Interesting story: they were trying to get rid of the krag rifle so they gave them away/ sold them dirt cheap as hunting guns. So my Great Great Grandad, in the mountains of North Carolina, bought one. So my grandad has an 1898 krag he got from his dad. Real cool!
I'm an actor, so I don't usually get to fire actual bullets, but I've fired a lot of real guns. Most guns are about as heavy as you expect them to be, because they're made of steel. My first modern gun was the M4A1; it's shockingly light. So is the M82. And even at high caliber, you don't even feel it. No wood, very little steel, crazy easy to fire--especially if you have a crew of weapons handlers on set. Someone handed me the M82 because I had proven to be the only competent gun guy on set. As if a total beginner, he explained, "This is safe mode," and then I flipped it and said, "This is nobody's safe mode," and we laughed our butts off.
The British Land Pattern Musket, colloquially known as the “Brown Bess”, was the most common long arm in use during the American Revolution. Due to the fact that male citizens of the thirteen North American colonies were required by law to own arms and ammunition for militia duty, the Brown Bess became the de facto standard for the Colonial Army. Many households in rural areas owned rifled muskets, such as the famed Kentucky Long Rifle, which were more suitable for taking game. While rifles were significantly more accurate than a smooth bore musket, they were not without their disadvantages. 1.) Black powder produces substantial fouling which will quickly accumulate in the rifling, severely diminishing the advantage a rifle has over a musket. 2.) To take advantage of a rifle’s accuracy, the ball must fit snugly in the bore. This right fit makes reloading much slower, especially when fouling begins to build up. When compared to conventional muskets, rifles weren’t capable of producing the same volume of fire. 3.) Rifled barrels were significantly more expensive to produce, limiting their availability and effectiveness on the battlefield.

The M16 we had in Vietnam had a 20 round magazine. We'd tape two back-to-back so you could turn it over and fire the second magazine without having to reach for a pouch. When I first arrived in-country, in early 1969 I had an M-14 w/ the auto adapter. I changed units and received the M-16.

We still had a couple of guys carry M-14’s because they wanted more penetrating power with the thick jungle vegetation. Well done Hickok!

1863 Springfield could reliably hit a man out to 400 yards. Volley fire was used in the Civil War mainly due to lack of mass-producable sights and slow reloading. John Sedgwick was killed at 1000 yards by a Confederate sharpshooter with a hand-made scoped Whitworth Rifle. His last words were "Why are you dodging? They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance!".
I've got a nice Springfield 1903-A3. Thanks Dad. It amazes me what I can hit with it, and how much damage I can do with that 30-06 cartridge, just with iron sights. Entering WWII, what our riflemen could hit with these guns originally designed in 1903 gained a lot of respect in Europe.
I remember when I was active duty in the Navy and carrying the M14 on watch thinking, “Wow! What a old and outdated rifle...” I was also enlisted during the transition to the M16 and I had no idea what a privilege I had at the time to fire that amazing firearm!
I was assigned to the Westchester County LST 1167 from Dec. 68 until July 70. We did a 5 month deployment just of the mouth of the Mekong River providing support to swift boat crews, UDT guys and two HU1Bs. I got to fire a BAR and an Ma tube, lots of fun with both weaponds.
When I went through Navy boot camp in 1966, we used 1903 Springfields in close order drill. They were non firing, but even after 50+ years I can still perform the manual of arms.
That M1903 is absolutely gorgeous! That patina...provenance...a clean, original specimen, such as this one, are getting super rare. Well purchased, Good Sir.

wow, just looking at the delay between pulling the trigger and the round being fired is a major way to see how far firearm and ammo technology has come.
I heard they actually called the Flintlock pistols "Flinchlock" pistols because it was very easy to flinch from the first strike which would throw off your aim before the powder burned.
Flintlock response was the Latency Lag of the 1700s
Anon ElectricSheep Yeah with patches 19 and 20 you can tell the developers really focused on getting lag down and frames up.
Yup mostly from the desire to kill more humans unfortunately .

I always love the double explosion you get on a flintlock rifle

Woah this comment got hearted even after 9 yrs!
How much do you recon a flintlock would cost back then? How much did a farm hand make.
@@earnestwebster8580 depends on the farm and where you lived, the colonies beetwen the south and New England had amazing soil for farms and the south could grow Tabacco to transport to Britain which made the most money along with cotton of course. But in order to even survive during those times you would’ve had to have a firearm anyways, to hunt for food, and for protection, as well as it being stated In law as well.
Required to own weapons and ammo for militia duty! How times have changed...
The Kentucky rifle was perfect for sharpshooters, but for standard line infantry a rifled musket would have been impractical, I agree.
Damn, that flint lock was really delayed.
All the powder has to ignite
It builds the suspense.

HOW IS HE THAT ACCURATE WITH THOSE ANCIENT ASS RIFLES
1863 Springfield could reliably hit a man out to 400 yards. Volley fire was used in the Civil War mainly due to lack of mass-producable sights and slow reloading. John Sedgwick was killed at 1000 yards by a Confederate sharpshooter with a hand-made scoped Whitworth Rifle. His last words were "Why are you dodging? They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance!".
He used them for his service of course.
Hes been shooting guns before u were born
I've got a nice Springfield 1903-A3. Thanks Dad. It amazes me what I can hit with it, and how much damage I can do with that 30-06 cartridge, just with iron sights. Entering WWII, what our riflemen could hit with these guns originally designed in 1903 gained a lot of respect in Europe.
