Great knowledge in this video. Man I have a pre serial 602 22” ride and it is nowhere near as shiny as that one. Guess the oxidation got it. Love this series
Cool, love the history lesson. thanks for digging into the internet archives on the subject. I've always thought that Bonzo's crash on the first album was a bit of an outlier. I've got some cheap cymbals that kinda remind me a bit of it, and I reckon he didn't have a ton of money back in those days for fancy cymbals. No idea if Paiste had budget line cymbals back in those days, you know, like they had Paiste 400 line for a while? Something like that. cheers
Yeah, I suspect it was a 16 Zildjian or Zyn. Paiste had the cheapo Ludwig Standards, which sounded pretty bad IMO unless you got lucky. Before that they had the Stanople, amd Stambul lines. The better quality line was 602 made of B 20 Bronze
Paiste (post WWII) always had budget cymbals. First Paistes were nickel silver Stambuls with brass Zilkos (1947) being the budget line. In 1957, Paiste starting using B20 with the Super Formula 602 line with Stambul and Zilko slotting in underneath. In 1959, the Formula 602 line that we all know and love came out with Stambul and Dixie slotting in underneath. At some point during the 60s the budget SUPER line was introduced. There was also a very rare, short-lived nickel silver line called Paiste Standard (these were not Ludwig Standard) sometime stamped as Zilko Standard in the late 50s/early 60s. The Ludwig Paiste (3-star), Ludwig Standards and Paiste Stanople (actually rebranded Dixies imo) were only sold through Ludwig in North America. Paiste's first B8 cymbals were the Stambul 65 (released in 1965 - this is a different line than Stambul - They did not replace the regular Stambul line like a lot of people think) and then Giant Beat in 1967.
@@toddlittle9095 dang, great info man, thanks! I actually thought Zliko was Zilco....is that a whole different company? Or am I remembering something incorrectly? So there's a Stambul AND a Stambul 65? I wonder why I've never seen those? Rare? did they not make it out of the 70s because rockers beat the daylights out of them?
@@davewestner Zilco = Zildjian / Zilko = Paiste. Yes, Stambul and Stambul 65 were two distinct lines. Many think that the S65 replaced Stambul in 1965 and that production of NS12 Stambuls ceased after 1964 , but that's incorrect. Stambul 65s are seen more often in Europe. I have a friend in Germany who has something like 10 of them and LOVES them. Ludwig didn't distribute them in the USA, so there aren't many around in the States. You don't see too many Stambuls or Dixies in the US for the same reason. Ludwig didn't carry them because they had their own versions. Ludwig Standard were Stambul or Stambul-quality and Stanople was Dixie or Dixie quality. Plus they (S65) were only made from 1965-1973. The original Stambul line was made up until 1978 (switching to being made of B8 alloy sometime around 1971/2)
@@toddlittle9095 Thanks for the info. Just when I thought I had heard of all the Paistes! Must have been confusing having Zilco/Zilko. Zilko is most definitely not a very googleable cymbal.

Hey George, a bit off topic, but what Zildjians (model, age, weight) do you think your average successful pop/rock drummers were using 64-69? So many drummers had this really distinct Zildjian (probably) sound, and the best example that immediately comes to mind is, let's say, Bill Ward, first Sabbath album - it's that super smooth, broad spread, big hollow bell sound. James Gang The Bomber is also a great example, especially in the Bolero bridge. I used to think that these guys were all simply playing brand new Zildjians, from 66, 67, etc but the 60s Zildjian As I've played never sound quite right, and then I started thinking these guys probably had the cymbals they were using for years, so do you think that sound is more 50s or perhaps pre-Ringo or do you think these guys were playing brand new cymbals? The only new cymbal I've played that has that type of sound is the new Giant Beat 20" (that size specifically) - which I'm obsessed with.
I enjoy your videos however, I am confused if you look at the Paiste agreement for John Bonham‘s contract, you were clearly see all of the 20 inches that he ordered were all ride cymbals not crashes. @@toddlittle9095 That's interesting. I don't accept that list as being comprehensive though. Clearly he had 18 and 20 2002 crashes in the US 73 tour , but they are not noted in the list. So either that list is incomplete or Bonzo simply had some either purchased or given to him off record.
