I would take a $5 buffet like that over any fancy restaurant any day. It’s clean inside and the food is good, now that’s a steal! Plus, you know the food’s definitely good especially when Grandma approves! The cost should be priceless.
I absolutely loved the first restaurant. While I was in Korea for a conference, I stayed in Sokcho for 12 days. The Halmeoni is so sweet and food was amazing. The thing I liked is that they change their menu every day. You sometimes get fish stew, Mapo tofu, Jjigae and all sorts of tasty stews. Loved it.

The second buffet is nice, but the first one looks amazing! For that price, you had a pretty good variety of food and they all looked like they were actually cooked from your own grandma ❤

Jimmy, thanks so much for sharing these affordable places! I only wish i found this sooner. When I went, all the Korean BBQ restaurants i saw were $20 per 150g, which is just crazy.
I think that he must avoid travel to China, if he wants to avoid food poisoning.
thats expensive in my area you can get all you can eat kbbq and hot pot fot $28
There are plenty of all you can eat BBQ places for around $20, typically in areas with large student populations, and 150 g. for ₩8,000 are a dime a dozen, at least in Busan, Korea’s best city.

For that price, I'd go there everyday. Homey, clean, nicely seasoned food for $5 can't be beat. We spend way more than that in america for a horribly unhealthy and low quality food

Jimmy, I'm MORE impressed with the Grandma's buffet serving fresh down-home Korean recipes at $5 than ALL the other expensive buffets I've watched you eat at. •I went to culinary school. Regarding your "well done" meat comment, in a buffet, for safety reasons, red meat HAS to be held at 140*F/60*C MINIMUM. Unfortunately, this continues to cook the meat thus drying it out. 🇺🇸🤝🇰🇷

Thanks for the review--it was solid. Was the granny buffet a "기사님" place? Amazing return on the ₩. As for the Sol buffet, pretty good assortment. I'm sure it gets super busy on the weekends/holidays. Desserts as good as Whole Foods? That's pretty good praise, even post Amazon takeover 😅

The $5 buffet looked amazing! I really want to try it. My husband and I stayed in sokcho for a short vacation in like 2016. We stayed in a pink hotel. It was a lot of fun. I ate a lot of fried chicken but no buffet.

The 60$ buffet looked good but like you said depending on the season or holiday you might expect food to be cold because its not busy. They do look like they have a great selection of food but i would go back to the 5$ buffet it looked and felt more home welcoming

A lot of family owned(mom and pop) places will give you a better deal. So it's worth patronizing them.

I have to ask: do you have all you can eat bufets in smaller towns as well? If yes, then I am even more jelous, than I was before. We only have few such places in Poland and from what I found out, you need to make reservatons for them ad they're pretty expensive. You usually get breakfast bufets at 3-stars (or better) hotels, but they're just that - breakfast items, diners are usually designated dishes served a'la carte. I believe some hotels do bufets for large groups of people (like for a conference) but you can't dine with them when you're not part of the group, even if you pay.
That is exactly why I like dining in hotels abroad - you can try some regional cuisine and international dishes as well, and they often serve bufets for all meals (last time I ate like that while on vacation in Tunesia, and it was awesome).
I also remember I loved going to uni caffeteria when I was staying in US (over a decade ago) as they had all you can eat lunch bufet. For like 13USD they had deli, pizza and garlic bread stall, daily special stall (taco Tueseday included), also some pasta, bbq, 2 or 3 soups, salad section, desserts (mostly various pies and cookies), sometimes even sushi rolls, and also few stations with fruits infused water, soda stand and soft serve stand. The food was always good or very good, and menu changed daily so it was always fresh. I really miss that caffeteria, almost as much as the people I met there :)

When I was in Chuncheon during corona in 2020, I saw the local buffet for only 4000 won. That’s like less than 3 dollars at that time
