I find it so strange that everyone is shouting for cheaper EVs with good range and charge ability. Then wen a brand makes a cheaper EV the reviewers all say oh the problem is cheap plastics and use words like cost cutting. It's not cost cutting at all MG have made a cheap (or cheaper) EV than the VW brands and uses similar materials as what is in the Corsa E for a lot less money. It has great range and decent interior for the price compared to its competitors. Has a better infotainment than VW and again much cheaper. We should be celebrating a brand with a 7yr warranty finally making cheaper EVs rather than cutting them down saying they are using cheaper plastics etc, of course they are they are making a cheaper EV. For the price the spec list and warranty and range, charge etc is very very good!

But no matter James. The car will stand in the market, and buyers will make their own judgements. Those whom deem the overall quality, or the fit and finish not quite to their liking, will have the option of paying more for something else.....

99.5% of reviewers are correctly representing this car. Unfortunately this particular reviewer has a problem with anything that isn't a Tesla. I remember him talking down the Kia EV6 and saying similar stuff. The MG 4 is a true game changer and IF enough cars can be imported I can see it being the #1 ev best seller, easily

What nobody talks about is that MG is a state owned Chinese brand. So all your money goes to a dictatorship that threatens neighbouring countries and has many human rights issues. And before someone whines about "but everything's made in China already"... there are alternatives and especially for cars, which is one of the biggest single investments most people will ever do, it doesn't hurt to think one more time.

    • @musclerent
      @musclerent 2 года назад +45

@@itekani Volvo are Chinese too with more Chinese brands arriving as soon as Q4 2022.
So what is the alternative to an MG at this price point...nothing comparable even remotely.
And it can't be ignored that many components in a Mercedes, BMW, VW group, Tesla, Stellantis group car and others are filled with Chinese bit and pieces.
Whilst I agree with you regarding China and what they are getting up to I really can't see an alternative apart from something smaller and more expensive and slightly less Chinese...that war has been lost many years ago...blame western politicians and greed

    • @itekani

@@musclerent The difference is Geely (that owns Volvo) is a private company, while SAIC (that owns MG) is state owned. Volvo also design and manufacture cars in Europe while MG is all made in China. It is not black or white, like you say, it is just that to me MG is the worst option in this regard.

    • @IwillBwaiting
      @IwillBwaiting 2 года назад +1

@@PaulMansfield The first idea that comes to my mind is that you could start with trying to understand what you are reading.
The next idea that comes to me is that I will point out one big thing you have missed completely. I am from Holland, aka the Netherlands. We have no brands atm that produce cars.
Many Dutch humans however drive a car. The ones that understood how things work in life made sure they put effort into their life. Most of those people care not what they need to spend, so they can choose any brand.
The ones that were busy with others or just not taking care of their own lives are now complaining that they cannot afford things and have to look for the cheapest thing available which fits within their budget to continue the path they chose. Those humans want the most for the least. No effort needed.
So the humans who are in charge of their body mind and soul, will go to a baker and not a supermarket. The baker is a bit further away and even costs but the bread is fresh and probably a bit more healthy.
I am fully aware of the brands that are being produced in the UK, but as with the baker; France produces cars as does Germany.
Both a bit further away and also probably a bit more dear, depending on the brand, but still pretty local. It never hurts to save up another year instead of spending now (if one has to!) and in the long run, a well put investment will come with rewards. One will either enjoy it longer or one can reap the benefits when one passes with it. Most German cars at least hold its value far better than most other brands (no matter the country or brand).
I will eloborate a bit further with an example:
At work some co-workers drive Asian cars and some drive (mainly) German cars but others are European.
The ones driving Asian cars always complain about how expensive life is, always go twice on holiday to an all-in resort in Turkey or Spain and buy a new car every 2-3 years.
The other co-workers never complain about money or expenses, go on holiday once per year or maybe once in two years, to Hawaii, or Scotland, and buy a new car every 4-5 years roughly. I can see this pattern throughout the whole company, no matter the level or working environment. The non-complainers are also more easy to deal wit, without all the fuzz, and get the things done, while not trying to get the things done and complaining about it seems more important than actually doing it.
      edit: elaborate

The 'Naff plastic covering' on the wheels reduces drag and can be removed to show off the alloy wheels underneath. Scratchy plastics, well I don't really notice them on my ZS EV Trophy Connect series 2. However, when we rented a 'premium' Audi in Sweden, my expectations did not meet the reality. There were a lot of 'scratchy plastics' and nowhere near the tech found in the MG.
I always remember going to the launch of the Land Rover Discovery. After going over all sorts of obstacles, the driver turned to me and said: 'Land Rover, I don't know how they do it for the money!' I don't think he'd get away with it now, but MG certainly would!

Test drove the MG4 last week (SE version) and was blown away by it. The cheaper interior doesn't shout itself as being cheap - it's actually pretty tolerable! I've ordered the Long Range Trophy for the extra spec. This review is quite balanced, and comments about the infotainment system are also fair. However, two buttons on the steering wheel are programmable, including complete control of the aircon which means you dont' have to scroll around the infotainment system for it whilst driving. Great fun to drive, and can't wait to pick mine up this coming week.

and they will in due time as battery manufacturing becomes cheaper, I recall reading that the battery alone costs around £10K+. the reality is that the adoption rate needs to be gradual in order for the infrastructure to improve for the masses.

That's where the used market comes in. There are now used EV's around, so you don't *have* to buy new. There are now even dealers whom sell only used EV's and nothing else...... Many are able to offer help and advice for first time EV buyers, and can provide things like SOH (state of health) reports on battery condition, charge cables etc......

I don't think you'd get much change out of £25 - £30k for most Brand New Vehicles these days, so I would argue that this car is excellently priced. The equivalent new ford focus starts life at £23k

The ZS has been criticised from day 1 for the interior plastics, having owned one for ages I can say they are more than durable - I don’t really understand why this review focused on comparing it to other MG cars?

MG need a premium performance car to revive its sports car brand

That isn't really the direction they seem to be going in though. MG seem more focussed on building sales in the value for money sector.

Fur such electric car, it would make sense to also mention 0-35 (30) mph. much more interesting for city (or around) commute.

    Thanx for the early review.
Love or hate the MG4, cheap EV's are the most important category, as they get the most ICE engines off the roads and have the biggest impact on the environment.
Any progress in that segment is welcome, and most likely it will come from China as most Western companies are focusing on premium models it seems.
Looks like the only ones to seriously challenge Chinese manufacturers in that segment are the Koreans lately.
Almost everyone else has been left behind.

So basically its on par with id3 quality, has more physicall buttons and is 10k€ cheaper. If I'd have to pick, this is no brainer.

Very interesting review. Why do ordinary, "budget" cars need 200bhp and go to 60 in 8secs? Where are people going to use this performance? Surely half the bhp and twice the range would be more useful? How long are those screens going to last before they get faulty, and how much will they cost to repair?

3 year warranty on screen with MG..sadly MG do not provide the spec of the screen resolution.

It's interesting that most reviews of this car say go for the long range battery but never mention that the standard range battery is the more robust LFP chemistry.

You seemed to miss the programmable selectors which means you avoid having to use the touch screen for things like regen braking level, climate control etc. A BIG omission.
