Excellent review, Ryan. And kudos for at least giving the old college try in the back seat. I know it's cramped. But having owned a Mazda RX-8, it's not much worse. (Though the Mazda provided hidden rear doors that improved access.) And for me the BRZ (and GR 86) offers a huge advantage over a Miata and other sports cars with room for only two passengers. Specifically, the back seat provides a spot for my large dog. That means I can share drives with my wife (or daughter) and "Fido." He's very appreciative of that. (Yeah, I know that few consumers consider the accommodations for a 4 footed passenger but at least from their commercials it appears that Subaru understands my family's eccentric ways.) As for the obvious question about of the GR 86 vs the BRZ, I'd give a slight edge to the Subaru. In terms of styling, the BRZ's rear end is less busy and (to my eye) more attractive. And since I put many more miles on mountain roads around Mt. Rainier than on a track (where I prefer 2 wheels to 4), the advantage you cite in terms of stable handling trumps the "toss-ability" of the Toyota. When each vehicle manages to find their way to the PNW, I'll be looking seriously.
@@drivingsports You have my condolences. Fortunately, my dog didn't need a child seat. On the other hand, the rotary engine's almost non-existent torque below 6000 rpm meant its excellent driving characteristics were difficult access on any but a deserted mountain road. It reminded me of driving a 4 wheel version of a 500 cc 4 cylinder Japanese motorcycle. As a daily driver it was a DOG. Then there was the fact that if the engine was shut off before it reached fully operating temperature it was likely to flood. Once that happened the car had to be towed to a garage with a lift to replace the single spark plug. I learned to deal with it and managed to reduce the risk with a larger battery but that meant the engine cover had to be removed. The problem was so widespread that Mazda eventually added a warning light to the dash in the last year of production advising the driver not to kill the engine until it had warmed up. I put up with it for five years for its strengths and unique "character," but I didn't miss its eccentricities or its mid-teen fuel economy when I replaced it with a GTI.

@@Jaredscott89 You're right. I should have bought one of the 99.99999% of automobiles manufactured over the last 100 years that didn't flood simply when the engine was killed before the engine was warmed up. Yup. It was my fault. 😢

Great review, and that TPMS perk is bonus with the 3 sets of wheels/tires I have for my MY14. The differences are really fascinating between the GR86 and BRZ.

That intro never gets old, Ryan. Not sure why anyone would go for an automatic? Sure the safety amenities are great and all(Health issues/injuries notwithstanding of course). Thanks again for another great video, Ryan. The information and Production quality, is what keeps us, your viewers, coming back.
I agree 100% about the preference for a manual. Especially where the automatic is not faster. That said, I will likely be buying a BRZ and will need to decide if it will get a manual and use the BRZ as a second car or an automatic and use the BRZ as my daily drive with my daily stop and go highway/inner city commute. I know people that drive a manual with a city commute. I know a 75+ guy with a WRX STI that has the same commute I have. I just am not one of them.
i used to be a hardcore manual driver. my BRZ has converted me. there are enough controls, and the transmission is responsive enough, that it feels ok as far as control. the automatic actually gets better MPG, and i've got a bad elbow so its real nice to not have to touch the stick at all sometimes. no hate for either preference, but thats why i'm enjoying my auto.
@@IIIDemon Playing off of your name, I assume you are no longer a speed demon? lol And that's fine and dandy, which is why I also mentioned people with health or injuries, notwithstanding. With that being said, glad Subaru put in an automatic instead of a CVT. Which is why(due to health issues) Most of the time I drive my automatic vehicle. If/when the occasion arises and I would like to, or need to drive a manual, I grab the other vehicle in our garage.
Not sure about all the different brands, but our Focus ST automatically switches when it recognizes the other set has been put on. No button or switch needed.
If the GR is more tailhappy wouldn't it mean it's stiffer in the rear and thus faster. Anyone else also notice the difference in the front where the BRZ has a rollbar where the GR has crossbars. Can anyone with knowledge and not being biased amongst the two brands explain these differences, which car is stiffer, lighter and thus slightly better?
Not an expert, but from what I heard, the geometry is exactly the same between the two. My understanding is the 86 is driftier and the BRZ is grippier. Neither is inherently better than the other, and both can be fitted with drifty or grippy wheels. If you care about lap times, they would probably be very similar.
I’m ok with no turbo to keep a well proven formula. But the explanation from the planning manager for not using a turbo is kinda ridiculous. They could have used a single scroll and relocated it instead of having to redesign the whole car.
I am choosing between the BRZ and GR 86 for my first car, I am super split down the middle... does anyone have any advice or definitive opinions on either that could help me in my decision? MUCH LOVE!
Same over here, not sure what those rear suspension differences mean. In the video they state that the GR is tail happy and the BRZ feels less but with more feedback that feels that it can go faster. Wouldn't a stiffer rear mean faster and thus also more tail happy? Someone please help out.
Why didn’t they add a turbo? Not because it would raise the center of gravity, but that it would add cost, because then you would also need to beef up the brakes, drive train etc to pass regs and provide warranty. How do we know this, because people have been adding turbos and super chargers for years and it doesn’t change the CoG. Doing it aftermarket doesn’t have the same requirements cause any problems/damage is on you.
@2:30 how about the current 2.0 liter turbo engine on the WRX?, I'm thinking the size of that engine is smaller than that standard 2.4 fitted in the hood space.
I still own my frs. People make fun of these cars yet I get compliments on mine all the time. My mods make my car equal in power to the new gen. These "slow cars" get a lot of views on RUclips as well
I think I read somewhere that the manual take rate for the BRZ was around 85%. That's awesome! Glad they got a better engine and interior. Exterior looks better too. For the price, this looks like a great little sports car. I am surprised by how poor the gas mileage is though. Ouch!
yo dawg, I heard you like low COG. so we lowered the engine to lower the cowl, the lower the cowl the lower the seat, the lower the seat the lower you sit, the lower you sit the lower the roof. mad low COG dawg
Yo dawg, we heard you like Supra 2L 255bhp and WRX 268bhp so we pretended we can't put a more powerful engine in the BRZ so it wouldn't drag you away from buying those cars.
@@idokwatcher2062 Drive on a road course and you'll realize they don't need more power. They are so well balanced and light and very fast in the corners. You saw this guy hitting about 70mph at cornering. Try that in a 5,000lb 500hp sedan.
@@jayfoghino5392 From factory it should've matched Cayman 2.7L power at least. That would've made it an absolute legendary car, one of the best middle class/blue collar sports cars of all time. 3:00 - considering there are aftermarket turbo kits that work just fine without moving the engine, hood, seats, or roof up, I think this is just one big cop out. Granted, the car is good with it's NA engine, but Subaru definitely have the resources and packaging ability to make it happen without ruining the car.
It would effect weight distibution and effecting the playful handling with a less linear power curve. It also ruins the classic NA feel that many enthusients love and is a dying breed of sports car format. Plus, the cost would put it in the range and power as the supra.... so why would you get a GR86 for $40k+ when you can get a supra, an overall nicer car with nicer interior, nicer sound system, nicer radio/screen/UI more premium looks and feel. The GR86 with a turbo would feel like your getting ripped off for the money. All that R&D just for people to end up buying the supra. Im pretty sure that was the real reason. However, I think that a higher performance model should exist still as a limited option in the form of a 2.7L H4. It could be just a modified version of the current engine. This would keep cost, weight and complexity down while having a hotter version available. Plus, because its an OEM option, it would enable the aftermarket to swap this engine into the 2.4L cars in the future as a CARB legal swap.
I just sold my 2019 BRZ for not much less than I paid for it new despite 2 years and the new model in the press - all because of this crazy used car market. I plan to sit on the cash till I can get the new one without any dealer mark ups etc in what I hope will be a cooler market. So glad the new one doesn't have a turbo! Put a turbo in this car and it would steal sales from the auto only 4 cyl Supra so partner Toyota would nix it. It would also upset partner BMW.

Solved by cracking a window, which shouldn't be a problem if you have the sunroof opened. Hopefully this noise could also be solved by cracking the passenger window.
Previous 2 litre versions responded well to aftermarket supercharged and turbocharged solutions no roof changes or bonnet issues total cop out spin Subaru. turbo or supercharged version with lower compression would be easy with brembos recaros and stronger gearbox and diff ratios. most of the world doesnt need autos or hill holders that is a soft yank owner thing lol
I wonder if the Hill Assist was enabled or disabled for this test car? On my 2020 WRX, the indicator is only perpetually illuminated when Hill Assist is disabled, which I find a little backward.
I hated the hill assist on my STi. I am faster than the hill assist and felt like it would stick when I tried to go. At least make it so you can we can turn it off.
Wonder if anyone has reflashed a BRZ with the GR86 tune. Might swing by my Toyota dealership to see if it's possible. Theoretically, it sounds like reflashing it to a stock tune wouldn't be an issue.
Does the argument that a turbo charger will upset the weight balance really hold water? I’m looking at the Nissan z and it’s 400hp like it’s something we’ve all been waiting for all these years since true affordable sports car were in hiatus but I just don’t like the entire package. If they carried the fa24 over to the new wrx why not this?
Just noticed this video - very good content I must say! But I am giving the squint eye to the Subaru guy's comment about how they mount the turbo underneath the engine so could not use one on the BRZ. He is being a bit disingenuous - the engine + turbo setup for the WRX is like that sure, but HKS (and others) manage to fit a turbo in without raising the engine or altering the bonnet lines. I'm running a 2012 BRZ with an HKS supercharger mounted on top of the motor. Ok a **slight** raise of the COG but the handling is still amazing and the modest (stage 1 kit) performance change totally fixes the 2 L motor power and torque issues. I can't help thinking the real reason for no turbo in the BRZ is a desire to **not** cannibalize WRX sales.
The heavier engine may upset the balance. I do prefer naturally aspirated engines though. Perhaps a few years later they could massage the engine to put out 250 hp.
I'm not rich enough to own 2 cars, so how practical would this be as a daily driver? I know it's not a luxury car, but would the road noise and/or suspension wear you down on a day trip?
I had a brz in Idaho for 2 years...sold because I had a second kid coming not because it was a problem in the snow. Plan to get a new one here shortly now that I can afford a second car.

I had to put baby seats into my RX8.. that was much more difficult that it should have been.
@@stephenhendricks103 I'm with you 100% on all of this. Now when I see "new rotary" from Mazda, I just roll my eyes. Prove to me it's great and maybe I'll listen. Lol.
@@stephenhendricks103 Renesis has a pretty flat torque curve, if its non-existent at 6k it is everywhere...
Whinging about flooded rotaries and needing to take it to a garage simply means you bought the wrong car.
@@Jaredscott89 You're right. I should have bought one of the 99.99999% of automobiles manufactured over the last 100 years that didn't flood simply when the engine was killed before the engine was warmed up. And if the engine was flooded for some reason a stab at the accelerator and waiting a minute or two eliminated the problem instead of requiring that the car be transported to a garage to have its single spark plug replaced. Yup. It was my fault. 😢
Crazy to think this car has one more advertised hp than a 2002 WRX even though it makes less torque. I'm curious if Subaru will once again offer a TS version with the Brembo brakes.
The BRZ has grown on me and I've honestly taken a greater liking to it over the 86. Mostly since I've watched numerous videos of it with all of the accessories you can get from Subaru/STI.

Great review, and that TPMS perk is bonus with the 3 sets of wheels/tires I have for my MY14. The differences are really fascinating between the GR86 and BRZ.
It would have been even more amazing if the car featured an auto relearn sensor setup that didn't even require a switch. Maybe they are saving that for the next refresh in 2032 ;)

Thank for a great video. You actually help me choose between these two. AWD might come in handy if it snows this winter. Ice storm last winter but no snow. Thanks from a P.N.W. gal 👍
I will love my automatic brz dont play with me 🤣 I commute in traffic tho & dont really like manual anyway ✅✅
A DSG is better than any stick and a manual is better than any CVT. But a stick is a soon to be extinct item - like a hand crank starter.
Why can’t they put that TPMS switch in all the cars for those of us that run winter tires on different rims? Great review!!

Love that boxer rumble coming through the audio!
To each his own. I rather my speakers play music and not augmented exhaust sounds
I’m ok with no turbo to keep a well proven formula. But the explanation from the planning manager for not using a turbo is kinda ridiculous. They could have used a single scroll and relocated it instead of having to redesign the whole car.

Same over here, not sure what those rear suspension differences mean. In the video they state that the GR is tail happy and the BRZ feels less but with more feedback that feels that it can go faster. Wouldn't a stiffer rear mean faster and thus also more tail happy? Someone please help out.

Probably will be tough to get then with the coming emission laws : (
Why didn’t they add a turbo? Not because it would raise the center of gravity, but that it would add cost, because then you would also need to beef up the brakes, drive train etc to pass regs and provide warranty. How do we know this, because people have been adding turbos and super chargers for years and it doesn’t change the CoG. Doing it aftermarket doesn’t have the same requirements cause any problems/damage is on you.
@2:30 how about the current 2.0 liter turbo engine on the WRX?, I'm thinking the size of that engine is smaller than that standard 2.4 fitted in the hood space.

I think I read somewhere that the manual take rate for the BRZ was around 85%. That's awesome! Glad they got a better engine and interior. Exterior looks better too. For the price, this looks like a great little sports car. I am surprised by how poor the gas mileage is though. Ouch!
its naturally aspirated sadly so the mileage is expected to be low

2:36: Every word was marketing BS. No turbo b/c of cost and Toyota needs to keep the GR86 differentiated from the base supra.
Great assessment and detailed information. Thank you.

Hows road noise in cabin compared to the wrx?
Unrelated to the video, what type of A/C refrigerant is in the new BRZ? R134A or that new expensive crap R1234YF?
They need to put the 3.6 in the brz. 256hp and that wonderfully smooth six cylinder
The heavier engine may upset the balance. I do prefer naturally aspirated engines though. Perhaps a few years later they could massage the engine to put out 250 hp.
