JOHN BONHAM'S CYMBALS - THE RIDES - ANALYSIS AND DEMO

  • Опубликовано: 29 янв 2021
  • This is the first video in a series that will focus on Bonzo's cymbals, and my collection of Paistes. In this vid I take a look at the ride cymbals he used throughout his career with Zep, and I also showcase my own set of 24 inch Paiste rides ...
    (1960's 602 pre-serial 1960's - 3115gr, 1960's Giant Beat white label-2930gr, and 1974 2002 ride 3230gr).
    I wish there were more clear photos from above and behind John's kit so we could really identify what he was using but I think we have a pretty good idea of what he played live. In the studio he may have used any number of combinations of Paiste models, and maybe even a Zildjian here and there. Regarding the early part of 69, it's possible Bonzo was playing some of Carmine's Giant Beats. I forgot to mention that in the video, but that is something Carmine had said.
    EDIT: AFTER LOOKING CLOSELY AT PICS FROM '75, IT APPEARS TO ME THAT HE ACTUALLY PLAYED THE GIANT BEAT 24 RIDE FOR THE '75 SHOWS AS WELL. I COULDN'T FIND ONE PHOTO OF THE RIDE WITH A CLEAR PAISTE STAMP UNDERNEATH UNTIL 1977. ALSO THE COLOR, HAMMERING AND BELL SHAPE ALL LOOK LIKE THE GIANT BEAT IN '75 PICS AS WELL. INTERESTING!
    Hope you all enjoy this first cymbal profile vid. More to come.

    So when you say "2002 Crash"...you really mean "2002 Medium". I am sure the cymbal seen on Bonham's far right, to the right of his mounted Ride occasionally in the '70's was a 2002 18" Ride...not a Crash. George, your series of these cymbal reviews is so interesting. Thanks! I recently picked up off German eBay a Paiste 18" 2002 Ride. I use it to the right of my 24" Paiste 2002 Ride. I did see it listed on Bonham's Paiste endorsement agreement sheet we see online so much. It's where I got the idea to try one. Love it for steady crashing through a song. Utterly gorgeous sound! Peserial 24" 602s came in a variety of weights back then. Paperthin, Thin, Medium and Heavy. This one is a Thin imo. Late in the "Black Label" phase, in 1979, they added 24"s in the Thin Crash and Medium Ride designations and those six weights carried through into the Blue Label phase until the original 602s were discontinued.

    Incredible how much time all of us Bonzo nuts have spent thinking about this subject. Thanks for doing this. Didn't know much of the history.
    I always assumed once Bonzo went to 2002, that was it, he never used anything else, but now that I'm hearing what you're saying and hearing the cymbals side by side, I would not be surprised if Bonzo used the Giant Beat ride on at least on song on Presence and possibly the 602 on another one or two. Hard to say if it's the miking and balance of the mixes, but there definitely seems to be some variety on that record. Could be the case with other Zep records, but hearing the example here and also recalling a listen I had to that record a few months ago, I remembered thinking the cymbals had a different sound to them.
    Also, someone send this video to Carmine and see if he remembers anything about the cymbals from the early days?

    I had an 18" Ludiwg/Paiste cymbal. It sounded pretty good, a bit like an 18" medium 2002 with not as much sustain. I was so afraid to strike it hard as I knew it was old and I just didn't have the heart to hit it the way I do my normal 2002s. Still a fascinating bit of Paiste and Bonham history. Page and Grant had a reputation for being very commercially aware and a lot of European bands on small budgets would hire stuff for USA rather than transport. On that first tour they were doing support spots originally so the budget would have been small?

    In your opinion is there a difference between 70’s black label 2002’s and the red labels which came out in 81? I think the red label 24 ride sounds heavier than what Bonham used. I’ve heard that the red labels were different. To me it sounds like he’s not using the 2002 ride until Knebworth.

      I often wonder if he would've been a bit adventurous. He always was, when you consider he changed shell types, to the latest thing like acrylic, then steel. Then again he may have found what he was comfortable with by 77 and stuck with that. sadly he didn't live very long , just 32 which is relatively very young. When you look at the other drummers of his era, they all kept up to some degree with newer trends, at least in style, and brands. Now, Physical Graffiti has half the songs that were older and the other half were recorded in 1974 at Hedley Grange (according to Wikipedia). So, are you saying that he didn't use the 2002 until the Presence album? I have played Giant Beats and it really sounds like he uses them on I, II, and III. But, IV they sound sharper with more clarity. Any thoughts?

      Bill, the 2002s were not even released until late spring/summer in the year of 1971. Unless he was using 2002 prototypes (highly doubtful) those are GBs on Zep IV. Maybe they just recorded or mixed them differently. Seems to me Bonham only went to the 2002s after Paiste stopped making the Giant Beats in 1973. What ride do you think he was using on Zep II?

    • @BONHAMOLOGY
      @BONHAMOLOGY  2 года назад +1

      I think it was likely a 602 , unless he had a Giant Beat as well at that time. Pretty much all of the photos I've ever seen throughout 1969 look like a 602 to me

    How does the 602 compare to the Alex Van Halen model as far as wash goes

      I don't know, I've never played one, but I hear the AVH is more similar to the old 2002 24.

      @@BONHAMOLOGY I had an AVH and it was just too washy as a ride, as a crash it was awesome, I now have a late model 2002 ride and it's not really crashable, too heavy I'm looking for something in between.

      @@timbrown2637 Ah ok. Yeah, It's a little tricky...do you like the reissue Giant Beat 24?

    • @timbrown2637
      @timbrown2637 3 года назад

      @@BONHAMOLOGY I haven't had a chance to play one because nobody around here has one, the reissue 24 2002 ride is good for a ride but has kind of humming aftertones. I also have a fairly recent avedis medium 24 that is on the quiet side and doesn't crash well.

    Where do you buy your drum kits from?

    • @BONHAMOLOGY
      @BONHAMOLOGY  3 года назад

      They were bought from many different sources, mostly individual sellers, over the course of 30+ years. This new Ludwig Legacy was the first brand new kit I ever bought. I got it direct, ordered from the factory.

    George,we all know Carmine invited Paiste cymbal's along with everything else

    I just cannot play cymbals that are either dinked, cracked or repaired. They look terrible and look so bad. Just a no no for me. I do respect keeping them alive though,George.
