I think the most impressive part of the entry model is how it is the first car to truly be price competitive with ICE cars. It is cheaper than an entry level 1.5 Golf. It's not far off the price of a base Vauxhall Astra. You get far more base tech, all that without considering the electrification.
Yes, spend the production costs on batteries, to make a long range cheap car, instead of luring customers with auxiliary gear that does nothing to improve the main objective; to drive.
yep bin the electric seats and make the range and price better. nothing more annoying than waiting for the seats to move back enough to get in when your shorter partner has used the car and its raining and you jave to lean in switch on the ignition first. its why i changed my seats in my e46 2nd hand bmw to manual versions that were identical
@@edwilko8819 Just your weight savings of manual seats is translatable into longer range. Car manufacturers are shooting themselves in the foot, not offering minimalist models because that means fewer batteries needed per vehicle as the vehicle gets lighter, so more cars off the line per year, also from an environmental perspective, a frugal EV needs less charging and as they can produce more of them the transition goes faster.
@@Tore_Lund you complain about features but when did YOU buy a brand new car? vote with your wallet. electric seats with memory is the best when it comes to sharing a car with your SO.
@@_TrueDesire_ Cost of new EVs is a road block, both sales wise and production wise and weight is the #1 kWh eater in city traffic. Must admit, I've never bought a new car: Not only a money issue, but I don't drive that much. My current EV is 20 years old and it was cheap too and had down payed it's footprint when I got it! I don't like the fat C-pillars of new cars, they give lousy rear visibility. Likewise the very thick doors, they make the whole vehicle wider. and they (the cars) are significantly heavier than 20-30 years ago because of that, so it is not only the infotainment system I'm complaining about. A rule of thumb, to have an agile EV that has also has reasonable range, is that battery weight is at least 1/3 of curb weight., That means that weight savings needs to be designed into the rest of the car. We have million $ Lambos with hand crank windows for weight savings, like to see more of that thinking with EVs. It would be like how affordable Chinese neighborhood EVs are made today, but instead of small 12kWh battery, you put 30-40kWh in it and get 350 km range and it would be a significantly cheaper vehicle too, than even short range full size European and US EVs, This MG is converging on that kind of thinking.
The main objective isn't to drive. The car companies main objective is to make money. Given the chronic battery shortage they are doing exactly what is in their best interest.
Now this is something I can get behind! Still out of my reach but give it a couple years, I'd definetly pick one up second hand. Car manufacturers, take note.
Just got my Trophy model two days ago - it replaced a 2 year old Evoque. Obviously very different cars, but I'm loving the MG and don't feel short changed for 'trading down' 🙂 A really nice car to drive and it has all the gadgets I need. Pricing is amazing - The only place where I can see obvious cost savings is the rear seats. Plenty of room, but a bit mean on luxuries like an arm rest and courtesy lights. That's fine by me and a sensible trade off. Love it!
Regarding the lack of light in the back - I was talking to someone the other day who has an MG5 and the same issue. On the MG5 there is a powered USB port on the rear view mirror area so he got some remote controlled LED lights that can be plugged into a USB, fastened them to the roof (MG5 has a sunroof which provided space) and ran them into the back of the car. He says it works great and was cheap and easy to do. Not sure if the MG4 has a similar USB port but it might be worth a look
Seen a magnetic light solution on RUclips...10 quid for 2 lights that stick to the roof with magnets. Bit poor you have to do it but the trade off seems worth it
Nothing beats independently powered AWD. You can feel the difference. Why many EV manufacturers use a single EV motors and transfer the power through mechanical differential and half-shafts to the wheels is counterproductive to EV efficiency. Having four independent direct-drive motors in the wheel hubs is a far more efficient means of power distribution. And I doubt the weight of four individual motors vs a single motor and drive train is the deciding factor. I guess some habits are hard to break from.
I agree. And I think that many Tesla owners and potential Tesla buyers will opt for cars like this once they realize how strong the specs are, how well made they are and how good they look. You save a ton of money and still get between 95% and 99% of the real benefits of going electric. The acceleration of a vehicle like the MG four is still far faster than a petrol car and it is a lot faster than most people will ever actually use. Accelerating faster than a car like the MG4 can accelerate is physically uncomfortable and it’s also highly dangerous.
AND...the 'fixed' battery means that this EV will have, essentially, ZERO resale value making it a 'disposable' vehicle. EV maker NIO avoids this with their battery swap technology. Any EV that does not have 'battery swap' tech = FAIL...regardless of 'price'.
I love the way you present the show. There are many channels that show cars but I find this channel entertaining in addition to being informative. Keep up the good work.
The Chinese companies are doing magic to these car brands they acquired. All these dying or dead brands got somehow revived. First Volvo, Lotus, Proton by Geely, then MG.
Nice design. Plenty of obviously great points as an EV, but one thing I liked about the rear hatch - it's a squared-off shape, which means this car will be useful for load-lugging more often than many realise. My wife used to drive a Citroën AX, which was a brilliantly efficient thing - she even carried an armchair in the back. Eventually swapped it for a Peugeot 206, a bigger car with a far more fiddly shaped hatch opening - no chance of getting anything as big in there. Well done, MG, this will sell loads!
A car after my head, heart and wallet. Thanks Bobby for another great review. I did notice an odd noise in the background. I think it was the sound of the boat that ford, Toyota, Mazda and everyone else without an EV hatchback just missed!
@@Enforcer_WJDE oh you have no idea. This segment is beginning to heat up nicely. I too am interested to see just what will be available to the masses in only a few short years. I personally am not sold on electric vehicles just yet but for the right price, I believe I can be easily persuaded.
Great review the car looks more up to date as the MG5, that’s what put me off buying a MG this one has changed my mind hopefully they will be plenty coming to the UK dealership
Hi I did not say this car was from a British company I know this Chinese are now owers of this MG brand name, I just asked if it was coming to a UK dealership soon!
SInce owning an old MG many years ago. Recently hired an SUV and all they had was an MG. Thought "Oh no" yet very suprised at the build quality, well done to SIAC on making some waves with the price on the MG4.
This ticks pretty much every box for me. A 200+ mile hatch at a ‘fair’ price… finally MG of all people figured out what most of us want. I predict they won’t be able to build these quick enough. And V2L too? whoop! bonus!!
MG is a Chinese company and they focus of stealing technology from everywhere and then assemble it in the cars.....whereas other companies have to develop or buy.
Warranty time Probably not the entertainment system aka Kia 3 yr wty on it's system. They want two grand for a replacement unit. Going to Autobarn for $1290 . Seems Autobarn are getting good steady flow of KIA customers.
First EV that i could afford, like the look of it even if the rear is a bit over styled. Really want to see a review as Kryton with the rest of the red dwarf crew in the car on a road trip.
I have got a mg ZS ev here in india and owned it for one month. I’m completely blown away by its practicality, build quality and speed. I feel like a kid playing quake 3 with a cheat code. The drive is smooth, fantastic , rewarding.. never having to pay for gas again is a privilege.
I still prefer you to Jack to review cars to be honest. You gave all necessary information with natural comedic timing and sense of humor. It is just about right to get my attention. Hope to see you more.
I want one! Although as we have just bought a house I suspect I may have to wait a bit... but the point is, this is the first really decent price on an electric vehicle that has all the features I want. So yes - I'd say that's a winner!
Love the red and orange colours. Disappointed in not having physical controls for HVAC and steering wheel buttons. Hopefully those that want them can get them. Nice video. Keep up the good work.
I got the LR brand new for less than the cost of this MG4. I'm still stunned I managed to get it for that much! And car buying sites are valuing my car at more than I paid for it, and I've done 10k miles now
@Bowie Not sure what you mean?? I've had 245 miles from mine and even on full it says 220 miles now and not 210. Much better than the Stelantis rubbish .
Enjoyed the review, top class reporting. Car looks very good. I had an MG ZS EV for 12 mths (17k miles) and now a Kia Soul 18mths (30K) miles both fantastic cars
It gets car of the decade from me just for being a hatchback. The only thing is it’s quite big. I hope they bring out a next size down version with similar styling.
@@bentp4891 I had a Zoe which was a similar size. Maybe slightly bigger than a Fiesta. The new one has way more range than the 80 miles I had in 2016. About 3 times more.
@@bentp4891 This really isn't much bigger than the latest Fiesta. Close to the dimensions of Golf mk7. I'm still not a huge fan of the roof spoiler design.
Yes it is kind of big, but that makes the price of it even more dramatically impressive. I don’t think Tesla investors realize how much competition they have, with Tesla being valued at more than $800 billion. Tesla model three is in the ballpark of 100% more expensive than this mg4.
Lovely. I wish we had all these options in the US. Great stuff! I hope to see us hit 300+ miles of range soon in cars that are $30k. Some of these cars are really doing a great job pushing the envelope and delivering top specs for real value.
That will sell like hotcakes. Is this the start of the reasonably affordable electric car? I think that in a couple of years 2nd hand, these will be as affordable to most folks as a petrol car
Totally agree, this could really shake up the new AND used market. Right now, if you're looking at EVs under £10k, you're still only gonna get a Nissan Leaf from 13 years ago with barely any range. This could really compete.
ehh i wouldn't go that far, "most folks" looking to buy a 3-5 year old ICE car of this genre are looking to spend well under 10k, I don't see this dropping anywhere near that low after 3 years unless a lot of other cheaper EVs come out in that timespan and it has to compete. Still, it does mark a big step toward EVs becoming affordable, just needs to drop another 10k rather than 20k like it needed to a couple of years ago :D
What a great report, Robert. Just a few years ago everyone laughed at the strange marriage between a dead once great British car company and a seemingly dodgy Chinese one yet here we are, not laughing anymore. This car looks spot on in so many ways, especially the price. Brilliant! Exciting!
It is great to see such a nice car at an affordable price for new car buyers. Also nice to have Robert present, more like the early days of Fully Charged.
Badge snobbery?!!.....This is by mindless sheep who know nothing about the brand and heritage......one of the only 3 foreign marque's to win the Mille Miglia, Le Mans, Speed Records......the lists goes on! Fabled racing drivers such as Stirling Moss, Earl howe, Capt Eyston, Donald Cambell, Tazio Nouvolari ect.........the likes of which VW and other brands (let alone KIA and Hyundai), could only dream about! Oh yes, and Chinese not British?.......in the same way that Jaguar land Rover is Indian and Rolls, Bentley and Mini are German and Vauxhall are French! And to sum it up, the world over is raving about its comparison to the Lamborghini Urus! A brilliant brilliant review by someone who takes the pure essence of a car, and distills it into what makes it great!👍
This review brought back memories. In the 70s we had an Allagro (deliberate spelling mistake) which really was horrible. We used to leave it with the keys in but nobody pinched it. We really like this car though. Robert Llewellyn used to present 'Scrap heap challenge' along with Dick Strawbridge 20 years ago.
Bobby LLew is a serial success story - Kryten in Red Dwarf, Scrapheap challenge, author (fiction and non-fiction) Carpool, and now the incredibly sucessful Fully Charged. The wishy washy lefty liberal man's pin-up boy ;-)
The SAIC MG is to the British Leyland MGB GT as the Mazda Miata was (and is) to all the MGs, Triumphs and Austin-Healeys of the 50s, 60s and 70s, an Oriental interpretation that works.
Just a small correction.... Next year will see a 77kWh Extended Range version plus the AWD Performance. The AWD model actually uses the same 64kWh battery as the Long Range model to save weight. MG UK are targeting a £35-£37k price tag for the Performance model....
I come to FullyCharged for the news and reviews, but mostly this guy is the jolliest person I watch on RUclips and coming here always makes me happy.. FullyCharged is like therapy to me. Also, this MG looks a lot like a Toyota, doesn't it.?
Great review. I've been watching you for years and glad to see we're becoming grumpy old men at about the same rate. The MG4 looks great and like something I'd be interested in if they offer it in the US.
MG have massively upped their game! I had a 2014 MG3 for 2 years, needed a new clutch at 40k miles and the doors leaked in the rain... Definitely felt cheap but other than the clutch it never let me down!
@@keithhobbs1 not yet. Waiting to hear from dealer. My understanding is that the demonstrators arrive soon and a small allocation of different models and colours will arrive with, or shortly after, them. If the car you want is within this criteria then maybe you'll get lucky and get one relatively soon. As the orders at the moment are of the refundable£99 type I guess some will test drive and order and get a more definite date. Some will drive and decide not to buy. Some, very lucky ones, will like and a car will be available.
Its rocketed to the top of my shortlist, I still think the interior of the ORA Cat is nicer but man value talks. I eagerly await its arrival in Australia next year,. ooh battery to load is a nice bonus.
@@tren133 with government incentives it will be under 40k, although I'll probably option the big battery. It's coming to Australia, they are testing it now. The Atto2 is a great city car, but I am concerned about it's hwy range, house prices mean my friends all live on the outskirts of the city these days in different directions. Plus longer batteries mean you can wait for a sunny day to charge.
@@waterloowar It is fully designed in the UK, that is more than alot of the cars on our roads. Even some of the engineering was done in the UK. The fact MG don't make cars in the UK anymore isn't a bad thing for the consumer 🤣
With respect, you've probably posted that on an electronic device full of Chinese components.... I'm not condoning what happens in China, but there's just as much sh*tf*ckery going on here and in other parts of the world.
I have two remarks on the design. *Remark 1* : Although it would probably impact the range quite a bit, I really think this car could use some spacers. Especially the wheels at the rear end. *Remark 2* : The black cladding on the sideskirts are there to make the vehicle look a bit lower than it actually is but it end up looking like a crossover. That should definitely be body colour as well.
Hi Robert, great review as usual, one thing, it's been said by others that it doesn't have a rear wiper, as you had the car on a nasty day what was the rear window like, did it like a lot of cars chuck a lot of dirt on the rear window or did those aerodynamic spoilers help in respect of that.?
This should have been MG UK but as usual we ruin everything we touch. I think you’re exactly right this is going to be very popular. Especially in today’s current economic climate they’ve released this to market with uncanny timing. I know a few people who are ditching or ditched their SUV’s for more smaller economical alternatives.
Unfortunately the government choose jobs over a good business plan. Imagine if they choose a group of business people instead of people of made unrealistic promises. Still it would also require a business person with a vision to get into the electric car market which didn't exist at that time.
If it was, it wouldn't look anything like this, be this price or be anything like as good. Have you ever owned a British car? From the 70s on, they were utter crap. Why d'you think they went out of business?
I've just handed a 28Kwh Ioniq back after three years and am temporarily back in a petrol car as I no longer have a company car. This is now top of my list for when I buy an electric car next year. Even the top spec Trophy is about £4k cheaper than the ID3.
Last week we went shopping for a small family car, two requirements were EV and a tow hitch for the small boat/tip runs. Visits to Renault, Fiat, Peugeot and Smart. Our MG4 arrives next week. No need to say more.
Great review as always, and a very interesting looking car! To all those complaining about China, put everything you own that is made in China or has Chinese components outside your front door. Then see if you can find something non-Chinese made to access the internet, open a browser and type a response when you are done. I expect your router will be in the pile of rejected technology, for a start- if not the router, then the power supply for it. I'm not saying it is right, but it is a fact that China has become the manufacturing hothouse of the world.
If (and it is a big if) China invaded Taiwan you would have great difficulty buying any of those things as most rely on Taiwanese made chips. It is the reason the U.S. Government is throwing money at Intel tying to regain U.S. manufacturing ability.
Don’t miss the irony. A product designed to lower emissions built in a country powered by coal. A country which has stepped back from its already half-hearted commitment to zero carbon simply because an American politician visited Taiwan. A car with a British badge built entirely in China. There is nothing to celebrate in this.
@@stevedriver1376 and what’s wrong with that? What’s wrong with Chinese investment? Designers and engineers are employed locally in UK. @@stevedriver1376 There's nothing wrong with state-owned as a concept. Not that long ago many commercial enterprises in the 'West' were owned by government and quite successfully too.
I learnt about the MG4 last week, and it’s safe to say my first EV will be from MG. Either the Trophy or the Performance. My HP payments on my 10yr old 1.6 diesel Touran end in June 2023, and I will be going electric even though I have no home charging, and nowhere to add a charger (live in a flat above a shop), I will top up at the Tesco across the road. Don’t forget that the MG although built in China, has been designed in Britain.
No longer the case, most of the British side of MG has gone. Now the elephant in the room - work out the cost of charging these things at typical motorway service station rates. Charging your vehicle often costs more than the equivalent miles in petrol - something you hear nothing about in the press.
@@LondonSteveLee Hey, market them here to the United States then. Electric rates are low here so even using an expensive charger for my car doesn't even scratch the cost of gasoline.
@@LondonSteveLee if paying more than 54p/kWh that is indeed the case- 5p per mile becomes about 15p per mile practically equivalent to Diesel economy . But subscription discounts from various charging network providers can help and a lot of new EVs come with a complementary charging card given discounted charging or in some cases free charging for a period of time! And there are still a number of free destination chargers around in the UK.
Nice car, great review! Great direction, just give EVs to the masses, without overly convoluted stuff and unnecessarily big battery packs. Thank you MG! Also for every interior designer and car maker: please, PLEASE ditch the piano black completely, or keep at least 10cm distance from anything you frequently touch! For me the design language is previous gen Toyota, e.g. the Mirai - quite a resemblance. The double back wing is also familiar from somewhere, maybe Civic type R or Jaguar - LandRover products.
Looks lovely. I’m very excited to see what else MG come up with in the next few years as I save my pennies. Of course I’ll consider everything that’s available when I’m ready, but there’s a little part of me that’s really hoping I’ll end up with an MG.

@Lookup2Wakeup Silly comment. My car (Kia Stonic) is slightly smaller than this one and its way bigger than my current needs. I would get an EV city car if it was available and priced similar to the Kia Stonic.
I would *love* to be able to buy a four door hatchback EV! But living here in the US, we are very limited in choice of this type of EV. And it has "normal" size wheels/tires.
Check out the Chevy Bolt. 2023 will be 26,500$ and has a range of 250 miles. I’m going to do my best to get one. My son has a 2019 and it’s really a good car.
The other thing is, yes I do have a 2002 Ford Truck. Sits around until I use it. Also have a 2011 Kia Soul (wife’s car) and the 2014 Fiat 500ev. Doesn’t have to be all or nothing. The EV is a delight to drive, and saves me a lot of money! Most expensive car I ever bought was the used to us Kia Soul at 17,000$ and, we kinda got taken and paid too much. I’m not rich, and take care of my finances. The truck was 4500$ and the Fiat was kind of 4000$ but since I traded 2 old motorcycles, I have about 2500$ into it, then the state of Oregon gave me 2500$ cash for owning an EV so I’m net 0 into it…
@@superinserra The EV6 is a great car, but it's on the larger side, and even at starting MSRP it's over $40,000. That's too expensive for the likes of me, and probably for most people who like the sound of the MG 4's price tag.
Such a nice car, and great choice of colours compared to the usual drab grey/white/black and maybe a dull red that most models seem to come in these days :) Sadly too small for a family of 4 who enjoy camping trips (if it could take roof bars, that would be another matter!), so a Niro it is. If the next MG5 is on the EV specific platform though, I think that's going to be a real gem.
My 2 year old MG 3 cylinder turbo is not a bad drive at all. But the foot well does fill up with water every time it rains. I imagine things have improved with these models. Not a bad thing from China at all.
V2G and V2H should be being taken more seriously. By tax incentive and other mechanisms. Private vehicles have the potential to constitute a significant portion of the national battery.
Well colour me impressed. Finally a car show that focuses on the actual cars rather than the overbearing personalities of the presenters. To put it another way, an intelligent and entertaining programmme that's not marred by "stupid stunts" dominating the screen (my lawyer helped with the wording of that!) Everything about the production of this channel is first class - video, audio, content, presentation, editing, etc. The on screen graphics are simple yet informative and the host is a genuinely likeable person who knows what he's talking about. This show should be on national or network TV across the world if it isn't already.
At last we're getting there, a useful EV that's more affordable. If they can make/import enough it will do well - so what's the expected import number going to be? Kind of reminds me of the BYD Atto 3, and again once they can import it at that price they will find buyers. Any news on rhd BYD Dolphin? Good job, Bobby.
SAIC (parent company) have said there will be 16 models on the MSP platform within 2 years - clearly not all of them will be sold in the UK but my local dealer confirmed smaller is on the way 😉
Straight after I watched this video I went to vacuum the car, a slightly fiddly job as we have to pass the cable through the kitchen window. Never mind the camping gear, I can see uses for V2L at home! Would be handy for lawn mowers too.
As soon as I saw my Local MG dealer posting about this, I knew it as going to be a good piece of kit, and it looks like MG have well and truly delivered. Look forward to seeing several of these on the roads.
Since sales taxes on cars vary around the world, it would be really helpful to confirm and list the price before VAT, for those of us doing currency conversions. 26k UK pounds before VAT is about 21.8k UK pounds I think. 19% VAT on cars in the UK, right?

At last...! An EV that is realistically priced (in comparison), functional, and looks OK. Not to mention a prestigious badge... Will the "Baby Tesla" be able to compete...?
Baby Tesla is a very low priority for Elon. He may surprise us, but I don't expect to see a smaller model in production until 2024-2025 or later. The supply of battery materials cannot meet demand for Models 3 and Y, Cybertruck and Semis, all highly profitable. That's not even considering the burgeoning demand for Tesla's stationary storage products. Even if the small Tesla had a projected 40% gross margin, it would still be a low priority. That's an unfortunate circumstance for many reasons, but it is reality. I hope SAIC, and many other companies, are successful in filling this void in the Tesla lineup.
@@daveriley6310 I'm happy for tesla to deal with mid to high end, trucks, haulage etc and hit the smaller car market later, thats already being dealt with by MG, BYD etc
@@DavidKnowles0 They still not made the Cybertruck and Roadster production ready, and for ''Baby Tesla'' there is no concept yet. - also, it might sound weirs, but ramping up production for a small and cheap car, is harder than for an expensive one, where you have more margins.
I like your videos very much, especially when not talking about if trimming is nice or not. Just the basics. Things that you might discuss are things like what kind of battery types are used (Lifepo4,...) also how much warranty (for example on the batteries), more on the V2L how much wattage. If cars are permanently connected to the internet (which I think are scary)
It wasn't that long ago were watching "Who killed the Electric Car"...and now look at us, all happy and over the nasty internal combustion stuff. Just...Brilliant! Thank you for this great review.
Beautiful camera work. I really enjoy watching this channel. Did find this review lacking in detail. No comment on the long range model, the different charging speeds on different models, etc. Felt like the prep work was either rushed or lazy.
Great stuff! Looking forward to the day we get more EVs in Australia. Still a lot of anti-EV attitudes here and misinformation, in the community and in parliaments!!
The only resistance here in Australia I perceive is the Tory/Conservative Coalition Party which is now out of office since May 2022. I feel that many Australians are very interested indeed as I am in electric vehicles. The new government here is rapidly changing the legislation to encourage EVs and renewable energy unlike the previous mob who actually resisted/blocked/railed against renewables and in fact those still remaining in parliament still have this troglodyte attitude. This was to the embarrassment of most Australians. How we voted them in in the first place and then continued to vote them in is a mystery of the Universe. And this MG looks great.
An entirely svelt review! Lovely job - thanks. Much more engaging than other YT reviews of this vehicle. Competitively priced, compared with familiar EV makes, but probably at the princely end of the spectrum when BYD, Great Wall models are considered. Has anyone said when we can expect the MG 4 to actually reach customers in the UK? Somewhere at the back of what's left of my mind is an idea for a game based on when we can actually drive the EV we see in the many, many adverts on social media and elsewhere. Possible titles include, Chinese Whispers, Putin's Truth and Boris Has a Breakdown.
Truly brilliant! Hope they are charging ENOUGH for the car so that they can support it through its initial roll out phases. Also, concern about the back hatch being integrated with the bumper, which may yield higher than acceptable costs in 5-mph rear end collisions (but they aren't sending these to the USA). Congrats! It's a winner!
Nice! I'll keep an eye out for a bit longer (my bank account tells me I'm not yet quite in the market for this one!), but I VERY much like the look and sound of MG4 here! (...even if the back is... a little odd?) If they managed to make one that was slightly smaller still, but with a similar range, that would suit me even better.
It's great that they're now producing more affordable EV cars and this is exactly the type of thing I'm looking for. It's a shame the rear end is so ugly but I'm sure they'll sort that out in future. Well done MG for giving other manufacturers a wake up call and increasing competition!
A bit sad that the only British part on that car is the MG logo. Chinese are doing very if it sells for such a reasonable price after being made in China or Thailand, transport and import fees.
If I won one of those lotteries I don't play, the only thing that would stop me is if they released a big boot estate variant (would like something smaller than the 5).
When you said it was rear wheel drive, I was thinking, "But how does it go around corners"? But thankfully you cleared things up immediately by telling us that it was FRONT WHEEL STEER.... Thanks for that lol 😂😂😂😂
I really, really love the Ioniq 5 and it's my dream ev, but the MG4 EV might be the best alternative for that car. Would love to see it come to Indonesia.
When are car manufacturers going to realise that fitting distracting (and often confusing) screens, is a really bad thing to do, when we are trying so hard to clear the NHS waiting list? I"d prefer it if all these complex controls were only accessible when a car is stationary.
Maybe. I'd have though a short vertical driveshaft down to the front axle would be the easiest thing ever in a fixed-gear EV, but I am not any kind of engineer.
Sadly, it's certainly not the bargain of the century. I've just cancelled my order after inspecting the car and having a test drive. The reason? The poor quality of the seat trim really let the car down. The fabric of the side bolsters on the bases of both front seats was quite badly creased, making the seat look 2 or 3 years old rather than brand new. This shoddy quality would be unacceptable at any price. The backrests and the rear seat were also affected, but less badly. The other MG4 models with fabric seats were similarly flawed. but the Trophy model wasn't. However the Trophy has those fake leather sets which remind me of some of the horrible vinyl upholstery from the 1960s. A shame because the car drives quite nicely, but I'm sure those seats would only look worse with use. So it's not the car for me.
By far one of my favourite cars at the moment in the world of electric amazing price great styling good range what more do you want I always found the mg’s to be boring but not this well done
And sufficient base load power to charge them....but I'm sure that puffs of wind and glimpses of sunlight through the clouds and fog will be just fine.
@@carrisasteveinnes1596 oh dear! You are aware of smart charging, EV tariffs, V2G, storage etc. stay paying ridiculous amounts for fossil dinosaur juice then. I’ll stick with 2p per mile in an EV.
I am happy to see Robert doing the review, miss the old fully charged (with the intro with the gray background, where the thing pops from the battery), would like to see the old bloke as a presenter more often
Ordered an MG4 trophy in white today, telling me will be delivered before Christmas, cancelled an order for the new Ford focus, test drive, brilliant, fast enough, interior quality, good enough, I am told it’s basically an ID3 underneath as the same factory builds and supplies the parts for the VW ID3, the trophy comes with all the goodies that are optional extras on other cars and undercuts on price.
I think the most impressive part of the entry model is how it is the first car to truly be price competitive with ICE cars. It is cheaper than an entry level 1.5 Golf. It's not far off the price of a base Vauxhall Astra. You get far more base tech, all that without considering the electrification.
A seminal moment!
And it does not need almost any maintenance, not now not after 5000Km or 500,000Km.
@Zanda Bayfield if it has a LFP battery it would last easily 500,000 km...
@Zanda Bayfield Doubtful. It has a thermal management system, so the battery will probably last as long as the car does (if not longer).
@@christalbot210 everybody knows a battery needs replacing after 3 years 🤣 (sarcasm, obvs)
No one does car reviews like Robert. He has been the best from the beginning. Hopefully MG will be available in America sometime. All the best.
Bit poor you have to do it but the trade off seems worth it
Do you still love it?

@@RandallSlick true. But it's a nice bonus 🤷🏿♂️
@@MelioraCogito Cost of production and those precious shareholder dividends it seems. Engineers haven't had much say in things for a very long time.
This is what the people want! Simple, reasonable, affordable and ELECTRIC
It sure ain't my grandpa's MG.
Combustion motors are better and cheaper.
AND...the 'fixed' battery means that this EV will have, essentially, ZERO resale value making it a 'disposable' vehicle. EV maker NIO avoids this with their battery swap technology.
Any EV that does not have 'battery swap' tech = FAIL...regardless of 'price'.
@rigamortice do you know how much cobalt is used to clean a litre of combustion fuel?

I have too many issues with pain and noise sensitivity etc to buy anything I haven’t test driven.
Actually I just reread your comment and I’m pretty sure you were talking to the other guy but I’ve already typed it all out so meh, I’ll leave it 😂
@@moniquem783I’ve heard from Australian reviewers that this is an Australian distributor issue and that BYD unfortunately worked with a less than reputable company.
New Zealand has been having no issues with customer service and such.
@@bobbelcher678 that’s good to know. Hopefully they sort something else out soon because I do think they have huge potential here.
I'd love to see an even smaller version of this a proper city car.
dacia spring
@Lookup2Wakeup Silly comment. My car (Kia Stonic) is slightly smaller than this one and its way bigger than my current needs. I would get an EV city car if it was available and priced similar to the Kia Stonic.
Smart EV?
Ora Cat or BYD Dolphin, maybe?
@@Darx97 maybe spring?
I would *love* to be able to buy a four door hatchback EV! But living here in the US, we are very limited in choice of this type of EV. And it has "normal" size wheels/tires.
@Michael Headley Yes, some people do - and others of us like cars like this one.
Check out the Chevy Bolt. 2023 will be 26,500$ and has a range of 250 miles. I’m going to do my best to get one. My son has a 2019 and it’s really a good car.
Then you don't know about the Kia EV6, and others, the problem now are dealerships, charging so much more above the MSRP. Dealerships suck.
Wet day, good opportunity to see if the lack of a rear windscreen wiper makes any difference?
Such a nice car, and great choice of colours compared to the usual drab grey/white/black and maybe a dull red that most models seem to come in these days :) Sadly too small for a family of 4 who enjoy camping trips (if it could take roof bars, that would be another matter!), so a Niro it is. If the next MG5 is on the EV specific platform though, I think that's going to be a real gem.
My 2 year old MG 3 cylinder turbo is not a bad drive at all. But the foot well does fill up with water every time it rains. I imagine things have improved with these models. Not a bad thing from China at all.
It's so frustrating that every EV I want isn't available in the USA
At least you get the Mustang Mach E, Australia doesn’t.😔
Love your informative and fun shows. I appreciate you and your crew very much! Peace
We appreciate you too Randy!
V2G and V2H should be being taken more seriously. By tax incentive and other mechanisms. Private vehicles have the potential to constitute a significant portion of the national battery.
This is incredibly important yet few understand how it works.
Will this be possible with the MG4? I've only heard of V2L, meaning you can just plug in one simple device, but can't power your whole house this way?
Well colour me impressed.
Finally a car show that focuses on the actual cars rather than the overbearing personalities of the presenters.
To put it another way, an intelligent and entertaining programmme that's not marred by "stupid stunts" dominating the screen (my lawyer helped with the wording of that!)
Everything about the production of this channel is first class - video, audio, content, presentation, editing, etc.
The on screen graphics are simple yet informative and the host is a genuinely likeable person who knows what he's talking about.
This show should be on national or network TV across the world if it isn't already.
A great review, the car seems to address most reservations. hopefully the aggressive pricing is sustainable
1000 by the end of the month, another 1000 by Xmas.
BYD has a 800k-order backlog now.
I like it! A bit too big for my needs, though - perhaps there can be an MG2 or MG1 in the future? :)
Yes please!!
SAIC (parent company) have said there will be 16 models on the MSP platform within 2 years - clearly not all of them will be sold in the UK but my local dealer confirmed smaller is on the way 😉
I have heard hints that an MG3 sized E hatch is on the way 2023
Too big? Just get an e-scooter.
@@richiesworld1 What an incredibly useful, thought-out, and valuable comment. Everyone's lives have been enriched from reading it.
Straight after I watched this video I went to vacuum the car, a slightly fiddly job as we have to pass the cable through the kitchen window. Never mind the camping gear, I can see uses for V2L at home! Would be handy for lawn mowers too.
I have an allotment. The possibilities are immense.
@@PassportToPimlico Now you're talking! It's not just Bobby - I've seen other presenters reach for camping gear but there's plenty more.
20% vat on cars in the uk.
@@andrewgaunt5654 Ah, there you go. All the more so then. Since people all around the world watch this channel, I think it's best to talk about pre-VAT pricing (and say you're doing that) to have the closest thing to an apples-to-apples comparison.
@@andrewgaunt5654 But may be deceasing after this Friday's budge it.
The first car since the heavily discounted Zoe ZE40 (I bought one for £17.8 k Inc battery and £4.5k grant in 2017) that looks like good value and the MG is a good looking thing too
Same here. I bought my Zoe ZE40 end of 2018 for just over 18K with battery (after incentives). Might have just found Zoe's replacement in the long range MG4.
@@martinconlon2673 I sold mine after three years and bought a cheaper Mercedes SLK, I am a total sinner I almost bought an E208 but so expensive for what it is and I love convertibles. The Mégane E-Tech may turn out to be decent value used in a few years too
@@daveriley6310 By that time he may well be fighting a very very uphill battle in the UK, against MG, an no one would have said that 2 years ago.
Just trying to remember the last rear wheel car I owned - I think it was the Alfa Romeo GTV Veloce. Probably had about the same range as well!
I agree.. shame really.
7:00 "It doesn't leak."
Ok, are we *absolutely* sure that it's an MG?
My 8 year old MG6 Turbo doesn't leak... Yet 🤣
This guy is a great reviewer. Pleasure to listen to.
(...even if the back is... a little odd?)
If they managed to make one that was slightly smaller still, but with a similar range, that would suit me even better.
It's great that they're now producing more affordable EV cars and this is exactly the type of thing I'm looking for. It's a shame the rear end is so ugly but I'm sure they'll sort that out in future. Well done MG for giving other manufacturers a wake up call and increasing competition!
You don't see it from the inside
Great presentation!! However what gives with no center arm rests?
A bit sad that the only British part on that car is the MG logo. Chinese are doing very if it sells for such a reasonable price after being made in China or Thailand, transport and import fees.
I don't think it was mentioned, but I guess this comes with MG's standard 7 year warranty?
Yes. Warranty is not car specific. It's brand specific, all of MG's car have 7 year warranty.
This is ace. If they manage to get it into australia at a decent price I’m in… (some hope 🙄)
The Driven says that you get it in the first half of next year 👍
LFP battery for the SE :) ......25 k unless something amazing comes out in the next 3/4 years this will be my next car
Heck no, wayyyyy too expensive.
If I won one of those lotteries I don't play, the only thing that would stop me is if they released a big boot estate variant (would like something smaller than the 5).
@@starlinguk my new yaris was 22k so not really much difference
When you said it was rear wheel drive, I was thinking, "But how does it go around corners"? But thankfully you cleared things up immediately by telling us that it was FRONT WHEEL STEER.... Thanks for that lol 😂😂😂😂
So you’ve never heard of rear wheel drive before or you thought the likes of BMW steer with their rear wheels? 🤦♂️
@@Sto79Be My comment was tongue in cheek humour... you just failed to see it for what it was... nvm lol
I really, really love the Ioniq 5 and it's my dream ev, but the MG4 EV might be the best alternative for that car. Would love to see it come to Indonesia.
Thanks for the great episode. Was missing your reviews Bobby, no one would be as excited about a compact sensible hatchback as you.
Oh, I think Jack's good at these sort of reviews too.
When are car manufacturers going to realise that fitting distracting (and often confusing) screens, is a really bad thing to do, when we are trying so hard to clear the NHS waiting list?
I"d prefer it if all these complex controls were only accessible when a car is stationary.
It's interesting that it's rear wheel drive. I would imagine that rear wheel drive is mechanically simpler particularly in an EV.
Rear wheel drive can use a ridged axle if you want. No need for CV joints
This is really going to shake up the market in the U.K. & elsewhere. I’m just hope they can keep up with demand!
Nice to see a car tried in traditional British weather.
What a brilliant review. Can't wait to get these in New Zealand. Also can't wait for Fully Charged in Sydney, Australia!
