I wouldn't trust a Chinese car, especially an electric car. The build quality, battery fires, and anyone who knows anything about today's China will know what I mean.
Hit a 4” deep pothole like we suffer on any of our rural roads around where I live and I can just wince at the thought of the wheel in the hole left spinning in air as the bottom of the battery graunches along the road …. Just before the whole thing tips over. It was very noticeable how the car was driven by weaving all over the width of the roads to avoid speed bumps and relatively minor potholes. I like the idea in principle, but it looks like a total death trap if driven on roads shared with vans, trucks and buses.
Seeing it pass by Nissan Micras and Fiat 500s makes you realise that even "small cars" just aren't that small any more. This thing is a great entry in the market. Good luck to them.
Without wanting to take away what the Dogood is offering there are currently two Smart ForTwo ED (451's) on Auto Trader for under £6k. Sure you can't do the illegal stuff like skip through bollards but you can do 70mph and have a range of around 70 miles. They are a hoot to drive and perfect for the city.
I'm not even sure if driving through the bollards is illegal. There's no signage indicating that you can't drive through there, it's just that most cars (even back in the 70s when these bollards were installed) would not be physically able to fit through.
That Smart ForTwo is ten years old. Apples to oranges. They're £16,420 new, and everyone knows that you take a hit once you drive out of a showroom, especially since its ten-year-old battery would cost another £6k to replace if it's near dead. You could buy another Dogood for that, or replace the battery in your old one since it would be a third of the cost since it's less than a third the capacity at 4.8Kw as opposed to 17.6Kw in the Smart ForTwo. Obviously used cars are better value, and you'd probably be lucky to get £1k for a ten year Dogood if they existed.
@@joe-s5rI disagree, both are small city cars for £6k so apples to apples in my book, one vehicle is a fulley fledged car from an established manufacturer, the other is a rebadged Chinese microcar. As for needing a replacement battery please stop talking bollocks, when I was driving a Smart ForTwo ED it was 8 years old and returning better than book range. My current EV is even older (13 years old) and it also returns book range.
@@turbokadett You can't seem to comprehend that there's a difference between new and used. Those cars were £16,420 new. You'd pay up to £250k for a new Merc Maybach, but you can pick up a ten year old roller for under £39k. The RR badge has more cachée, and there's more legroom for you and your chauffeur. And you will probably be able to pick up a ten year old Doggod in future for £1k. That's heaps cheaper than the latest showroom price of a Smart Fortwo of £22,225. That's over 22 times the price for a smrt since we are allowed to compare today's new price to a ten year old car that's been stunk up by someone else.
@@turbokadett Yes, but, other people drive in other ways. The battery could be ok or not. Thank goodness battery cars are in decline and hydrogen cars aren't. What a waste of time effort and money battery EVs turned out to be. The residuals on some cars are enough to make a grown person weep. A few minutes on CAP Hpi should move you to tears as well. And, to cheer up everyone not stuck with a battery EV that nobody is rushing to buy, even the dealers, JCB is building hydrogen buses in Ireland. Perhaps Sadiq will put some on the roads in London Town to replace the travelling crematoria?
What do you mean there are no bells and whistles ? Stereo, Sun roof, Heater and by the look of it electric windows. Looks well spec'd for what it is to me.
Such things are not too difficult to add on via aftermarket supplies. Perfect platform for adding elements of luxury to. Let's face it, if you like good tunes, you want good audio solutions to convert away from dollar store grade audio. There is a market for upgrades, and all vehicle manufacturers should also offer choices in grade of components from the tires on up. I want adjustable suspension and will source it out, better audio, logical insulation so a heater wont have to drain the power, maybe a better grade of steering wheel, seat covering, laser cut 3M exterior protection film because it's better than not having it even if not travelling above the slow speed of the transaxle. Oh, even those transaxles can be upgraded should someone want it to go faster, but faster does mean more running costs, insurance for example.
It even may or may not have A/C. For a 6 grand new car, I'd expect a simple heater, and a bus-style fan just tacked onto the corner, if there was any heater at all.
I live in Cumbria, it's 8 miles to the shops (16 miles round trip). My work is 10 miles (20 mile round trip). This would be ideal for me. Great review too, Jack. Thanks. But you didn't mention the insurance costs etc... just the purchase price. So lots more research before an order.
I wouldn't go outside 30 mph limits in this. It's a moped. Insurance is a minefield if it's not listed try the Citroen Ami as an example on the insurance sites. If you only have a moped or bike licence better be sitting down.
7:10 - PTC = Positive Temperature Coefficient. It is a resistive heater in this electric car. The PTC aspect of it is a technical one: at first the heater will draw a high power. When the heater then heats up, its resistance will rise with temperature (therefore: positive coefficient: higher temperature higher resistance) and it will draw less power. This way, it regulates itself. It is the standard way to do simple air heaters like in a hairdryer. The unmarked switch may be for an accessory like seat heating or rear fog light. The A/C button is photoshopped out on the web site, so it is likely not functional on purpose. Still, you should have looked it up in the owners manual, that all products sold are required to be delivered with.

Thanks for identifying it. I was pretty sure that this company was just buying these on Alibaba and slapping a Union Jack on the steering wheel. How much does it cost in China?
I'm just trying to quantify what £6k could get as an alternative . I paid £5,995 for my 2014 Fiat Panda 4x4 Antarctica, at the time it only had 32k miles, one owner from new, it was 5 years old but looked mint... What a fun to drive, quirky car, full of Italian style, very economical to run, the grin factor is off the scale and above all it's very capable of performing many different roles. From commuting, shopping, long cross country trips, camping and as a weekend warrior hitting the green lanes with it's very capable 4x4 system. There was even a point during the pandemic where it increased in value to around £7,500. Would I sell it? No way, it's honestly been one of the best cars I've ever owned. Does this EV look tempting? Personally no, not even close 👎

Knowing that it's a $2.000 Alibaba car does take away from it but I will say that £6.000 is still quite intriguing. I'd take this for £6.000 over the €20.000+ Microlinos any day of the week. Price NEEDS to be the main selling point for microcars, I don't see myself paying a cent over €8.000 for 'not a car' no matter how it looks. I just want a road legal golf cart.
Not many years ago you could get a Dacia Sandero or a Suzuki Celerio for £5995, and they could seat 5. The Citroen Ami OUGHT to cost £5995, and at least that can seat 2 and do 30 mph. The Dogood is a useful thing in some respects, but it ought to cost no more than £3k.

As a 2 ton SUV driver (in the country where I need the ground clearance and back problems need a car that's easy to get in to) I fully endorse this type of car. I'd love one for those for little trips down to the village shop. Stick it on a trailer behind the campervan as a holiday run around! There are so many use cases for this type of vehicle. Hopefully we can flip the script on urban fashion and make these things really popular. I have nothing against SUVs but I do have something against people driving them in inappropriate places.

Yes to small cars! (though not necessarily always this small). I'm in Seattle, so not quite the land of mega pickups everywhere, but I recently went to Lima, Peru for a cousin's wedding. Near the end of the trip, I was in a taxi, and we pulled up beside a Subaru Outback. It looked so big! I asked the taxi driver if he thought that was a big car and he agreed. Was nice to have my perspective reset after years of growing cars. Oh, tangentially, I did see a few electric cars there, they've finally entered the market. A few Hyundai Ioniq electrics, Ionic 5s, a Kona electric, a Yema Auto Mengo, and probably a few other Chinese ones that I didn't recognize. A few of my taxis were BYDs but older ICE models.

Its a worthy purchase. If you wanna dial in the luxury features afterwards, its a perfect platform of which to do so. All the fasteners seems accessible without too much effort. I wanna see shows demonstrating a complete tear down and reassembly, and that will take care of concerns about how to upgrade anything about such a vehicle. There's alot of ways to mod these, people wanna know how to, or be of no mystery of the process of ownership and repairs. For the low cost microcar market, why not start with an off-the-shelf portable power generator/system and build the rest of the car to utilise it? Fitting associated solar panels would then be possible. Upgrading/replacing the battery would likely also be a relatively simple affair. Most importantly: We'd get to see Jack driving a Jackery 😀
Unfortunately it wouldn't produce enough energy to keep such a car going for anything more than a couple of miles at most (even on a bright sunny day in the most 'perfect' of conditions) - Basic Physics 101.
All the shortcuts you were taking around De Beauvoir are perfectly legal, as there's no signage saying no motor vehicles etc. That's one of the main differences between the 70s era traffic filters and the more modern "Low Traffic Neighbourhood" style approach. Councils have been pressured in some cases to use cameras instead of bollards to preserve through access for some types of vehicle (e.g. emergency vehicles, blue badge holders), but bollards are cheaper and quite frankly if someone wants to pass through on a moped or a microcar I don't really see a problem with that!
This is basically just one step above an ebike or electric skateboard, but I can see that being useful for people who would like that capability but have mobility issues and can't bike or skate.
Not everybody’s cup of tea but I do predict we will see lots of vehicles in this style around major cities over the coming years - especially once companies expand into full self driving.
I picked up a 2nd hand Tesla Model 3 AWD for 4.5x the price of £6k. It's a lot more than 4.5x the car, such as 440 HP vs 3 HP together with everything else it can do. I do agree however that microcars are important and should have a place in cities, but if you own it, then you have to keep it somewhere and be able to charge it. Won't suit so many people unfortunately.

The real big issue with the cheapest new car in the UK is that is costs more than the best bargain second hand EVs in the UK. You can get a whole lot of Zoe for £5,000 in Autotrader. As I write there are 40 listed on Autotrader at £5,000 or less. For example, a 53,000 mile 22kwh 2015 Zoe Dynamique with battery lease for £3,499. Or a similar model with only 41,000 miles and no battery lease for £3,950. At the other end of the sub £5,000 market is the 23,400 mile 22kwh 2016 Zoe Expression with no battery lease for £5,000. You get the point. Unless you really need a very small car and never intend to drive out of town you're better off getting a second hand EV that looks like a car and not a Fisher Price reject. So much to like about this. A properly covered cabin, good windscreens and a properly economical price. I hope that the thing does not grow a whole lot of additional and un-necessary extras. Bare bones and economical is what is needed by so many people. I do wonder if instead of ULEZ the traffic controls in cities ought to have a charge for any vehicle weighing more than say 1,200 kg, and a multiplier for widths over 1.5 metres and length over 3.5, EV or not. ICE cars and light commercials are going to disappear in time, simply because they will become worn out, and too expensive to run for fuel and servicing. There is an element that refuses to see the opportunities in change, there is an awful lot of doom mongering about EVs. But smaller EVs must be one of the real counter arguments to this. I suppose the Microline will be the posh sub-mini EV and this will be an example of economy EV personal transport. Please don't call me cheap, but even as I adore the [for me aspirational] Microlino, sense would kick in and I'd definitely consider one of these at retirement in four and half years time. If you are a couple, or especially kids that you need to bring to places, the space available is quite limited. Since you often need passanger space and cargo space. So, if you need a full sized car, having a microcar would have to be your 2nd car. Then the question becomes, is it really more usefull then just taking public transit?

What a waste of time effort and money battery EVs turned out to be.

It's like if a Citroen Ami was upgraded to be a proper car
It even may or may not have A/C. For a 6 grand new car, I'd expect a simple heater, and a bus-style fan just tacked onto the corner, if there was any heater at all.

Till then I need a van so will still stick with my 2009 Berlingo.
The electric Berlingo would make a good review for you, Jack! I'd enjoy watching that if you decided to try it out!
Best wishes from George
It could do w/ an RR rebadge
Those specs you listed would just about fit the iMiev. It's slightly above 1 ton, about 1.5M wide and 3.5M long.
Could just use the Japanese kei car standard.
@@Thelango99 I think the Kei car specs would make a very good starting point for higher VED and city centre restrictions. I shall look at the iMiev straight after this!
Best wishes from George
It looks more like a mobility scooter
I don't expect Rolls Royce fit and finish on a cheap new car.
But I can see at two Rolls Royces for less than that costs on Autotrader at the moment......😲
You wouldn't want to service and maintain those cheap Rollses... a Rolls is never cheap to run.
@@MetalTrabant I'd rather run a Rolls on a shoestring than drive that thing!
@@FFVoyager But you can't run an old Rolls on a shoestring... first of all it needs E5 fuel, which is very expensive, and it needs a lot of it.
And don't even start on the hydraulics of those old Silver Shadows... those are nightmares to maintain. They look nice on the yard though, when they are not leaking anything...
@@MetalTrabant the suspension is based on Citroen kit. Years ago I bought a GS with no suspension, brakes or steering. An afternoon replacing a couple of cupro nickel brake pipes and it was fine. 😆
Loved the delivery of the intro. And the writing. I liked the intro.
I've just spent a few days in London. Soooo many huge SUVs with just the driver and very few small cars. It'll be interesting to see how these do.
The question is Jack, are you going to give up your Polestar 2 and get one of these instead? 😉
Yeah, he's not wrong but it does amuse me he owns, in London, exactly the kind of car he says should be banned in London :D
2
@@YesterzineBig difference between London and London I feel. I think cars should be banned outright in the city center, but still own a car.
In the last video where they raced across London, he mentioned that most of the team are in Bristol, so it’d be great to see this vs his Polestar to Bristol. It would probably take a solid day as it would have to stick to A-roads! 😂
@@StillLivingInChaos At a nominal 50 miles of range (probably closer to 40-45 on that sort of trip, it'd probably have to stop to charge 2-3 times too (maybe more, depending on how circuitous the route is to avoid the high-speed roads that it's not permitted on)... but then, it's not designed for leaving its home city really :D
I wonder if it is valid for green gov discount. What would the final pay-down price be ?
Twizzy's weren't.
No
@@ziggarillo i guess vouchers have a lower limit for price. Car price has to be over 15K or something.
Free & they give you a pack of crisps & a pint, or whatever Brits feed on
If you mean the UK Government Plug-In Car Grant, it was withdrawn in 2022.
i actually want one of these...
That is so cute…I would like a version that did 40/50 mph and 100 mile range but if you never leave the city it’s great fun!
Jack makes every video great, one of the best motoring journalists for a long time.
I agree he makes the video's great, but he can't make the cars he drives great.
Used Citroen Ami's are sub £6k now with very low miles.
No they're not
There’s 4 on Autotrader right now, £6k or under.
It really is “White goods”. Add handle on the back and it could be mistaken for a kettle, because it wouldn’t look out of place in my kitchen… (Lol)
Get the kettle on, it’s time for a cup of tea. Cheers!
It's a hot cup o' tea, that should be an expression
It's a Mobility Scooooooooooooter ... (Phil)
Bur of course its not.
That's what i thought, looks absolutely ridiculous
how does it do in snow ? Where I live, there are 10 to 20 inch showfalls....
Coffin on road 😂. Don’t want anyone I hold dear to even even closer by 10m near this car.
There are mobility scooters that cost that much... Is that what it is underneath?
@antontaylor4530 Well, it sort of is. At least for the Dutch law. If it had two seats at the front, it would have been considered a microcar.* It's a direct competitor to the MOVE E4.
*The Canta is an exception to this rule, because they do their utmost best to only sell their cars to the disabled.
I just looked up mobility scooters in the UK, looks like the biggest/fastest (class 3) is limited to 8mph.
I like to examine the materials. I see what appears to be about the price of materials it takes to build two lowest cost bicycles, and the purchase of two or three plastic injection molded bins, that are molded into the shape of a car rather than a bin.
Let's face it, this car could be cloned, for under a grand.
@@sroberts605 That's partially true, you can get faster ones but they have to be registered as a quadracycle and have a number plate, so "technically" they're not mobility scooters.
It's better than a mobility scooter - at least fit for an 18 hole golf course.
What's with the blue / green front number plate?
So people can virtue signal that it is an EV...
Never seen an EV with a pale green plate. Only a small green stripe. @snowstrobe
I suspect it just has not had the protective wrap removed from manufacturer of plate
Great humour! Thanks for a fantastic review! On my saved list, when I need a laugh/pick-me-up!
I saw one of these outside of lidl the other day and I thought it was one of those roofed mobility scooters
Nah,you dreamt it.
I think Micro Cars are great for Cities, though I am wondering if this is really only usefull for single people. If you are a couple, or especially kids that you need to bring to places, the space available is quite limited. Since you often need passanger space and cargo space. So, if you need a full sized car, having a microcar would have to be your 2nd car. Then the question becomes, is it really more usefull then just taking public transit?
I would love to see someone who lives in a city, compare using a micro car vs public transit for a month. Ideally over a year, to compare seasons and different weather. I am still thinking its a just a gimick.
If I needed a small electric car, my favorite so far is the Citroen Ami. For one reason it has two seats in the front and I think it looks cool and rugged looking and gets respect from people that see it. There are two I have seen in the town I live in and the guys that drive them look like they are having fun. This Dogdoo Zero thing, it looks like someone put a weatherproof body over a mobility scooter, ideal for the UK weather though.
