Woodturning - Natural Edge Oblong Oak Bowl
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 17 июл 2021
- In this video we will be turning a chunk of Black Jack Oak which I got for free in my community. I’ll hope to keep the bark intact and create an oval or oblong bowl which I’ll finish with General Finishes Wood bowl finish.
I’ll begin woodturning between centers, shape the outside with a bowl gouge and reverse mount with a tenon to shape the inside of the bowl.

Beautiful natural edge bowl Robert.
Thank Jack! Glad you like it.
You make it look so easy and it’s not easy 😊
Haha Lois, it just takes practice! Not too long ago I had my struggles with turning bowls and stuff but I've been turning almost every day for the past year and I've seen my skills improve quite a bit.
Wow! What a beautiful piece of oak! You've won another Subscriber!!
Thanks for subscribing! I hope you enjoy the my future videos!
Beautiful oblong bowl, Robert. Great job.
Thanks Rob!
Absolutely beautiful work 💯🇺🇸
Very nice Robert, such a dramatic effect, I will have to make a copy:) Keep well, Rob
Haha, Harry gives you permission to try it.
Fantastic bowl, looks stunning.
Thank you very much!
Really beautiful turning. Dig the shape.
Thanks a lot Ralph, glad you like it.
Great looking bowl
Thanks MVT!
I love the acorn joke! That’s the kind of cheesy jokes I love to tell! Thank you for showing that your tool steel needs to be sharpened and dressed from time to time! I wish more woodturners did that!
Great looking bowl, stay safe, John
Thanks for watching John!
Ice work, thanks for sharing. Full View and Like 👍
Thanks a lot Allen!
So impressed with your work, great job, new viewer, love what you're doing, awesome vision.
Thanks Daniel! Glad you are liking what you're seeing.
Harry I loved the joke- an oak tree , in a nut shell. Keep em coming. Oh and the bowl was nice too hodge. Bout to try and turn a crotch winged vase, glass, bowl. Piece of oak courtesy of Hurricane Laura.
Sounds exciting! I think I need to turn me one of those crotch pieces with the wide rim.
Great bowl Robert well done
Thanks 👍
Awesome... !
Thanks Cecil, glad you think so!
You killed me with that one liner, I'm still laughing, I love your channel! Going to continue watching, trying to......
Glad you got a chuckle from it! Thanks for watching!
Keep your videos exactly the same, they are great! Love the beaver! Great bowl
Great bowl, Hodge!

Very nice Robert
Thanks Mark!
It's really nice Hodge a bit scary to turn but the result is very beautiful. Thanks for sharing bye cu in the next video bye.
Thanks Laurence.
Looks good.
Thanks Brad!
That turned out great
wow nice bowl!
Thanks Eduardo!
Very nice! 😎
Thanks Tim!
Sweet!
Thanks so much!
Very nice indeed
That's really nice Robert! Looks like that piece of oak was really thirsty. I like that design. Thanks for sharing your creativity with me again. Stay safe, Vickie
Haha! It was Vickie. I got sort of scared there when it soaked it up so much and was worried it would stay darker than the rest of the bowl but it all evened out in the end.
Very nice. Love that you oiled the bowl before you applied the Wood Bowl Finish (poly). Really brought out the colors of the oak. Well done buddy.
Thanks Doug, the wood was very thirsty!
Looks great, Robert. That finish really brought out the grain. I'd like to see another like this but leave the volcano in the middle and make it the bowl part. Take care.
Bill
Thanks Bill. I'll give your suggestion some thought next time I'm rooting around my wood pile.
Hi Robert, really enjoyed watching you work. You make it look so easy. Turned out so nice. I have never tried making a bowl that wide because I have a mini lathe. Thank you always sharing.
I sometimes feel that the larger the turning the easier it is to get the right curves. Thanks for watching!
Parabéns meu Professor , Belo trabalho
Espero que você tenha aprendido muito!
Another great one, those large wings swinging in the lathe really keeps you alert and concentrating, much more than just the physical exertion but well worth it.
They sure do keep me alert!
Looks absolutely fantastic Rob…..wonderful piece. Harry’s Acorn joke was awful, though 😖
Thanks Adrian! I keep telling Harry he needs to work on his jokes.
I have the same lathe and bandsaw, for whatever that's worth.
I'm completely happy with the lathe. As for the bandsaw....not a fan of the ceramic guides and more power could always be a plus.
@@HodgePodgeWoodWorks Those guides kinda suck, and they aren't cheap. I've replaced one, and I'm missing one. And yes, the Powermatic rocks.
That wood looked pretty thirsty.
Yes, very much so!
Looks good. I’m not a fan of all music, and no narrative. Bowl looked great in the end.
Thanks for the feedback Mark. The next video will have a bit more commentary.
I thought you might be onto a game a whack-a-mole when you started applying the Starbond to the cracks (every time I so much as look at a piece of oak it develops loads of tiny checks), but it's come out great. As ever, nice work, Robert.
Yeah Steve I have a few rough turned oak bowls that have cracked significantly. I may try to do some sort of inlay at some point.
