This Wood Looks Exotic but It Came From Down the Street | Wood Turning

  • I had the opportunity to turn something special this past week for a client as well as working with come awesome wood. I was contacted a few weeks ago to see If I could turn a few custom items for a family from a box elder tree that was on the property where they grew up. At first, it seemed that the wood may have been to rotted to work with (which is why it was being taken down) but after cutting it up, I was able to find a few chunks that I was able to turn. This is only the third time that I have ever turned flaming box elder & it is hard to believe that this wood came just 10 minutes down the road from my shop. The colors in this tree is something that is almost similar to exotic species; it is just absolutely beautiful. This is one of three bowls that will be turned from this tree with one more that will be posted in the future... If you enjoyed this video, please be sure to click the like button & subscribe!

It’s a beautiful wood for sure! The red coloration really sets box elder apart from other woods.

Thank you! Yeah over time it will fade but the other few times I have turn box elder, they have surprisingly stayed pretty colorful for quite sometime.

I bet the family will absolutely love this bowl. It is gorgeous! What brand of face shield are you using? It looks comfortable. Thank you

They did love it! I’ve got one more though from this log that will blow this one away that I’ll be posting in a few weeks. Super excited for that one. And it’s just a generic face shield off amazon lol nothing special but it’s been a very good one. I’ve had it for a few years now and have had no problems.

I have never seen wood like that before, certainly don’t get grain like that in woods from Australia. Good job .
