenty of time to figure out what I actually liked .,..

      3 is just a starting point, just use a color in three ways, plus its nice to find a pattern that has all the colors used, like a rug or accent chair!

    Because they’re lazy. They want mommy to do everything for them. Sorry. Not you Garret.

    Great video. I’m in the youngest boomer group but I like to collect things too 🫣. I have a secret- i love British Colonial style. When you said to have an end goal for what you want to achieve I’m afraid to start gathering pieces that are so out of style (and horrendously expensive). I’m torn about what to buy every time I go shopping. Anyway, keep making these videos- love your design education.
