When I started reloading back in 1983. People told me that I would just shoot more. Well that turned out to be true. So it's a win win thing. Lower cost per round and more trigger time. Then add in the panic buying and I still have plenty so I don't have to pay inflated prices.

Hickock45, you are more than just our internet shooting companion- you are a firearms legend and a mentor. I and so many others have learned an unbelievable amount about guns in general, during the time that we have watched you. We really have been blessed to have you show us guns that not all of us can acquire...but thanks to your natural talent as a teacher- we understand their history and proper operation. Sometimes when watching your videos- I feel like I am back in school...lol. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and love of firearms with us over the years.

I get that zen feeling working on cars/trucks. When a child, I first experienced it (zen feeling) when I bought my first 1858 Army cap and ball revolver from a guy working at Columbia, California (Historic State Park) at a mine store. Hi name was Gil. Just so happened he was a black powder national champion. First shot with a .357 Mag was a 125 grain jacketed hollow point from Remington (premium stuff) out of an old Model 28 Smith. Oh, the muzzle blast was so impressive. We appreciate the full length videos discussing the history and mechanics. Shorts are great for ADHD people and those addicted to other social media. We're actually interested in learning.

Good to hear your behind your press. I start reloading in 1985. My dad taught me and he started in 1965 about the same age as when I started. It's great that Federal ammunition sponsor's you. They are a great company. I use thier primers whenever possible. They work better on my milsurp firearms that have weak springs. The Federal primers are always my go to. I still have at least 2 cases of each size and type of primers. I have sold some to friends at the normal price. I'm not going to gouge my friends. If I paid $150 a case well $30 a brick is what I would hook them up with. I stopped when I hit 2 cases each. I bought 20 5 gallon buckets of range scrap and smelted it down to lead and copper. I make ingots out of both and the copper pays for my powder and primers and powder coating supplies. I built my own kiln to melt the copper down and bought 2 5 lb and 2 1 lb graphite molds. It makes for a fun weekend and I get all the neighborhood kids come over and watch. Of course I'm outside and I make the kids stand back and upwind. I even get a few adults that were interested in reloading. I say were because I have already taught them how to reload. I have taught 5 of my neighbors how to shoot and put them through the basic NRA class. It's a very safe block in the neighborhood. We call ourselves the Benton street shooting club. All 5 of us belong to the same pistol club. It feels good to be able to help them out. Sorry to go on and on about my crap. I love it that you have the 3 single action revolvers in succeeding serial numbers. There was a guy in Denver that had a huge single action collection that he had on display at his gunstore. I bought my Inland M1A1 carbine from him. Anyway he had 5 I think engraved succeeding serial number Colt SAA from a long time ago. I don't remember when. I doubt he is still open he was in his 60's 22 years ago. We have done a lot of swapping.

Single actions I have discovered are a lot of fun. I have a Ruger wrangler and I have had a tremendous amount of fun shooting it. I first bought it because it was inexpensive and the ammo is not bad either. I like to take a little time and enjoy loading and shooting it. I like to call it lead Therepy. I also enjoy spending time with my reloading press but I’m new to reloading about two years now. I have just a few calibers that I load. I live in North Carolina but I was born in Tennessee, I also enjoy watching your videos. Thanks for you spending time with us.

The original Colt .45 cartridge cartridge case although suitable for revolver use was not rimmed adequately to allow for repeating long rifle use due to difficulty for claw extractor to grip from chamber.
Had the case been delivered then as improvements in intervening years have morphed it into it would have been an even more popular loading.
The revolver utilized a hand activated push pin type of ejector system not subject to rim robustness.
Today the shooting public can enjoy the benefits of his wheel gun an long gun in the wonderful .45 Colt cartridge.

I believe that the process of adding things to soft lead bullets to make them harder came about with the onset of smokeless powder and metallic cartradges. As you know smokeless powder generates a lot more pressure and velocity then black powder does. Who came up with the idea where or when it was actually done what year I couldn't tell you. And I'm not real sure about adding tin. Although it dose add some hardness it is used mostly for mold fill out. Yes I know this because I cast my own. Even for my AR 15.

Also, great advice about following cop directions. When I get stopped I turn on the dome light and clamp both hands at the top of the wheel where he can see them, and answer “yes, officer” and “no, officer.” Nobody wants a nervous LEO.

    Gun ownership protects people.
Criminals get guns illegally and if legal citizens can't protect themselves then criminals will win.
The bigger picture is what we should look at that it's a fascist idea to take away gun ownership in order to force policies on the free.
Venezuela outlawed guns in 2013 now their government is killing anyone they disagree with.

Single actions are just so enjoyable..when I saw you with the catleman I just had to have one .I'm also very interested in civil war firearms and the history. Some of the things I read that stick out at me ,talking about the carnage, is how people were thinking at the time oh there's going to be a battle up the road let's have a picnic and go watch not understanding the horrors of war

I’m meeting my 401k and HSA goals right now in my 30’s. It gives me immense piece of mind as I work to finish off student loan debt and build our savings (my wife and I). It also keeps us from buying lots of stupid things we don’t need. We’ve passed up offers on a few new car deals and also stayed in our perfectly comfortable cheap college apartment a couple years longer while I get out of debt. By the time the debt is gone in the next three years, we’ll have at least $3,000 a month in savings on top of my retirement. Savings are on hold until then, but we have a good rainy day fund that has already covered our medical emergencies.
Since I have a progressive disease that may disable me in the next few decades, I’ve put a big emphasis on health and financial preparation NOW. But the same logic should apply to everyone. Clawing your way out of debt, saving, and investing in retirement gets less and less possible as you wait. It’s never too early to grow up, put aside the silly things, and build your future.

Just recently acquired my first Colt SAA….hooked on the old guns :)

  • @gary16217

There is a way to carry a SAA safely with SIX cartridges in the cylinder. However, you must take a special action. It is dangerous to have a live round under the hammer and there is not enough room between the case heads to lower the hammer and firing pin between two cartridges. I have an 1851 Navy colt that has small pins on the back of the cylinder between chambers on which you lower the hammer with all 6 chambers loaded. This is safe in the Navy and it gave me the idea of how to do the same thing with the SAA. Simply take a small triangular file and file a small notch in the rims of two cartridges. Then carefully load the gun making sure that the two cartridges are in adjacent chambers with the cartridges rotated until the two notches are next to each other, leaving room for the firing pin to fit into the notches.

Thank you for all the great videos over the years. My favorites are when you just sit around on the porch and shoot the breeze with others. I was just curious if you have a fan favorite list and if you do where is it I cant find one, if not we got to get busy working on it.

Took me a year for a .22 suppressor and a bunch of headache. Don’t understand why it takes that long, it’s frustrating. Got it for raccoons and possums eating my chickens at night and didn’t want to wake the neighbors.

Great off hand revolver accuracy on display here.
Pistol powder tends to be faster burning rates to maximize relatively short barrel lengths.
To slow would result in velocity loss due to powder burning in atmosphere exiting muzzle.
Proper land/grove dimensions for bullet diameter important for imparting stability in flight for bullet ballistic characteristics. Proper twist rate for intended bullets as well.
After exit of barrel the effects of air resistance and gravity impinge upon projectile as well as prevailing cross wind conditions. The expert shootist knows to “ dope “ for these factors to place in the ten ring at practical distances.
“ there was forty feet between them when they stopped to make their play”
Martin Robbins, Glendale Arizona, “ big iron “.
Early metallic cases were oft made of softish copper. The soldiers at the battle of Little Big Horn discovered to much consternation that the Trap Door Springfield could extraction process tear through rim leaving gun essentially inoperable. In the heat of battle not the most desirable condition.
Ambergris upon cartridge exterior could result in excessive drag for removal from chamber. Especially while still hot from firing process.

I like my Umberti 1873 Cattlemen replica so far. I have never owned a 45 Colt until a few days ago. I can't find ammo on any store shelf. Lucky for me, I can easily measure out about 8.4 grains of CFE pistol powder for each case that own and I have plenty of primers, bullets, and powder.
I only found 15 spent pieces of brass of Colt 45 in my pile of random range brass pickup over many years of visits. I am lucky to have this small amount of brass because I can't find it anywhere on the range or on the shelf during my more recent visits. I bought a set of Hornady dies for Colt 45 about a year ago because I was hoping to get a lever gun that can eat 454 Casull or 45 Colt. I still do not have the lever gun but will continue my search.
Lucky for me, I load for Bushmaster 450, and 45 ACP. I managed to get get the cases loaded with pistol powder and 250 grain XTP bullets. I also made a single round with a 225 grain Hornady FTX that required me to shorted the case a bit. I normally use these 225 grain FTX bullets in my Bushmaster 450 loads. I am not sure if I am going to try the 250 grain ftx in the Colt 45 because there is no cannelure on these 250 grain FTX because they are rifle bullets meant for the Bushmaster 450.
Either way, I love feeding the 45 ACP, 45 Colt, and Bushmaster 450 with cheap .451"/.452" bullets in addition to the more expensive Hornady FTX bullets.
