A Modern Twist on a Timeless Piece | Wood Turning a Dough Bowl

- By far one of my more favorite pieces I have turned in quite some time. I have been on a kick of watching hand carved dough bowls & something that I have considered getting into but I wanted to see if it was something that I could turn. The oval shapes have always been the attention grabber when it comes to traditional dough bowls but since I was turning it, I knew that obviously would not be an option however the handles were absolutely a possibility so I started there. I had this dry piece of beautiful ambrosia maple that I thought would make the perfect piece for the bowl & I think my hunch was correct! I did not realize just how much figure, grain & color this piece of wood had in it until I started turning some away because a lot of the grain you see was not really shown on the outside. It is safe to say that dough bowls will now be something I add to my line up of products in the future & I look forward to making MANY more. Let me know what you think of this bowl & if you enjoyed the video, please be sure to like & subscribe!

Making the pizza dough in it at the end was great!
I’m saving that for the hopefully part 2 where I make a outdoor pizza oven!
Major bowl envy now!!😂
This was definitely one of my more recent favorites!
I have made my own bread from scratch for decades, and this gave me my worst (biggest) case of bowl envy yet! ❤❤
Your work is amazing! Are your treasures available to purchase, if so, where and how?

I like it very much. The handles are a nice feature.
Beautiful bowl!

Please write a letter to santa claus that you urgently need a dust collection. Your Bowls are beautiful
Nicely done
Fantastic bowl and camera work! You are skilled
Thank you very much!
It’s a beaut! Nice design.
Thank you!
Nice Work!
Love this bowl. I like the handles.
Thank you! The handles have made their way to other pieces because I loved them on this bowl so much too lol
totally awesome ! 😊
Geoges!
Very nice.
Thank you!
That came out amazing. I had not seen anyone make handles like that. Well done.
Thanks for that! Using the bandsaw seemed like the most straightforward so I figured I would give it a try lol
Great design and impeccable execution.
Thank you very much!
Fantastic design and excellent result. A lovely piece.
Thank you very much!
This bowl is awesome. I really like how you turned the wide rim then trimmed in the handles.
Thank you Greg! Yeah to me that seemed to be the easiest approach to it. The only thing about that is making sure the wall thickness was where I wanted it but it just made sanding easier and not having to worry about two handles flying around while doing it.
A beautiful bowl, really great.
Really like this one
Thanks Cliff, this is one I am pretty proud of.
What a great piece.
Thank you Lee!
10/10 Great Job!
Thank you, I appreciate that!
Great video and another beautiful bowl!!
Thanks Wyatt!
Beautiful dough bowl. Nice piece. Can I ask what kind of wood?
Thanks! This is a piece of ambrosia maple that has some spalting & figure
Beautiful piece. Is this a newer shape for you? I don’t think I’ve seen you do this style before. Also I like the new panning/scrolling shots you’re filming. Very nice.
Thank you & yes it is. I tried something similar on a small scrap piece of sycamore the other day to see if it was possible & to figure out how I would do it so once I got that I thought it would be fun to make a bigger one. and thank you for the comments about the new shots; I'm currently experimenting with all this so its cool you noticed!
Your bowls are beautiful. What do you finish them with? I assume some sort of oil?
Thank you! For the majority of my work I use Real Milk Paint Co. Real Tung oil with a coat of wood wax but sometimes I will use mineral oil & bees wax, varnish, etc. Really just depends on the turning.
Fantastic work. I'm gonna have to try this out at some point. What chuck are you using and how are you going about sharpening your gouges? I have a chuck from PSI and it definitely works but has the two bar tightening which is cumbersome for bigger bowls. I recently got a Tormek T8 for sharpening and it has helped a lot. Very repeatable for whatever profile you choose but the stock wheel it comes with is not great for taking off loads of metal so as long as you are close to your grind then it's awesome.
Thank you! Currently I am using a Nova supernova2 chuck with 3" jaws. I have had this chuck for 8 years and its been fantastic. I completely understand the frustration with the bar tightening. I had that style before I bought this one & it was always cumbersome & I never felt like it had a great hold. Funny enough, I have started using again though for smaller turnings just so I don't have to change out the jaws lol For my grinder, I use a rikon slow speed grinder with a CBN wheel & the wolverine sharpening jig. Its something I have also had for many years. I still have a stone wheel attached for sharpening of other items but mainly use the CBN side for gouges. From what I know, the Tormek is a great system. I have looked into one myself but the CBN wheel upgrade kept me with the rikon. Maybe one day I'll upgrade to the tormek lol
Здравствуйте! как вы сушите древесину ?
