I think trying out other role is very important to supplement your main role. The thing he points out about sona not helping cs; Sona is probably a support main that never played adc to understand the concept. I main adc but I would have a smurf in low plat/ gold where I play top/jg. It really helped me understand how to manage waves and predict jungle pathing early on.

As someone who played in seasons 1-4 and just got back into it the amount of small things pros have worked out for minuscule advantages is crazy it used to be just last hitting being the most important
The biggest change from early league to now is probably the ideology about freezing and pushing. In Season 1-3 freezing was the way to go since the enemy was vulnerable to ganks and you could zone them from cs while staying save. Nowdays pushing is the way to go, because it gives you so many options. You can roam, you can reset to get items or you can hide in a bush to make the enemy push out and then freeze the wave for a while. Then you turn the freeze into a slowpush to crash 2-3 waves and use those waves to get objectives or to dive.
7:05 Helping last hit. If Sona was to use her q her she would have got that minion into a health level where the adc could have auto'd it, but her q would have tagged the next closest minion (caster) meaning it would now die to a single tower shot. In general I'd argue it's best to leave the adc to deal with the crashing wave, they know the rythem and doing anything tends to just screw that up for them. At the least don't touch full health minions as doing so is just going to make them miss the farm
You can still use autos as a support. It really helps. As an adc main, it is very difficult in early level crashes to last hit since I haven't much AD. I rarely find a support that knows how to last hit under turret and helps me to do so.
"If you're not winning lane, you can't ever expect to gain LP." I used to. Before season 9, losing lane then winning the game was what I was known for in solo queue.
yeah as a soraka or nami, if my adc is useless, i can just try saving him a lot in laning phase but i can't really win it, so i wait until late game to actually do something and when i choose the correct person to support, we can win pretty easily
also sera apc is weird bc her stats show her losing lane to most other bot adc but winning games against them despite losing lane which kinda makes sense since she’s a team fight mage
3:40 in a situation like this, small tip: you only need 1 auto to get credit for a plate if the minions get it. So with trist you can auto and jump away to recall, losing only a few seconds for 180g
This video answered so many of my questions and pointed stuff out to me that was obvious but I didn't realize it. I feel like this video clicked with me in a way that a lot of the other videos on this channel haven't.
Plus two more things in that first clip, Sona is up against Soraka, which means that any trade she would attempt there would very likely end in Chiquita girl's favor thanks to the way their Q starts differ. Soraka recovers health and slows enemies by landing hers, and Sona is in prime territory to be punished for positioning entirely wrong. On top of that, an inexperienced Sona player would be very likely to miss one of the enemy laners with her Q, having the second bolt go for a minion. In that position, she would steal CS from her ADC and probably die horribly from Caitlyn and Soraka focusing her. That's such a free kill that I don't believe this player has ever gone support before. Edit: High ELO? I am the ultra scrublord level support and I still consider that a free hit. The only sad thing about that trade was the whiffed Soraka Q, she obviously expected Sona to continue and try to greed all the way into AA range. Further Edit: Or not, I guess the enemy Soraka is even worse at playing support than I am...
In raka's defense, she was standing still thinking cait was going to freeze the wave which would've been the best thing to do as it would've allowed them to gain an exp advantage and tighten the gold gap. It also could've set up a potential jg gank that could've guaranteed lane dominance in their favor. I think calling raka useless in that particular instance was wrong...Other than that? Good stuff.
They wouldn’t have been able to freeze in that situation, only slow push to get a big wave. The best thing to do here would be to push, then consider freezing the wave once it bounces back if you are able to zone the enemy laners (if not, a slow push would be perfect since you’ll be able to harass and poke inside a large minion wave keeping you safe). In low elo, this is especially easy since people tend to mindlessly push anyway.
@@sxxxnze Yeah, if the number of minions are equal on both sides, you can't freeze that wave. Since all 12 minions were on Cait & Soraka's side of the map, their reinforcement minions will reach them first and start killing Tristana's ones while hers are still travelling, resulting in Cait having a bigger wave. The only time you can freeze is if the enemy's wave has more minions than yours (you usually keep about 4 enemy minions alive to add to their next wave so they have more damage and it pushes to you permanently). People usually set up a freeze by slow pushing and crashing a wave into the enemy tower right as the next one is coming, meaning the incoming wave will be stuck at the tower fighting your minions for a while, putting them all on their side of the map which will then slow push to you if left alone/damaged equally.
I wish I could make all my random supports watch this video. I was fortunate enough learn a lot of this stuff early from a Skillcapped coach, but there are still way too many people who don't even know the basics of wave management and only play for kills. Kills are good for gold, but don't really get you much XP so getting a kill but having to base with a bad lane state isn't worth the kill if you end up missing like 2 or 3 minion waves.
@@baumundallesandere Depends on what rank you wanna be in. This are "basics" for high elo players. For low elo, it would be "take more kills, more dragons, more cs and also more kills" That's it.
I rarely comment but always watch your videos and I always recommend them to English speakers because it's just that good! I can't afford to spend money on lol to get better but your videos are making me better for free ! I truly suggest to get to skill capped if you can offer it. It's such a huge high-quality content!
I still watch this stuff if there is things that I miss, but honestly try to find a player up to low diamond that would freeze wave as ADC. It's rare, both in EUW, EUNE, LAN and NA, played all those regions and you barely see it happen
05:42 isnt it better to slowpush here? We see the next wave just spawned, so if we hardpush it will at most guarantee a neutral wave state (instead of a slowpush back into us). Also we see Fiddle bot and Noc showed top so we know we are in a 3v2 situation and could potentially dive on a big wave. Even if we don't dive here the tempo we get from crashing two waves and the lane control we gain from having the minion advantage is a lot better than if we were to just crash this wave asap. Not trying to justify soraka gameplay here since to make use of a slowpush she would still have to position more aggressively instead of just sitting back. I am just wondering if a slowpush is smarter here
The problem with bot lane is that it takes two people to coordinate to lane effectively. if the correct choice is to push but your ADC or support are not doing it, then you are not gonna have that wave pushed alone. It drives me absolutely insane when I ping/write to my ADC to freeze when we are ahead and I'm Leona supp, and they perma push all the time to tower accomplishing nothing, except getting us killed by ganks.
6:17 In theses situations, were they have a bigger wave and i am interested in freezing i am always wondering one thing. Can i really freeze? I mean, if i walk up to tank the damage of the minion, the ennemies will take that opportunity to poke me. And because of their wave advantage the chance for me ti win that trade is bad. How can we now when we can/cannot?
You freeze a lane when either your opponent is recalling or when you have a significant advantage in the lane. When they are recalling - they expect the lane to push back to their tower by the time they recall and return to lane with items. If you can hold a freeze during that, a lot of their minions will die while they are gone and they'll have to immediately spend resources to break your freeze. When you are way ahead - If you've ever been behind, you know your team will tell you "just stay safe and farm under tower". Imagine if the wave never got to your tower, so you had to choose between staying safe and farming. Freezing when you are ahead forces your opponent out from under the safety of their tower.
Are your guides able to get challenger elo? im a master player and I dont know if with your anual plan I can get more than masters+ or this is just for diamond players and below
with my very limited knowledge id that you should play a lot and just review your games honestly, most of what they talk about on here, atleast on yt, is heavily skewed towards low elo players. idk about their service though
5:40, do you think they couldve crashed the wave in time if soraka helped pushing? Because i feel like slowpushing might actually be their best bet no? With fiddle pathing down and maybe a yone tp they could slowpush and look for a dive.
I'd argue Soraka not hitting the wave there was reasonable. There was a good opportunity to build a minion numbers advantage by only last hitting. You'll not that a little later she is autoing the wave to help fully get it under tower. Compare the wave sizes at 6:02, 3 minion advantage to Cait and Soraka
Slow pushing is a mistake in that scenario because Sona and Tristana are coming back to lane stronger than Caitlyn and Soraka are. You only slowpush against your laner if you're stronger then them because then you can zone them off the wave, if your laner is stronger than you then they can thin the wave without contest and all you're doing is spoon feeding them money and xp. In a worst case scenario, if your laner is much stronger than you then they can thin the wave to the point that it freezes on their side and threaten you off so you can't crash, so not only did you spoon feed them xp, you also starved yourself.
I don't exactly agree with the starting point, for this particular game example. While yes positioning 2v1 is bad and there wasn't much point to what sona was doing, caitlyn and soraka did try to contest it a little, even if slightly late. Fact is they don't have great tools to pressure sona outside of autos, and as most of your guides say you need the push advantage in almost all match ups botlane if you can get it. I feel like their first mistake was not securing the push, as even with a sona tristanas level 2 is so strong that as long as sona helps secure it they can get easy kills or at least big chunks and free recalls. Which leads to the second point, while they didn't pressure as hard as they should have and didn't seem to know they'd hit 2 first, they still got kills off of hitting 2 first, and by the time caitlyn equalised it she gave up her positioning too hard to win or go even, so while the theory behind the first two points is correct it didn't really apply this game. I also dislike the framing of who is ahead, as trist and sona are ahead. They need to recall true, but cait can't buy anything and so isn't really ahead even if she teleported to Lane, she'd be down xp still. I feel like the main mistake here that wasn't talked about was the "bad trade" they took that led to a successful gank with two kills for cait. The mistake here is clear, tristana felt pressured by sona to go far too far up and waste her w while not landing on a champion, meaning her e didn't get fully charged and she didn't get a reset, and then both of them were far too far up. This is actually common for supports that get leads, if you do the right thing after getting kills, pushing the wave in and basing, you can freeze afterwards and if the enemy walks up especially on trist you just kill them. A lot of supports pressure too hard in this scenario, forcing plays with max range skillshots against enemies who can't last hit cause they're out of range due to the freeze. The lane losing mistakes here are not recalling on the crash when you can't get a plate pre 5 minutes anyway, and overforcing your lead when you can have a secure freeze and threaten if they actually get in range to try to break it. The gank here gave cait 2 kills, but even without the gank the play wouldnt chunk them hard enough, they'd likely trade even, and trist would lose her freeze and Cs in the process to the tower. For a minor improvement to the lane before they get the level 2 kill, sona should help secure the push from the allied ranged minions guaranteeing the level 2 spike and cheater recall at minimum, then she just has to stay next to tristana and be ready to trade all lane if the enemy lanes step up.
The positioning was literally griefing and you're wrong about them not having tools to pressure. Sona walks aimlessly straight into Cait, who has the longest base auto attack range at 650, whereas Trist's range is only 525 at level 1. At the freeze frame Sona is probably around 450 range away from Trist, who started E rather than holding on to her level up and thus literally can not use a single attack or ability on the enemy botlane to help. Both Cait and Soraka start should have started Q. Cait's Q is 1300 range and Soraka's Q is 800 range that is a 30% slow for 1.5s on hit, plus 20 bonus move speed. There are only 3 enemy minions up when Sona decides to walk up, so Cait and Soraka can literally run through the minion wave and chase her all the way to tower. Here's how the lvl 1 with that positioning could have gone: Sona walks up, Soraka places a Q behind her so she either has to get slowed or walk back into Cait and Soraka. Cait and Soraka proceed to run her down with autos, forcing her to flash. Trist will likely panic and do nothing, not that she can do anything in this scenario, or blow heal. Alternatively Trist decides to hold heal and walk up to try and attack Cait, at which point Cait flashes then Q's Sona for first blood under tower before Cait and Soraka team up on Trist which will force her sums. People vastly overestimate how safe they are at lvl 1. Sona has 450 health, each Cait auto will do 57 damage and each Soraka auto will do 38 at level 1. Caitlyn Q does 112 and Soraka Q does 72 damage at lvl 1. So in a sequence where Soraka lands Q, Cait and Soraka land 3 autos each, then Cait ends the sequence with a Q of her own that's 439 of Sona's 450hp gone. And if Sona happens to attack back and grab minion auto during the exchange, she'll eat a non-trivial amount of damage from the caster minions.
@@Kirivon maybe I haven't seen it played optimally and it works out that way, but it does seem like you're still ignoring sona and tristanas abilities. Trist e does insane damage levels 1 and 2, and is easily procced if the enemy is running at you. Equally sona can just take e and not worry about being run down, and also in your scenario you can just flash first. She can also take w and reduce damage taken, plus any of her passives. Soraka q travels super slow at long range, in order to hit it and be close enough to chase down enough autos you really have to grief your positioning, from memory it wasn't that bad in this particular example. I'm not assuming anyone is safe at level 1, but the wave does matter a lot more than just your positioning at this point. If you're assuming one side will play bad enough for you to get away with it then sure, I bet you can climb a decent way like that. But that said you'll hit a wall because the wave is the important thing here, and neither side controlled it properly.
@@deathtoexistance obviously it's not a kill if Sona plays correctly. But the positioning error goes deeper than the simple misplacement. Sona positions like that because she thinks it's okay, which mens she doesn't perceive the danger in the position. This almost guarantees she will misplay anything that follows from that point and that she won't realize she's in danger until it's too late. If we assume both sides are competent then Sona just loses half her hp with no counterplay or trade back. Also, Cait/Soraka being poke/sustain champs can afford to take aggressive or losing trades because Soraka will out sustain Sona and chunking Trist down to low HP removes her only win con which is all-in. Once Sona is low they will no longer be able to contest the wave and Cait will just perma shove waves into tower with her great wave clear and harass Trist. At that point Trist will just bleed CS because it's difficult for her to last hit under turret and she has no way of dealing with Caitlyn harass once she and Sona are chunked. HP is one of your biggest resources in lane and if you give it away for free through positioning errors, then you concede any wave control. You also can't control the wave when you're dead. Ultimately things like wave control are refinements, but at a certain point the game simply boils down to: can you kill your opponent. The biggest thing that separates tiers/divisions is people's understanding of champ's damage/limits and their positioning/rotations. Whenever I get matched against a smurf/booster things generally seem normal during early laning phase. Farm is fairly even, nothing seems too special with they're playing or how the wave is managed. Then suddenly they kill you or your support in a really close fight so you chock it down to luck and don't think too much of it only to go back to lane and die again in a much less close fight. Then they're all over the map, always showing up the moment a fight breaks out to turn it for their team, making picks in your jg, and ganking out of position lanes. And before you know it they're sitting on 20 kills and 10cs/m as they effortlessly rotate around the rift farming everything and everyone in their path on cooldown.
@@Kirivon I agree with all your points, and it's likely you are correct about the matchup. I do think even if the sona loses half her hp trist has the potential to 2v1 if she spikes 2 before cait and soraka till, just because her level 2 all in is insane and I have played her enough to know that. That said if she doesn't get a kill or two that way before level 4 I think you're 100% correct that trist will bleed cs and be behind all game, and the only comeback would be through effective splitting as trist is great at that. Have a nice day and thank you for your matchup knowledge :)
People saying that skill capped are to Harsh. All I can say is Dimond players make the same mistakes and its infuriating when someone doesn't play properly. Masters is slightly better but some people are autopiloting and therefore playing like goldplayers.
For someone who was hard stuck in gold for 3 years, I'm proud to say this channel got me to plat 1, almost diamond... but I fell all the way down to plat 4, and believe me when I say I went on a 20 game losing spree because of my team literally being 0-10 before 10 minutes.. if this ever happens to you uninstall the game and reinstall.. it kinda fixed the issue of me getting cursed with doodoo silver players in plat
I am main Support I was watching now tons of videos about how to be a better support after I startet playing ranked again.. I went to silver now, and all of these tips are not working, because my adc knows nothing about that all.. that’s so.. disappointing.. and, if there is someone that knows what to do do, I am so „unfocused“ of what to do, cause most of the time, the most players are playing wrong from the beginning makes me always in a baaaaad 1vs2 position where we 100% would win the fight/lane.. ☹️
Then you spend all this time to gather this knowledge. So you recall after your kill but your support stay anyway and take a plate for itself, die and then you are stuck 1v2 in lane.
For the things where youre saying "its probably clear to everyone... ... Is the vest thing to do rn" could you maybe make a video on things like that? I watched all of this and liked it but the thing all these people making guides like this don't realize that our teammates are potatoes, and that it doesn't matter
this kind of stuff is like the armchair sweatlords guide to the game. quarterbacking the plays after the fact when nobody is out there strategizing that hard in the moment. i counted off about 4-5 seconds between the level 1-2 changeover between the blue vs red teams. thats expecting them to dodge the incoming aoe and destroy both people in 5 seconds on a planned engagement on the fly. and thats assuming they knew they had 5 seconds to begin with. hindsight quarterbacking like that isnt a genuine reflection of what happens in game. is anyone out there mentally calculating how many minions people have been in range to get xp from died to actually make an educated guess on when the opponent is going to level? i never want to meet said individual.
For level 2, yeah its super easy to know how many minions it takes. first wave + melee of second wave for botlane, first wave +1 melee for solo lanes. It gets a little harder later into the game when zoning and backs mess with how much exp you might have at any given moment, but early levels should absolutely plan out when level 2 is gonna happen and what youre gonna do about it. The level 2 power spike is the most consistent thing to plan around, it happens at almost the same time almost every game
Low elo adcs piss and moan if you hi t their minions. Most actively discourage "help" farming. It isn't Soraka being incompetent, it is the general adc incompetence at low elo
I do all this as main support and I can tell you, this is bs video for supports IN LOW ELO. Why? bcs the ADC will not play for level-2 spike, ADC will stay to get plates, and will rage quit bcs you are hitting his minions (he doesn't know which ones the turret will hit first, will loose cs and blame you). Save the very valuable advices for when you reach plat or dia.

Even when I am duo bot with a premade and we are talking over the microphone and tell them to help me push the wave because I want to recall, they do not throw any abilities on the wave, sometimes not even autos. When I say help me push, I mean "I WANT THE WAVE OUT OF MY FACE ASAP" but unless you say it 2-3 times they do not understand it because they have never bothered themselves with wave management. They think it as adc's duty to do it. This is why you should play all roles. If support mains played also as adcs they would understand their own role better.
@@creaketh but why it wouldn't freeze? 6vs6 minions : 0
@@creaketh ty : )
I wish I could make all my random supports watch this video. I was fortunate enough learn a lot of this stuff early from a Skillcapped coach, but there are still way too many people who don't even know the basics of wave management and only play for kills. Kills are good for gold, but don't really get you much XP so getting a kill but having to base with a bad lane state isn't worth the kill if you end up missing like 2 or 3 minion waves.
I am aware of all SC lessons and I say the same about my random ADC's, pity we didn't met on the rift.
If 98% of the playerbase don't know the basics, can you still call them basics?
@@baumundallesandere Depends on what rank you wanna be in. This are "basics" for high elo players. For low elo, it would be "take more kills, more dragons, more cs and also more kills" That's it.
I'm a support main and my secondary role is adc so I understand the player that is in lane with me.
Yeah, if you provide pressure, they'll push like hell, and won't let the wave bounce bakc. Very annoying, even in mid/"high" diamond.
I am just wondering if a slowpush is smarter here
07:14 in low elo your adc won't understand and accept your help, and goes int,afk after he misses a few last hits on minions which was hit by you.
"STOP ATTACKING THE MINIONS!" lol
League is like chess, but far more complicated and complex, but one think didn't changed at all, you need to think ahead your opponent
Facts, I am hunting for an ADC team mate. My friend plays jungler and I despise random adcs xD
Still waiting for that voice chat!
Use pings extensively to communicate your intent. It won't always work but it's a tool you can use to get an advantage
Honestly Skill Capped is the best LoL Channel
Cool but what do I do if I have an auto filled adc that has chosen yasuo and tries to all in every time he has his ult?
I miss when they showed us the bad guy then show us challenger guy
Are your guides able to get challenger elo? im a master player and I dont know if with your anual plan I can get more than masters+ or this is just for diamond players and below
with my very limited knowledge id that you should play a lot and just review your games honestly, most of what they talk about on here, atleast on yt, is heavily skewed towards low elo players.
idk about their service though
5:40, do you think they couldve crashed the wave in time if soraka helped pushing? Because i feel like slowpushing might actually be their best bet no? With fiddle pathing down and maybe a yone tp they could slowpush and look for a dive.
At 5:35 would it be wrong to stack 2 waves by only lasthitting and recall after crashing or would trist and sona have the chance to all in and win?
And then there are my iron lobbys where my ADCs ping me when I try to help them get their farm quicker
If i subscribe can i watch videos in different languages like italian or it is available just english? Tanks.
Tip 4 pissed me off because I knew it was right but I constantly get flamed for it
I don't exactly agree with the starting point, for this particular game example.
Does anyone know what support is in the thumbnail? I can only recognize Jinx and Blitz..
pretty sure its spirit blossom thresh
Sounded like senna when you said Sona super quick lol
For someone who was hard stuck in gold for 3 years, I'm proud to say this channel got me to plat 1, almost diamond... but I fell all the way down to plat 4, and believe me when I say I went on a 20 game losing spree because of my team literally being 0-10 before 10 minutes.. if this ever happens to you uninstall the game and reinstall.. it kinda fixed the issue of me getting cursed with doodoo silver players in plat
Lol switching account you mean
I am main Support
I was watching now tons of videos about how to be a better support after I startet playing ranked again..
Laning phase as support? whats that?
For the things where youre saying "its probably clear to everyone... ... Is the vest thing to do rn" could you maybe make a video on things like that? Things you think are obnoxiously obvious, cus usually thats where I f up in game. Idk why but I think since everyone assumes its obvision for me like it is for them I never run into advice on it. Coming frm a non famer stantpoint I couldnt even move my character properly, I didnt know you couldnt duo top ect ect
I wanna try something.
As apparently a lot of people watching these Videos want to get better, myself included, but complain about their Teammates not knowing about basic stuff like the lvl 2 Spike how about this:

I watched all of this and liked it but the thing all these people making guides like this don't realize that our teammates are potatoes, and that it doesn't matter

What to do when adc has no idea what they are doing
This fucking hurts my eyes I hate low elo even tho I'm eloinflated master at least I know what to do and when
Goddamnit i love league
Can't carry with yasuo support
Supports lane instead of Perma roam? Damn
depens on lane matchup and support u pick.
this kind of stuff is like the armchair sweatlords guide to the game. quarterbacking the plays after the fact when nobody is out there strategizing that hard in the moment. i counted off about 4-5 seconds between the level 1-2 changeover between the blue vs red teams. thats expecting them to dodge the incoming aoe and destroy both people in 5 seconds on a planned engagement on the fly. and thats assuming they knew they had 5 seconds to begin with. hindsight quarterbacking like that isnt a genuine reflection of what happens in game. is anyone out there mentally calculating how many minions people have been in range to get xp from died to actually make an educated guess on when the opponent is going to level? i never want to meet said individual.
So you are in... iron?
Second
supports are usually worse than 4 other players in team, it's boosted role with huge impact if someone now the basics. When Im tired of playing mid/adc i' play support to climb
thats the most midlane main comment I have ever seen
@@azfrajer man it's 100% true. Most supports only stay behind adc and afk. I don't see any difference between gold or d4 support. It's better in higher divisions
What a toxic and stupid comment...Supp is easier mechanically most times, but is more macro focused
@@Typhoonflame It is mostly true however and I do not care if you will call me "toxic" and "stupid". We are not talking about support as a role but about most support mains. The only thing they do is to exist in lane and hope that will get carried. Most low elo (plat and below) have zero understanding about the fundamentals of the game, no knowledge about wave management, no knowledge about warding, no knowledge about when to roam, nothing. They just stay in lane and throw a few abilities and that's about it.
Those supports who play other roles as well are usually good. Those who play only support and have never bothered with other roles, are just bad at the game and hope to get carried
