      Michael Lisi You must be a glutton for punishment!
      I haven't yet had the opportunity to shoot anything bigger than a .300 H&H magnum, and my own single high-powered rifle is a Ruger M77 .30-06, but I'd like to see how some of the heavier artillery is to fire.
      Oh, I forgot to mention that I have fired a .50 BMG, but that was the M2, so I didn't really have to deal with the recoil because those are tripod-mounted.
      It sure was a hell of a lot of fun, though!

    Hello from Australia. I built a .458 WM in the late 1970's. I used a 24" barrelled Mauser Magnum action in the white and a good-quality semi-inletted stock with handsome grain. The inletting took quite a long time without using long gunsmith's inletting studs; fit, smoke, file, refit, repeat. I set the barrel ring of the receiver and the first 4" of the barrel in bedding epoxy with one recoil cross-pin. I deliberately kept the stock as full as appropriate in order to keep the weight at 10 pounds. I fitted a Williams Foolproof receiver sight and a Williams shorty front sight with a medium white bead.
    It turned out a very lovely economically-priced rifle and not at all difficult to carry and shoot. The .458 WM is a peach.

    I had a budget 458 Win Mag built on a MARK X action. Whoever had it built must have intended to carry it alot as it sported a relatively thin 20-inch barrel with a aperture rear sight. A nice thing about rifles in 458 Win Mag is the prices for used ones are pretty decent - probably because of the limited use in the lower 48 and high ammo cost.

    I’d really like to see what these safari cartridges do in gel blocks. We’ve all seen what standard hunting rounds do in gel and I’d like to see the difference. Don’t get me wrong... I like to watch watermelon juice being made just as much as the next guy but I’ve never seen real wound tracks from these cartridges. Some clay test would be just as cool. Maybe 300 win mag vs safari cartridges. Now that’s a video.

    • @stevef3399
      @stevef3399 6 лет назад

      Hunter_Jordan is right - the 458 is all about penetration, and not explosiveness. High velocity rounds like a 300 WM will do more damage to gel blocks, but generally won't penetrate as far.

    In all honesty, and having never fired a .458, I am surprised by how little you were actually shoved back with the recoil. (We've all seen those clowns shooting the A-Square T-Rex, I'm sure.) And the muzzle flip was surprisingly minimal as well. No doubt that's because you know what you're doing. Thanks for sharing your techniques and knowledge. Well done, indeed.

    The technique for holding that rifle was what I was taught at a young age by my old Army father. Only weapon I fired like that I wasn’t comfortable with was an old side by side break open 10 gauge. Asshole that leant it to us gave me T-shot shells for a 15 year old. I held 3 shells and felt like I dislocated my right arm for 3 days. Gave me more confidence with a 30-06 and other calibers.

    I have that same rifle in .458 Win Mag as well. It also did not feed the big round nose 500 grain bullets especially well. I didn’t want anything to eat me while I was attempting to chamber a round. Bought a Remington model 700 in .458 Mag and used it on brown bear and Cape buffalo. I believe that had I been using the Ruger, I might well have developed some Cape buffalo related health issues one morning several years back.

    Another nice hint for helping absorb the recoil on these big bores is (as a right handed shooter) making sure you keep that right elbow high - like you do, have the elbow pointing almost to the horizon, instead of at 45 degrees to the ground, or directly at the ground.

    • @f5tornadeau
      @f5tornadeau 6 лет назад +1

      GReeNORB is that true? I would think the opposite is true. If you raise your elbow, you’re spreading your shoulder/upper pectoral muscles, giving yourself less natural padding. I can’t say I’ve ever thought about it much as the most powerful rifle cartridge I’ve shouldered is a .300 Win mag.

    • @BatcatCA
      @BatcatCA 6 лет назад +2

      f5tornadeau hold your left hand where the butt of the rifle would go in your right shoulder. Raise your elbow and feel your pec and shoulder tense more. Compare the feeling when your elbow points at the ground. The tense muscle helps absorb/resist the heavy recoil more than a slack one does. It's the technique I use when shooting a .375 Ruger, which has rather a lot of recoil.
