My buddy asked if I knew how to turn a bowl that's not round. I had no idea but I do now.
Thanks for the video. I'll forward this to him.
Glad you found the video helpful Bob and thanks for watching.
Very nice looking bowl, Mike and a great video!
Thank you Sir!
Taker care
Mike
You are so lucky to have so many types of beautiful wood to play with. The C Wax made the already beautiful grain pop very nicely. Thanks for the step by step set up procedure, very helpful. You get an official "Atta Boy" on this one Mike.
Hi Gil, and thank you. I have been very fortunate over the years to "acquire" some lovely pieces of wood, most of it is as a result of being tipped of by friends in my village that trees are being felled.
Take care
Mike
I liked you video so much that I rewatched the video 3 more time.i got to try my hands at it.keep up the good work
Thanks Matt much appreciated.
Enjoyed your video Mike, at age 70 this is my first such attempt since High School. As you would say Cheers!
Thank you ...never too late to start 🙂
Once again Mike pulled a great one out the bag and the t-wax made the grain pop a treat all the best
Thank you Barry, glad you liked it mate.
Take care
Mike
Great video Mike. I haven't turned a natural edge bowl for quite a while so that was a great refresher. Having said that I normally don't get much wood turning during March and April as I'm normally working in my veggie plot. However, we've had such a bad winter I've been confined to my workshop.
I was talking to another old gardener a few days ago and he quoted me
this old saying:
"If by April, the bees are still in their hives,
It's the mark of a good season to grow some chives"
Best....
Alan.
Thank you Alan, what a terrible torture it must be to "have" to go into the workshop!! ;)
Great quote too, but alas the feared " Amazonian Chive Beetle" has reared its ugly head in these parts, so my chive farming has taken a huge hit - could always start growing tatties I suppose .. lol
Take care mate, and always a pleasure.
Mike
Nice bowl Mike; good instructions as usual!
Thank you John.
Excellent video, Mike!!! Very informative.
Thanks J much appreciated.
Not gonna lie Mike, I get excited when I check my RUclips subscriptions and I see you have posted a new video. Simply because I know its going to be well done and informative. Keep up the good work!! Cheers from Canada!!!
Hi Craig, and thank you. I really do appreciate your very kind words.

Worth the wait Mike 😂🤪. I like the effect of the wax making the grain stand out. 😊😊

Hi Mike, that's the most versatile chuck I have seen and on my shopping list. 73 de Mike MTG.
It is well worth considering Mike.

Mike
Great explanation! This is the first time I've seen the bowl balanced this way. Makes so much sense.
Thanks Larry.
Thanks for the bristle brush tip.
Excellent hint I thought
Great bowl Mike - job well done. I have had one eye done so i know what its like. Back to the turning now Cheers
Hello Mike,
See: "You've done it again!"( Another blunder on my part). Excellent ,as usual, and I too, use Steb centres quite a lot. Thanks again. Bernard
Hi Bernard, and thank you. Is that you as well (Allen Tsui) ?
Take care, and thanks for watching
Mike
Hello Mike, Allen is my Son in Law, ( I have no fancy nom de plume) and my computer expert, based in London. Confusion of old age caused me to use the wrong channel, twice! Thanks, Bernard (in Cheshire).
Really pleased I watched this one Mike. I was just starting natural edge Walnut bowl and wanted a flat base tis sorted it fir me. Also enabled me to put my logo insert in the base by fostner.
Thanks
Watching and learning from you is very enjoying thanks.
Thank you James, that is very kind.

Mike
Another beautiful turning Mike

Thanks Stuart much appreciated.
Beautiful bowl. Liked the polish. Thanks
Thank you Michael .
Hello Mike, I can just see that heaped with walnuts, hazelnuts, pecans and Brazil's at Christmas. Very nice. Regards, Glenn. :-)
Thank you Glenn, glad you like it.

Mike
Wow Mike that C Wax really accentuates that grain doesn't it . Lovely piece of Ash, Lovely turning. Thanks for sharing your video as always
Kind Regards
Col
Thank you Col, glad you liked it
Cheers
Mike
Great tutorial Mike 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you Douglas.
Very nice Mike. I use a tool rest as a reference point for alignment between centers. Set it up where it doesn't hit and put a piece of tape on it. Like you say, many ways. i just turned a very difficult one. Video coming out tonite, take a look. Take care, Larry
Thank you Larry, good tip regarding the mark on the tool rest too, thank you. I am just trying to catch up on things, so will take a look at your video soon :)
Thanks for stopping by.
Cheers
Mike
Good looking bowl Mike, excellent institutions as always👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you Alan

Mike
Lovely bowl. Thank you
Nice bowl. I have been using whole 6 inch diameter logs but I really like that swept look you got there. Time to sit through my wood pile for a piece of oak to try that on. Thanks for the video and encouragement to try something new. Cheers
Thank you Terry, let me know how you get on mate.
Take care
Mike
THAT was a great bowl turned.
Thanks Manjit.
Hell Mike,
You've done it again! Another project right on cue for me.( Similar turning histories since ca. 2010). My natural edge bowls have been in Sycamore, just treated with Danish Oil as you have done. Quite pleasing. Perfectly round branch wood also gives good natural edged feet to tall vessels. I now have logs of Cedar and Japanese Pagoda wood (1 soft and 1 very hard) to attempt your way. Recently I investigated laminated Beech worktop with wax colouring, with similar results to yours. The wood strips gave "interesting" colour distribution. Dried out light tan shoe polish gave an excellent sheen and pleasant fragrance, and Wife positively approved; awarding the bowl space on the sideboard. No voids between laminates, but tool quickly blunted. Bernard.
Lol Bernard, great minds eh ;)
The laminated piece sounds interesting, nice one.
Thanks for watching
Take care
Mike
Very much enjoy your videos. Clear, no nonsense and of course very instructive. I'm wondering about doing this kind of operation with carbide tools.
PS I also like your musical scores
Thank you Rick

Thanks JP, as always my friend

😎
What a beautiful bowl. I’ve wondered how you can get that shape. Now I know! Must have a go myself. Those Cryo tools are unbelievably good aren’t. Best purchase I ever made. Good talking to you earlier on. Best wishes, Graham
Thank you Graham, I am so happy with the Cryos, they have excellent balance in Simons handles, and hold a really good edge. Enjoyed our chat too mate, shortish though it was!
Speak soon
Mike
Wonderful work Mike!
Thank you Aeneas
Cheers
Mike
nice job as always.. like the c wax effect. cheers
Thanks Graham.
Lovely form, and I like how the C Wax enhances the grain. I turn a lot of green ash here in the US (Fraxinus pennsylvanica is the scientific name), and I do love how it works and finishes. The grain looks similar to what you have there. Nicely done!
Thank you Roy, Ash is one of my top five woods to turn, especially Olive Ash.
Take care
Mike
Mike, I enjoyed your video. I start the outside just like you do until I reach the lowest part of the bark. Then, I cut from the bark toward the base/foot until I get below the lowest part of the bark on the outside. This tend to make it easier to keep the bark from being pried off. There is nothing wrong with the way you do it. As you said there are many ways of doing it.
Glad you liked the video Marshall. I agree with what you say, on this piece I was confident that the bark was solid, however I use the same method as you when the bark appears to be less stable.
Take care
Mike
Mike, you had a nicely regular, uniform block. Mine are typically not so pretty to start with. So, I wait to balance until I have a complete cut circle against the bark edge. Then I use the lower bark edge to balance one way and the upper bark edge to balance the other way.
Great job
Alan
Hi Alan, you are right of course, and thank you for sharing your method for a not so "pretty" starting blank :)
Take care, and thanks for stopping by
Cheers
Mike
Great video and a beautiful bowl. 👍🏻😃
Thank you on both counts Raymond
Cheers
Mike
The bowl looks great Mike, I like the way the C wax emphasised the grain in a subtle way. Lovely finish, soft sheen suits it perfectly. I’m noticing quite a few Simon Hope tools being used as of late. Nice quality, hearing many good reviews on them. Looks like I need to check out his itinerary.
All the best,
Geof
Hi Geof, and thank you. Since spending three days on Simons stand at Harrogate last year I fell in love with his tools, so ... sold most of mine and now almost only use his, as they suit me down to the ground :)
Take care, and thanks for watching.
Cheers
Mike
Very beautiful and finely shaped. Marc
thank you marc, much appreciated

Mike
Great looking bowl Mike . Always enjoy your vids . Cheers take care.
Thank you Glen, very much appreciated.

Mike
I've heard about these embellishment waxes, and now I think I gotta try them! I would love to try it on some of our local Ash around here, it's open grain structure would be perfect for this!
They can be very effective, and Ash is one of the ideal woods to apply it to Ky
Thanks for watching
Cheers
Mike
A beautifully balanced bowl Mike, love it!
Thank you William, I just wish they all came out as balanced ;)
Cheers
Mike
Yup. It doest happen that often (enough) !
Great explanation Mike. I really liked the way your accentuated the grain with the wax. 👍
Thanks on both counts Kuffy

Mike
Another great video Mike, thank you for sharing. Just about every time I search for an instructional video, your tops on the list! I am going to try my hand at a natural edge bowl. This will be my first time so I wanted to watch a couple videos before I tried. Very nice job my friend!
Thank you Dylan, I really appreciate your very kind words.
Good timing Mike, I have a blank between centers attempting my first live edge bowl. Will see how it turns out but I'm sure it won't look any thing like yours!! I really enjoy your videos and your soft spoken manner.
Thank you
Cp
Thank you Carl, take your time and light cuts, and I'm sure it will turn out just fine :)

Just a beautiful piece of art. Going to try the wax you used. It is on order and can't wait to give it a try on some oak. Ethan sends his regards. Thank you so much. Hope the wax will work on some very thin turnings .
Thank you Frank, and give Ethan my best as well my friend.

Fantastic effect on the grain there pal. I might have to invest in some of that wax. I love how the microcrystalline wax feels and how easy it is to apply.
Thank you once again, very much appreciated.

Mike, gorgeous bowl, will certainly like to try the C-Wax when it becomes available in the US.
Thank you Dennis, I'm not sure if Jeff Hornung at The walnut log studio has it, but worth asking :)

Sounds lovely Mike .The tip about positioning between the two steb centres was great .
Take care .
Chris et al !!
hi Chris, and thanks for watching and commenting mate.
See you and Nicola soon
Take care me ol' mucka
Mike
Beautiful work Mike. What sort of moisture content is preferable for natural edge work? New turner here
Thank you Michael, if you dont want much movement I would suggest around 8% moisture content, but "wetter" is fun to turn and can give some pleasing results after movement has stopped.
Cheers
Mike
Great video Mike, I like the way you started between Steb centres, much easier than mounting on a faceplate. A great demonstration all round. Despite all my fancy inlay work, turning natural edge bowls is actually my favourite thing to do on the lathe. See you soon mate. Cheers, Jim
Thank you Jim, there are many different ways to do this, but I do prefer this method, much easier to get the balance just right - or in my case as right as "I" can get it ...lol
As you say, see you soon!
Cheers
Mike
Beautiful piece of wood.
Thank you Glen
Cheers
Mike
Just come across this Mike. A lovely project and it was explained and demonstrated very clearly. I'll certainly be giving this a go!
A concern - when removing the 'nub' end of the foot with your chisel your left hand strayed into the danger zone in front of it - in the direct line of fire! I know to my cost the dangers of not keeping both hands behind the cutting edge only too well! Stay safe Mike, find another way of holding the work.
Thank you and I totally agree with your suggestion, I really don't know what I was thinking, not a method I normally employ. Thanks for the concern too.
Stunning, Mike, just stunning! I know this is going to inspire a lot of turners to do Natural Edge bowls. I think I might be one of them!!
Cheers,
.....Gord
Thank you Gord, your comments and support are always really appreciated my friend.

Lovely bowl Mike and I love the finish you got with the C Wax, I just might have to get some of that
Thank you Cliff, definitely worth a try.
Cheers
Mike
A lovely looking bowl Mike. I know you’re not really one for colouring but I’ve had some nice effects from stained ash with liming wax. Martins Ti wax would do the trick nicely, or even some of the metallic waxes would look good.
Cheers
Ben
Thanks Ben, I think these "embellishers" are great in certain scenarios, but have to say that the majority of the time I like it natural. I know I'm a boring old fart! ;)
Take care, and thanks for watching
Cheers
Mike
You're far from boring mate. Old and farty? who am I to comment. ;o)
See you at UKWIS.
I am looking forward to using the hello you used to do

Great job turning there Mike. I recently got some Ash from a friend and was wondering what i could go with some of it. I already have a lot of bowls rough turned and seasoning. I have never tried to turn a natural edge bowl. I just might give it a go. Thanks
Thank you Alan, I find this type of turning both challenging, and rewarding ... when you get it right! ;)

Great video Mike, very informative. I noticed you use some type of pad to support the bowl internal when you flip it to turn the tenon of, can you explain what this pad is please
Thanks Andy. It's just a cloth and shelf liner covered piece of rounded wood, with a tapped thread to fit the spindle(Bealle Tap).
Cheers
Mike

love the technique Mike. It looks really great. Now the real question. How do you keep your area so clean! Cat in the hat come by every night? I am going to start cleaning mine asap. Haha, when I get done I have dust and shavings everywhere! But your cabinets behind you are even immaculate. I would have to move everything off the wall and table every time I turn in order to clean. Do you have an elaborate dust collection system? Wow. Thanks for sharing Mike and God Bless.
Thank you Sir. I do make a mess every time I turn, but just have to clean up ready for the next time behind the lathe ... it's an illnes I think! ;)
Take care, and thanks for watching.
Cheers
Mike
