Thanks, Roland, for an informative review. However, my first new car was a 5-door Renault 5 in 1989, and I think you would have found getting in the back of that a challenge! It was a small car (which is why I bought it) and was never intended for gentlemen of your stature! Also, my R5 did not have any extra space under the bonnet (it also opened hinged at the back) so the similarities with new car are more. I currently have a Renault Clio, and the electric R5 is very close to that in many ways, which I appreciate. My next car is looking like it will be an electric R5, but hopefully cheaper and with a smaller battery. My first car (a Ford Cortina Estate Mk 1) had a 'massive' range of 240 miles! Not many people remember driving with a range of under 250 miles. My Clio can do about 450 miles per tank. But to enable me go electric, and have the huge cost saving, it is not a problem. I can't refill my petrol tank at home whilst sleeping. Odd that! Weight comparison: My 2008 Clio (1.6 litre, 5-door) is nearly 1,200kg, so only 300kg less than the EV. Good review ….as others have mentioned, the battery chemistry should always be included. On a reduced range city car, knowing whether to charge to 100 or 80% every day is important.
Don't charge your car *daily* to 100%, that's not good for the battery. Only if you're driving the full range on a daily basis. Which for most people isn't the case, as a 50km/35mi is the daily average driving distance. Only LPF batteries need to be charged to 100% once a while (every other week) to remind them of their total capacity. Batteries are the happiest closest to 50%. According to your daily needs, charge and run closest to that percentage (70-30 or 80-20, for example). Btw. The 40kWh is an LFP pack. The 52kWh is an NMC pack. Both chemistry's have their advantages.
To add to David's response, check out @EngineeringExplained video from a month or so ago, "How to ruin your electric car's battery - LFP Edition". Leaving aside the algorithm-optimized title, it goes over the latest research on LFP longevity, and concludes that the lithium mantra of "cycle shallow, round the middle" is still relevant. It is more tolerant to sitting at 100% than other chemistries (due to lower voltage), but it's still not the healthiest there. But unlike other chemistries, they need the periodic top-off to recalibrate state-of-charge estimation, and manufacturers don't want to bother explaining that, and will trade the longer cycle life for simpler documentation (plus, it has been a myth even in the industry that "LFP don't care")

Wonderful overview. A bit of Dutch flair and a more realistic reference of space in an EV for Dutchmen. Even if the Renault 5 2024 decides to bring put a cheaper 42 kwh 84 hp model in the 20-25000 euro bracket, I think the Imster has better value. I had a mk II Renault 5 back in the 90s. It was a 1986, 956cc three door. It didn't like starting on cold mornings, the parts were three times the price of those of a fiesta. On the plus side, it was nippy, easy to drive, had plenty of visibility and a decent size boot.

I've been excited by this since the concept and then seeing it at Everything Electric just confirmed I would love one! It has a cool but cute look and its actually small and not trying to look like an SUV! Also pretty decent price in the current market.
My wife bought the same-coloured rust bucket Renault 5 back in the day. We loved it & continually patched it up. It was the runaround for shopping & taking the kids on football trips. I ❤️ you & Jack in these types of cars, equally broad but not as tall as you, 14 cm shy, but what's a few inches these days? It more than helps for comparison purposes. It's a great nostalgic review.

The comparison with the old Renault 5 was cute and inevitable, but I would have liked some comparison with the Zoe that was discontinued in favor of this.
My mother had one, and liked it a lot. just had a rattle that we could never get rid of. Though the one year dad went to do the annual service, and asked when last she filled the tank, because it was low. She replied he filled the tank last, a year before. It drove 6km a week......
Nice review and I'm glad to hear all the stats giving us the information we need which really has been lacking in old reviews. I like this guy reviewing and would love to see more from him.

Great review and loved the Roland Test..I reckon it beats the Jack test! This was a wonderful review of the Renault 5 and loved that you compared to an an original. My wife had a Renault 5 in the 1990's and loved it. She is 5'1" so a perfect size for her. However can we please stop referring to smaller cars as City cars. Yes to the ones that can't reach 50-60 MPH, but all these new smaller cars are full cars and capable of long journies and travelling at the speed of the road. City car indicates it is very limited and should only use it for short trips.

What is this trend for car reviewers being giants and complaining they don't fit in the back seats?? I honestly think it's one of the reasons cars are getting so big. I am 2m tall, and could count on the fingers of one hand how often in the last year I've been in the back seats in a car - almost always short trips. If I'm travelling with other people, the tall person is in the front seat and everyone is more comfortable - the back seats should be designed for smaller people (maybe 80 or 60 percentile), then the car can be smaller, more efficient, better for everyone.
My kids aren't old enough to drive yet but are already taller than me, so they would be cramped in the back of this. Electric cars should be Packaged better. I love thenew R5 but can't help feeling it would have more room if it were a little less.. retro
Yeah, it couldn't be the need for big battery to get the range, or the safety features that make vehicles heavy, or the bigger brakes to slow all that weight down that increase the size of the rims, or the family needing better access to the baby in the baby seat (seats which also get larger by the year). Nah, the thing that car companies listen to, it's big presents complaining about the rear legroom. 😋
Any news when it will be in the UK? This will blow away the competition. It attracts so much interest because of its its looks ,and the thought gone into its whole package. Bravo!
My first car was the Renault R5, I loved it! It was a 1976 model I picked up used in 1978. Sadly Renaults are no longer for sale in Canada. Now I drive a Smart Fortwo. :)
I love that Renault has built on it's iconic cars, rather than gone all out whacky like some other manus. This is a very attractive car for sure - with so much of the atmosphere and style of the original :-)
A good little car overall, but aesthetically those square dlr lights just look odd at the front for me. Surely a retro 5 turbo to follow could be interesting.
Nice to have you on the show Roland. 🙂 At 204cm, I'm not surprised you got into the car off camera. 🙃 For the record, I like saying froot and boot. 😄 Or B1 and B2 (ie primary boot and secondary boot. This one also satisfies the child part of me that still loves Bananas In Pyjamas). 😁
The sad thing about watching a UK EV car show is watching them get so many presents while we Americans suffer with the manufacturers telling us we want big and expensive
“Wrong car” brilliant, I like the new guy. All we need now is a picture of Roland and Jack standing with Imogen in the middle 😂 Oh sorry great review 😊
I love the accent and the presenter. I was not a fan of the opening sentence’s hype but the rest of the review was informative and enjoyable. It is great to see the Renault building an appealing car. It looks great for the size.
Love the review, Love the looks of the car. However £25k starting price for the cheapest and over £30k for this model is expensive. MG4 can be picked up for under £20k and the top of the range 77kWh MG4 Trophy, which goes a fair bit further, is faster and more spacious, for just over £25k so it's going to need to come down in price fast to be a serious competitor in the small family hatchback segment.
the R5 has full bidirectional charging ability at 11KW back to grid/house..... but it too expensive and it will suffer the same fate as the Fiat 500e... Dave Takes it on gives a better view of the EU legacy mess...
I was excited when hearing about the new R5 and how it was going to be cheaper or at least reasonably affordable as my Zoe was not cheap! However, it looks like it’ll be around the same price as the Zoe like for like with the obvious advantage of having more modern tech but the Zoe could have been had for close to £10k discounts near the end of its run. The Alpine a290 would be interesting except that it’ll be at least £10k more than this current top spec R5😢
@@choshun8 it's a nice looking small car but the price would put me off. I'd expect it to be close to £20k in the not too distant future otherwise they won't sell many. Lots of cheaper competition and some fantastic secondhand bargains out there.
Thanks for using the metric system, instantly my favourite presenter. If the editor would also add the metric numbers on screen, that would be fantastic.
Welcome back Roland, you've been missed hugely!! I would love to see you on the channel ALOT more and even replace another host who's voice I cannot stand like fingernails on a chalkboard. Hope they bring you with the team to Sydney or Melbourne next year for one or the other Electrify Everything(FCL) events. I don't understand why everyone compares this to the 1st generation Renault 5, to my eyes it looks a lot more like the 2nd generation. I had a 1990/91 (UK H reg) Renault 5 GT Turbo, the last model revision (which didn't have the air intake on the bonnet), and apart from the air intake this Renault 5 electric looks a lot like my 5 GT Turbo.
Back in the late 70s when I still lived in England I had a Renault 5, the 950cc model with the gear- lever protruding through the dashboard. I loved that little car. It was practical. It held the road as well as a limpet sticks to a rock and only got rid of it when the English weather finally killed it by rusting it the both inside and out. 😭 I now live in Australia so I don’t suppose I’ll see a new EV version of the R5 but I hope this little car is a success.
Like this guy, his fresh approach to reviewing is a revelation! Love the car, Renault are building their reputation for cleverly designed EV’s at all price points. 😎
If we're talking 1980's cars, I am in team Renault 4, not 5. I loved it's quirkiness -- especially the gear stick that came out of the dashboard. When my daughter was born in the 80's her mum had one, and so did the midwife; and seeing the midwife's red R4 parked under a cherry tree covered in cherry blossom is just one of the happy memories from the day my was born, but definitely deepened my loyalty to team R4. But that doesn't mean i can't appreciate this eV on its own merits as a 21st C car
The car looks fantastic. Saw it in a dealership. Iconic model with the Harman Kardon speakers and mobile charger (yes, it's an option!) you get a price roughly at 39K EUR. 35K with the French eco bonus. One has to wait for the seriously stripped down versions to get a reasonably valued car.
I owned one of the early 5s and it always brought a smile. Except maybe when I was driving on hilly roads or had the family along. It was underpowered. I wonder how the lovely new electric version does?
9:40 Zoe's Chameleon charger was reused motor power electronics in order to AC charge up to 43kW. It was great idea. Problem was safety - battery was not galvanically isolated from the grid, and in case there was a fault inside the car, it could kill you. Also, it insisted for the car to have good grounding before it would even allow charging, so many Zoe owner have issue with 'charging impossible' error. This model has separate onboard charger from the motor, but there is less capacity because it is added component.
This new presenter is great, keep him!

That's a great looking decent range EV. Seems to have excellent road handling too which is a plus.
Yay, I finally found a 21th century car that I want!
Not getting rid of any of my 80s BMWs, but this seems to be a great modern daily for when the weather get's a bit nasty for the classics :D
I've been excited by this since the concept and then seeing it at Everything Electric just confirmed I would love one! It has a cool but cute look and its actually small and not trying to look like an SUV! Also pretty decent price in the current market.
Heuu!! Huge Car Guy!! Gefeliciteerd met deze baan/klus bij Fully Charged, goed bezig!! 👍
Dankjewel man!
OK. Can we have Roland and Jack in the next review please? 🙏
Why are car review guys getting bigger and bigger? 😂😂 2.04 meters 🤣
I want to see 4 2m lads sit in the Inster and have them explain why it's not painted blue and is a box with a light on it and a telephone lol
@@gamertrojan4038 Perhaps one of them could casually be holding a copy of a famous book by some random fella called: H.G. Wells 😆
Put both of them in the back seat with Imogen in the middle.
@@drunkenhobo8020 Only if it's a five seater 😜
My wife bought the same-coloured rust bucket Renault 5 back in the day. We loved it & continually patched it up. It was the runaround for shopping & taking the kids on football trips. I ❤️ you & Jack in these types of cars, equally broad but not as tall as you, 14 cm shy, but what's a few inches these days? It more than helps for comparison purposes. It's a great nostalgic review.
Glad we could make that memory come back a little today ;-)
10:40 there are already energy suppliers that are offering, or will offer V2G specific tariffs: for example for France there is the Renault offshoot Mobilize, and for Germany there is eyond by The Mobility House
And in the UK I think Octopus
Beautiful little car. I’d get one if I didn’t need a bigger car. Got the electric Megane and it’s brilliant.
Great review, and presenter. Look forward to seeing this in Australia.. hopefully!!!
Nice one. More small, cheaper EV runabouts. Thanks for the video. 👍
Love the new presenter, great job on him.
Personally i drive a I10 2024 edition, i'm just waiting for the R5 to come and also when i get a house i will able to get a EV. I don't have a charger near me at all.
Thank you and good luck with that next step.
Great video, and Roland did a great job as well! Love the car too - would probably be a great and stylish second car in that cheaper configuration.
Thank you, I do agree it's a good addition to a bigger family car for shorter trips etc.
Any concerns I had about fitting into the R5 have been dispelled! An excellent review and reviewer. 👍🏻
Nice review and I'm glad to hear all the stats giving us the information we need which really has been lacking in old reviews. I like this guy reviewing and would love to see more from him.
Nicely done. A few more of the usual stats would be useful (charging speed etc).
We did record it, but probably ended up in a take in which I stumbled upon my English pronunciation. Will do better next time ;-)
My own nostalgia is with the Renault 19, which was our first family car when I was a kid. I'd love to see the look on my fathers face when I'd come visit him in a new, elecrical version of the Renault 19. Needs to go 600km though.
Thanks for your feedback. I meant it as an alternative to 'small' or 'tiny', so no disqualification of its abilities to go for longer trips.
That back and forth between the old and the new Renault 5 was very, very well done. Chapeau!
Dag Roland, heb je een samenwerkingsverband geregeld met the Fully Charged Show? Jack test....
Hulde aan Huge and Jacked men!
@@RolandTamelingHUGECarGuyJe Engels is echt super, een beetje een accent maar dat geeft helemaal niets
I had such a laugh at 0:30. The car has shrunk next to Roland. Roland is a great addition to the team btw, loved the presentation.
Thank you David.
Nice review! Thank you for using the metric system for us in the rest of the world. Please keep doing it.
Thanks. Easier for me as we're used to it, but we'll do our best to tell both as much as possible.
We bought a '24 E-Twingo this year, 18K new. It's so much fun. I really need to test drive the 5.
Current Twingo is very nice as well.
It's a rare condition of you aging, and others having children who are taller.
Not really, if Hyundai managed with a smaller vehicle, why can't Renault?
My kids aren't old enough to drive yet but are already taller than me, so they would be cramped in the back of this. Electric cars should be
Packaged better.
@@TheSpudlyMcgudly The car would have more room is it were bigger or it sacrificed boot space. You literally can't have it all.
Any news when it will be in the UK?
This will blow away the competition. It attracts so much interest because of its its looks ,and the thought gone into its whole package. Bravo!
Deliveries will start Q1 of 2025 in the UK. First ones are on the road in Europe already.
My first car was the Renault R5, I loved it! It was a 1976 model I picked up used in 1978. Sadly Renaults are no longer for sale in Canada. Now I drive a Smart Fortwo. :)
Great host, hope this little car comes to Aussie
Good job, Roland
I love that Renault has built on it's iconic cars, rather than gone all out whacky like some other manus. This is a very attractive car for sure - with so much of the atmosphere and style of the original :-)
We have a winner here. Good job, Renault!
Great video for a really nice looking EV! Unfortunately for those of us in the US we’ll never see it. 😢
we will in 25 years
A Great Review by a Great Man. The Renault 5 deserves great success!
A good little car overall, but aesthetically those square dlr lights just look odd at the front for me. Surely a retro 5 turbo to follow could be interesting.
That’s a familiar face! Welcome Roland! Succes kerel!
Thanks Jort!
Welcome Roland!
Nice to have you on the show Roland. 🙂 At 204cm, I'm not surprised you got into the car off camera. 🙃
For the record, I like saying froot and boot. 😄
Or B1 and B2 (ie primary boot and secondary boot. This one also satisfies the child part of me that still loves Bananas In Pyjamas). 😁
Love it. Thanks, I'll keep it in mind for next time.
The sad thing about watching a UK EV car show is watching them get so many presents while we Americans suffer with the manufacturers telling us we want big and expensive
“Wrong car” brilliant, I like the new guy.
All we need now is a picture of Roland and Jack standing with Imogen in the middle 😂
Oh sorry great review 😊
As a fellow Tree - I very much appreciate both the Jack test and the new Rolland test. Please make these staples for all of the future reviews.
Love the 'Tree'. 😁 I'll do my best next time.
I was looking at MG's until I found they are at the very bottom of the reliability charts, the lowest of all EVs; no surprise of their lower prices.
Hopefully price comes down with the competition from China. I like the 5 because of the V2G but the chargers are going to be expensive ~£6k
@@choshun8 it's a nice looking small car but the price would put me off. I'd expect it to be close to £20k in the not too distant future otherwise they won't sell many. Lots of cheaper competition and some fantastic secondhand bargains out there.
Roland is a great, easy to watch and very informative.
That's very kind of you. Thank you ;-) Please do spread the word.
Now imagine if they made a new r5 like the old one, a simple car with a reliable little ic engine but modernised but sold cheap
ok but can you imagine an electric motor inside that old R5 frame?
The dream.
Thought it seemed a bit lacklustre... then he said £25k!!!!
For that price this car is a steal, lets hope they sell loads.
Thanks for using the metric system, instantly my favourite presenter.
If the editor would also add the metric numbers on screen, that would be fantastic.
Good feedback, thanks.
3:35 Goliath stuffed into Davids Suzuki Swift chariot😂😂😂
😅
Welcome back Roland, you've been missed hugely!! I would love to see you on the channel ALOT more and even replace another host who's voice I cannot stand like fingernails on a chalkboard. Hope they bring you with the team to Sydney or Melbourne next year for one or the other Electrify Everything(FCL) events. Being a big guy myself really love your reviews shows me what cars are best suited for those of on the vertically enhanced department. :)
I now live in Australia so I don’t suppose I’ll see a new EV version of the R5 but I hope this little car is a success.
Like this guy, his fresh approach to reviewing is a revelation! Love the car, Renault are building their reputation for cleverly designed EV’s at all price points. 😎
Well done Roland...
Thank you!
I don't know who this guy thinks he is but... he's good! You should keep him!
Haha, lovely. Thank you!
I owned one of the early 5s and it always brought a smile. Except maybe when I was driving on hilly roads or had the family along. It was underpowered. I wonder how the lovely new electric version does?
Certainly one of the best car designs in decades. A car you just want to achive. So fresh in a world of chunky SUVs and Cross-overs.
Thank you Roland, very useful! It’s on my list.
My pleasure, enjoy!

Zoe's Chameleon charger was reused motor power electronics in order to AC charge up to 43kW.
Leuke review Roland, hoop je vaker te zien hier!
Dat is wel de bedoeling, dankjewel voor je vriendelijke reactie.
Great review and great new reviewer!!
Thank you, Michael!
