Amazing work, John! It really turned out fantastic! Well done!!! 😃
And you can use it even for fruits!
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thanks! You too!
Nice work John, nice piece of Irish oak and a lovely finish, what a great project to do in the workshop hope your mum love it, Great video mate
Welcome back John, so looking forward to see you in the workshop making things giving me inspiration.
The perfect piece of timber for the build out looks stunning
Beautiful piece John. Your mother is absolutely delighted with it, she is very lucky ♥
didn't see any "carving" I saw a lot of hand planing and grinding though. i'm sure true carvers would have something to say about that. Nice project though.
Hi, John, nice to see you back, may I suggest that if you do this again forstner drill in various places to the different depths, takes the guess work out and also helps prevent wear on the discs.
Very nice indeed. I think that's the first time I've actually seen someone use bench dogs on a job!
Beautiful piece John - shows your creative side. Looking forward to your next project. Thanks for sharing.
More to come!
Decent job, but if I were you, I would’ve tried to keep the live edge on the one side and make it a feature
Great looking project. It's a beast. But what a beautiful finish.
Thanks
Lovely stuff, I think give this a try. Never thought of making a big bowl that shape before. I have an Arbortech Turboplane disc for my grinder. They are worth a look if you're doing more of this kind of carving work in the future. Slightly bigger chips and less dusty but still an outside job!
I have some discs on the way
Absolutely loved this video. Inspirational. Especially as I have a slab of Spalted English Oak in my garage....
Wonderful!
looks amazing! I might try making one of these! I've got a couple pieces of thick cherry that would work very well I think!
Cherry would be lovely
Cracking John. Great project to try. Would be a great little products to sell on the side. But in all honesty most people wouldn’t pay for the cost of the that beautiful oak these days. But lovely job fella. 👍🍻
Thanks 👍
When you started I was expecting you to do one of those diagonal table saw tricks for the bulk of the curve. Nice job!
Thanks 👍
You channel is amazing and very easy to follow, con grats, from Nicaragua.
Thank you very much!
Great bowl, I made one similar a few years back for the missus, I used Tassie Oak, turned out great, not as long as yours, wife loves it, so a winner. Cheers
Nice one, I need to make one for the missus too, I have ordered a few different type carving discs to test out. The flapper discs are hard work.
Lovely job 👏🏼
Great to see you back doing some inspiring projects, might give this a go have a nice ash board looking for a project this could be just the thing. Good to see you back posting content
Cheers Tony
Beautiful workshop. I like that mitre station too and the lovely woodworking skills to go with it. New fan!
Thanks, and welcome along.
It’s lovely to see you back with a beautiful piece of work. You were missed my fellow sparky
Cheers
Wow amazing work well done chap. Welcome back😀
Thank you! Cheers!
Very nice.
So glad to see you making content again John. Keep up the great work.
Much appreciated!
Thanks for the effort making the project and thanks for the effort making the video. I am glad you are back and hope you stay a while.
great job john looks fantastic
Thank you for your reply.
BESSEY side clamps WNS-Set-MF might be useful
Great to see more from you John. More please 😁
More to come!
Very nice, great grain in the wood.
It sure is!
Turned out well John 👍don’t give a sh1t about spelling good content
Nice work as always John. Any recommendations for where to look for slabs of oak in Ireland?
Adverts and donedeal are good spots for finding hardwood slabs, for milled hardwood I go to McMahons
@@JohnMcGrathManInShed thanks. Much appreciated
Stunning finish on the oak, has come out really well, worth all the hard work. A wood carving disc may have made life easier, although the look of some of them scare the life out of me!
I have ordered some to test out. I'll share the results.
never heard of those before, very nice
I love using the Shinto rasp, but I always put a glove on the hand holding the rasp section or it scrapes the heck out of my skin. Just an FYI for fellow woodworkers.
I saw a Taytools video where he put a quick plastic handle and a nut on the front of his rasp. Might work for you.
Stunning job John nice to see you bringing videos to us again. Tip from me pick up one the cheap carving discs in off eBay or even temu would make hogging out the middle easier then flap disc just to refine it. 👍🏴
Will do
Always a joy to watch and listen to your thought process. Thank you.
My pleasure!
Why didn’t you use your no7 plane for flatterning or use a router jig?
No 7 planes are good for jointing and flattening long boards, when a board is this rough and cupped the No7 will not work, it will ride over all the humps and hollows. As for the router jig I didn't want to build a flattening sled it wasn't really needed.
There are very few words as good in an eastern Irish accent as "platter"
😂
Do you think a kutzall wheel on the grinder or a router sled might be a good option to hog out the bulk?
Kutzall wheel would be better, I just didn't have one and would need to order one online.
Loved the vid ... certainly inspired me
Great
Good one John, very talented, Good to see you here again,
Cheers William
Great job! You make me want to try with red yew wood...
Go for it!
Nice!
Thanks!

I make some Cajun Dough bowls out of sinker cypress to sell here in Louisiana. Instead of a flapper disk (I hate the dust also) I used a 10.16 CM (4 in.) chainsaw attachment for my side grander its faster and no dust and does a great job. your oak one looks great I will have to try one also
Thanks for the tip, I will definitely get something better than a flapper disc for the next one.
