I have owned a Ruger No.1 338WM since 1996, and it is my favourite hunting rifle (African bush) for the following reasons: It is as fast as a shotgun and actually has the same safety mechanism - you never miss on a 1 second quick opportunity; Even with a 26" barrel, it is far shorter and lighter than any bolt action rifle - it is a pleasure to walk with it the whole day long; There is no drop in the heel of the stock and recoil is only backwards - no problem of hitting the eye with a mounted scope.
Classic Rifle. Someone once wrote ‘have you ever met a hunter carrying a single shot rifle who did not know what they were doing?’. I liked that line. Awesome calibre! Like the way it could take down a Grizzly in self defence but still flat shooting at long range. Thank you 🇺🇸 🇳🇿
Saw someone suggested a Glock with a switch for a woods carry gun, I'd still feel better with any auto pistol in 9mm up than I would with a single shot rifle unless it's a rail gun shooting a train track
One thing I love about his videos is that there is no unnecessary editing. I’ve seen some RUclipsr have 6 cuts in one single sentence. Hickok45 never fails to deliver.
I'm a big fan of single shot rifles, but this rifle is more than that. The gentleman in question brightened my day with his refined style of presentation of such a unique item. I don't know if the man is alive anymore, if he is, may God grant him a long and healthy life. Milenko from the Balkans.
I have a Ruger No1 in 218 Bee. I love the styling and look of the rifle. If they weren't so expensive, I would have a bunch of them. Especially in the more classic cartridges such as 7x57 or 300 H&H
My buddy has one in .458 magnum. He got it for Christmas in 1982. The first weekend in 1983 we shot it from the bench. I fired seven rounds with a light jacket on. My nose was bleeding! Haha Both of us have always enjoyed big bore rifles! That was a great day! Much more comfortable to shoot standing so you can lean into heavy recoil!!
I've never shot a Ruger #1 but I've owned a nearly 50 year old Browning Model 78 in 25-06 since it was new. By far, that falling block single shot is my favorite rifle. The single shots are just so very solid and elegant.
I've owned several #1's in various calibers. The accuracy varies from acceptable to cant hit a barn at 40 yards. I had a .22-250 one that basically shot patterns at 100 yards and then a .416 Rigby that stacked them inside an inch at 100. They are incredibly finicky rifles due to everything hanging off the barrel
@@gearjammergamer8560 The B-78 has a square bar affixed to the action, underneath the barrel. The barrel is completely free-floated. I used that 25-06 all summer for groundhogs. I knocked off a pickup truck full of those little rascals at ranges out to 450 yards.

My single shot is an Enfield 1896 Falling Block converted to 303 Brit. I think it was originally a black powder gun, which I had slightly modified to have contemporary sights. Also, I've a Remington rolling block in 7x57 from 1864.
I have had a Ruger #1 in a wildcat 30-338 since 1984. Extremely accurate and flat shooting gun. One thing you can do with a #1 is sand the interior of the wood on the forearm to increase the space between the wood and the barrel. The forearm is held onto the barrel with a single screw to a forearm hanger. If the wood is touching the barrel, as the barrel heats up it will push on the wood and the point of aim will change and the rifle will become less accurate as the barrel vibration changes continually as the barrel expands. Providing a slightly larger clearance between the forearm and the barrel eliminates the problem. It's the opposite of bedding the barrel because the gun has a separate stock and forearm.
I've always loved the simplicity of a single shot. I have a few, but never a Ruger No 1, but its on my list of rifles I hope to own one day. My Dad had one in 45-70 that I really wanted, but he traded it to my Uncle for something. I always feel like a single shot makes me a better hunter. I always try for 1 sot 1 kill, but a single shot keeps that in the back of mind more.

As far as the Ruger No1 I absolutely love the craftsmanship and quality put into every one. I will own one in either the hard hitting 338 or possibly the super fast velocity of the Ruger 204. No matter the caliber, it’s the quality as well as the piece of firearm history that I would hope would stay passed down for generations in my family. I own an Over/under 16 ga Merkel shotgun. That’s saying a lot when considering the monetary value of each firearm. In other words, the No1 is extremely an incredible work of art which can be bought at a fraction of what it’s worth.
Both of my Ruger #1s are beautiful in appearance and shoot with excellent accuracy. One is a 22-250 with a bull barrel the other, a very accurate .270. They are treasured. Also own a Ruger Model 77 in .338 Win Mag. Accurate as well--the first shot IS the most important! Lots of punch with the .338 in both directions. LOL
I used to own the Ruger #1 chambered in 22-250 with the bull barrel. A coyote slayer. Great for bench rest or prairie dogs, but to heavy for what I needed. Very well built firearm.

I had a Ruger #1 in .416 Rigby. Amazing caliber. Sako are good weapons too. Back then, I had a Sako 375 H&H converted to the 404 Jeffery caliber by a Nuremberg gunsmith. A .416 Rigby would not have fit into the system. At that time, such weapons were not yet common, even in America. I went hunting in the Czech Republic in the 90s with a Ruger No. 1 with Mannlicher stock and 20" barrel and caliber 7x57mm. I shot a roe buck there at 180 m. 7x57 is a good hunting cartridge. I also had a pre-war Mauser in 7x57 (1937). But actually I was a target shooter and one shot was enough. I am a German from Franconia and now live in Thailand.
hickok absorbs the kick of these big guns more than most of us would. i'm betting my shoulder would be sore after a good range session with that. former ibf supermiddle champ out of nashville caleb plant fighting undefeated former 2x wbc supermiddle champ david benavidez tonight in vegas. promises to be the proverbial shootout. hopefully tomorrow morning for sunday shootaround, only about 6 hours after the fight, when hickok lists the tennessee greats, plant will have added to that tennessee greatness.

Exactly why I am still on my same 20 round box of ammo after 10 years. It only takes one shot if you are patient and don't take ridiculous shots. Every deer I have taken has been inside of 150 yards and have only needed 1 shot.
I had a friend, Larry, that was spontaneous about going out and buying a gun, that no one where I grew up at would possibly own one like it. So he goes and buys a Ruger No. 1 in 458 Win. , brand new around 1993. He allowed me to shoot the first round though it after he had purchased it. Hadn’t thought about that in years. Accurate rifle for sure.
.338 Win Mag is my favorite cartridge and I have had #1 for about 20+ years. It poked a 3 shot group at 3/4" at 300 yds. and has taken a number of elk, caribou, and moose (1 shot) with Federal Premiums.
When I was young in my 20s Ruger no.1 in 458 was the my favorite and had often shot a box or two. Now in my 70s Ruger no.3 in 22 hornet is my favorite. It often produces one hole groups. I still love my no.1s and often shoot my 45-70. My son loves my 458. My no.1 in 22-250 produced 3/8” groups regularly. I regret selling it.
Certainly not the same quality, but both of my sons started hunting with H&R Handi Rifles in .243 with youth stocks. At the time you got a coupon for a free adult length stock and I ordered them. My oldest eventually moved on to a Marlin 336 in 30-30, his dream rifle. My youngest (now 26) still hunts with his single shot rifle. He calls is "killer" since he has never missed a deer with it. Single shot rifles are very cool in my opinion.
Fr mike I love the no.one In the past No.1 7mm Rem Mag Sporter No.1 45-70 gov't carbine No.1 .416 Rem Mag Tropical Loved em all...from my memory library i shot/owned. I found my recoil tolerance with the 416! Thanks for lighting a lamp!
What a fine piece of steel. Thank you, as always, Hickok! I wish Federal would make plinking ammo with cheap FMJ bullets in .338 Win Mag. It saddens me a bit to see those Partitions used this way. Norma makes those, but they're not cheap. One time at a range, I shot 30 rounds and ended up with a very bruised shoulder. But it was a blast and a very memorable evening.
Beautiful rifle. I've always wanted one. I wanted a full stocked modle in 7×57 mauser. They could be loaded pretty hot in a rifle like this. Great video. .338 Winchester is capable of taking any North American Game and effective for much in Africa too. God bless all here.
I bought a Ruger No.1 in 25-06 for my son because he shoots left handed and when I took it up to sight it in with reloads I put one right dead center at 100 yards so a friend of mine was impressed so I let him try it and he put his bullet in the same hole. He then went out and bought one in 25-06
I was into my gentleman's rifles for a while and owned 3 at one time. Varminter .220 Swift and a 200th year Liberty. 300 win.mag and a tropical. 458 win.mag. three guns i wish i had back.
I have a medium spotter in .338 Win. Mag. And I finally broke down and put on a scope. Didn’t want to but missed out on a nice bull elk last season because of low light in timber. In order to determine if it was large enough to shoot I needed my binoculars. By the time I got the rifle up and squeezed off that big guy turned. I was only moments late. 21:24
Became a ballistic and reloading nut several years ago, don’t know if Al Gore had even invented the internet at that time. Beginning of the video has great info that I learned through the books. Have a good Sunday shoot around tomorrow…..life is good.
Another wonderful video. Topic rich and great to see a big magnum at work. Which I could not justify having. Yes a wonderful topic in the calibre it's origins and the falling block No1. Sturm Ruger. As it was when I first discovered Ruger. I did have a SR 10/22.
I just bought a collection of 10 Ruger No. 1s. from an uncle. Before I saw the collection I found a Ruger box in the garage where the safes were, it was a box for one of these rifles SN 133-27433. The box still had the tent card in it saying it was one of 550 produced. I went through the safes and figured I would find it since there were 10 rifles and only one box, as luck would have it that rifle wasn’t there. The uncle said he must have sold it, anyway he sent the box with me so I figured I would put it out there to try and reunite the box with the gun. If anyone has that serial number I can hook them up. All wasn’t lost though because I did find a 375 H&H that looks just like your rifle without the engraving.
I had a Number one in .308 many years ago. This one was customized a little. Dark walnut Stock with a Shnabel forend. The barrel seemed a bit heavier than normal and I bought a Leica scope for it. The rifle was scary accurate and I used it to hunt whitetails. Beautiful rifle!
Birmingham (England) Proof House has what looked like a Farquharson actioed rifle, the rifle has lots of fixings or ports on the top of the barrel and I think it was used to measure copper units of pressure along the length of the barrel. The proof house also has a Ruger No1 with the action/receiver destroyed. Apparently someone loaded a 308 into a 25-06 and the ogive/chamber dimensions are sufficient to allow the primer to be initiated. The receiver failed by blowing the left wall off this happened because the extractor on the left of the chamber and the gases took that route as the easiest place to flow. I have a picture of it somewhere. I was told that the shooter was not injured, something I found quite surprising!
Y'all ever see the movie national treasure with Nicholas Cage when there inside Mount Rushmore and the finally find that room and he light the oil when that room lights up it's just hickok45 and his arsenal with not scrolls from the library at Alexandria but scrolls from the collection of Sunday shoot around life is good lol best dude in the firearms realm
Beautiful rifle. A real pounder. I have a Ruger No.3 which you seem to see less of. Chambered in 45-70. Also have a No.3 in 22 Hornet which I loaned my son for coyotes but I don't think he wants to give back to me for some reason.

former ibf supermiddle champ out of nashville caleb plant fighting undefeated former 2x wbc supermiddle champ david benavidez tonight in vegas. promises to be the proverbial shootout. hopefully tomorrow morning for sunday shootaround, only about 6 hours after the fight, when hickok lists the tennessee greats, plant will have added to that tennessee greatness.
Just found your videos on Facebook I'm down for the pot smoking and uzi shooting! Keep up the great work ! The black community loves ya Greg
Glad you found us, but the videos at on our RUclips channel; I just link over on Facebook sometimes as a reminder that we've posted another video.
We don't cater to any particular community. Well, actually, I suppose I'm wrong on that; we cater to ANYBODY who has interest in firearms and/or the Second Amendment. :-)
I love the fact that as I move around town or other parts of the country that people of literally every age, race, gender, religion, etc. come up to me and express their enjoyment of our videos.
@@hickok45 well I'm a 30 year old mixed father of 3 kids ! And I love your content ! Keep it up just know you have are support ! It's refreshing to know it's okay just to be a man and like to do man stuff with all this cancel culture
When the shoulder needs to be punished!! Even the reviews of his I don’t agree with I still can’t stop watching. GOAT
My grandpa has one of these in .204 Ruger. Pushes a .32 grain bullet over 4000 fps. It has the most beautiful stock too.
Definitely a Ruger No 1 fan!
27:36 "a great gun for defense" I love this
Thank you sir for making my morning better reloading while watching this im reloading my 338-378 weatherby as i watch this
What a beautiful piece and has some kick!! Love your content sir and the knowledge you share. 🇺🇸
Hickok is as good a shootist as has ever been ,a decent human being for sure.
.338 win mag is absolutely my fav cartridge.
extremely high ballistic coeffecient.
Thanks to you guys I still want one in 375 H&H. What a thumper.
Mr. Hickok that is one beautiful piece of art...
.338 Win Mag is my favorite cartridge and I have had #1 for about 20+ years.

My first hunting rifle was an H&R .243. Still have it and shoot it on occasion.
Have a ruger number one in 2506. Have had it for 35 years
Fr mike
I love the no.one
In the past
No.1 7mm Rem Mag Sporter
No.1 45-70 gov't carbine
No.1 .416 Rem Mag Tropical
Loved em all...from my memory library i shot/owned. I found my recoil tolerance with the 416!
Thanks for lighting a lamp!
Hickok 45 Sir.. Hope you always be in good health and give us such nice Gun videos on RUclips for many more years to come 👍
What a fine piece of steel.
That ruger is beautiful & very cool!
You must have the best backyard ever! Lots of fun! Enjoy your videos, this reminded me of my Dad's 45-70 Ruger.
That's one "purty" rifle!
What a stunning rifle... Your are awesome my friend glad to see you are still rolling out videos..
I just got a Henry single shot 12g, went skeet shooting with it, my goodness it’s the most fun I ever had. Makes shooting simple and satisfying.
Gorgeous weapon... you do a great job with it! .338 win mag is a helluva round!
I have always loved you vidios.thankyou for all your do for us Hitchcock. Keep it coming.
That’s a very nice piece. There’s something so appealing about archaic guns.
What a beautiful rifle.
Thanks for sharing your latest addition.
I learned every thing about shooting from my papa with alot older version of this rifle ,solid piece I'll never let it go .
How did I miss this gem. I been looking for single shot like this. It reminds me of the old days
Sure love mine.
i have a Ruger 1V in 7mm Mag, and the Liberty model at that. I love it. It weighs about 2,000lbs so recoil is gentle
Fabulous rifle, love the the deer logo.
Another wonderful video. Topic rich and great to see a big magnum at work. Which I could not justify having. Yes a wonderful topic in the calibre it's origins and the falling block No1. Sturm Ruger. As it was when I first discovered Ruger. I did have a SR 10/22.
Single shot rifle and a one eyed dog. Here come the Ken folk to plink some steel. Ole Hickok 45…👍🇺🇸🦅👍🇺🇸🦅💯
That rifle is absolutely gorgeous !!!! I've got a buddy who has a similar rifle chambered in 7 mag, although it's not nearly as pretty !!!!
We all know old boy knows his business, but even the thumbnail was great. Thanks for the channel!
A one of a kind classic shot by a one of a kind classic - life is GOOD !
Beautiful rifle. A real pounder. I have a Ruger No.3 which you seem to see less of. Chambered in 45-70. Also have a No.3 in 22 Hornet which I loaned my son for coyotes but I don't think he wants to give back to me for some reason.
I've got a #1-B chambered in 7mm STW. Phenomenal rifle. It's killed a lot of elk
Was lucky enough to find a barely used .375 No.1 accurate and fun with those big boolits. Beautiful in it's simplicity.
I've always wanted one of these chambered in 308 win
That is a real beauty Hickok, I would love to own a few, they are just a bit out of my price range, my school teacher back in the 80s had a #1 rsi or international with the full length stock carbine length barrel in 308 boy was that one sharp looking gun and handy of course we were just young kids but occasionally he would take us out on a fall grouse hunt and let us shoot her boy does your video bring back some nostalgia!!
